View Full Version : New Thread Creation Rule

Yoda

I've just modified the board's functionality so that no one can post a new thread until they have 25 posts; the only forum exempt from this minimum is, of course, the Birthdays and Introductions (http://www.movieforums.com/community/forumdisplay.php?f=17) forum.

This is something I had hoped to avoid, but the tremendous influx of new users posting a) pre-existing threads or b) threads in the wrong forum has become more and more time-consuming, and is rather clearly getting in the way of the real discussions going on.

Just wanted to let you all know. If anyone has any suggested tweaks or changes at all related to this, feel free to let me know. I'm open to exploring this topic further.

Discussions going on?! Are there discussions going on?

Anyway, thanks Yoda! I think it helps!

So everybody, what's your favorite movie?

So everybody, what's your favorite movie?

I'd tell you if I could think of the name of it...

I saw it on June 23rd, 1973...it was a sunday at 4:58pm. It was about people in England, but I saw it in Japan, but it was subtitled in Italian and was about these people....interacting...

One guy had on a coat!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can anyone tell me what it was called?!?!!?!?!?!?11111111111

I really don't think it's a good idea Yoda.

Instead of getting one post of "do you remember this film that came out last year."

Now you will twenty-four other posts of "huh," "yes," "no," "when," "where," "how," along with the question about a film.

You guys my favorite movie had a girl and she was gettinh stabbed by a guy who then went on a stale outdated murderous rampage and killed all her friends and such then at the end the dude died in some generic way! I saw it with my girlfriend a long time ago and the movie was in color and I think it was filmed in colour! LOL

25, Electric Wizard...25! Please, remember when you were a newbie and all you had to do was post once to create a new thread?! 1,389 posts later and you're still uncertain of the horror movie you saw! Jeesh!!!

well i think it's a great idea...frankly i've had it with trying to figure out the titles of movies that noone seems to remember who is in it or what year it was made...then once you get them the title they seem to disappear and don't show up again...

Now you will twenty-four other posts of "huh," "yes," "no," "when," "where," "how," along with the question about a film.I considered that, but I think it's unlikely. I don't think many people will be willing to post 25 times, even if the posts are short, just to ask a question. If these people aren't willing to take the time to run a search, post the thread in the right forum, or even come back and say "thanks" once it's answered, then I doubt they'll be persistent enough to post a couple dozen times.

I guess we'll find out, though, eh?

This honestly wasn't about any one user, guys. Just a general trend that needed to be offset.

I'll be keeping an eye on things for the next few weeks; hopefully there won't be any negative side effects

i think that Mil/Mill was the user that set this off though. anyway while semi-on the topic of the B/I section, i was curious if that could be moved to the top of the main page, so that people might see it when they get here, i was posting here for quite some time until i saw the section, i just think it'd help facilitate the initiation of new mofo's

Yeah, but if they have to read 25 threads to get that far, they might just stick around a bit. Seems to up the liklihood from what it is now, anyway.

It's either Patton (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066206/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnxteD0yMHxzZz0xfGxtPTIwMHx0dD1vbnxwbj0wfHE9cGF0dG9ufGh0bWw9MXxubT1vbg__;fc=1;ft=2;fm=1) or The City of Lost Souls (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0246498/).

The date is a bit confusing though.

Loner, were your first posts short, did they ask a question? Did you run a search, post a thread in the right forum, or even come back and say "thanks"? Well let's see, 418 posts later, you should have!!!!

I think it's a good idea Chris... One question though, is this to try and reduce the amount of bandwidth used by one time wonders or to simply reduce the number of one time wonders? If its simply to reduce the number of people creating an account for one post I would suggest having a thread that allows guests to posts the 'what movie was this?' questions. That way those of us who feel friendly can still be of service to people looking for help :) Just a thought.

I lurked for awhile before my first post, tried to figure out the rules in advance.

Most of my posts are short anyways, my grammar is horrible.

I run a search every time I post a thread.

I try to get it in the right forum.

But my intentions are to stick around, not extract information and leave.

Seriously Yoda, what I think would really help this forum could be the elimination or combining of similiar threads.

r3port3r66

Mods make sure that all similar threads are either deleted or directed to the official one. Yoda has made it clear here that any duplicate thread will be deleted, or locked. Let's hear it for Yoda!

If it discourages fly by night posters who add nothing to the forums, good. If it encourages people to stick around and introduce themselves a bit more thoughtfully, great! I'm all for it, Yoda.

Foshur, i'm guilty as anyone for posting threads in the wrong place and tbh, Chris (probably) knows what he's doing. Hmmmm, yeah, I hope these rules are quite clear so people dont join and the post their question in any thread or something...

I think it's a good idea. I don't think I even read 10% of the new posts when I get here and I used to read at least half of them before. I also used to be against having a chat around here too, but maybe it would be a good idea. Then perhaps all those "what's your fav movie" threads would decrease in number.

MovieMaker5087
01-13-05, 05:48 PM
New problem:

They may not be able to make it at 25 posts, but they'll PM you.

I just got a spam PM from some guy named ThePlague who hasn't even made a new post yet. He's at 0! I didn't like when one-timers only made one post, but I definently do not like being PM Spammed to visit other movie making websites and being asked questions and such.

If all is possible, Chris, can this problem be solved before things get out of hand?

Yoda

If all is possible, Chris, can this problem be solved before things get out of hand?I doubt that's the result of the new thread rule; it's happened in the past, too. Anyway, the user's been banned. It's inevitable that it'll happen no and then, though.

Just think, without that thread we wouldn't know these songs:
Vanilla Sky - Ladies and Gentleman We Are Floating in Space
Bring it On - Get Ready For This
The Fast and The Furious - Nurega

Is your life not much better now you know that?

Although I believe this is a good way to keep people from leaving and start posting, but its starting to get annoying, If any of you have seen a few of the newbies, will agree with me. They'll just post like 25 in row and it'll be the same thing or something so stupid that after there done posting and they create a thread, about finding music from movies, that the person could have easily found on there own and leaving then comming back, for more.

Thanks for the links; I actually hadn't noticed that, for some reason.

Anyway, that's pretty annoying, I admit, but I don't think it'll be too common, and the rule has all but eliminated what used to be several duplicate or misplaced threads a day. It won't be much of an issue if they're reported; I always deal with reported posts right away, but if no one reports it, there's a decent chance I won't catch it.

Because, as one member who replied to it mentioned, we already had a thread about which of those two movies was better (so whatever search you ran couldn't have been particularly thorough), and we have several vaguely similar "versus" threads already also, if memory serves.

ok im sorry. I only searched debate and not The Godfather, Goodfellas or vs. my mistake. I just found the thread on those two films. Next time I will search multiple things before posting a thread. I could not find the versus threads though, maybe someone could post the links?
