Before my sixties watching for the list began, The Grinch would have made my list. I'm surprised it couldn't make top 100 and I do wish it would have.

The Grinch already made the Cartoon List. Let's not make The Grinch be so greedy. Other movies want a chance! Serves you right, Grinch!

Friendly Mushroom! 07-01-15 06:26 PM

I almost gave the Grinch an extra point (it was 4 on my list) but I decided not to so my 3rd place could have an extra point if it needed it.

Manos was my number 25. And I deliberately put it there for it to be on the one point section. And I watched it WITHOUT the witty commentary by the MST3K cast. It was painful.

I have not seen either of the first two films. Much like all the other lists, I expect to see my first film show up in the 70's and maybe the 80's range. Then it will be a slow trickle of films before more and more show up.

I am glad this list is finally starting. Always so much fun, and a great part of being a MoFo.

I haven't seen neither of those films starting off this list. I want to watch both though after reading into them.

Sad to see The Grinch not making the list. I had it at #13, which is quite high for a short. Especially considering I rarely put shorts on my list.

I'm looking forward to the next set!

Yes, the #25 entry on your list is only worth 1 point, so if nobody else voted for it, then it only got your 1 point, and it's on the list in the second post. If your #25 entry is not on that list, then somebody else also voted for it.

Yes. The one pointers are films that got 1 point only. If your number 25 did not show up, other people voted for it.

The Breakdown...

A Taste of Honey

1st (25 points), 7th (19 points), 9th (17 points)

Seconds

5th (21 points), 7th (19 points), 15th (11 points), 16th (10 points)

Notes

Both films were tied with another. A Taste of Honey appeared one three lists, so ranks the lowest. Seconds and another film both appeared on four lists, but the other placed higher on an individual list, so appears next in the countdown.

Re: The MoFo Top 100 of the 60s: Countdown

A Taste of Honey was my number 1. It only just scraped the countdown, too, just shows how much points do matter!

One thing that makes this film stand out for me, from other popular British New Wave films of the era, is that instead of the typical 'angry young man' of films like Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, we've got a young woman, with the significant supporting characters being her mother, her black boyfriend and the gay friend she moves in with for a time.

Another thing is the tone. Although this is a film about a working class girl with a neglectful mother, who lives in poverty and finds herself pregnant after a brief affair with a sailor, it's far from a misery memoir. It's sad, it's funny, it's very British, offbeat and human.

It's also beautifully filmed in black and white and superbly acted.

I agree with everything TN says. It always seemed like a landmark film to me, one in which a girl was deciding her own mind and wasn't being pushed around . It's not a film that's plays for sympathy or sentimentality, it feels real, and it feels close to home. It was my number 7. I'm very happy it's in the top 100 even tho it feels too low.

I like Seconds less but it has a number of striking scenes. This will give you a taste of Frankenheimer's direction, James Wong Howe's cinematography and Jerry Goldsmith's music.

I was pretty busy during the voting period so I didn't get to watch even a tiny fraction of what I'd hoped (and my list is a little shallow as a result). But the flip side is that I can use the list results to help prioritize which of the films I haven't seen, too.

I don't think there has been a consensus on which Top 100 countdown is next. IMO the 1950s makes sense. Anyone who truly loves cinema should also give the 1950s a look. There's lots of very important movies in that decade.

Re: The MoFo Top 100 of the 60s: Countdown

Yeah there's no consensus yet as far as I'm aware. Docs have been getting brought up a lot lately though. Personally I'd prefer docs so we have a different countdown in between decades like we had with Animation.

This may be a bit early to start discussing this

ANIMATION IS NOT A GENRE!!! :p

Friendly Mushroom! 07-02-15 04:27 PM

If the 50's list isn't next I'm okay. Personally I'm just not that psyched for a documentaries list. A comedies or action list would be my pick.

Citizen Rules 07-02-15 04:46 PM

Re: The MoFo Top 100 of the 60s: Countdown

When I heard talk about doing documentaries, it was about the Documentary HOF, I think Sean was going to run that?

I'm OK if 50s are not next. But we do need to hit all the decades. The countdowns started at present and has worked it's way back. So at some point there needs to be a 50s, then a 40s then a 30s...from there I would do a Silent era countdown, now there's unexplored territory!

But for fun, maybe every one wants to do comedies like FM said? Comedies get little respect so a countdown list for them would be different and fun:)

Maybe the next countdown should be the first 50 years of the 1900's.

1900-1950?

Instead of just doing the '50's, the '40s, the '30s, the '20s, etc.

Well, wait, no... I'm forgetting 51-59.

1900-1959, then.

Well, let's say 60 years. 1899-1959.

I was thinking about what would be done about the 1920's. The thing is that I think the '30's through '50's each deserve their own lists. But I don't know if enough people have seen enough movies from the 1920's for one. Maybe there could be a combined list for the '20's and '30's. I think that could work out. Although, I've created my own lists before for each decade. I never make a list just for the 1920's. I just called it "Silent Films". That, of course, could then include something like "The Artist", I suppose, but I never go beyond a 1930's Chaplin film when I make out that specific list. And then it can also include films before the '20's, too.

But I think the '40's and '50's still should get their own.

Seconds went pretty close to making my list.

Had been meaning to watch The Trial but never got around to it.

It'd be great if we got back to talking about the 60s list in this thread...

Really great. ;)

Seconds and A Taste of Honey are very good and Black Sunday was decent. Didn't really enjoy The Trial. None were on my list.

Ok then. I asked nicely to keep it on topic.

Now I'm not asking nicely.
