Summary:
Troy is Hollywood’s most recent attempt at retelling Homer’s account of the ancient war between the combined armies of Greece and the city of Troy. This film focuses mostly on the role Achilles, Brad Pitt, played in the war. The war begins as a result of Paris (Orlando Bloom), stealing King Aggamemnon’s (Brian Cox) wife Helen, and bringing her to the legendary city of Troy. King Aggamemnon had been looking for a reason to attack Troy, and Paris’ decision provided him the spark to ignite the war. He knows that his best chance for success is to employ the independent thinking Achilles who is the fiercest warrior of the time.
Why You Should See This Movie:
The film does a good job at catching you up on your history lesson quickly in order to provide enough back information to understand the movie. The performances by Brad Pitt, and Eric Bana as Hector, are fabulous and truly draw you into the battles the characters face. Also, the characters of King Agamemmnon and King Priam (Peter O’Toole) are interesting and dynamic. The action sequences were unique and interesting especially the epic battle between Hector and Achilles. The story is very interesting and has lasted through thousands of years of retelling.
Why You Shouldn't See This Movie:
While not as graphic as it could have been, there are still plenty of battle scenes that may not be suitable for everyone, especially young children. The length also was also an issue, and although the story does not seem to bog down too much at any specific point, it does like shorter may have been better.
Conclusion:
Troy is an impressive epic war movie that seems to do a good job of retelling Homer’s classic tale. The battle scenes definitely are impressive on the big screen and will most definitely lose their luster at home, making this a must see in the theater.
