wow, did you see this? fatboy slim lost to christina aguilera? 'n sync winning anything? the biggest load of crap was the best rock video category where the great mighty weezer lost to fred durst's whining. how did limp bizkit even get nominated? since when is THAT rock? i think it's an insult to aerosmith that they had to watch that dork win over them in the rock category. a couple cool things: spike jonze won for best direction on weapon of choice. spike jonze rules, he's the best music video director out there, although i like marcos siega, also. and apparently, eminem's loser as* got snubbed. alright! any opinions?
Don't rip on N'Sync -- I think they've got some good music...as long as it's not one of those awful ballads. Those are almost always horrible. Anyway, I happen to like a few Limp Bizkit songs...I think they put some good songs together. Rollin is a great song. Anyway, I think MTV sucks for having two award shows now...there's one every 6 months...and it seems like they're even closer, because they re-play the CRAP out of each of them.
You'd think that the Music Television Channel would skip those re-plays and play...well, I dunno...some more MUSIC VIDEOS!

it's ok you dig all this modern, trendy stuff, but for those of us who are hardcore rock fans, no amount of 'n sync or rap music posing as rock is going to make up for the fact that mtv stopped playing decent music years ago. i remember when i was younger, you could see green day, offspring, soundgarden, pearl jam, weezer, all these great bands (remember guitars?) and now it's just trash. i do agree with what you said about less glitter and more substance, though. mtv doesn't do music videos anymore, and it's doing them a great disservice. their channel could be so much more, but it's all just corporate chart-climbers who are trying to cash in on the next big thing. don't get me wrong, i like a HUGE variety of stuff, but nothing even remotely interesting is represented on mtv. i said it before and i'll say it again: let's all just thank god eminem didn't win a thousand awards again like last year.

I don't have MTV so I really shouldn't be even replying to this thread, but I thought I would just mention that so that my number would go up...:D
Yes they did suck, but they almost always suck. It was awesome when Michael Jackson came out at the end of the N'Sync performance though!!!
The biggest rob of the show was that Incubus lost to N'Sync for best group video. Drive is one of the best videos I have ever seen!!

I used to think that way too,why would any good bands want to even go to these stupid award ceremonies, when all it is ,is a popularity contest between whatever trends of the week. Then,at this years Super Bowl back in January, the half time show featured Briteny Spears, nsync, and guess who...Areosmith!They wre all on stage doing a cover of Areosmith and Run DMC's,Walk This Way!It was awful!I seriously lost so much respect for Areosmith. It was so gross to see Britney Spears in her Slut-Wear prancin' around with those nsync idiots(you don't even want to know what they had on...looked like someone barfed up some spray paint and glitter)murdering a classic Like Walk This Way...a devestation to rock fans every where.

oh, yeah, i hear that. those pop acts are just there for show, everytime. remember britney's butchering of the stones? that was terrible.
Well I personally don't like Aerosmith. I mean what is so great about them that everyone loves them??? Where do they excell past other bands??
My friend came up with the best analogy ever about Britney Spears today. He was talking about how she isn't really sexy...Here's how it went:
Britney Spears is like a cheap scary movie. One of those movies where they make you jump, but after a minute you've already forgoten why you jumped, because it was such a simple thing that made you jump. Britney is like those cheap scares. Everyone thinks shes sexy just because they've had this reaction to her, but she doesn't really do anything to be sexy.
Well the way he said it made alot more sense, but I thought it was really funny and a great analogy.
OG--what you said almost did make sense!
I think Britney is sexy while I'm watching one of her videos but I forget about her as soon as I'm doing something else. She never comes to mind when somebody asks me who's on my TOP 50 List!
The Super Bowl show was okay. N'Sync was HORRIBLE live...but Aerosmith was awesome...Nelly was pretty good, too. Did Anyone else notice that Britney had a SOCK on her hand? Crap, could that have been any dumber?
Oh, and I really dislike Incubus for some reason. They're okay and all, but they bug me. You can't use "spontaneous combustion" smoothly in a song...it just won't happen. :D Anyway, "Pop" was far and away the best video...best song is another story, but that video was great...colorful, cool camera effects, and a great set.
I didn't watch it, so I missed MJ...but I heard a bit about it. I am SO gonna try to see it when it plays twice tomorrow...MJ is awesome, and It seems like he's got a new look. Did her perform, Peter/everyone else? If so, what song? "You Rock My World" by any chance?
Nope, hate to dissapoint you, but he just danced. It was still the best part of the show though.

Millions of girls in the 80's liked to look at him.
Look at the backstreet boys today...those guys are wackjobs. Look at what they do to their hair, and what they dress in.

This is a crude generalization. MTV plays some good music - it's unavoidable, because there IS lots of good music these days. But I do agree that they play some trash as well. It's unfair though, that you're saying things like "remember guitars?"
Don't dismiss Eminem. His talent is there. I think he looks like a jackass trying to explain why he insults gays etc, but his lyrical skills are incredible. The man can rhyme. I hate how he's trying to separate his own feelings from his music, but that has nothing to do with the fact that it's good. And don't say something like "he's talking about killing his wife, raping his mother, etc, that's not entertaining music", because Johnny Cash sang "I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die" and everyone thinks he's the greatest. Eminem has the ability to vent his own emotions through his music, something that is uncommon in hip hop today.
You like Offspring? Ugh. I must say though, I agree that Limp Bizkit eats it - their guitarist is good, but Fred Durst is the worst MC of all time. He should talk to Zack De La Rocha and take some notes.
Brodie, I'm confused - are you a hardcore rock fan who likes a variety of all genres of music, or just a variety of rock?
BrodieMan
09-09-01, 12:36 PM
steve-
both. but as a hardcore rock fan, i have to be disappointed with how rock music is represented on mtv. it's just not fair, it used to be way better.... what is represented on mtv is not even indicative of a wide variety of music but only what's on the charts right now, which is pretty lame.
oh, and for the record, the ramones appearing onstage was the coolest thing that happened at that weak show. the ramones rule you all. :D RIP-JOEY RAMONE
Watch MTV After Hours, its from like 1:00am to 6:00am. Thats when they play the good stuff. I've seen Tool on their alot, Primer 55, Rage, System of a Down, Snot, and I even once saw a Nonpoint video. So if you like hardcore rock or even just rock, watch it during those hours.
BrodieMan
09-09-01, 05:03 PM
that sounds awesome. that's actually probably when i should be watching it, but i don't know if i can stay up that late on a regular basis. i will give it a shot, though.
I use to have it on in the background during the summer when doing stuff with friends or was on my computer or something. They rarely ever play pop then. It will go in a cycle of like 2 rap songs then 2 metal songs then 2 something else, then it repeats with different videos.

I'm taking it everyone has seen the Pepsi commercial where Britney is in it. What the hell is she wearing. Is she trying to come up with her own fashion line here. I mean I can dig around in the garbage and wear some shag carpet to work and say look, it's the fashion now.
To me she was more sexy when she first came out, not the mickey mouse club, when her first song came out. Now, she's just trashy.

I am replying to some earlier qoutes on this subject:
N'SYNC Sucks big time. There is nothing wrong with Limp Bizkit they kick a**. Kepp Rollin Rollin Rollin. NE Ways just wanted to put in some input.
Yeah, I *HATE* the style that has people spending 4 hours so they can look like they just threw something on. I hate it when a member of N'Sync wears a pair of jeans that cost $300, but has patches and stitches all over it, as if they put it together themselves.
Wear normal clothes. Loose, comfortable jeans, some kind of shirt of something, and a jacket. You don't have to be revolutionary...and most people who try to wear revolutionary clothes are going to end up looking stupid anyway.

are you a micheal jackson fan by any chance? :D
by the way, there are dozens of reasons why i love the ramones, but their clothes were the greatest outfits worn by rock stars ever.
Yeah, I'm a huge MJ fan. :) I think some of his outfits were really, really stupid though. Sequins? Ugh. It's hard to imagine a situation where that would look good on a man.

Oh yeah -- I'm no big Ramones fan, but they're undeniably talented, and the outfits are so befitting a bubblegum-style rock band. None of this "paint yourself black and scream at the top of your lungs" nonsense. Good music...almost goofy, with a hint of rebellion. :)

I think rock stars dress so stupid. Those award shows are just a way for them to get some more attention, negitive or positive I don't think they care. The women might as well go naked, because they are barely wearing anything anyways...those horrible dresses with the open fronts...I don't know why they think that looks good.It looks like their dress is on backwards. The men are just as bad. They get dressed in the dark or something...it's all about attention. It just makes the good dressers that much more obvious, the ones with real taste stand out more than the ones who don't.

Tell me about it. Lil' Kim keeps on coming up with new ways to go nearly topless. It even happens at the Oscars, with that swan dress. Some people are just crazy.

Oh yeah...she just took the tune. I didn't like anything about the original except for the tune, though (odd lyrics...decent at best), so I guess she stole the right thing. :) To her credit, she's a decent singer on her own, but yeah, it's always sad to see someone take off because of someone else's hit really...although we have to keep in mind that they likely granted permission.

i still weep when i think about what p.diddy or whatever the hell his name is did to my precious "kashmir".... oh, god, that sucked. kashmir was pure genius. zeppelin are truly timeless and that puffy song was a blatant ripoff. what really bums me is that page actually condoned that song, but i guess he was just trying to be open-minded. and then he stole the police's every breath you take, also.

Hey Brodieman...Michael Jackson's fame has come from him being the all time greatest music performer of this millenium. I watched the 2001 VMAs and the best part was N'Sync w/MJ. When he came out after N'Sync's performance of their song "Pop", I was glued to the screen.
I am looking forward to the Michael Jackson Tribute on CBS this Fall. It'll be a blast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

what do you mean greatest performer of the millennium? that's totally subjective. there are people who think hendrix is the greatest performer of the millennium.... you state it as if it were fact.
Oh yeah...that was *AMAZING*. I mean, that Etch-A-Sketch was brilliant. With the silhouette and all...wow! The scream of his (from his performance with Janet) was perfect, too. It's just a shame he didn't rehearse more, because his dancing looked a bit off...I read that it was made up on the spot, so that might explain it.
It was a bit akward...although, obviously, it's better than what 99% of the people watching at home would have been able to do without planning something in advance. I'm listening to his new single now, BTW. Wow, it's amazing.
I am SO gonna buy his new album. I'm so glad that he got all those people together for his concert, too, which was filmed earlier today. Spears, Ricky Martin, Usher, N'Sync, Destiny's Child, and about 10 others that aren't quite as famous. You know why? These people were ALL influenced and inspired by MJ. Every single one of them. He's just barely old enough to have been the guy they listened to while growing up (not counting The Jackson 5...that's different).
Amazing performer...really, truly amazing.

No big deal. Threads go off-topic all the time. It's what makes this place so much fun. :) Anyway, I openly admit that MJ, physically, is bizarre, and may have some serious issues...but I don't care...I'm only talking about his music, which is fabulous.

sure jrs,I'd like to be a fly on the wall the night you and MJ,had a heart to heart about whether or not he molested anyone. He has a playground for kids at his pad, okay. That's creepy enough.I'm not gonna say he did,and no one should say he didn't cuz only he knows the answer to that one.As far as Brittany is concerned...she's dating a hormone laden nsyncfreak...I find it hard to believe they are maintaining a pure relationship here;like I said, her marketing team is incredible, they can convince people that a teenie with those kind of moves, that gone-crazy-body,and a steady boyfriend, is a virgin.Bill Clinton could have used some of her PR.
I doubt they spend much time together. I think she's fooling herself with this "expressing myself" bull, but I don't think she's lying about her virginity. She's said it very firmly, and I don't think she would lie that blatantly.

you guys are obviously underestimating how weird mj truly is. i know you're fans and that blinds you to the possiblity that mj could have molested anyone but usually there is some small piece of truth to any story like that. i doubt someone would just choose to sue michael jackson for no reason at all. and as for britney spears, i don't know how you could believe what she's saying. she doesn't strike me as being the paragon of virtue that she acts like she is. in fact, the only side of her we've ever seen makes her seem like a total c*ck tease. i just can't see her as having that much self-restraint. do you see how she dresses?
i doubt someone would just choose to sue michael jackson for no reason at all.
Money isn't a reason?
i just can't see her as having that much self-restraint. do you see how she dresses?
That's quite different. If you ask me, she does that to compensate, so to speak, for her virginity. It's not as if she said it briefly, or in an off-hand manner. Someone asked her straight up, and she answered FIRMLY without delay. I consider myself a fairly decent judge of character, and I don't think she's lying.
BrodieMan
09-12-01, 11:18 AM
ok, you mentioned money as the reason they sued michael jackson. here's what i think: if i'm a money-grubbing liar and swindler, why would i arbitrarily choose him? he's filthy freakin rich, but you could choose anyone. also, if you're going to sue someone, why in god's name would you bring your children into it? the people who claim mj molested their kids are not going to make that stuff up (it's way too serious, especially when kids are involved) just to get some cash. i trust people who are victimized over celebrities who are admittadly weird any day. again, i totally understand that you guys are fans, though. i have no problem with appreciating mj as an artist, but i think his friends, family, anyone can admit he needs some sort of help.
Well, first of all, please note that I didn't say I thought he was innocent. I haven't looked at much of the evidence, but I would, honestly, be a little bit surprised if he turned out to be innocent of all the charges. I just said I didn't care when it came to his music.
As for the money issue: with that logic, no one would ever sue anyone. Someone rich has to get sued...you can't say "what are the odds this one person would get sued?" because that would apply to any rich person.
Anyway, I do think MJ has serious problems. I also think he's brilliant in some ways. I do not think, however, that his problems are anywhere near the level at which they are portrayed. Most people seem to think he's a proven child molestor several times over with the odd desire to sculpt himself into a white person with a robotic nose.

With the money, I made a mistake with my wording. I didn't mean sue I meant bribe. There was the father of that one kid who originally wanted to make plans to make a movie (something in those lines) with MJ. When MJ said no after he previousy saying he would the father got angry and having his son accusing MJ.
MJ donates money to children, loves children (and everyone) he is a caring guy and I am not just saying this just cause I am a fan.
As for the sculpture.......remember the pepsi commercial??
I GUESS once he went into the hospital for surgery to have himself touched up and bandaged, he wanted to be perfect. He just likes to make things perfect like his music videos. He make look wierd now. I mean his looks goes back and forth from ok to wierd to fair to good to.... As his white looks , I don't think he dies himself. That's B.S.
