History of the World has some bits that I've seen before, especially in a Mel Brooks film in which a lot of the comedy is literal (big ending, streets crawling with soldiers), yet I found myself surprised by a lot of it and I genuinely enjoyed myself.

The comedic writing in this movie is utterly genius. All the dialogue is pretty much hit-or-miss (as with most Brooks films) but in this one there are a lot of hits..
