Candy has a more typical family, a mother and a father that love her dearly, but Candy's mother is a nightmare -- she picks on Candy about everything, she screams and rants and gives disgusted looks at Dan.

I'm starting to think that there's a fundamental weakness to movies where the conflict is completely dependent on a character's debilitating drug addiction, especially if the drug in question ends up being heroin.

Geoffrey Rush does a small but flashy turn as Dan and Candy's friend/dealer/enabler, whose willingness to help Dan and Candy feed their addiction seems to be stemmed in his sexual attraction to Dan.
