The only two actresses (am I allowed to say "actress" anymore? Oh well, The Golden Globes said it) :) I'm interested in winning are the only two I've seen and that's Amanda Seyfried for Mank (Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture), and Anya Taylor-Joy for The Queen's Gambit (Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television). I thought Seyfried was the best thing about Mank, although Gary Oldman is always great. And Anya Taylor-Joy just knocked it out of the park in The Queen's Gambit. She was fantastic in that mini-series.
A few I have access to that I need to watch (when I can find the time) are Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, I Care A Lot (coming Feb. 19th to Netlfix), and Ozark, which I have put off for far too long. To be fair, I haven't had Netlix that long that I can continually commit to a series when there are so many movies that I haven't seen that I want to. And I agree with @TheUsualSuspect about James Corden. I can't see that guy getting nominated for anything except maybe most annoying TV Host. |

Mank would be too obvious for the Oscars these days. They are all about shock value nowadays.

I think they have a bit of an alternating pattern going between "shock" winners and "safe" winners - for every Moonlight or Parasite you have a Spotlight or Green Book. It may well be that they follow up one of their more radical winners with one of their more obvious (especially if it's a matter of giving Fincher his Departed win).

Re: Golden Globes nominations are just hours away!
What was the favourite that year, though? (First person to say The Favourite gets a temp ban)

Roma, probably.

Shock value, political correctness, and the current racial climate...these will all be working against Mank.

Re: Golden Globes nominations are just hours away!
If Green Book seemed out of left field, it's because we'd kind of gotten used to the Academy picking more unusual films like Moonlight or The Shape of Water so that a film that read like race-bent Driving Miss Daisy (a movie that tends to get held up as an example of the Academy being out-of-touch) seemed like it had no chance under these circumstances but then, well, you saw what happened. In any case, it's all (pun unintended) academic until they actually drop their own nominations next month.

TIFF is always a good indicator of contenders and Green Book won the major award

What a strange year 2020 was for cinema! I've seen very few of the films nominated, except for Mank. I do want to see The Father.
I don't know whether the Globes are as PC/SJ as are the Oscars, so it'll be interesting to see what wins at the Golden Globes (Is one allowed to say "wins" any more?:D). Yeah, The Father looks really good, I'm planning to watch it before the week is out. |
