View Full Version : OG-'s Firefox Thread

So as anyone who has read a couple of the browser threads on here has found out, I am a staunch supporter of Firefox. I think it is a fantastic browser and that everyone should use it, but that's just me. Anyways, I thought I'd put up some little tidbits that I think will make your alliance in the browser wars that much easier. However, do note that these are just my personal preferences, but I've had a few people ask me about them so I thought I'd put up a guide of sorts.

First, if you don't have Firefox (and want to use it) just head on over to www.getfirefox.com, there is a link for the download of the latest version in the top right corner.

Next up, the tweaks that I use:
1. Enter in "about:config" into the address bar.
2. Navigate to browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs and double click on it so it = true
3. Navigate to network.http.pipelining and double click on it so it = true
4. Navigate to network.http.pipelining.maxrequests double click on it and change it from 4 to 100
5. Navigate to network.dns.disableIPv6 double click on it so it = true

I can't exactly explain what all of these things do, but they alter the way in which Firefox loads a page in such a way that it loads everything faster. It may not seem as such initially, as it looks like the site hesitates before it loads, but then it should load everthing else simultaneously.

But my favorite Firefox tweaks, the extensions:

BugMeNot (http://roachfiend.com/archives/2005/02/07/bugmenot/)
BugMeNot is an extension that will allow you, if you so choose, to bypass registration for hundreds and hundreds of sites that require registration before viewing. Simply install the extension (instructions are on the site) and right click in the login section of said website, BugMeNot will search its database for a login that has been submitted by a user for this very purpose. Simple as that.

ForecastFox (http://forecastfox.mozdev.org/installation.html)
Possibly my favorite extension. Install it, set it up (fairly simple, just input your cities code from the list it provides) and imbeded in your browser, at a location of your choosing, will be the current weather conditions around you and for the next three days. I personally like this placed in the right of the status-bar:

http://www.basement-films.net/images/forecastfox.jpg

There are some more things you can customize for it as well. I personally have the Alert Slider turned off (I found it kind of annoying). Great little extension.

Add Blocker (http://adblock.mozdev.org/installation.html):

Does exactly what you would expect it to. I actually have this disabled right now, as a majority of the sites I visit are smaller, personal sites (such as MoFo) that do bank on ads and I think they deserve it, but it can alway sbe turned back on with the click of a button. If you install it, you should also import this list of ads:

1. Save this (http://www.geocities.com/pierceive/adblock/2005-02-22a.txt) to your computer as a .txt file
2. Import it into AdBlock by going into your AdBlock preferences, then AdBlock options and import filter.

Do that and you'll never see an ad again, unless you disable Adblock.

That's it for now. :)

Show off...

strong supporter of IE here...

actually, just kidding. IE works fine for me. Never had a problem with it, but I might consider this Firefox, but since I share a computer with other family members, well, they might not want to adapt...

P.S. Thanks for making this thread dedicated to my question, Pete.

Firefox is the best browser I've ever used, hands down.

MovieMaker, if you want your family to convert, get this extension:

IEview (http://ieview.mozdev.org/installation.html)

Right click in the background or an any link and you can choose to view it in internet explorer. Handy for developers or if a site isn't too firefox friendly (as some, but few, can be).

OG-, if you click on a track on THIS (http://www1.hmv.co.uk/hmvweb/displayProductDetails.do?ctx=280;-1;-1;-1&sku=180490) page. Can you hear a short sample of the song. I can't, but I could when I was on IE. Do you know what the problem is?

Nope, Firefox doesn't play imbeded background sounds. I'm not entirely sure why :-\

I dig it overall, but don't like some of its rendering. IE is far better at displaying pages as developers intended them to be displayed, for the most part, which offsets the admittedly cool expansions available for FireFox.

I thought this thread was going to be about Clint Eastwood. Der.

With my router and it's amazing firewall, the latest up-dates with XP making pop-ups a thing of the past, Spyware for the insidious adware crap out there, and newsgroups for porn...why would I want to change?

OG-

Much more flexibilty and customization?
Support of the smaller guy over the corporation?

I totally agree that firefox is the far superior browser out there. I got hooked when I site I use to visit had posted a hyper link to it a year ago and I have never looked back.

Easy and fast way to tune up Firefox. I already had mine largely tuned up, but even still this made a noticeable difference.

Not a whole lot that is new here and I haven't looked into it, but the Firetune link posted above may make all these changes, but either way it's a very organized tutorial on how to get the best out of Firefox.

I reformated today and felt like trying out one of the custom builds of Firefox I had been hearing about. It's Firefox, just tweaked to hell by someone who knows what they're doing. Right now I'm running Stipe's build (http://pryan.org/firefox/stipe/blog/) and really like it. At first I was a little dissapointed by it. I knew that it was supposed to give a solid speed increase, but it hangs a bit before loading new pages, though once they load they load almost instantly. I was going to switch back to the Mozilla build and tweak it, but after 10-15 minutes I go used to this custom build.

It's completely compatible with all your current settings etc, it just loads things differently. Here is a direct link for the download (http://pryan.org/firefox/stipe/firefox-103-s8v9.exe), I'd advise backing up your old Firefox folder before copying this new one in, just in case you're dissapointed by it.

Like I said, I initially hated it, but I gave it some testing time and now it gets my recommendation.

Does anybody use del.icio.us(http://del.icio.us), the social bookmarks manager? If so, I highly recommend the extension 'Foxylicious'(http://dietrich.ganx4.com/foxylicious), which syncs your del.icio.us bookmarks into your Firefox bookmarks. It's a great integration.

I like Firefox for thiese situations....

*type type type*
"Oh, crap, how do you spell that word that I'm trying to think of? DANG!"

*Ctrl+Tab*

*www.dictionary.com - type my confusing word*
"Oh, it's the I before the E except when after the C"

It's all about mutiple tabs in your browser.

the multiple tabs are ok, but sometimes you might loose a page if you close a window.

I downloaded Firefox yesterday and have been looking around. Pretty cool. Seems to interface a little more smoothly than Opera did with some sites.

One thing: I can't seem to copy and paste into a different window. It says I have to enable that function, but I can't find any place to do that. Anyone have any ideas?

Copy and paste text from one Firefox window into another? Weird... I've used several versions of Firefox and am now actually running a guy's custom build of it and have never run into a problem like that nor do I ever recall having to enable such a function...And I'm pretty nerdy, so I'd remember something like that. Don't know what to say.. :-\

I use it now that I have broadband, but before when I head dial-up I had some problems after a while. At first it worked great, but eventually pages kept timing out (all the time), and I kept getting cut off.

I know I'm not the only one, so maybe I was just one of the unlucky ones or this browser really isn't dial-up friendly.

But like I say, I'm using it now and I can't imagine going back to Internet Explorer.
