That was nice of you.

My "Top 10" right now are just my favourite Gene Wilder movies though (RIP), but I guess it's still some indication as to what I like.

I was really confused about who was recommending what to who, so I don't think it's practical to let it freely unspool. Otherwise you're gonna waste that precious time you're so worried about trying to get confirmation from people that they did in fact invite X from outside the thread, or that Y didn't pick a movie yet, or that Z doesn't understand the rules.

I admit this has become a straight up drag having to hassle people to
1. Name a movie and
2. Name a poster.

If you have a better presentation or execution then please let me see it. :) Seriously

I can't remember recommending you Philosophy of a Knife. This, if I'm not mistaken, was a film that MovieGal recommended me, though.

I don't want to play this thread's game, but I can recommend you something. You have to be more specific as to what you are looking for. Are you looking for some Cinema of Transgression recommendations, or did you mean transgressive as a noun?

Just recommend me something from Japan. I've got a lot of seedier, violent stuff on deck for October, so whatever is fine. For reference, I'm not a big fan of Kurosawa, but Teshigahara is dope.

All you have to do is name whoever you want to pick a movie for you, its not really a game. No pressure if you dont want to, just explaining it.

cricket 08-31-16 08:18 PM

I've had Philosophy of a Knife on my watchlist for some time now. It's just so long for the kind of movie it is.

I know. It's just that right now I'm undergoing so many film watching schemes that it will be hard to watch all 50's list movies I haven't seen. I don't want to take any other movies to watch, even if it's only one.

Try some Japanese New Wave stuff. Yoshida, Terayama, Matsumoto, Oshima etc. Or some great classics: Ozu, Naruse, Mizoguchi, Kinoshita... Or just watch Postman Blues.

Finished Embrace Of The Serpent. I truly feel a big studio is dropping the ball big time by not making this with one of those $100 million dollar budgets theyre doing so frequently now. Picture Dances With Wolves, meets Apolcalypto, meets Altered States, but its based off true events.

How would a bigger budget have helped?

The Nanny -

Don't read this if you haven't seen it because there is spoilers and i can't be bothered with the tags.

This was really good. My biggest surprise was the kid who played Joey, after reading what it was about i was fully expecting an insufferable child performance i think he did a good job though. He was annoying but i think he struck the perfect balance between as annoying as the character called for and genuinely annoying that he ruins your enjoyment. The mother was the only one i didn't like, she was just way too overdramatic i'm glad she wasn't in it that often really. Bette was great as usual of course. Kind and patient throughout (well until she was revealed of course) but she gave Joey these looks that made it clear that she wasn't all sweet and caring.

It was obvious from the start that at least some of what Joey was saying was true and that he most likely did have a reason to be scared of her. Still i was curious how big Bette's role would be, while the payoff wasn't mindblowing i think it was a good way to go making her mad rather than evil. One thing i don't think was clarified unless i missed it, was Joeys prank with the doll in the bath what retriggered her madness? I would guess it must have but when she was talking about it to the aunt she said the initial death was what made her mad and she made no mention of getting better once Joey left. If she was mad throughout then it is odd that they would make everything happen after the prank.

Anyway great nom Citizen. I've only seen three from Bette so far i think this is my second favourite behind Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?. Will have to ask my mum if she has seen this one, if not i'd imagine she'd love it.

And if anyone wants to pick me again i'm still in. Of course i'd suggest you pick the people who have shown interest but not had a go first.

Visually. This is the amazon, and the majesty of it, B&W film does not do it justice. The Amazon is the star of the movie. The acting in this was top notch, both actors that played the Shaman were solid. The directors a genius for pulling this off with the budget he had. I feel the story was strong enough to where they could have done it more justice from a production standpoint.

I have to agree with Swan here about Embrace of the Serpent. Turning it into a big budget action adventure Hollywood film would work against the film and it would be probably suck.

Very cool! That you liked it. Bette Davis made several films latter in her career that were physiological thrillers, and there fun watches. Bette's always great fun to see.

Mm, I think it was a stroke of genius on the directors part to make it B&W since he didnt have the production to do it justice in a more direct manner. He pulled off kinda what Speilberg did making JAWS, made a better movie with a broken shark. He didnt have the budget, but made up for it in other areas. If this movie was in color, it would look like a low production, things would be seen clearer, film quality wouldnt be HD etc... but since its in B&W it never gives off that impression. Does that make sense?

No an action/adventure theme would suck. Im thinking more like Dances With Wolves in the Amazon, but there would be shades of harder fare like what was in Apocalypto & Altered States.

I see what you're saying. I agree that B&W can hinder a film that would otherwise have such a vibrant landscape, but I don't think a big budget is really needed to achieve that. Aguirre, the Wrath of God is a good example.

Okeedoke.

That was easy.

Even if I don't agree with him rating Beyond Re-Animator higher than Re-Animator 2 ;), I'd like a rec from re93animator.

Too many re-animators in that sentence.

Since you mention Re-Animator, you may enjoy the similarly bizarre and twisted horror comedy Society (1989) (made by RA’s producer). It’s definitely not for faint of heart though.

If you’d rather see something else, I’ve got a myriad of other genre flicks that I could recommend. :) Dead Alive, Brain Damage, Night of the Creeps, Street Trash… take your pick!

I've seen Dead Alive/Braindead, Night of the Creeps, and I think I've seen Brain Damage. I'm sometimes bad at remembering film titles but it does sound familiar.

You have a way of picking films that i think are probably good but they just make me seriously depressed. Think Kids and Bully are possibly the most disgusting films i've seen that don't show much outside the sex scenes. Seriously f*ck gore, the most disturbing image i've ever seen in any film is probably in Kids when the main guy who has and knows he has HIV is having sex with the 13 year old he has been pursuing throughout the film.

Kids (1995)

http://static.rogerebert.com/uploads...pDOC88kKQr.jpg

Well...this was a movie...I think.

Before I begin, though. Topsy...two things. First, you might have a point in saying that people should watch this, though the ones that would benefit most from it probably are to young to see it if we go by the ratingboards (which I seldom do). It is a powerful film with an important issue at its core. That said...second: I don't think I like you very much right now. I think it will pass...eventually... :P On to the "review"

In a movie about underage sex, drugs, drinking and aggravated assault, how to deem if the movie is good or bad. Well, the main character Telly is a master class in how to be an horrible douchbag, which should be accredited to Leo Fitzpatrick portraying a 17 year old who spends his days trying to sleep with virgin girls of 13 to 14 years. His friend Casper (Justin Pierce) isn't much better, stooping to rape in a late scene and totally missing that the guy he wakes up next to seems to be dead.

SPOILERS AHEAD! SKIP TO NEXT RED LINE

As previously mentiond by Camo, Telly is HIV positive, as we learn when a girl he deflowered gets a check up adn learns the truth, that the only guy she ever had sex with gave her HIV. Now, as far as I heard/saw, Telly never says that he has HIV and we never get to see him confronted with the facts, so he might not have known. Although, I get the feeling that if we knew for sure that he knew, I get the feeling he wouldn't really care and just keep going as before, so the point stands.

END OF SPOILERS

So, at the end, is the movie good. On a technical level it's very competently shot on location in new york, but never does it actually focus on the landscape it's set in. The focus (but for a few times) is on the kids, moving around, talking, drinking, smoking, doing drugs and each other. Was it an enjoyable film? No. The 90 minutes passed on by in a relativly fast pace, but never did I find myself enjoying the ride. See it once, experience the feelings of discomfort and unease and then you never need see it again.

Do you just pick whoever you want whenever you want, or do you have to be picked in order to pick?

The Fear of 13 (2015) -

Really moving documentary. The melodrama was maybe a tad overkill (I think the subject was powerful enough without histrionic reinforcement), but it was still very well done. It brings to light some criminal justice system inadequacies with a rollercoaster of a story.

CosmicRunaway 09-03-16 07:38 AM

I was out most of the afternoon and evening yesterday, but I did get a copy of Society. I have some errands to run this morning, but I should get around to watching it this afternoon or this evening, depending on what happens in the Survivor game haha.

Im not sure what Im getting into with this Dragon Tiger Gate movie Omni suggested. I will watch it, I want to watch it, thats the whole point of the chain.....Im just wondering if its gonna be like a saturday morning kids tv show with the highest end martial arts.

Watch it have a story on par with Highlander and end up in my Top 10. ;)

CosmicRunaway 09-03-16 03:14 PM

On par with Highlander? Don't joke about such things. There can be only one.

Oh! That movie was so tough. :yup: Great plotline, great villain, Sean Connery was complete money in that, and I thought the tv series (from what I saw) was solid too.
The movie sequels though were the drizzlin s#ts.

What sequels? I have no idea what you're talking about. :shifty:

So, did it have a story on par with Highlander or was it a saturday morning cartoon? The last sentence was a bit jumbled.

Society (1989)

I didn't know much about this movie going into it, but I had seen a From Beyond-esque picture that turned out to be from the film's climax, so I sort of knew what to expect. I kind of wish I didn't know about that though, because for the rest of the movie I was just sort of waiting for it to get to that point.

Because of that I found most of the movie to be rather boring. I appreciate the psychological angle the first and second acts took, but I just wasn't really into it. After things got grotesque, they got quite silly, and I found myself laughing a bit at the end, particularly when...
WARNING: "Film's final act" spoilers below
...the dad said "I guess you're right son, I am a butt-head" and also when Billy turned Ferguson inside out.

The effects are impressive, and I enjoy the social commentary, but overall the movie was just a bit bland and lacking any of the charm that films like Re-Animator have. That said it was a good recommendation, it just fell a bit flat for me.

Edit: I just realized I said "political commentary" instead of "social commentary" so I fixed it.
