Most of the films I picked were already in my watchlist, I think there were only two I never heard of that I had to do some research on. There were also a few films (2 I think) that I had already previously seen this month. Still being 2021, I didn’t see the harm in it.

Yeah, only seen the ones in green.

The big country was a phenomenal film, one of my favorite western films I’ve seen to date!

Some people around here can tell you how I feel about Short Term 12. I just love it to bits. And I know that some of that is because of my own professional and personal experiences, but I think it's really solid and while it has some flaws, none of them really put a dent in the film for me.

And please post recs! I haven't officially picked my "recommended" film yet.

I watched The Big Country for last years challenge (1950’s western category). Really enjoyed it as well.

The gaps in what I've seen lean more toward the mainstream. But I never mind when I've seen other peoples' recommendations. It gives you a sense of their taste (you know, to judge them with!) and sometimes you find that other people really like a film you do. Like, I am loving the Kung Fu Hustle Appreciation Society we've formed here.

Yeah, it’s a great film. I think I’ve seen it at least 3 times this year. Very rewatchable film. Has a little bit of everything I look for in a film. Just a good all around comedy!

Got one title in here so far with plans to continue to get more of them. Solved the director dilemma this morning, unexpectedly.

FWIW, watching that many movies in a month really is a testament to how stressful the last 4 weeks have been. Like, I'm sort of proud and my competitive side is sort of satisfied (because if you put a list in front of me, we are now in a race, even if there is no prize and even if, like, it is NOT actually a race). I really did take care to pick movies I thought looked interesting and not just stuff that would check the different boxes.

But . . . dang. It mostly says a lot about how much time I spent on the couch working and how many nights I was so stressed out that I didn't want to go to bed and would watch 30 minutes of a movie instead.

I did watch most of the films on either Amazon, Hulu, Criterion, or HBO Go. And I would recommend almost all of them, if you are looking for something for one of the categories.

Well, finally found a film for The Locarno Film festival category. So now I have most of them saved with a movie to watch on normal mode. I’m not concerned over the four or five I hadn’t found one for yet, as it’s only February.

Some great films on here, good call on choice of Actors (Paul Newman) You even have a couple I haven't seen. And a nice selection from Scorsese making for a broader experience of the man. Nice!

Yeah, I watched Hud last year for this challenge, and it was great.
I’ve previously seen The Verdict and Absence of Malice and enjoyed them both. The rest I’ve heard of and haven’t gotten to yet.

I think I am going to use Locarno for Nightmare Mode. I wasn't familiar with it before seeing it mentioned in this challenge.

The Czechoslovakia version of Baron Munchausen is available to stream on Amazon, so that should help you get started...I think?

Yeah, it’s a nice option to have this year. I still have a decent amount his Great list to see, so I could have chosen that, but the 1001 offered a wider selection by far and were more readily available just going by a casual look through Amazon.

I'm doing two categories at a time, and alternating between them. Then onto the next two categories.

So right now I am doing my 10 foreign language films and I have chosen the 70s as my decade. You can probably trace my path through all of this via the "Rate the Last Film . . . " thread. I might post my film list for each category as I finish them.

There are a lot of films that have been languishing in my netflix queue for, no joke, like 15 years. I am planning to use some of the categories (and especially the documentary category) to finally knock them off my watchlist.

With Scorsese, I'm trying to get as good a grasp on him as I can. Like some, I've heard of his reputation as a director of mob films. But I'm hoping in particular to be able to see some of those where he steps away from that like The King of Comedy and Silence.

Originally, I looked at Woody Allen (haven't seen any of his films). But I was dismayed by the lack of depth of his films available to stream. Maybe if I had HBO Max?

As for Newman, I haven't seen nearly enough of his films. I think the only ones of his that I've seen was Cool Hand Luke, Slap Shot, The Color of Money, Cars and Road to Perdition. You can thank the pre-list debate about Newman and Robert Redford for me to think about which one to focus on. Ultimately, chose Newman and it's possible I might update that list if I see something like The Sting or Butch Cassidy available.

I want to take advantage of the weather issues to knock some of those films out next week.

Yeah, I could have gone with either Herzog or Fukasaku, considering the amount of films available via streaming, but I went with Chahine because of the following:
1. Unfamiliarity with Egypt cinema
2. Cairo Station was indeed a pleasant surprise last year. The hope is that there might be another diamond amongst his filmography.
3. Apparently Chahine is a celebrated director, so I figured I’d dive deeper into his films.
4. Availability. Netflix has a lot of his films available to watch so it was an easy pick.

As for recommendations. Alexandria, Why? was pretty good. Start there.

Is he a celebrated director in Japan? Coming with no knowledge of his work and glancing at his filmography he seems like a 1-hit wonder.

I think Battle Royale kind of blew up internationally for a variety of reasons (post-Columbine controversy about teenagers killing each other keeping it out of circulation at first, Tarantino calling himself a fan, the subsequent references to it in Kill Bill Vol. 1, general recency bias) and that didn't necessarily extend to the rest of his prolific career as a sturdy producer of yakuza films and the like.

I just think he’s isn’t as well known, is all. I haven’t seen any of his films yet mind you, of course. His Battles without Honor and humanity is a celebrated series in the Yakuza genre, where most of his work dealt with. He also did a few sci fi films, such as Virus (nominated for several awards including best picture in the Japan academy awards).
I think I maybe still do a deep dive of his available films anyways when time permits. As well as Herzog and Miike since Amazon has a lot of their films.
I seem to be favoring Asian films this year heh.

And regarding Newman there is still a number of his films I've yet to see. You mentioned The Color of Money, have you seen The Hustler? It's where his character originated from. A personal favorite of mine.
As is The Sting and Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid from my childhood. Had them in my Top 5 of the recent All-Time Countdown. Love 'em both.

I actually watched two Paul Newman films...Harper(1966) and it's sequel The Drowning Pool(1975) both were good you can also check out

I have not seen The Hustler. Would love to add The Sting and Butch Cassidy personally.

I think availability is going to be a key in making sure I see the list through or if I need to make changes. Instead of trying to wipe out categories, I'm trying to chip away at them so I may be able to substitute them with time.

One goal I had heading into this list was to catch up with some of the titles that I missed on my school's Cinema International...films like Shoplifters, 4 Months, 3 Days and 2 Nights, and even '71 looked interesting on paper but whether it was due to work or school work, I missed out on them. But hopefully given a second chance, I'll dive headfirst into them.

As for Short Term 12, I should be done with it this weekend. From what I've seen so far, it looks like a winner in a year that's been kind of short on them.

Indeed, I have. Jack has what I think is a can't miss charismatic quality that keeps your eyes on the screen. And Ben Mendelsohn is pretty darned good as well.

I would give a moderate recommendation to both Equinox and Belladonna, both were like
films for me. As a horror fan you might enjoy Equinox more than the average viewer.

But it doesn't have to be 2020's Oscar winners, it can be Oscar winners from any point in history. The odds of all ten of those films winning are not so high as to be certain (even going off Globes wins as a predictor, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and Sound of Metal both competed for Best Actor - Drama and the former beat the latter so at least one of them will probably lose if they are only competing against one another).

I know it doesn't have to be but I'm watching the Oscar films so might as well keep track of them.

I'd never seen ANY Kurosawa film until last month, so these are all first-timers. SS is indeed a monster of a film, shortest 3.5 hours of my life.

One film that I never hear about is One Wonderful Sunday, which I absolutely loved. I recommend it if you haven't seen it.

Yeah, I watched it on YouTube and paused it constantly to use Google Translate to figure out what the title cards were saying.

I will say that even if you didn't follow the title cards, you could still probably really enjoy the film.

Movie Posters really do the trick for me. I've found all kinds of favorites that way throughout my life. It varies a little when researching on IMDb, where I meander through deeper aspects, but a movie poster can, will and does "speak" to me.

The youtube version I've found is broken into 3 parts with a CC option for English subtitles. It also has different colored monochrome along with B&W depending on the scene. They appear like really good copies as well.

I would recommend Moxie, Tina, Kid90 and Black Art. The best was easily Tina.

If you’re looking for a good Yakuza (don’t call us gangsters) film, might I suggest Battles Without Honor and Humanity? Specifically the first one, although the second one is decent as well.
