Hi guys

A friend of mine and I have come up with an online scriptwriting idea we've had for years and we've finally been in a position to start it. I hope no one minds but Im just posting to see what people think of it.

The basic idea is that we've created the opening scene of a script, and we're asking people to submit the next 5-10 mins of script. We choose the best 5, display them and people can vote for their favourite one. The one with the most votes is the winner, that one then becomes part of the script and the same process continues till we have a complete script. The aim is to take it to companies/studios to get it made. At the moment it's monthly (3 weeks writing, 1 week voting) but are thinking of changing the timeline.

We launched in November and the script is definitely rolling. We've had great feedback so far with a lot of interest from people already (inc. media types, apparently! :) )

So what do people think? We'd be really interested to hear peoples thoughts. Positive and negative criticisms can all be constructive.

Sounds interesting although dont really think sharing of ideas and getting serious response would work to well.

A good idea in theory but I don't think it would really work. To make a great movie, I think it takes the sheer genius of one man's vision to do. With so many different people writing it, the movie would probably have a lot of different parts in it that don't feel related to the others. Also, I would never make a script democratically, relying on voting to make the story. Often times a well written scene that may not really fit in with the movies theme could be voted to keep simply because everyone likes it and for that purpose wants it in the movie. I'm not saying you couldn't get a good script or atleast a good story out of that technique but I don't think you'd ever come out with a product that would be hailed as one of the greatest movies of the year, decade, etc.

Also, it would be hard to get a studio to make it. Let me tell you. They all got their own agenda and most of the time now aday's, studios have people working for them that are paid to cater to the demands of the studio, Director and actors, consequently making their finished script pretty much up in the air. You can't just mail a script you wrote to a studio and expect them to take a serious interest in it. Not even today when most movies that come out are badly done, old ideas. But none the less, I wish you the best of luck. Cheers. :)
