Instead the only buttons being hit were when I'd actually started playing games on my phone instead of watching the movie.

You can tell that Ronald Emmerich knows how to direct disaster movies; the action scenes with the natural disasters are intense and exciting, providing a few memorable moments in a movie full of forgettable scenes.
