Re: The MoFo Top 100 of the Seventies

Gideon is notorious for not interacting with the forums or its members, so unless a PM was sent I wouldn't expect a list being sent. Also, I'm not sure but I have a hunch Gideon is a female or at least a female impersonator, just as I'm a male impersonator. The Gideon user name comes from the Roy Scheider character in All That Jazz, and he/she really likes musicals and romantic comedies, which I also like, at least the good ones. :)

I know that Gideon posted a ton of reviews at IMDb, but I don't recall what the user name was there. So, no Sexy methinks.

Miss Vicky 07-15-14 07:56 PM

Re: The MoFo Top 100 of the Seventies

I don't think Sexy would ever create an alter-ego that actually talks about movies and doesn't ever really interact with other MoFos. His own ego would never allow it and there wouldn't be any point to it anyway.

Camo 07-15-14 07:56 PM

He's definitely not SC. That would be the most pointless alter ego ever even more than Database Errol :p

Gideon interacts with the forum, just on a delayed response of about 10 years usually :)

I'm everybody here. This site is a big M. Night Shyamalan movie. At the end, the camera pulls back to reveal a massively schizophrenic woman (played by Roseanne Barr) and her thousands of multiple personalities, all being played out on a web forum. The year is 2744 and the Internet has evolved. The world has changed. This is the Twitter of the future. Celebrities have become super crazy. Much more than they are now. They've become bored with talking about themselves, so they made up thousands of other pretend people to speak for. It's like a darker, even scarier, even sadder story than Her.

OK, officially on the spreadsheet, we are up to 90 MoFos, and they should all be accounted for on the second page of this thread. I just got Yasashii and Daniel M's lists, which will make 92, but I haven't entered them, yet. I'll send you guys the notification message after I do that.

I'm still at the office. Driving home, so there will be a gap for a while before I return online.

I expect to have a bunch more ballots.

Thanks, everybody.

There's no real answer to that. Especially given that your definition of "junk" doesn't exactly fit with that of other people.

Case in point:

http://www.angelfire.com/music6/walt...cs/Cries12.jpg

Though of course everybody's definition of those terms varies to some degree.

Re: The MoFo Top 100 of the Seventies

I think it's a bit wrong to call something you've never heard of "junk." I think they're more like "opportunities for exploration." Which is not to say that they won't ultimately be something you hate, just that they shouldn't be dismissed simply because they are foreign to you.

Asian cinema was in crisis during the 1970's: Japanese cinema was in a depression with the lowest number of movies made and lowest studio revenues during that decade (because TV destroyed film ticket sales). While the cinema of China, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, etc, was still rather embryonic.

I would expect a ton of Japanese movies in the 1950's and 1960's countdowns though.

In the 1970's the most critically aclaimed Japanese film was Battles Without Honor and Humanity (1973) about the Yakuza:

Yeah but ATG was producing some serious cinema at the time, with an assist from Toho. Great decade for Japanese cinema.

You can always find great movies in every decade of Japanese cinema from the 1930's onwards but the economic size of the film industry was at it's lowest point in the 1970's in Japan over the last 60 years. Hence less talent and thus less great stuff produced over the decade compared to the other decades.

Normally I do not do "lists" it is usually too tough for me and then I re-think it and get mad for not having a certain film on there. This list was fun however and even though I am re-thinking a little already it brought up some good memories of growing up and made me want to watch some movies that I have not seen in a very long time.

Until then, here is the traditional list of films that received exactly one point, and one point only. Sixteen movies that were somebody's number twenty-five choice...and that was it. Let's end the suspense for those folks right now.

The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz
The Concert for Bangladesh
The Crazies
Diamonds Are Forever
Every Which Way But Loose
Farewell, My Lovely
Fat City
The Fury
Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo
La Grande Bouffe
The Lords of Flatbush
Love at First Bite
Meatballs
Robin & Marian
Summer City
