The Wheelers from Return to Oz. God, those dudes were creepy... I think the worst thing about them was that they got right up behind Dorthy when they came around multiple times, and who knows what they would've done had they gotten her. Not grabbed, what with their wheels - maybe run over her? Their laughs were a thing of beauty. I recommend that movie just for the maniacal laughter.

When I was about 8 yo I saw a movie (sorry, can't remember the title) about a scientist who lived on an island. He invited his daughter to come visit as he had a new experiment to show her. When they arrived at the island, no one was to be found. Turns out the scientist had created a man out of mud who then turned on his creators and killed them all. The daughter brought some friends along and they all get knocked off one by one. The survivors eventually figure out that salt water will kill the monster. This would have been in the late 70s. I was scared to death. I would not go to bed by myself for months.

My mom had to carry me out of a showing of Snow White when I was a toddler - although I'm still not sure what scared me - it was either the Queen, the Queen disguised as a witch or the Magic Mirror. (I'm guessing it was the mirror as it seems the "spookiest".)

from the original Land of the Lost. The Zarn (an interdimensional traveler) was in a couple of episodes. In one of them he had a helper robot - "Fred". It was just show's producer's re-using a prop (the internal metal skeleton of the T-Rex models) but for some reason a big armless robot dinosaur was absolutely terrifying to me.

The oldest memory I have is a nightmare where that stupid thing was standing over me in my bedroom when I was something like 5 years old.

I watched Salem's Lot at an age when I was evidently not ready for such things, because it scarred me pretty bad. As I sprinted down the hallway to my bedroom every night I had to pass a dark room with a chair facing the door, and I was convinced that one night I'd look in there and see Geoffrey Lewis sitting there staring at me.

I don't recognize Lady Elaine. Is she from Mister Rogers' Neighborhood?

Yes she is. I didn't watch Mr. Rogers often and that entire world that the trolley went to is a big reason. I didn't like the King or that weird meow meow kitty either but Lady Elaine was just a nightmare of a puppet.

Regan/Pazuzu was the only time I got scared watching something. It was a trauma, I was six. Watched hidden from my parents just to go to their room sleep with them 'cause I was so freaking scared of the dark. ha-ha
The image of Regan going down the stairs haunted my dreams for months.

Years ago I worked in a Savings Bank. The Head Teller looked exactly like Lady Elaine. She had red blotchy skin, bulbous nose AND she was very short. I had to hold in a laugh every time I spoke to her. It felt like I was talking to a hand puppet.

My son asked me once what was the scariest movie. I said no movie is scary, there are scary scenes in movies. He asked what I thought was scary scenes. The window scratching from Salem' s Lot and the ending of Carrie. I know the ending of Carrie scene on YouTube scared him, when I showed it to him.

Ah, yeah. The scene where they tried to get Damien to go to church.

Little Ash 06-17-22 11:46 PM

I was a little kid in the early 80s so I was both drawn to and terrified of Freddy. The, "he'll kill you in your dreams," is a good way to make those nightmares hit harder. Also the malleability of dream logic of when the world will shift and just try to kill you is tough to reason your childhood brain out of.

ETA, also growing up near to an area referred to as the blood triangle, sharks. Mainly great whites. Jaws was to blame for a large part of this. I'm not sure if Bruce counts as a character or a concept.

But in terms of sheer terror, we didn't have a nanny, there weren't stray panes of glass on trucks in my childhood, but every ******* Sunday... those clothes were a form of torture and the service was so boring and long.

We never dressed like that for church. My father is from a small Missouri town and they went to whatever church was in walking distance. My mother went to the RLDS church in Independence and was embarrassed as they were the poorest family so they got charity stuff. Religion was never forced on my siblings and I.

Have read the entire thread and I can’t actually think of one. I’ve had a disturbed childhood, heh, watching horror since I was 5 (cinephile family oversight, no doubt), but if anything, I’d agree with Norman Bates as mother. The only scene that’s ever stayed with me in this kind of truly sickening way, as already noted elsewhere, was the grandmother’s legs melting in Dante’s Peak. Honestly don’t think any Saw shit or anything from the horror catalogue even comes close. *shrug*

Mine's from Cujo too. I deliberately picked a harmless looking picture of his. But that thing was a monster in the movie.

Claim to fame: I knew Danny Pintauro when he was a child (just a year of two before Cujo). He lived near me (1 block away) and I'd walk past his house everyday from my bus stop during high school. He'd often be outside and we'd talk as I passed by. He was a cute little kid, but at the time I had no idea he was going to be a movie star (or at least a TV star on Who's the Boss).

Growing up in Florida from 85-91, horror was at an all time high. Jason, Freddy, Michael, Chucky….all frightened me. Child’s Play gave me an immediate nightmare after I watched it where I was attacked by my sisters doll.

But the worst? Jaws and Alligator. Swimming in a lake or the Ocean, as one tends to do every weekend in Florida, meant taking a risk that you would get eaten alive by a alligator or shark (especially the latter in the eyes of a 10 year old).

I could convince myself the others don’t exist, but actual predators? That’s a different story.

They didn't have a wide catalogue of frightening characters when I was a kid. The classic Universal monsters had been around forever but they weren't exactly nightmare inducing.

But I will go along with The Wicked Witch from The Wizard of Oz. Especially when she's skywriting SURRENDER DOROTHY. That level of extravagance and dissolution offended my prosaic sensibilities. Wicked Witch was off the chain and I didn't like it.

Definitely King Kong, the 1933 version. I saw the movie on TV when I was very young, and it's the scene where Anne Darrow is in the tall building and the giant ape peers into the window, his face covering the whole window. For about 2 weeks, I had to have the curtains shut in my bedroom by an adult, who would check outside to be sure there was no giant ape in the back yard.

Another one that I was probably too young to see, The Forbidden Planet, the Id Monster. You see foot prints in the sand, hear strange sounds, then it starts roaring. You don't see anything until the earthling's ray guns outline that giant monster. That one lived on in my dreams for a while too. Given a lack of digital animation, the hand-done animation where you see the monster outlined by the raygun bolts was very effective and the sound scared the crap out of this kid. I still like that effect now.

About 3 minutes into this clip the monster gets going. The sound production in this one is terrific for that time, so if you have good sound, it's worth turning it up.

Re: What character scared you as a child?

None. It was those characters that were scared of me!

Wyldesyde19 05-17-23 03:14 AM

Growing up in Tallahassee, Florida from 1985-1991, the specter of Ted Bundy still loomed large over the city. My older sister had a curfew. I still remember the live news of his execution. This was in 1989 I think?
So, 11 year old me was just learning that the killers in films could actually exist. This was amplified when I learned the Texas Chainsaw Massacre was based off of actual murderer, although exaggerated, of course. Still, 11 year old me didn’t know much outside that “he existed”. So now I start thinking any slasher film could have happened.
This was right when Halloween and Friday the 13th were dominating the cinemas. And of course, I was afraid they could exist in some way beyond the screen. So those two had real estate in my over active imagination.

It gets worse……there was this neighbor who convinced me that Bigfoot, or maybe something similar, existed in the swamplands near our house, and the woods behind us, by telling me tall tales that he found duck and/or geese torn up to bits….by something unimaginable.
So now, any creature film spooked me because it could easily be in my friggin back yard…..

It gets worse…..somewhat down the road from our house, under a small bridge, my brother and a mutual friend found a dead deer torn up and half way inside a garbage bag along with other animal carcasses strewn about. The horns had been removed. The rumor? Occult sacrifices.*
So now I had that fear going for me….

So yeah, pretty much every shadow spooked me with my overactive imagination and the stories being passed around with these occurrences.
And any horror movie legitimately frightened me because….well….it could have been real to me at that age.

*I was just asking my brother about this to make sure I remember the details correctly, and we both agree that it was likely hunters who wanted the horns as a keepsake. As a child, however, we believed any story that was passed on to us.

Yes, In the Seventies that serial killer fear was real. My family was visiting New York at the time of the Son of Sam killings and it was rumored that he went after woman with long brown hair. At least, that was what I was told.
As for the occult or satanic practices, a documentary on Netflix posits (or at least the man who the doco is about posits) that the Son of Sam murders in New York were linked to satanic worship some how. Or it could be that David Berkowitz just enjoyed toying with the writer who visited him. the documentary series is called The sons of Sam: A Descent into Darkness.

Oh yeah!! That was hands down the greatest sci-fi movie in that era, and I think it still holds up today. Wonderful special effects for its day. It scared the hell out of everybody.

It was probably the first time that an established serious star actor was featured in a sci-fi film. It's also a kick to see the young Leslie Nielson in his role.
