What a wonderful little movie! I will be thinking about this one for a little while.
If you like Civil War films, you should like this one. It's about a small troop of Union soldiers who come across a small Confederate farm in the backwoods of Kentucky, owned by a woman and her young son. The soldiers are in the progress of pilfering provisions for the Union when one of the men is seriously injured. They have to stay there until the man adequately recovers.
This movie is such an opposite from your typical Hollywood saccharin effort where everything is tidy and convenient and works out okay. This movie pulls no punches in examining the moral ambiguity of war, particularly the Civil war. And it brings it down to such a personal level. The second half of the film becomes increasingly poignant and tense.
I highly recommend this little known film from 1995, which is based on a true story, and starring Chris Cooper and Patricia Clarkson; and directed by Robby Henson. Look for an interesting, small role by Kris Kristofferson.
