I need to see that one. My dad, who's not much of a horror fan, likes it if I am not mistaken. Plus the film takes place, kinda, in my neck of the woods.

TORSO(1973)

a streak of bloodshed shocks a college campus, and four attractive girlfriends head for the safety of an isolated country villa. The guys in this film are such total creeps, all of em. Smdh. Yet the whole flick is quite well-shot & visually appealing, felt i wanted to take screenshots of the entire movie. As the girls succumb to their own erotic desires, their weekend of pleasure becomes a vacation of dismember at the hands, and blade, of the lecherous masked-man.

Chucky rips up Ghostface, that weird monster in The Funhouse, Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, Cropsy, Santa Claus, Dream Warrior Freddy, and all the others. Scream 2 and Ghostface used to be on top, but it fell, I decided I like Scream 4 more now. Because of lots of things but probably mainly Hayden Panettiere and her friend Marielle Jaffe.

The Funhouse (1981) jumped a lot. Gave it a
+ before but now I realize I like it a lot more than most of the movies in here. An ole Tobe Hooper 80s carnival flick. I am getting back in this mode and like watching slashers in the summer, maybe I'll find some more to write about. But none of that matters right now, bc Chucky took charge of The Vault.

Hi, I'm Chucky. Wanna play?

I've been feeling a "horror thing" myself lately. Maybe it is because of summer? I've reviewed things like Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3 and Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter in my review thread lately -- with more possibly on the way. I only like my old classic '80s horror for the most part, though. The good old days.

FRIDAY THE 13TH PT 2 (1981)

After killing Mrs. Voorhees, Alice Hardy can finally sigh with relief.
But there is just one problem- Jason never drowned at Camp Crystal Lake.

That's where this movie comes in. Yea yea, well it's time for a new approach. Chucky took charge of the Slash Vault, so he's the one watching this movie. Laughing at how it will never be as good as his. So listen up kiddos. Alice, the only survivor of the first movie, can't stop reliving the terror of the first movie. She wakes up, takes a shower like she wants to be Marion Crane from Psycho, then gets out and goes in the kitchen to the refrigerator and opens the door AND SCREAMS! AGHGGHHGGGHHH- It's the decayed head of that nasty ole hag Pamela Voorhees. Then BAM someone pops up and rams a screwdriver through Alice's head. Bye bye, gone, no scream queen career like Neve Campbell for you. Fast-forward five years and some idiot named Paul Holt opens a counselor training center right across the lake from Camp Blood. Paul Holt and his great reputation is training a new batch of counselors, finally the ladies start showing up. Yea shake that lil bimbo ass.

Later that night around the campfire Paul tells stories about that loser Jason. 5 years he's waited, on the prowl for intruders, for what those camp kids did to his mother. Later on half the counselors go into town, splitting up the staff, making it easier for Jason to start picking off teenagers one at a time. Divide and conquer.

Jason's back, resurrected to haunt Crystal Lake. Crazy Ralph aka Old Man Blood's watching them. Then gets chain-strangled by bag-faced Jason bc the hockey mask doesn't show up til the next one. Might as well grab two beers while you're reading this because Jason pulls off a double stab through the bed kill mid-coitus just like the scene from A Bay of Blood (1971), calling back to the roots of the slash vault. Jason uses all kinds of weapons in this, he's got a pike spear, a pitchfork, his trusty machete, a big kitchen knife, pulls off a hammer claw killshot, he's pulling out all the tools. The best part's when the final girl fools that oaf Jason Voorhees that she's his mother. Come to mommy, Jason. That's my boy, kneel down. Jason Voorhees, junior varsity, the JV team. That's what I'm gonna call him, bc none of that stuff keeps the JV from losing to Child's Play, better luck next time. Don't fukc with the Chuck, Hidey-ho!

Re: Slash Vault, Bloody Adventures with MoFo Nostromo

I went through a spell of watching Friday the 13th Part 2 a few times years ago when I first got it on Blu-ray. It's one of my favorites in the franchise.

That was supposed to be Chucky reviewing that? Not very convincing, I must say.

Captain Spaulding 07-17-16 05:53 PM

Surprised to see The Funhouse so high in your new standings and disappointed to see Peeping Tom so low. Although I guess I can understand. Even though Peeping Tom is head and shoulders above all those other films, quality-wise, it lacks the abundance of boobs, blood, and bad decisions that make some of those other slashers more "fun."

Outside of its finale, I have a hard time remembering much about Friday the 13th Part II, but I definitely like it more than several of the other films in the franchise. I'm ashamed to say that I've never seen a single Chucky film. He did a nice job with the write-up, but I figured it'd be more laden with profanity.

Have you ever seen Intruder (1989)? I can't remember if I mentioned it to you before or not, but I think it's arguably the most underrated slasher out there. Definitely one of my favorites of the genre. The movie takes place entirely in a supermarket. There's some very creative kills. Some excellent gore. A bit of style to how it's filmed. And a very bleak ending that I really dug. You should check it out if you haven't seen it. I'm confident that it'd get the Nostromo stamp of approval.

Don't go N'SYNC on us again, please. And I hope you keep updating this thread, too, since it's one of my favorites on the forum.

Ðèstîñy 07-18-16 01:39 PM

We/my family, always look up all the Friday the 13th's each year. We do a movie marathon, and I always make sure to watch the first two , as well as Friday the 13th Part Four, The Final Chapter. I really love those three the best. Then of course, there's the telekinesis girl. I get a kick out of that movie.

I love this thread. Great work.

PROM NIGHT (1980)

A masked killer, related to the accidental death of a little girl
six years earlier,
stalks four teenagers at their high school's senior prom.

Watched this a month ago, with my awesome sister-in-law who likes horror movies. Prom Night, it's a retro slasher, starring Jamie Lee Curtis, in a scream queen follow up to Halloween (1978), with a ski-masked killer wielding a glass shard. Figured how could I go wrong, bought the blu-ray and everything. It's basically got three setups. First, it starts with a flashback to a prank-gone-wrong, where a group of children try to scare a little girl and cause her death. Second setup, now there's a mystery revenge killer. And third, the prom night 1980 setting. My sister-in-law and I kept talking about how easy it should be to at least make a decent entertaining slasher flick set at prom.

All three of those setups fail. Although we ended up having fun with it anyways, only because we made our own entertainment. Making fun of the movie the whole time. This was after The Fog, before Terror Train and Halloween II, and this is worse than all of those. Unfortunately, this flick is awfully BORING. Earning the title of WORST movie in here, even beating out that garbage The House on Sorority Row (1984). I'm at least giving it credit for having the optics to trick me. Even making the post made me think I liked the movie more than I did, bumping my rating up a .5 point. So at least it has that going for it.

FRIDAY THE 13TH PT III (1982)

Could you just slow down, please? There's a whole weekend ahead of us, let me get to know you again... Let me get to know this place again

A seriously injured Jason Voorhees goes to a lakefront store to find clothes, and while Harold the mustache dude store owner is drinking Jack Daniels on the sh!tter- Jason smashes him in the chest with a meatcleaver. Then stabs the wife, with rollers in her hair, through the back of the head with a hair pin. After an eventful intro, we meet the new cast of kids who are going off to Higgens Haven in their van for the weekend. There's Chillie and Chuck the beard-bong hippie guy, Debbie and Andy who get it on in a hammock, fatboy prankster Shelly and a girl named Vera- she's hot, and the final girl- Chrissie. There's also a biker gang that fat Shelly ticks off at the gas station when he backs into their motorcycles. Hunted by bikers AND...

http://i.ibb.co/rd5yDZm/f-13-pt3.png

I'm gonna go downstairs and get a brew, you want one?

So far I've seen Friday the 13th (1980), Pt II, this one, IV, VI, and Jason X (2001). This is my favorite so far... The characters- I like them better in this one. It doesn't feel like random teens getting hacked off, each one has unique quirks and distinctive character features before Jason gets to the killing, erasing Chuck the beard bong hippie guy while he's taking a dump in the outhouse while hitting a joint. Then going one-by-one through the house, Debbie's was notable- set down while reading about gore effects in a Fangoria magazine. Jason racks up a reasonable kill count, I counted 12, including the black biker dude who comes outta nowhere at the end to get slaughtered and even a cute little bunny gets it- how awful! But then, Chrissie starts to kick Jason's ass in an extended tension-packed finalé where she slams a massive shelf of books on Jason from upstairs, smashes him with an axe, and then hangs him at the entrance to the barn after WHACKING him over the head with a shovel! I felt like- these people know how to make a movie, they had fun with it... and I did too. My favorite of the series so far, and Jason puts on the hockey mask for the first time

Four unsuspecting young travelers are lured into a deserted wax museum called Slausen's Lost Oasis, named after the psychotic owner of the attraction. Story's a bit convoluted, but there's some gruesome imagery of pranks and mannequin tricks by the same art director from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Robert Burns, making it a watchable retro 70s slasher.

A high school senior class takes a graduation cruise, and indestructible psycho-slasher Jason Voorhees trails them to take a rare holiday from his lair at Crystal Lake to visit the Big Apple. Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990)

Two college students driving cross country are lured off the main highway and onto a desolate road. A maniac with a secret affection for rock music, named Leatherface, wearing a mask of skin, welcomes them to Texas by throwing a coyote through their front windshield then rips off their trunk a few minutes later. After that the college kids get in a car crash with Ken Foree, the cool black dude from the original Dawn of the Dead, who has to protect them from the hunters who watch the road and set up bear traps in the woods. Takes it some time, then it turns into a worthy viewing. Was going to give it another half point but the last minute could have wrapped it up with a better bang.

Student Bodies (1981)

Slasher spoof with a killer named 'The Breather,' who chases naughty high schoolers. Like Scream fifteen years later, everyone's a suspect. A refreshing slasher viewing that doesn't take anything seriously, though it does get somewhat repetitive in moments and isn't filmed in a very exciting way. Light years better than "Prom Night," but this is one silly ass movie!

@jiraffejustin I'm curious to get to see more of your slasher impressions. For a movie with recognised actors such as Viggo Mortensen and the previously mentioned Ken Foree, as well as promoting that hefty skin-faced Texas bumpkin and his backwoods family, I haven't really seen TCMIII talked about hardly anywhere.

Terrifier (2017)

Two friends celebrate Halloween night by going out to the bars, a blonde named Dawn and a brunette named Tara. At the end of their night they run into Art the psychotic clown at a pizzeria. Dawn comforts Tara, "he was just some douche bag in a costume acting like a retard because it's Halloween." Their car breaks down and Tara has to go find a bathroom in a rundown warehouse closeby. The way I've addressed this thread, I've wanted it to have a hangout vibe, rather than a disgusting nature- Well this movie went all out brutality. Recommended by @cat_sidhe Commend Terrifier for knowing its direction and not drifting, and therefore I contemplated giving it a higher score. Going with preference over execution in this case, an agonizing viewing that sticks in your psyche.

Terror Train (1980)

A group of college co-eds go on a masquerade bash onboard a chartered train on New Year's Eve. A film's tension can be enhanced by choosing the right setting for the drama to unfold. The train with its narrow hallways and claustrophobic cabins and cages make for the perfect arena where pranks, gags, and magic are more central than all-out gore. A unique and fun slasher released in the hot zone for the sub-genre between 1978 and 1983.

Deep Red (1975)

A musician named Marcus witnesses the murder of a renowned magician who could read people's thoughts. He reluctantly teams up with a determined female reporter named Gianna to explore the savage crime. Giallos, the snooty slashers for the arthouse aristocrats  I'm kidding, slightly, giallos have done rather well in here actually. They are a bit of a different beast next to American slashers, but I've enjoyed them well enough in here- Inferno, Torso, Bava's A Bay of Blood, and this. The unseen killer must recreate the specific conditions which will trigger the release of all his pent up madness, plus Goblin's music is just cool.

Intruder (1989)

Kicks off with an ex-boyfriend revenge angle, angry Craig and his mullet comes around the neighborhood supermarket looking for Jennifer the blonde checkout girl. It's a unique dramatic hook for the vault, a relationship dynamic invading the sense of community at the Walnut Lake Market. Craig's a bad boy just out of prison, and he's enraged that Jen is pushing him away. Meanwhile, the employees at the market relax and joke around, until a killer arrives on the night shift. Has unique transitions and balances the line well between horror and satire. There are some really good elements going on, ex-boyfriend revenge movie, twists and turns, with a cliffhanger that could be even more engaging than the film itself had the story continued. Missing something to lift it higher, but has the right kind of hangout vibe. Thanks @Captain Spaulding for the suggestion.

Scream (1996)

Right when Sidney Prescott's life seems to be returning to normal after her mother died the year before, a killer haunts the small town of Woodsboro. The film where the characters finally watch, love, and quote all the horror movies. Don't leave the house. Don't answer the door. Superb cast for my preferences including Neve Cambpell, Skeet Ulrich (her boyfriend), along with David Arquette, Courtney Cox, Drew Barrymore, Rose McGowan, and Matthew Lillard. A fun quality favorite, which earned the most of any slasher according to Box Office Mojo. Best kill is Tatum's death scene (Rose McGowan) with the garage door. oOoOo, I forgot all about that, favorite kills.

Anne Heche (Marion) steals $400,000 and hits the road. Relive the terror in Gus Van Zant's interpretation, this time with Vince Vaughn and more country accents. "No, people never run away from anything... Rain didn't last long, did it? Ya know what I think? I think we're all in our private traps. Clamped in em. We can never get out. Well, we scratch, and claw, but, only at the air. Only at each other. And for all of it? We never budge an inch." -Norman Bates. Recommended by @Sexy Celebrity Check in. Unpack. Relax. True that Vaughn doesn't fit the Anthony Perkins "good guy" model, which is I suppose in part made the original twist work quite well by casting Perkins against type. I do like Vince Vaughn though. One to watch if you're in the mood for a 90s version of the story, with a pretty enjoyable cast including Anne Heche, Viggo Mortensen, and Julianne Moore.

Sleepaway Camp 2: Unhappy Campers (1988)

Five years after the gruesome carnage at Camp Arawak, Angela is now a counselor at Camp Rolling Hills. And she is determined to teach the naughty teenage campers a lesson about morals, quickly earning the honor of Counselor of the week! Activities include bonfire stories, nature hikes, swimming, and singing the "Happy Camper" song, but camp kids start disappearing. Molly, one of the few "good campers," is played by Renee Estevez- who I just found out is the sister of Emilio Estevez and Charlie Sheen. She gets involved in lots of drama with Ally, the popular cheerleader girl, as they both have a crush on camp stud Sean Whitmore. Lots of skin, gore, humor, and 80s mullet hairstyles.
Terrific "teenage body" film.

Olivia Hussey as "Jess" and Margot Kidder as "Barb" co-star in a done-for house full of sorority girls ready to celebrate the holiday festivities. Jess is pregnant but doesn't really like her boyfriend all that much and is planning an abortion, while Barb is the house drunk with stories and jokes. Applies a cunning interplay of suspense, scares, and college wit. Sighting from awesome movie-dude John Saxon as Lieutenant Fuller, the police chief. One of the first American-made slashers, thick with frightful winter atmosphere as well as slow burn tension that builds to a rewarding finale.

The Bird With The Crystal Plumage (1970)

A dangerous maniac is at large, as there have been three unexplained murders during the last month. First victim was a salesgirl in an antique shop found dead in a park. The second victim, a hooker murdered under the bridge where she used to go with her customers. Number three, a student- she was killed on her way home from the movies. After he witnesses a mysterious new attack, lead player Sam Dalmas begins investigating. Once I started watching I realized I had watched this several years ago in a thread with @jiraffejustin and @Swan I think last time I saw the English dubbed version, this one was in Italian with subtitles. Recall being slightly tough on it then, I don't know if it was the language difference, but I really enjoyed it this time. May be my favorite giallo. Dario Argento's first movie, and I think it may be his best. Has that movie magic quality.

Suspiria?
Hard to say, as the favourites are a little fluid (in that they shift positions quite often depending on my mood/frame of mind). It's usually between Suspiria and Profondo Rosso, with Bird always hanging around there. Sometimes Tenebre looks for attention.

Candyman (1992)

A graduate student named Helen Lyle hears a folk legend of a hook-handed killer who appears if you look in a mirror and say his name five times. To write her thesis paper she goes to investigate Cabrini-Green, the rundown gang-ridden housing project haunted by the spirit. When a series of grisly slayings follow, with no other plausible cuprits in view, the police charge Helen for the harrowing crimes. The metropolitan setting and themes of ethnic tension are the best parts about Candyman which set it apart as unique from the others in here. Candyman, Candyman..... Candyman!

Tenebrae (1982)

Novelist Peter Neal arrives in Rome to promote his new mystery book. A TV book critic states during his on-air interview, "Tenebrae is about human perversion and its effects on society." The book critic asks the author, "What do you think are the effects of deviant behavior on our society?" .... Peter Neal responds, "Well first of all, the book isn't just about that." At the same time, there's an imitator killer going around Rome acting out the crimes in the bestselling book. Peter and his agent take charge of an investigation of the homicide. Of the Argento films I've seen so far, (Inferno, Suspiria, Deep Red, The Bird With The Crystal Plumage) this came across as rather empty and is my least favorite. Though Tenebrae does have the swanky chic rhythm and all that crisp, visual Italian style.

Urban Legend (1998)

Pendleton University student Natalie Simon finds herself surrounded by a tremendous cast of characters including Paul (Jared Leto) a writer for the school newspaper, Damon (Joshua Jackson) a bigtime prankster, Tosh (Danielle Harris) Natalie's gothic roomate, her attractive friend Brenda (Rebecca Gayheart), Sasha (Tara Reid) the voice of the school radio station, Reese a campus cop woman who's obsessed with and idolizes Pam Grier's "Coffy," AND a peculiar Abnormal Psychology Professor William Wexler (Robert Englund). Professor Wexler's teaching a lecture series on contemporary folklore. Of the late 90's slasher franchises, I always hear about Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. I LOVED this movie! It didn't have the marketable baddie like Ghostface to propel its sequels and merchendise to automatic success, although I actually enjoyed this viewing more than the Scream films. Being a 90s kid made this all the more a treat, I mean Joshua Jackson, really?! You need to relax, have some fun, and come to the party, okay?

You and Camo are both fans of Urban Legend, but it didn't do anything for me when I watched. I need to figure out what I am missing, because there has to be something there. I didn't care for Candyman either, but I'd probably give it close to the same score you did. I really enjoyed Tenebre, but it's not Suspiria level or anything like that.

All major American film studios rejected early cuts devoid of a musical score, so John Carpenter added music himself. The film was distributed locally in October 1978 in four theaters in Kansas City, and became an unexpected hit by word-of-mouth. Due to that, Halloween was chosen for screening at the November Chicago Film Festival that same year and its acclaim flung the film to substantial box office success. Michael Myers is sent to a mental institution when he is six years old, but he breaks out fifteen years later and returns to haunt his hometown of Haddonfield. The sound effects and music blend smoothly to create an atmospheric movie event. John Carpenter captures the childhood thrill of running around the neighborhood trick-or-treating on Halloween night, inventing a new legend for the Autumn holiday in 1978 with the masked shape. It caught my attention when I first began expanding my moviewatching enthusiasm in 2009. The Night HE Came Home.

Halloween (2007)

Rob Zombie's reinvention of the harvest slasher classic delves deeper into the character of Michael Myers and his violent compulsions. The film's been totally hammered and ravaged by critics, although it did earn the highest box office success of the franchise- earning more than $80 Million in its theatrical release. What I like in part is the fresh and different take on the background of Myers, in which he becomes consumed crafting masks to hide his face while imprisoned at Smith's Grove Sanitarium for his deeds. It would be difficult to match the child psychologist Dr. Samuel Loomis, originally played by Donald Pleasance, yet Malcolm McDowell comes through quite well for my preferences. Two things I'm not real crazy about from the original film are young Michael and Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode. Not that there's anything terribly wrong with them, those two elements strike me as quite average or normal, in the first film. Regardless, neither cause dilemmas in Rob Zombie's vision, with a different take on Michael and no Jamie Lee Curtis around. Add appearances from Danny Trejo, as "Cruz," Ken Foree as "Big Joe Grizzly," Sheri Moon Zombie as Michael's mom, Danielle Harris (Halloween 4: The Return Of Michael Myers, Hallween 5: The Revenge Of Michael Myers) as Annie Brackett, and Tyler Mane as grown slasher Michael to round out the cast and haunt Haddonfield. A retro-throwback for the horror genre that manages to stay fresh and energetic, a tough balancing act. Trick or treat, smell my feet, give something good to eat. If you don't, I don't care, I'll pull down your underwear.

Glad you liked it Nostromo. Should go through this thread when i get the chance as i'm interested in slashers right now. It's saying something that the Aunt Martha lady from the first Sleepaway Camp is the looniest and most freaky person in the whole thread, probably.

Happy to see you go for Urban Legend too, in some ways I felt Joshua Jackson was utilized SO well. They could have built a franchise around him, instead they went for this one really fun movie. Surprised me when I watched on Monday night- as movies go, for me, they crushed it

Absolutely, all the adults in that film are horrifying monsters. The pedo chef and murderous camp head as well, actually think they are the only three adults who are prominent unless the counselors aren't just older teens.

I wonder what the sequels are like. The ending was pretty awesome even though i saw it coming, think the movie was self-aware in that scene, it's the exact sort of thing the end of the first Scary Movie parodies.

New watch for me, and all I knew about this one was that it was slated/hailed as the British Suspiria knock-off. Well, it wasn't that, but it was quite obvious that the director was going for an Argento-styled giallo, evident by the use of primary coloured lighting, and

Felt like a bit of an old classic last night, so I reached for Bava's last. (rewatch)

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon....NCcoL._RI_.jpg

Shock
Mario Bava
(1977)

Dora (Daria Nicolodi), her young son (David Colin Jr.) and new husband move back into the house in which she had lived when her first husband killed himself, before she was due to give birth. It is soon revealed that she's still quite ****ed up by her first husband's suicide, and weird, creepy **** starts happening almost immediately. How her son's behaviour starts turning is disconcerting to say the least. He's also a highly annoying little ****, but that's beside the point. So wrong.

While not Bava's best, it's decent fare. It's light on gore, but the classic giallo elements are all there. Close ups on hands with knives, or just creepy hands in general, eyes of terror close-ups, red herrings, mystery...it's all there. Daria Nicolodi is my horror QUEEN and she was amazing in this! <3

A Classic Revisited
https://image.ibb.co/j8Ey3y/fr13_img.jpg

Friday the 13th (1980)

An opening flashback to a summer camp scene sets the air for the story to follow. Two camp counselors slyly sneak away from the crowd serenading camp music to get hot and heavy in an attic loft, and they are met by an off-screen attacker. Next we fast-forward twenty years to a backpacker girl named Annie who is set to be the camp cook. Annie catches a ride with a truckdriver in town, he tells her, "Two kids were murdered in '58. Lloyd Browning in '57. Bunch of fires. Nobody knows who did any of it. 1962 they were gonna open up, the water was bad." Hey, wasn't that the road for Camp Crystal Lake back there?

After several rewatches, along with enjoying more of the Jason Voorhees films, it's pretty easy I feel to miss all the elements at play together in Friday the 13th (1980) without a more full grasp on the series. How it is a successful debut of one of the strongest horror franchises, and also unique compared to its rivals from the time period in the slasher subgenre. In contrast to the other big series, the first film sets up a mystery killer as well as a camp mythology backstory in which one by one the brash campers ignore the locals' warnings. Beware of strip monopoly and weird old guys riding bicycles, a perhaps hidden yet simple and stinging observation on human nature is at the center of it all. As time advances, for me, these Friday the 13th films gain more and more value.

Oh this place. They should never have opened this place again, there's been too much trouble here! Did you know that a young boy drowned? The year before those two others were killed. The counselors weren't paying any attention, THEY were making love while that young boy drowned! He should have been watched! Every minute! .... Oh I couldn't let them open this place again, could I? Not after what happened. YOU let him drown! You never paid any attention! Look what you did to him. LOOK WHAT YOU DID TO HIM!

The set-up the first takes you through, though. It's one of the ones that's stayed with me the longest, and still works.

I remember the first time I rewatched it. Having been through it before, I didn't think I'd feel creeped out at all. So I took it with me to watch at a friend's parents' place while they were away. She didn't want to be alone, so being the good friend that I am, I brought some scary movies in my bag and went to keep her company.

30 min into Part I she starts hearing noises and wondering if we're locked in. But she's too scared to go check as everything's dark by then. Helpfully, I volunteer.

Oh my god. That was one scary perimeter-check walk. The vibe of Part I did its job, I was legit nervous.

I haven't had to check any property boundaries during subsequent rewatches, but I'm pretty sure it'll feel the same. No other horror film has done that to me.

With Friday the 13th's captivating sound and setting, that I can also believe.

The first time I watched, was in a previous house I used to live in on a lake. That was the time I wrote about briefly earlier in this thread where I mentioned I walked out to my workshed to grab an axe while watching, never know when Pam Voorhees might pop out! The house I lived in on the lake, that location could've fit right into one of these films!

Haven't watched it in a while but i've always found the first Friday The 13th boring, never disliked it really just never got into it. Guess that's due to seeing it so late, i was in my 20's and had already seen all the Freddies, Myers, Screams, etc. Plus i knew what happens, had even seen the great last scene on some Channel 4 Top 100 Horror's Show before i actually saw the film.

I'm planning on watching Part 3 soon. Only watched: 1, 2, 4, 6, Takes Manhattan, Freddy Vs Jason, and "all the good bits" of Jason X according to my friend who showed me various scenes from it when we were kids.

On my first impression I wasn't all that into the first film either. As of the start of this year though, when I bought the DVDs of 1-4, 7-8, and the Crystal Lake Memories Documentary, they're some of the favorite films I own. As I've briefly mentioned before, I also am fond of tracking the box office success these kinds of movies achieved in the 70s and 80s.

The Halloween franchise produced five films in the 70s and 80s.
They averaged a budget of $3,060,000,
and earned an average of $23,168,000 at the box office.
Multiplying their budget about 7.6 times at the ticket box on avg.

The Elm Street series produced five films in the 80s.
They averaged a budget of $4,460,000,
and earned an average of $34,333,000 at the ticket box.
Multiplying their budget around 7.7 times on avg at the box office.

Friday the 13th produced eight films in the 80s.
They averaged a budget of $2,462,000,
and earned an average of $28,247,000 in theaters.
Multiplying their budget 11.5 times in ticket sales.

So Friday the 13th produced more films, spending less money per film on average, while earning a better return on investment than their competition financially. Some of it had to do with that first film I think, they set it up different than Halloween and Elm Street. Elm Street spent the most per film, but also made the most, while Friday spent the least and made the best return on investment. It tapped into something in our moviewatching psyche. Also, Friday the 13th (1980) made the most of any of these movies in the 70s and 80s (over $59 Million)

Will enjoy reading your take on 3, for me as fun a viewing as any. The two parts I have left- I've seen just the first half of Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning, and haven't gotten to Part 9.

It's never been about the ending for me. For me, it's about everythng right up until Mrs Voorhees reveals herself. It has a voyeuristic, stalking feel to it which is unsettling.

Part III is getting some love from me this weekend. I think I mentioned either here in thread, or to someone privately, that summer's slasher time for me. So we'll see if I wail about Part IIIIbeing, in fact, the best one by Sunday night.

Maniac
William Lustig
1980

Yep. Again I rewatched another old classic I love so ****ing much and omg I LOVE THIS SO ****ING MUCH. This twisted little gem tells the story of a disturbingly unwell man who embarks on a scalping spree to maintain his mannequin collection. Things get a bit complicated when he engages in a sort of friendship with a beautiful photographer.

Joe Spinell is fantastic as Frank Zito, maniac of the title. He really gets in there, and it's unsettling. Gets a bit out of hand towards the end, and there's even a laughable few seconds where he rolls against a wall slowly, but it's well worth the ride. He does unhinged well, as ultimately, one feels some sort of sympathy for the character.

The film has a gritty, grimy, uncomfortable feel to it, and the soundtrack by Jay Chattaway is great! Really adds to the mood. Its very violent and gory with plenty of good kills, but I just have to hold my heart for a second and give a special shoutout of love to the scene in which (do not click until after you've seen the film, @nostromo87 !)

WARNING: spoilers below
Tom Savini's head explodes. It is a thing of revolting beauty that is easily right up there in my top 5 exploding head scenes of all time.

*sigh*

Did I already tell you I love this movie? You might hate it though.

Maniac is awesome, might be my favourite slasher. The remake is solid too, really didn't expect that. Obviously Elijah is no Spinelli especially in that sort of role but i think it works well as its own thing.

SAME <3

I was impressed with the remake but need to see it again to see if I feel the same way, as I went into it expecting crap. Especially as it was pitched to me like "Maniac remake starting the hobbit".

I was quite blown away by him.

So yeah, need to see if it holds up, because it sure felt like a respectful remake. And the original holds up even after many rewatches, years apart.

Maniac is one of the few slashers I actually like. It's gritty and disturbed in a good way. Remake was, in my opinion, really bad - I hated the 1st person gimmickry.

Think if i saw it as a kid Spinelli would have genuinely scared me, so unhinged.

Do you guys know of any Japanese slashers? I watched Evil Dead Trap which is kind of a slasher, but way weirder and a lot of other things too. It's good, but I am wondering if there are any semi-traditional J-slashers out there.

Final Destination (2000)

A class of 40 students and 4 teachers from Mount Abraham High School are set to take flight from New York to Paris for their class trip, but student Alex Browning has disruptive premonitions of the plane exploding in midair. This gets he and five of his classmates kicked off the flight, including Clear Rivers (Ali Larter), Stifler, and one teacher to stay behind with them. Carter Horton and his girlfriend Terry are left behind too, as Alex and Carter have a long-running hostile rivalry. To the alarm of those left behind, Alex's intuition proves true, and no travelers who remained on the flight survived. I probably wouldn't say this is exactly a slasher film, yet fate begins a terror hunt to track down Alex and the survivors. So the killer in this instance is... death? This is where my curiosity took me, so I followed it. An unusual relationship and incomprehensible attraction develops between Alex and Clear, they had never spoken to each other before, yet after seeing Alex's freakout on the plane, she admits, "I didn't see what you saw, but I felt it." Alex gets really caught up in figuring out fate's design, wanting to discover its patterns, but he suspects there's a risk to cheating the plan. In a way, utter bunk, a cool cast though and a fun viewing. Plus it reminded me of several of my MoFo BANNED deaths.

You're Next (2011)

Crispian Davison and his girlfriend Erin reach a new vacation home in Missouri to celebrate Crispian's parent's Wedding Anniversary. It's a pretty unique opening for a slasher film, because the family hasn't been together in years, plus some of the old sibling rivalries flare up. The Davison family is pretty loaded, as Crispian's dad formerly worked for the KGB. Once everyone shows up and the family sits down to dinner together, the reunion turns swiftly into a disaster home invasion slaughter. Assailants wearing animal masks descend upon the wooded area wielding all manner of weapons such as crossbows, axes, and machetes. All the Davisons and their visitors freeze up and panic, except for Crispian's girlfriend, Erin. It turns out she grew up in a survivalist compound. Erin is played by Sharni Vinson, who fits right into any list about kickass movie dames for her performance here, I'd say. A throwback flick to older and simpler horror films, with an emphasis more on intense savageness, where the attackers run smack into role-reversal manifest by Erin as the saving grace.

The Initiation (1984)

Kelly Fairchild, played by Daphne Zuniga, (Princess Vespa from Spaceballs) enters pledge week with the Delta Rho Chi sorority along with her pledge sisters Beth, Marsha, and Alison. Meanwhile Kelly has a recurring nightmare she's had since she was a kid involving her mom, stepdad, and a strange man appearing at their house. That prompts her to choose dreams as the topic for her Psych term paper. At the same time, back at pledge week with the sorority, the pledge sisters have weekly work assignments, a Frat party on Friday, and prank night on Saturday. Megan, one of the older sisters, dares them to break into and steal the security officer's clothes at the Fairchilds Department Store, owned by Kelly's stepdad (Clu Gulager, from Return of the Living Dead). This was meant to be a film to send Daphne Zuniga to movie stardom, I think, but it was overshadowed by another certain slasher film about dreams released one month earlier by Wes Craven. The first half of this movie was actually really enjoyable and I thought I'd rate it higher, then the second half got pretty cheesy but fun enough. Pledges Kelly, Beth, Marsha, and Alison, do you hereby swear that in this last week of your pledge period you will complete your sacred duties to the best of your ability, that you will obey your older and wiser sisters, and that you will do anything they ask, no matter what the consequences, so help you God? I swear.

The first time i saw Final Destination was the night before i went on a plane. My brother in law had us watch it specifically to freak us out the sadist haha. Luckily i never had a problem with flying but it really traumatized my sister  Happy to report it didn't crash

Haven't seen it in years i did like it then, also liked the 3rd one but all i remember about that now is the rollercoaster and sunbed scenes.

I've come across it and considered watching Maniac several times. I actually don't think I'm capable of really hating one of these movies. Even Prom Night and The House On Sorority Row, which I rated poorly, I still kind of liked watching them. I think I might enjoy The House On Sorority Row a bit more now, for some reason, but haven't given it another chance yet.

A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984)

I'm so glad you guys could come over tonight. No problem, Tina. Nancy and Glen to the rescue. Hello, Mom? Yea... Out here at Barry's. Huh? Yea, noisy as usual. Glad we don't live here, huh? Yea, Aunt Nuñez says hello... See, I told you you'd be feeling better! ... All day long I've been seeing that guy's weird face. Well he scraped his fingernails along things. Actually they were more like fingerknives or something, something he'd made himself.... But they made a horrible sound. ScreeeEEEEeeecchhh!!! Rod Lane brings Lantz down just three yards from the goal-line, what a brilliant tackle, and the fans go wild!

As the Golden Age of 1978-1983 slashers began to slacken, Wes Craven recognized his time was running out. Slasher movies and their theatrical success, they were dying. Developing the story since 1981, and after being ignored by countless studios, Craven paired with New Line Cinema, a pretty irrelevant film studio at the time whose best hits included cult films such as Pink Flamingos (1972) and Reefer Madness (1973), which would come to be known as "The House That Freddy Built." A Nightmare On Elm Street sold over 7 Million tickets in North America on a budget of just $1.8 Million, and growing into one of the most successful and loved series of films in history. The film both turned New Line Cinema from an insignificant film company into a major Hollywood Box Office competitor, and kept slasher films alive- a triumph Craven would repeat twelve years later with Scream (1996).

The story opened in the Midwestern town of Springwood, Ohio, with a glove, and spotlighted teenagers Tina Gray, Rod Lane, Nancy Thompson, and her boyfriend Glen Lantz who share a common dream...
One, Two, Witch Nostro's Coming For You
Three, Four, Better Rock Your Score
Five, Six, Light Your Candlesticks
Seven, Eight, Gonna Stay Up Late
Nine, Ten, Gonna Win Again
The friends have a sleepover to comfort Tina, until a relentless fella in a dirty red and green sweater tears up Tina and Rod's bedroom. There is nothing I dislike about it- the music, the characters, the story, I can recall the first time I watched it five years ago in a house by the lake on my TV in an unfinished basement that reminded me of the opening fingerknives glovemaking scene. Showing that slasher movie magic never has to die.

An instant theatrical success which launched a terrific series of movies to hang out and party with. Donald Thompson and his boozing ex-wife Marge, the parents of Nancy who chose to end Krueger's life years ago, face the dream-haunt revenge of the razor-fingered clawed slasher Freddy. You face things. That's your nature, that's your gift. Okay Krueger, we play in your court. And now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep, and if I die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take. What if they meet a monster in their dreams, then what? Turn their back on it, take away its energy and it disappears. But what happens if they don't do that? Well then I guess those people don't wake up to tell what happens.

I agree on almost every ratings you put on each movies except maybe for the Halloween remake of Rob Zombie which is in my opinion a decent movie at best and the original of John Carpenter is probably in my top 20 best movie of all time.

I've seen the movie Terrifier last week I dig the crap out of this movie. The clown was scary as sh*t and it's all-around gory fun. Keep em' coming Nostro' I dig that thread and of course I'm a slasher fan

I can't hate them either, although my rating is a bit more of an emotional response than your more sensible approach.

Maniac is just one of the ones I fan hard over. It just never loses its bite no matter when I watch it. Secretly, I rate it a bit higher than I do. It would be perfect but for a bit of melodrama in the aforementioned wall-rolling scene, but even that had its charm.

Can't believe I just used the word "charm" to describe anything about this movie

Well, I also don't do writeups, but I'm doing little ones for you. Things might be looking up for a list!

But will think and rewatch a few things first to see if I still feel that way about them, so it may take some time. But you'll get the writeups. :)

Also, I won't be including giallos on my list. That's muddying the placing waters for me.

I loved Terrifier.

I don't hate Zombie's Halloween, but I really didn't like the backstory. Sucked the scary right out of Michael Myers. Otherwise, I kind of enjoy it, but that's got a bit to do with my just enjoying Rob Zombie in general.

Camo 05-18-18 06:13 AM

My Top Ten Slashers would probably be:

01. Deep Red
02. Halloween
03. Maniac (1980)
04. Nightmare On Elm Street
05. Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
06. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre
07. Scream
08. The New York Ripper
09. A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors
10. Silent Night Deadly Night

Keeping in mind that i've not seen anywhere near as many slashers as you guys, also i'm not even sure if all of those count.

Edit: Damn just realized Pyscho and Peeping Tom on Nostromo's list, they'd be there. Just consider those like my favourite Post-Black Christmas ones or something haha.

Last night I felt like being motion-and-speechless under the covers, so put on Part III. At first there was a bit of confusion as I could have sworn I just saw it, but I knew I really hadn't. And yet, I JUST SAW THAT BEGINNING!!! And not even because it was the end of Part II again!!! AGSDHJAGSH!!!AND THE OPENING TITLES LIKE...WHOAH 3D!!!! So I put on Part IV, and instantly knew that's not where I was in the marathon!!! What marathon? :affleck:

OH MY GOD, A TRUE MYSTERY OF THE UNEXPLAINED!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not really. I'd just started watching it 2 or 3 weeks ago and fell asleep. Then forgot I'd started it. *********. Jason gets me all flustered.

So after all that excitement, I relaxed back into Part III. From the beginning.

Friday the 13th Part III
Steve Miner
1982

Jason goes to the farm.

First, let me say that I'm annoyed I've never seen this in 3D. I don't care how bad the effect may be, I just feel cheated that I never got to see all those obvious 3D cues obnoxiously in my face. Also, lady getting poked by Jason. In 3D. So. Cheated. :bawling: AND THERE WAS AN EYE POPPING OUT! in 3D.

I know I say this about each part, but this one probably rivals the first for attention as my ultimate fav, even though neither has my favourite Jason kill. It DOES, however, have the superbly efficient and smooth kill (that I didn't get to experience in 3D, in case I hadn't mentioned it) he delivered right after putting on his mask for the first time!!!<3 <3 <3 , and then just dropping the spear gun casually and sauntering off, like...*mic drop*

Sadly, there's not as much swaying ass in Part III, but pretty sure I saw half a man butt. That'll do nicely! Some classic kills featured in this movie, my fav being either the aforementioned, or the
WARNING: spoilers below
expert upside down halving of the owner of said man butt. Only just struck me now that it's ironic he got halved.

This is the only film in the franchise where I feel bummed out by Jason's "death" in the end. I don't like seeing him covered with a sheet, like a regular dead guy. He's special.

https://45.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_l...r8nao1_500.gif
https://scrublife.files.wordpress.co...art3reveal.gif

Oh hai, Jason!

Technically, I can have both this and the first as my favs as the first wasn't a Jason movie, whereas this one is. This one blatantly ties in with the first at the end in what can be seen as a "rip off" ending, but I prefer to see it as a neat cycle.

++ or even a
depending on when you ask me.

Nostromo87 05-18-18 05:02 PM

That and Part 7 are the Jason films I enjoy best. In Part 3, I really liked what they did with the characters. Where each one has more well-established character traits. Great ending too between Chrissie and Jason. Let the slasher party roll! All of this reminds me of some of the summer camps I went to growing up, really fun times
