Re: IMDB Alumni, post here!

To all IMDB refugees who feel like MoFo is a hostile place: It's really not. What you need to realize is that we are a pretty tightly-knit community. You coming here is like moving to a new town and entering the local pub for the first time. There is going to be some rough-housing and such, but ultimately it's not like we don't want you here. We do. You'll just have to learn that this isn't your typical I'm-just-another-profile kind of place.

What I've learned over the time I've been here is that people aren't exactly afraid to show their real personalities here. They aren't here to get a good approval rate on their posts. They aren't here to be agreed with. This is very much like a pub in a small town. Every once in a while someone will buy you a beer, and every now and then someone will throw their empty glass at you. That's just the way humans are.

MoFo is the most lifelike forum I've ever experienced. And if you think that you won't be appreciated here, take a look at my posts. They had plenty of reasons to kick me out. They haven't. That is all.

Chypmunk 02-04-17 01:39 PM

Welcome to all those coming over from It Might Dead be.

(I think I've got that right ... Yoda told me what the initials stood for but tbh as usual I was barely paying attention)

CosmicRunaway 02-04-17 02:35 PM

Sorry to see you guys taking some light joking too seriously. Hopefully you haven't gone for good, and will realize that this place isn't really hostile, as long as you're not hostile to it. If you do stick around, know that you'll be welcome here.

Also, feel free to join the Cronenberg fan club.

I'm from IMDb and am looking for a place to replace that forum. I'll hang around here and see if it fits my needs.

Citizen Rules 02-04-17 02:58 PM

I don't have time to read this entire thread....so I'll just say Welcome to IMDB former members

MoFo is a great place!.
..We're a community...sort of like one big extended family...With many cool cousins, a few eccentric aunts, a couple grumpy uncles, and a crazy in-law or two:eek:....But even if we do sometimes grumble at each other, we never forget that we're part of the MoFo family.

Some of you will like it here and become active members...some of you won't fit in and will move on. You get out of MoFo what you put in. So let the crap roll off your back, make friends where you can and join in the fun. And don't forget to rep my post;)

I'm not sure what prompted this quick little exodus-from-the-exodus, but I assure you, any hostility you think you see in this thread is just people kidding around. This is a pretty friendly place by most standards, particularly the standards of Internet forums, though I suppose I can see why you would take the jokes literally, given how these things usually go.

Stick around, I promise it's a good place to talk about movies. And if you guys have any problems or feel harassed or insulted, just drop me or one of the mods a message and we'll try to make it right. :)
Hello there! I sent you a reply to your private message.

Try that: http://www.movieforums.com/community/memberlist.php
You can type in the username and find them if they're going to use the same name they had on IMDb.

Sure man. Yes it has that feature but it seems we can't communicate via PM until we reach 10 posts, so I can't reach them either. However I'm scrolling through the Forum and I'll eventually find some interesting Threads where to post.

If you mean Better Call Saul, it's right here. There's a quick search in the header (little magnifying glass next to your username, below the Essays and Reviews links), and a link to a more advanced search in the footer. It can be a little wonky at times, so apologies in advance.

I rewatch the episodes every night before the next (depending if another show is running at the same time) and can't get over how layered it is. I'm thoroughly entertained by it.

Hey, I posted over on the Saul thread. :)

Dani8 02-04-17 04:35 PM

I'm fumbling around a bit blind with this new format. Need to adjust me ole multifocals so I can get accustomed to it. Too used to the dinosaur software over on imdb.

Yoda 02-04-17 04:37 PM

Re: IMDB Alumni, post here!

If you have any questions, you can post them here, send me a message, leave me a profile comment, post comment, whatever.

Most of the functions are designed to be pretty intuitive, so ideally things will be mostly where you'd expect them to be.

Dani8 02-04-17 04:39 PM

Re: IMDB Alumni, post here!

I'll get the hang of it, Yoda. As I said, I'm just to used to the old and out of date format on imdb. But thanks again.

Dani8 02-04-17 04:56 PM

OK I have a really stupid question for you, yoda. What are the notifications I'm getting? I keep thinking it's a pm but when I click on it I just see a post i made.

The Rodent 02-04-17 04:58 PM

Re: IMDB Alumni, post here!

:D
It's a +rep for a post.
Someone has given you a reputation mark for said post.

Dani8 02-04-17 05:03 PM

Re: IMDB Alumni, post here!

Is that like a thumbsup on stalk book? Thanks rodent.

Yoda 02-04-17 05:04 PM

Re: IMDB Alumni, post here!

Reputation is like upvotes, or +1s, or whatever other sites might call them. Just little votes to express approval, agreement, appreciation, etc. One per person per post.

You'll see that red notification badge for any number of things: it might mean new messages, new reputation, new profile comments, new post comments, that a review has been approved, etc. Just click on the avatar the red notification badge is sitting on top of to see the specifics.

The Rodent 02-04-17 05:06 PM

Re: IMDB Alumni, post here!

Pretty much, yeah

At the top right of someone's post, you'll see a thumbs up, a speech bubble, and a cogwheel. If you click the thumb, you +rep that post, which is why you'll see some posts with a red flag at the top right and the number of how many times it's been repped.

Dani8 02-04-17 05:08 PM

Re: IMDB Alumni, post here!

ahh rightyo. I feel so old when it comes to net speak. thanks champ. Might need a walking frame soon at this rate. Pretty impressed so far. I've been inviting some imdb friendly refugees.

Another stoopid question - is there an edit function? My typing is getting pretty crappy and I frequently need to edit for spellink.

edit to add - never mind. just found it.

The Rodent 02-04-17 05:09 PM

Re: IMDB Alumni, post here!

Yeah, the cogwheel at the top right of your own post will open a popup box with the edit option.

Jesus I feel thick now - for 2 years I've been using tiny pieces of post-it notes placed on the screen to make corrections

Yoda 02-04-17 05:14 PM

Re: IMDB Alumni, post here!

Good rule of thumb for stuff here: anything beyond the basics is hidden from view until you need it. So, lots of options "under" that cog at the top right of each post, and you'll get links for each user's Profile, Posts, and Message if you hold your mouse over their avatar inside threads.

The Rodent 02-04-17 05:15 PM

Re: IMDB Alumni, post here!

:D
MoFo (Movie Forums) is pretty straight forward once you're used to it.

The site went through a massive overhaul a couple years back, Yoda even bought a purpose server for it and moved the boards across from the rented server, so basically the site is now his own thing.
The board was a basic forum before, but now it's a really personalised forum with lots of kooky functions and fun stuff going on rather than basic and bog-standard.

Re: IMDB Alumni, post here!

Oh, since this thread is kind of a catch-all: I should let you IMDB-eople know that we do a lot of cool Oscar-related stuff. For example, if you look in the site's header you'll see a big ol' Oscar statuette in the top right corner. Click on that dude or right here) to make your Oscar picks. If you pick the most right, you get a DVD or Blu-ray. A modest prize, but hey: free.

We also record a giant podcast about the Oscars (it's happening tomorrow afternoon and it'll be up in a few days), and we have a live Oscar chat (in a chat room, rather than in these threads) on the night of the ceremony. This'll be our 10th year doing the live chat, and we update everyone on the picks leaderboard throughout the night.

Hope you guys stick around long enough to participate, because it's usually a lot of fun.

Dani8 02-04-17 05:25 PM

Re: IMDB Alumni, post here!

Ha. I had only just told a buddy on imdb that you were really friendly, then BAM, I tripped and fell over.

That sounds cool about the oscars. I don't usually watch awards because I find them so deadly dull, but that's something that would interest me.

Their inherent dullness is one of the main reasons we do it. I pretty much never watched the broadcast, let alone all of the broadcast, until we started doing these chats. Now I never miss it.

It's not the chats at fault... it's MoFo in general that's to blame for you never leaving your desk anymore.

Re: IMDB Alumni, post here!

I'm an IMDB user & alumni.

But I am concerned about a sudden influx of people to this site from other sites who may not be ready to assimilate to the MoFo guidelines, culture and values, or who may want to impose a different set of guidelines or values upon the freedoms of MoFo members.
Therefore, it might be a good idea to place a temporary ban on allowing sudden mass immigrations from certain specific sites... just temporary until we can figure out how to handle it.

;)

The ban should only be about 90 days, but temporary, believe me. Any one who arrives here during the ban may be detained until they can be extremely vetted (hey, it's better to inconvenience a few people rather than put the entire site at risk.) And we're going to build a firewall between this site and IMDB and, believe me, we're going to make IMDB pay for it!

;)

Well, I don't feel particularly old but I'm not a youngin either. I dont drool over 20 something actors like a crazy lovestruck stan if that gives an indication of which generation I might belong to. It's okay, I imagine it takes some adjustment going from the IMDb forums to this one. I find the threads at IMDb hard to read sometimes because the formatting is so different from what it is here.

But just because someone's post appears immediately after yours doesn't mean they're replying to you. Unless they quote you like I just did or directly address you in some way, they might be talking to someone else.

Dani8 02-04-17 08:32 PM

Re: IMDB Alumni, post here!

I take a few days to get used to a new format. I'll just wing it. I like it, though. Not complaining. Seems pretty smooth. And yes, the imdb format can get very confusing at times when people don't use nest. It's why I thought tongo was responding to me.

I'm from a recent wave of influx to MoFo, from a time just before these rules came into effect. Speaking from experience, you have two of the toughest badasses in Miss Vicky and Camo, questioning and doing all the noob screenings. If there is a need to have a list or registry of newcomers, TONGO has the most experience with lists. I think we're in good hands.:D;)

See, these noobs come in and then start adopting alternate identities and saying they're someone else - there's no way to know the real reasons they're coming here. Then we have noob lovers like Tongo who want to let them all in here no matter who they are or where they're from. Yoda better adopt extreme vetting now before it's too late, otherwise we might have another situation like eBay of 2016 - when they granted amnesty to all their banned members and drove almost all members away by re-formatting their boards!

(Okay, enough comedy jokes!)

Mods aren't strict exactly on here, but the rule is PG-13. Anyone breaking the rules does get a fair trial though as a benefit-of-the-doubt sort of thing.
If anyone comes here with the mindset of spreading filth, insults and trolling, they usually last about 3 days max.

Re: IMDB Alumni, post here!

Reposting this again for anyone who missed:

MoFo is a privately owned and run forum, the owner Yoda, overhauled the site a couple years back (the site is still going through the overhaul tbh with new additions and tweaks)... and he bought out a custom server for the forum too so he has complete and total control over what happens on here and pretty much all of the stuff on here, from quizzes, top 10 lists on profiles and the pictures they link to, the lists sections, the chat room (when it's opened) to the boards themselves... is code written by Yoda.

The Mods are a circle of Yoda's trusted friends and colleagues, so basically MoFo is a forum like no other.
Not a corporate owned thing, not run by faceless internet "employees" who go from site to site Modding, not run by 13 year old power-hungry administrators who have started their own forum by renting from an online server.

MoFo is one of a kind.

^^
Yes, the IP will be banned if someone repeat offends. In the 16 year history of the forum, there's only been one person I know of that was allowed to come back, and he then got banned again within a couple weeks.

See, there's no need to come onto a forum just to insult and offend everyone.
People on MoFo come onto MoFo to talk, discuss movies (plus a few politics threads and other stuff)... but we're here to have fun.

Sure arguments happen, which is natural, but there's no need to simply troll and insult and cause trouble... and Movie Forums is a place for the kind of person who wants to discuss rather than insult.
Trolls and spammers who simply want to cause sh*t all the time should find themselves somewhere else, they're not welcome here, and the owner won't stand for it.

Everyone is welcome that wants to be part of an online community based on a mutual interest... and the PG-13 rule is a pretty solid starting point when it comes to comfort for everyone :)

Re: IMDB Alumni, post here!

When it comes to a general sci-fi thread, I'm not entirely sure there is one.
You'll probably find a few threads on what your favourite sci-fi movies are, but a general thread might now actually exist.

A lot of MoFos tend to start their own lists though of favourite movies. Whether it's sci-fi, thrillers, animation and so on.
I have my own sci-fi list (the link is in my banner) if you're interested in having a look ;)

Yes, Camo made some observations [now clarified] that prompted DTeam and Odum to think twice about this Forum, specially with the presence of Joby Dimms.
Camo and Sexy Celebrity are not MoFo, I am not MoFo, not even Yoda - we are a community.

We all do not agree with one another, but no poster dictates who comes or goes, old timers included. Hopefully they will come back and see for themselves, and not overreact to some old timer taking sides in some others sites squabble. That certainly gave off the wrong impression.

Sorry Camo just calling it like I see it (or whatevers left of the first few pages it looks that way).

As I explained to Yoda, both Dteam and Odum are pretty nice guys who are fed up with the likes of Joby [though IMDB has its own plans for the future, I wouldn't be surprised the slightest if people like Joby Dimms who have 50+ sock accounts, massively reports threads and posts rather offensive and quite distasteful comments [border line criminal if not totally] made IMDB the cesspool it is today and forced them to cut the forums].

So, when Camo made his observations [I personally ] and as soon as Joby lurked his face it was natural that they responded with a "okidokie".

But, like I said, it has been clarified.

not might but should!
sci-fi movies need their own general thread

did you make your own list ?
erm.. i don't want to sound to be rude
but " A.I. Artificial Intelligence" on no. 25 ?
isn't that a bit too high for that movie ?

also does time bandit really worth watching ?
i mean like for collection

Well you see Yukio, Rodent gives every sci fi film a ridiculously high rating so that sort of thing is to be expected. :D

Re: IMDB Alumni, post here!

You on about Time Bandits and AI being in the lists section at the top of the page?
Those lists are forum wide lists and lists taken from other sources for you to check off.

But yeah, pretty much all of the regulars on here have made their own lists.
Favourite Movies Lists are usually the thing. Like, a personal top 100 movies. I've done that myself, and I've got a sci-fi list as well that goes from year to year since 1950.

Please make sure to go into your User CP, upload an avatar, upload a profile banner, fill in your signature, make a custom user title, make a top ten, and maybe fill in some personal info in your profile. Also be sure to click on the "Lists" section in the upper right (in the black bar, underlined in green) and check off the movies you've seen from the various lists there.

We've got a great community here and I hope you'll all stick around and become part of it. We've got a lot of activities, too, including forum wide lists, Hall of Fame, and tournaments. You're too late to vote in the Top 100 Sci-Fi Countdown that will be starting soon, but feel free to post and follow along when the countdown begins. We'll be doing a Top 100 Movies of the 1940s after that, which you can vote in. If you have any questions or concerns, our admin Yoda and our mods (like Sedai, who posted earlier) are all very friendly and helpful.
You are acting like a real president now!

He hasn't been online in about 36 hours. That MoFo needs to sign on and respond to my PM!

I just read that in a really deep, gravelly voice. It was so cool.
