What Speilberg means to me...

I know that I will instantly go see a Speilberg movie when it comes out. He's actually the only director I feel that way about. Is he the best? Who can define that? My opinions different , than say silver bullets. I'm older, I saw Jaws in the theatre when I was a kid. It blew my mind! There was no other movie like that then, it was the FIRST summer blockbuster. Speilberg has helped Hollywood by making SO many multi-million dollar films. Ask the people who made the money off him andd I'm sure they'll say he is the best;)
My favorite's that hes made are:
Saving Private Ryan
Schindlers List
The Color Purple
Raiders of the Lost Arc
Jaws
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Empire of the Sun
Jurrasic Park

But I also have other favorite directors:
Oliver Stone
David Lynch
Martin Scorsese
Stanley Kubrick
Cameron Crowe
Francis Ford Coppola
etc,...

BTW, I saw Star Wars when I was a kid in the theatre too, it was a double feature. Second movie...Logans Run. Needless to say Star Wars blew my mind too!!!!;)

Ladies Man 08-02-02 05:57 AM

My idol, he is! Hmmmmm

Herod 08-02-02 10:17 AM

ladiesman?

Hey, weren't you WriterDirect at one point? Didn't you write the tasteless, and woefully unfunny stories about Kubrick? I distinctly remember one in which Speilberg tricks Kubrick into driving of a cliff, killing him. Sounds to me like Idol worship only in the god-smiting sense.

The Silver Bullet 08-04-02 09:46 PM

You know clues? Ladies Man doesn't have one.

Just saw Amistad for the first time. It was long (2hrs. 35 minutes) but I thought it was great. Nigel Hawthorne playing Martin Van Buren in a role very similiar to the one he played in The Madness of King George was very good. Anthony Hopkins was tremendous as usual. Djimoun Hounsou who I also liked in Gladiator was also very good. The middle passage scenes were brutal but should be seen.

My Favorite Spielberg movies

1. Jaws
2. Schindler's List
3. Raiders of the Lost Ark
4. Close Encounters of the Third Kind
5. Amistad
6. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
7. Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade
8. Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom
9. Empire of the Sun
10. Saving Private Ryan

Jurassic Park is one of my faveourite Speilberg movies. The effects in it were amazing and can still stand up on it's own today.

A.I. was a great film, although I had to watch it a couple of times on DVD to really appreciate it, It's now one of my faveourite movies.

Indiana Jones Trilogy was amazing. Although I wasn't huge fan of Part 2 I still liked it and loved the trilogy as a whole.

Speilberg still has a lot of directing energy in him and hopefully we will still see movies in the cinema by him in the future.

I think he has defenetly lost his touch.

What do you all think ?
Well. i think that steven spielberg is a great director. He's been involved with many masterpeice works like for example SCHINDLER'S LIST, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws and Saving Private Ryan but let's just also not forget that Steven Spielberg also been involved with other films as a producer. Back to the Future and Band of Brothers (tv series). looking at his carreer and seeing what his done i believe that he has a very intellectual way of making films. it's queit strange that most of the films that his directed so far was true stories maybe if he wants to be the best he has to diversify himself to other genres. so far we've only seen him in fantasy and war films i think it's about time he should do something else. coming back to your question, i think that steven spielberg is an excellent director but not that good to be the best director of all time. rather than a good story a great director should show more of the visual aspects of film making. altough i reckon that he is one of the best 10 director of all time, i just don't think he is good enough to be the best yet. Directors like sergio leone, Akira kurosawa and Orson welles probably be around that section.

Tazz 02-04-05 08:38 PM
