Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger's charm and audacity endear him to much of America's downtrodden public, but he's also a thorn in the side of J. Edgar Hoover and the fledgling FBI. Desperate to capture the elusive outlaw, Hoover makes Dillinger his first Public Enemy Number One and assigns his top agent, Melvin Purvis, the task of bringing him in dead or alive.

All the players are set to go with Public Enemies , but this movie fails to deliver on it's premise - with poor technical qualities failing to bring an already boring script to life.

I personally loved it, but I’m not sure if it’s one of those films that I can go back to re-watch it over-and-over again..

produced version from the early 1970s directed by John Milius (on less than the craft services budget Mann had to play with) starring the great Warren Oates as Dillinger and Ben Johnson as Purvis pursuing him remains the best cinematic version of the tale to date.
