There are quite a few recs on pages 3 and 4 from users in this challenge.
Congratulations on getting through the first part so quickly! Hopefully you saw some stuff you really liked. This time around I'm being more thoughtful in my selections and really trying to pick films that genuinely interest me. |

I think he only watched 1 film from the main challenge (The one in green font), while the red ones are his picks that he has yet to watch. Right @BooBooKittyFock? Finishing the main challenge within a month would be crazy. |
@tacoma11
Saw quite a few of the recs already, but I’ve been wanting to see Short Term 12! Thanks for the help. Do I also post recs or is it too late? |

Must have missed that. Here you are.

The big country was a phenomenal film, one of my favorite western films I’ve seen to date! |
Yeah, finishing the main challenge in a month would be crazy.

I’m not sure how many of you have already picked your recs, but here are mine.
I’ve seen all of these films and they are among, some of my all time favorites, if you have not seen them yet, I hope you will hold them close to your heart as I have: Handmaiden Eyes Wide Shut Singin In the Rain Come and See The Big Country @Takoma11 |

Well @Takoma11 , you’ve probably seen a lot more films than I have (how many you up to?) I’m not sure I’ll be able to rec you one unless it was out of dumb luck or a film on my watchlist 🤣
You got a letterboxd? |

It gives you a sense of their taste (you know, to judge them with!) and sometimes you find that other people really like a film you do. Like, I am loving the Kung Fu Hustle Appreciation Society we've formed here.
Yeah, it’s a great film. I think I’ve seen it at least 3 times this year. Very rewatchable film. Has a little bit of everything I look for in a film. Just a good all around comedy! |

An update...titles I've seen are in blue. Titles I plan on seeing are in red. A couple that are re-watches will be in bold. Those I'm unsure about will be italicized.
Edited as of April 1 (no fooling):
Main Challenge
Got one title in here so far with plans to continue to get more of them. Solved the director dilemma this morning, unexpectedly.

FWIW, watching that many movies in a month really is a testament to how stressful the last 4 weeks have been. Like, I'm sort of proud and my competitive side is sort of satisfied (because if you put a list in front of me, we are now in a race, even if there is no prize and even if, like, it is NOT actually a race). I really did take care to pick movies I thought looked interesting and not just stuff that would check the different boxes.
But . . . dang. It mostly says a lot about how much time I spent on the couch working and how many nights I was so stressed out that I didn't want to go to bed and would watch 30 minutes of a movie instead. I did watch most of the films on either Amazon, Hulu, Criterion, or HBO Go. And I would recommend almost all of them, if you are looking for something for one of the categories.

And of course I can't wait to see what you think of Short Term 12. |
Well, finally found a film for The Locarno Film festival category. So now I have most of them saved with a movie to watch on normal mode. I’m not concerned over the four or five I hadn’t found one for yet, as it’s only February.
Don’t mind my rambling. |

The others I’m familiar with. The Czechoslovakia version of Baron Munchausen is available to stream on Amazon, so that should help you get started...I think? It’s what I chose for my normal mode category. For nightmare mode I’m sticking with the Oscars, but swapping out Ebert’s Great movies for Steven Jay Schneider’s 1001 movies. Already found 10 to watch and have them saved. |

Yeah, it’s a nice option to have this year. I still have a decent amount his Great list to see, so I could have chosen that, but the 1001 offered a wider selection by far and were more readily available just going by a casual look through Amazon.
Really looking forward to see what you select for Nightmare Mode. So right now I am doing my 10 foreign language films and I have chosen the 70s as my decade. You can probably trace my path through all of this via the "Rate the Last Film . . . " thread. I might post my film list for each category as I finish them. There are a lot of films that have been languishing in my netflix queue for, no joke, like 15 years. I am planning to use some of the categories (and especially the documentary category) to finally knock them off my watchlist. |

(Because simply deleting it from the watchlist isn't an option. What am I, a quitter?) If it was interesting to me in my early 20s, clearly I have an obligation to watch it now! |
Glad to see another one joining us! Good luck @Hey Fredrick!

With Scorsese, I'm trying to get as good a grasp on him as I can. Like some, I've heard of his reputation as a director of mob films. But I'm hoping in particular to be able to see some of those where he steps away from that like The King of Comedy and Silence. Originally, I looked at Woody Allen (haven't seen any of his films). But I was dismayed by the lack of depth of his films available to stream. Maybe if I had HBO Max? As for Newman, I haven't seen nearly enough of his films. I think the only ones of his that I've seen was Cool Hand Luke, Slap Shot, The Color of Money, Cars and Road to Perdition. You can thank the pre-list debate about Newman and Robert Redford for me to think about which one to focus on. Ultimately, chose Newman and it's possible I might update that list if I see something like The Sting or Butch Cassidy available. I want to take advantage of the weather issues to knock some of those films out next week. |

@Wyldesyde19 I got to say Youssef Chahine is probably the most interesting director choice I have seen anyone make in all the years the challenge has been running.
I was surprised by how solid Cairo Station was when I watched it last year, so if you find some of his films to be in the same level, let me know because I might want to check them out myself. |

Unfamiliarity with Egypt cinema 2. Cairo Station was indeed a pleasant surprise last year. The hope is that there might be another diamond amongst his filmography. 3. Apparently Chahine is a celebrated director, so I figured I’d dive deeper into his films. 4. Availability. Netflix has a lot of his films available to watch so it was an easy pick. As for recommendations. Alexandria, Why? was pretty good. Start there. |

Aside from Battle Royale, I see that the overwhelming majority of his films has less than 1000 votes on IMDb. Is he a celebrated director in Japan? Coming with no knowledge of his work and glancing at his filmography he seems like a 1-hit wonder. |
Re: 2021 Film Challenge
I think Battle Royale kind of blew up internationally for a variety of reasons (post-Columbine controversy about teenagers killing each other keeping it out of circulation at first, Tarantino calling himself a fan, the subsequent references to it in Kill Bill Vol. 1, general recency bias) and that didn't necessarily extend to the rest of his prolific career as a sturdy producer of yakuza films and the like.

I seem to be favoring Asian films this year heh. |

A personal favorite of mine. As is The Sting and Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid from my childhood. Had them in my Top 5 of the recent All-Time Countdown. Love 'em both. |

And of course I can't wait to see what you think of Short Term 12. As for Short Term 12, I should be done with it this weekend. From what I've seen so far, it looks like a winner in a year that's been kind of short on them. |

But hopefully given a second chance, I'll dive headfirst into them.

Re: 2021 Film Challenge
But it doesn't have to be 2020's Oscar winners, it can be Oscar winners from any point in history. The odds of all ten of those films winning are not so high as to be certain (even going off Globes wins as a predictor, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and Sound of Metal both competed for Best Actor - Drama and the former beat the latter so at least one of them will probably lose if they are only competing against one another).

We'll see what happens with the categories but my belief is Nomadland(Zhao) Ma Rainey's Black Bottom(Boseman) Judas and the Black Mesiah (Kaluuya) Sound of Metal(Sound) Trial of the Chicago Seven (Sorkin) Soul (Animated) Time (Documentary) One Night in Miami (Song) Tenet (Visual Effects) Another Road (Foreign) You likely aren't going to see a film win 7-8 Oscars so it'll spread out, I've got two categories that I haven't slotted in yet. Supporting Actress, and Actress with the belief(films I haven't seen yet are in bold but I'm going to see them)... Best Actress Mulligan (Promising Young Woman) Davis (Ma Rainey's Black Bottom) McDormand (Nomadland) Day (United States vs Billie Holiday) Kirby (Pieces of a Woman) Best Supporting Actress Olivia Coleman (Father) Yuh-Jung Youn (Minari) Amanda Seyfried (Mank) Glenn Close (Hillbilly Elegy) Maria Bakalova (Borat 2) Now could Sound of Metal lose out on Sound and thus not get any Oscars...sure so I pull it off and replace it with Mank. Soul loses to Wolfwalkers...well I'm going to watch that one anyways..so I just move it over to the animated list. |

watch 10 films from the same genre (horror) Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker Madhouse The Devils The Dead Center The Villains Possessor Grandmother’s House Next of Kin Possum Dead & Buried Since horror is a pretty broad genre, this time I decided to watch 10 films whose titles and/or posters I really liked. Despite this superficial approach, there was only really one dud in the bunch, The Dead Center. I am, how you say, very cheap. So many 2021 releases that interest me I just can't bring myself to shell out $6 for to rent. I would recommend Moxie, Tina, Kid90 and Black Art. The best was easily Tina. None of them were bad, just mediocre. |

watch 10 films from the same country (Japan) An Autumn Afternoon Hana-Bi/Fireworks Ikiru Harakiri Tokyo Story Tokyo Drifter A Colt is My Passport Take Aim at the Police Van Stakeout Intimidation Overall a strong group! Some classics in there, obviously. A Colt is My Passport was a fun surprise. The beauty of it was that I had been waiting for a good "gangster" film that I HAVEN'T seen, and this so wonderfully fits the bill. THANK YOU! |

Some really great films here, and after checking out Colt Is My Passport, I do believe, like with a few previous films from your list, I'll be adding that one to mine.
