The film is very slow and the plot progresses with great patience, which does seem to be rewarding in places, but the bleak and static approach of the writing and direction does tend to bore or at least feel bland from time to time and the lack of music or background noise throughout most of the fil....

What I thought was interesting is how this Japanese film from 1967 seemed to take it's cues from late 1950s American melodrama films.

*BTW, Samurai Rebellion has recently been released on R1 DVD by the Criterion Collection, available individually or in the "Rebel Samurai: Sixties Swordplay Classics" boxed set with Sword of the Beast (1965 - Hideo Gosha), Samurai Spy (1965 - Masahiro Shinoda) and Kill.
