Region free DVDs are somewhat risky though.

Mystery Man 04-30-02 01:30 AM

Weird. Color me ignorant. This is the first I've heard of this. I figured a DVD was a DVD was a DVD. Guess not.

Heck, I only own 1 DVD because I only have DVD-ROM, not a player, and I'd rather not watch movies on my computer. I guess that might explain why I had never heard of such a thing. Thanks for the info, although I don't really know how useful that info really is to me. I guess all it really means to me is that there is no reason to take Jacob's Ladder with me if I leave the country...

Hoops McCann 06-01-02 12:10 AM

Ok, I just saw it, and I have to admit I'm a little baffled. Where can I find this list of clues to look for?

spudracer 06-01-02 01:10 AM

Ok, if you have the DVD it's on the insert inside the DVD Case. If you didn't buy it, here's what the clues are.

WARNING: "Mulholland Drive Clues" spoilers below

1. Pay particular attention in the beginning of the film: at least two clues are revealed before the credits.

2. Notice appearences of the red lampshade.

3. Can you hear the title of the film that Adam Kesher is auditioning actresses for? Is it mentioned again?

4. An accident is a terrible event...notice the location of the accident.

5. Who gives a key, and why?

6. Notice the robe, the ashtray, the coffee cup.

7. What is felt, realized and gathered at the club Silencio?

8. Did talent alone help Camilla?

9. Note the occurrences surrounding the man behind Winkies.

10. Where is Aunt Ruth?

Those are taken verbatim from the insert. :)

Hoops McCann 06-01-02 10:57 AM

Thanks. I rented it, so there was no insert. Although, I'm not too sure these clues will help me understand it. I guess I'll have to watch it again and see if it helps.

Firstly, is it just my version (I ordered it from the states) or is Laura's muff blurred? It doesn't affect anything that much, just irritating.

Secondly, I don't give a **** how it's meant to be seen, you can't fast forward a DVD like a video so chapter's are of necessity ESPECIALLY if you give a list of 10 clues to look out for, cause if you miss one, you'd want to flick back, oh hold on, you can't.
Sorry this is so late Fez, but I had a question for you. What do you mean you can't fast forward a DVD? I can fast forward mine at 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x and 100x normal speed... it's actually much more convenient than a tape, IMO. As for the blur effect, here's what Lynch had to say "We did that blurring for the DVD on purpose, as we know that pictures of Laura would be everywhere if we didn't." I can't say that I agree with the action, but at least I can understand where he's coming from.

There are quite a few R3 DVD's that I've wanted to buy over the past year and have considered going with an all region DVD player, but they tend to run on the pricey side and my wife is whining that she would rather have a house :) Here's a link to an all region DVD player that comes highly recommended. http://www.avdeals.com/malata_dvd.htm

AHA! there was an insert! i rented it, too. and i'm really itching to talk about the movie (ha, like Memento!) dammit! someone talk about it with me! even if we cover those 10 points. i think i got it but some things are up in the air with me over what things really mean like:

WARNING: "MD" spoilers below
the man behind winkies and what the hell he's up to, aunt ruth being dead or alive, what the hell the name of the movie was - the musical, alternate realities, this whole thing being the diner boy's nightmare, betty not really being betty, or, betty not REALLY being diane (body on the bed has long hair), betty being reincarnated, what the **** is the final say on the mystery?! i mean, i got things happening but i don't get what they mean as a whole and what the real deal is. unless there is none. which would be typical. is it me or does lynch always have freak show people like the freaky little man in the wheel chair behind the glass? i seem to remember something similar in twin peaks.

aha! supposedly, it's all explained here, though I don't always agree:

Mightymose, mine's pretty much an oldie up to 8x fast forward speed.

That basically means I can't fast forward to lets say half way through mulholland drive wtihout waiting 10 minutes. I got an all region player though, its necessary as I buy a lot of imports :)

Interestnig point about Laura's bits, but I think it gives it a bit of a tacky quality...

spudracer 06-09-02 08:31 PM

Tacky or not, would you want your body with someone elses head pasted on out on the internet? Don't answer that, I think I know the answer...

Alissa Milano had the same problem, she appeared in a softcore porn (Embrace of the Vampire, sadly I own it) in which she appears semi-nude. Her body was then put out on the internet, and if I can remember correctly, they kept her head with her body.

Lawsuits insued and it was a big tangled mess. But other actors/actresses appear semi-nude or totally nude in film and continue on with no big messes from those porn sites (or they don't really care about the pictures that do appear on the web).

My take is that if they are willing to take there clothes off on film and don't expect some sort of "following" as a result, they should really reconsider stripping down.

How badly did I get it off of topic?

Fez Wizardo 06-09-02 08:59 PM

Sorry you confused me a bit

Partially because it's getting quite late :D

But... it's simple:

When she did the film, internet problems existed, everyone knows celeb porn sites exist. If she didnt want that problem, she shouldn't have stripped. If she chose to she should accept the consequences, including pictures of various animal heads being stuck onto her body.

still haven't seen it. whats wrong with me man.

My dvd player doesn't fast forward that fast, so when i wanted to watch a scene again near the end of the movie, i had to wait about 15 minutes while it was fast forwarding. Also, this movie didn't have squat for extras, just the trailer and cast bios. All in all, i'd give the movie 4 stars and the dvd -4.
Please write to me and let me in on the secret of the one scene. I really want to know. i'm at ([email protected])
