Re: Iron Man
MoviesOnline had a chance to sit down at Comic Con with Robert Downey, Jr. to talk about his upcoming 2008 movie, "Iron Man,” the big budget Marvels Comic adaptation directed by Jon Favreau.
The film centers on billionaire industrialist Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), who becomes a super hero after a near-death incident. After Stark creates a life support suit to keep himself alive, he decides to use the technology in his Iron Man armor to fight crime. The movie also stars Terrence Howard, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges, Hilary Swank and Samuel Jackson. "Iron Man” promises to be one of the most exciting films of 2008. Here’s what Robert Downey, Jr. had to tell us about it: MoviesOnline: So how have you been since some of us saw you last? ROBERT DOWNEY, JR.: What do you think? MoviesOnline: I think you’re excellent, amazing and I think that you’re extremely happy right now. ROBERT DOWNEY, JR.: Right. You make my job really easy. MoviesOnline: Are you sad that the film has wrapped? Do you miss playing Tony? ROBERT DOWNEY, JR.: I wouldn’t wish this on an enemy but I went right from this and two weeks later I was shooting in Hawaii with Ben Stiller and Jack Black. That is fantastic but wrapping something that was this epic and going into pre-production and make-up tests and starting something so soon but the truth be told is it was ideal because the crash from this would have been so hard. I probably would’ve been in my head "I’m not Tony. When can’t I be Tony again?” MoviesOnline: What did you like about Tony so much? ROBERT DOWNEY, JR.: What person are you talking in because honestly I got geared up again, I showed up today and this is a suit from the movie and I was kind of playing with my hair in the bathroom and Avi Arad walks in and the whole reason that there’s this studio to do this movie and I’m just with him in this big can and in the handicapped bathroom cleaning my boots and putting them back on and he came in and he’s like it’s going to be good on Thursday. It’s going to be good. We started talking about some other movies that a friend of his is doing that I should read. He’s going like I’d heard about people’s careers being enhanced, thwarted in convention room bathrooms but anyway so then I said back to business. I’ve got to get it up and they just unveiled the Mark I suit and I kind of was like overwhelmed and Favreau was all P.T. Barnum and he’s digging it. He’s been here for 3 days so he knows the drill. I just came in and I was like struck dumb. How do you get out of this—just go like this for 2 hours. MoviesOnline: Can you talk about your experiences—have you been on the convention floor? ROBERT DOWNEY, JR.: Never. MoviesOnline: Can you talk about what it was like? ROBERT DOWNEY, JR.: I will never. You know what it’s like. I mean, it’s massive. It’s a true democracy with a lot of chaos in there too. I mean, I get why it’s become so popular, not that it wasn’t popular before, but why it’s become so integral to marketing and approval and all that. It’s that thing. It’s like talking about surfing. How do you know until you paddle out and catch that first wave what it really feels like. It’s so energetic and wild and chaotic. I’m walking there with the Tony Stark suit with security guys like pushing baby carriages out of the way so I can get to my signing. Oh God. MoviesOnline: Do you feel any extra pressure when you’re acting knowing that it’s a character that a lot of people love and you have to get it right? ROBERT DOWNEY, JR.: I mean, there’s always that point in any process where you feel the pressure. That’s self-centered fear. In this case, I think I just became a geek for Iron Man myself. The added value is that I think I’ve got the chops to be able to pull it off. But they’re in pre-production and I’ve got an office in the production offices by where Howard Hughes assembled the Spruce Goose and there was a lot of energy there and I’d roam around from one thing to the next. I’d talk to the art department and I’d be like hanging with all these just monsters of cinema and effects and storytelling and cinematography and so I really soaked it up. I was just like what do I need to do and half the time I was like swilling creatine and working on my arms for those 11 seconds in the trailer where I’m like grrrrr. I will never be that muscular again. MoviesOnline: What made you decide that you wanted to take this role? ROBERT DOWNEY, JR.: I’m not a kid anymore externally and if you’re going to do something like this, you want to do it while there’s a very low embarrassment factor age wise. Also, it’s Jon Favreau. That guy is a national treasure and to be able to do something like this with him and maybe have the opportunity to do it a couple more times—it’s a no brainer. MoviesOnline: What about seeing your face on McDonald’s or Burger King and stuff like that? Are you ready for that too? ROBERT DOWNEY, JR.: Yeah. MoviesOnline: Are you going to have fun with that? ROBERT DOWNEY, JR.: Sure. Why not? I want to be a Happy Meal. Scratch that—we’re with Burger King. I don’t even know what a Happy Meal is. That was a passive reference. MoviesOnline: So now that you’ve played Iron Man do you feel stronger? ROBERT DOWNEY, JR.: No, I told you I was swollen up and now I’ve shrunk up again. It’s nice not to be carrying those extra pounds. For me, my arms being like one centimeter bigger means I’m swollen up. MoviesOnline: Any complaints with the armor? Michael Chiklas complained about wearing the same armor. Did you sweat a lot? ROBERT DOWNEY, JR.: We took turns complaining. There’s two other guys and I’d come in on the day he was shooting second unit and he’d be like laid out in a pool of sweat and still like in half the suit and he’d be like, ‘Dude, you’re on tomorrow right?’ And I’d be like, ‘Come on, dude. We’re going to do close ups and I’ll swing through the thing’ and he goes, ‘Cool.’ Then he’d come in…we had like a support group. He’d come in the next and he’d hold my Iron Man hand and be like, ‘Man, can I get you something? Maybe an Advil?’ Then we’d both go visit the third guy. MoviesOnline: You’ve done so many big movies, is there a chance you’d go back to small movies after that? ROBERT DOWNEY, JR.: What? There are no small movies. After that trailer played the first time, I was so tripped out and excited and proud and just to get that reaction. I started off in theater and that was kind of like putting a whole play of everything 400 people at the top of their field can do best and putting it all in this little package and playing it for thousands of people who get it and are really critical and really, really understand what makes things like that work or not. It was-- I don’t know how to say it--it was the magic bullet, you know? Suffice to say. MoviesOnline: Before you go could you just tell us about your part in "Tropic Thunder”? ROBERT DOWNEY, JR.: I um…no. I’m going to stay on topic for a change, but thank you for asking. MoviesOnline: Which Tony Stark do you prefer? Ultimate or the old Tony Stark? ROBERT DOWNEY, JR.: I’m a modernist but the origins are great. I’m an equal opportunity destroyer. (he holds up his hand) That’s not even my strong repulser hand. MoviesOnline: Congratulations, it looks great. ROBERT DOWNEY, JR.: Thank you. Still cannot stand the wait. |

Personally, beside the fact that he's been a consistently great actor for years, I think he's more than competent at playing flawed, emotionally stretched characters who inevitably do great things (and if we're talking about Tony Stark, well... there you go). Recent examples include War of the Worlds, The Last Samurai, Magnolia, and Jerry Maguire. But I imagine your only aversion to him is that he's a self-proclaimed spokesman for Scientology, and that his erratic behavior is more than laughable. Still, I'm capable of separating the actor from the whackjob, and apparently so is Cruise. He still puts out consistently good work. So there. |
Re: Iron Man
Nice!
sfilm was all like "Pfffft!" and I was like, well, I guess he has a point I mean- Then Sleezy was like "Yeah, that was me, and here's why: BOOM!" Then I was all Nice! cause it was awesome! But seriously Tom Cruise would've done a great job. If he combined Top GUn Tom with Samurai Tom and a dash of Fourth of July Tom it would've been balls to the wall. Whenever I heard about this movie I was thinking Johnny Depp all the way, but now that I've seen Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, I totally expect RDJ to blow me away. |

It would make sense (as he puts it) that they would probably want a chapter for each character before they start playing with the idea of combining them.
I bet they make an Avengers movie a Captain America origin movie (like the animated DVD movie from Marvel). I'd also bet that after Iron Man hits big, they would want a sequel before they shoot Avengers. Ant-Man, Thor, Iron Man 2, Nick Fury? and THEN an Avengers. Where would an Incredible Hulk 2 fit in to all of this? |

Re: Iron Man
I've got a new bad feeling about this movie. I saw a trailer on TV with the song.... IRON MAN playing in the background. Is that their idea of creativity?
"So, you're making the soundtrack to the new movie, Iron Man?" "Yeah, and it's really hard. I tried thinking of things that rhyme with Iron Man, but the only thing I came up with was Iron Ham... Iron Ham isn't even a song, or a band's name... Wait, yep, I got it..." "Well, what is it? "You're gonna' love this." "...Well?" "Iron Man." "Iron Man?" "Iron Man." "The famous song by, Black Sabbath?" "That's right. Iron Man." "Wouldn't that be too obvious?" "Wouldn't it be too obvious to not not have it in the movie?" "... I'm sorry but either you're gonna' have to make a comment or a complaint. 7-11 has not hired me to deliver advice, unless its related to one of our products." "...Iron Man could make 7-11 Iron Ham hot dogs." *click* For some reason that's exactly how I imagine it, and most other things. |
Re: Iron Man
Great assumption: "well they played the song that's the same as the title, must be bad." Of course they're going to play it. I also heard Cochise by Audioslave and Back in Black by AC/DC in the trailer, so not every song has to relate to the title.
You probably also complained when Aerosmith covered Spider-man on the movie soundtrack... Geez...come back when you have a real complaint. |

I've never been a big fan of comic book movies, except for the first couple of Christopher Reeve Superman movies and most of the Batman franchise (sorry, George Clooney - I adore you, man, but, really...yikes!). But...I can't wait for IRON MAN.
It's an absolute joy to see Robert Downey, Jr. kicking ass and taking names in a big budget extravaganza. He's such a wonderful actor, and had such a long, long road back from the brink, that I would love to see him have a big, huge, juicy hit. I wish him every success, and continued good luck and sobriety. Can't help myself - I just love this guy. And the trailer rocked!!! |

Two Thumbs up from Phillips (Ebert Stand In) and Roeper.
Plus, this guy doesn't have "chief critic" after his name for nothing... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TB4loah_sXw Great style? Packs a punch? Classy? Super charged? Really Good? Oh yeah! The reason I'm intrigued by the Michael Phillips rave review is because he says it's more fun then Transformers but it's also well acted and intelligent. So, if it's fun AND smart then what's not to like? |
