    I'd say watch A Summer at Grandpa's, A Time to Live and The Puppetmaster before A City of Sadness. Dust in the Wind and The Boys from Fengkuei are worth checking out as well. Hou is one of my favourite directors. If you're a fan of him, you should also check out Olivier Assaya's documentary, HHH: A Portrait of Hou Hsiao Hsien (1997).
