Hell yeah! I wasted way to much of my youth playing Duke 'Hail to the king baby' Nukem and Descent... I still think Descen was one of the first truly great networking games (well, computer dialup :))

Am I the only person who remembers the old side scroll Duke Nukem game? That was sweet as well.

I dunno about ten, but these ones stand out, to me:

Mario 64
After taking a few bizarre turns with the last few installments of their iconic franchise, Nintendo gets back to basics with Mario 64, introducing Mario, for the first time, in three-dimensional form. The game features a brilliant blend of simplicity (a castle full of rooms that can only be accessed by collecting various numbers of stars) and complexity (each room leads to paintings that, when entered, open up entire worlds in which you can collect said stars).

Mario is all but stripped of the increasingly odd powerups he'd had available to him in previous games, but the straightforward options of jumping or running are given a twist, as Mario is given superhuman gymantasic abilities to jump and flip. His moves are dependent on his direction, speed, and immediate environment, so that you can perform a number of different moves based on various contexts with the exact same buttons. This might be the best game ever made.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
It would have been all too easy for a game like this to take on an overly cartoonish, Aladdin-like feel, but Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time manages to maintain a serious tone while simultaneously exhibiting a fairytale-like quality.

Though it sports a story that wouldn't look out of place on the silver screen, Sands of Time's strongest point is the acrobatic abilities of its titular character. The Prince can run sideways on walls, up walls, kick off walls, hurdle over enemies, do cartwheels, dangle off cliffs, climb ropes and poles, and would be perfectly at home on the men's uneven bars.

As you can imagine, all this jumping around must make for a great many embarrassing (and fatal) falls. Not to worry, however: part of the game's storyline involves the ability to turn back (or slow down) time, allowing you to retry any ill-chosen move, even if it means undoing your own demise.

http://bonusweb.idnes.cz/obrazek/princeofpersiasot_scrn05.jpg

Super Monkey Ball
I would've loved to have seen the meeting where this game was first pitched. "Okay, we've got a monkey, right? And he's in a big plastic ball. And he runs around on floating platforms collecting bananas."

The idea was apparently just crazy enough to work, and the result is a game that is as creative as it is addictive. What puts it over the top, though, are the supplemental mini-games, where you can use your plastic-encased marcupials to play pool, race, box, fly, or even bowl. Kudos to Sega for thinking outside the box, and inside a ball, instead.

http://www.eurogamer.net/assets/converted/pics/articles/gclaunch/a_med_monkeyb.jpg

Super Mario Bros. 3
After the disaster that was Super Mario Bros. 2, you'd think Nintendo would shy away from the head-scratching oddities that sunk it. To the contrary, Super Mario Bros. 3 is, in many ways, even weirder than its predecessor. If you collect a floating leaf, you're given...wait for it...a raccoon's tail, that allows you to...what? Dig through people's garbage? No, it allows you to fly. And something called a "Tanooki" suit makes you look like a giant rodent and allows you to turn into stone, if you can believe that.

Somehow, this all made sense at the time. Or maybe our ability to reason was overwhelmed by the off-the-chart coolness quotient of warp whistles.

In hindsight, the decision to allow Mario to maneuver between levels on a map was gutsy, and may have been a precursor to Mario 64's castle layout. This is the best game ever made for the NES.

http://www.gameseek.co.uk/images/screens/super_mario_bros_3_3_gba.jpg

Intelligent Qube
The best game you've never heard of. The concept is simple: you're a man or woman with no discernable features standing on a giant column of cubes floating in oblivion. The ones in front of you roll forward relentlessly. You remove them (and thus avoid being crushed or run off the edge) by setting little "bombs" on the cubes below you, and then detonating them as the cubes roll past.

Throw in some black cubes (which you are penalized for deleting), and green cubes (which, once "captured," allow you to capture all immediately surrounding cubes), and you've got yourself a challenge, and one of the Playstation's most underrated games.

Call me old fashion but most of my favorite games are from 21th century.

NUMBER 1: Final Fantasy VII!!!!
2: Donkey Kong Country
3: Donkey Kong Country 2
4: Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire 64
5: Primal Rage
6: Banjo-Kazooie
7: Legand of Zelda: Oracle of Time
Tie 8: Jetpack/ Spider-man 2
9: Star Wars: KOTOR 2: Sith Lords
10: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

Without such games like FF7 and Shadows of the Empire, I probably wouldn't have the appreciation I have for video games that I do today .
Halo would been on my list but it's on everybody's list so I thought I give some variety.

The Legend of Alkabeth (Apple II) - This archaic adventire/RPG was my first exposure to graphics in games. I had a tiny little wireframe window to explore about. Was sort of the next level after stuff like Zork and Adventure!

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES) - My first exposure to 16 bit gaming, it was the first game I bought when I got my SNES system, and it blew me away with it's weather effets, dual world, and incredible level design.

Super Metroid (SNES) - Again with the first exposure to immersion in a video game, Samus jumped on the elevator and started decending into Norfair, the music kicked in, the lava was a'glowin and I stared in awe at what was before me.

Donkey Kong Country (SNES) - I am starting to realize the SNES was really one of the most revolutionary pieces of technology ever to come out, as it broke so much ground. I believe this was the first game ever to use the SG chip in a SNES game, and like Super Metroid, I remember passing the first couple of levels, marveling at the character models, and I got to a level where the monkeys go underwater and swim about. I was floored and kept dying on purpose so I could start the level over. I called into work the next day and played all day.

Street Fighter II (Arcade &SNES) - I started playing this one night while doing laundry. I popped over to the bowling alley nearby and a new game had arrived, SFII. A massive crowd was gathered I craned my neck to see what all the fuss was about. Never before (or again, as far as I am concerned) had anyone seen a head to head game with such variety, such character... I got hammered on that first night, but quickly got addicted and started learning all the fighters. this game was huge for a LONG time.

Resident Evil (Playstation) - I remember being sort of disappointed with my PS at first. I had picked up a couple of games like...lets see here...Warhawk and I believe..Crah Bandicoot, and was a bit underwhelmed. My friend stopped by at midnight on a work night one evening and said "Mike, you have to see this" and popped in Resident Evil. Sigh, another sick day at work. This was the first time a game had my jumping out of my chair and I THINK it was the first use of cut scenes I had been exposed to. I played this over and over again for months.

Final Fantasy VII (Playstation) - This was a revolution in gaming. No, it really was. Yes it was linear, sure it was overwhelming to some, and sure, the random battles were annoying at times. Meanwhile, the developers had written what I still think is one of the best (and most complex) stories ever done for a video game. The summon spells were mind blowing, the graphics incredible, the score was stellar, and there was enough to keep gamers busy upwards of 80+ hours, something that was unheard of at the time.

System Shock II (PC) - Sci-fi/Hooror in a fully immersive 3D world? Sign me up. When Deus Ex came out, people filipped out over the cool 'cyber-upgrades" and the combination of a shooter with an RPG type character leveling system. But...what about System Shock II? I would say, it already did all that! I guess SSII didn't have a good marketing team, but I was completely blown away. This sleeper hit caught me by surprise, and I had to play it twice.

Warcraft III (PC) - Got this the day t came out, and I still play it almost everyday, even if only to play a mod. My favorite RTS game, ever.

This last title is tough, as I have about 10 more games I would like to list, but I guess honorable mentions will have to do for those. Last but not least...

GTA:Vice City (PSII) - I had tried to play GTA III, but found it a bit to frustrating with some imbalance issues (Ambulance missions were IMPOSSIBLE). When I got VC, I was sucked into the living, breathing environment. Another revolution in design, and I feel I must include one of these games on my list. I can't list GTA: SA because 10 I haven't finished it yet and 2) I hate the soundtrack. The game is clearly great, but I feel lame listing a game I haven't finished.

Others I wanted to list but just missed the cut:

Secret of Mana (SNES), Chrono-Trigger (SNES), Half Life II (PC), Unreal, Super Mario Kart (SNES), Final Fantasy III (SNES), Deus Ex (PC), Kesmai Multiplayer Battletech (Online), Civilization III (PC), and Silent Hill II (PSII).

10. The 7th Guest - The scariest game ever created. It was groundbreaking when it came out because of the pre-rendered video and use of actual actors. I'm not too sure how it would stand the test of time and maturation, probably wouldn't find it scary now, but playing this in a room with a group of friends late at night...yeah, there were times I covered my eyes or ran out of the room. And the puzzles were actually hard.

http://www.basement-films.net/Peter/images/T7G-Box-Cover%20(Small)%20(WinCE).jpg

Old Man Stauf built a house
And filled it with his toys
Six guests all came one night
Their screams the only noise

No one knows what happened next
Theres no one left to say
But if you should see Old Man Stauf
Get on your knees and pray

9. Half-Life 2 - Fun as hell with graphics that will make you weep.

8. Super Mario Bros - Is there any doubt? Not too mention the greatest video game music ever composed. I can't imagine a day when people of our generation, when they hear the first three notes of the theme music won't jump in and finish it off.

7. Day of the Tentacle - Oh billy! Fun, fun, fun. Laughs and laughs and laughs. If you think you're a nerd and you've never heard of Day of the Tentacle, you're a poor excuse for a nerd.

http://www.basement-films.net/Peter/images/dotd-front.jpg
http://www.basement-films.net/Peter/images/dotd-back.jpg

6. Sam and Max Hit the Road - This is actually a better game then the two adventure titles that preceed it on the list, but I just love the harder edges of the Dig and Full Throttle more. If you haven't played Sam and Max you really, really, really doing yourself a disfavor.. It had humor and flare that was infiintely superior to anything that's coming out since.

http://www.samandmax.net/images/screenshots/hittheroad/hittheroad17.gif
http://www.samandmax.net/images/screenshots/hittheroad/hittheroad07.gif

5. Full Throttle - One of the finest adventure games ever. Again, a great sense of humor, fun as hell plot and innovative game play. The grittiest adventure game ever created.

http://www.basement-films.net/Peter/images/full-throttle.jpg

4. The Dig - Just one of the best executions in adventure gaming. A story forged by Steven Spielberg, created by the Lucas Arts team is a reciepe for awesome. This game is imagination.

http://www.basement-films.net/Peter/images/the-dig.jpg

3. Metal Gear Solid - The best of the best. This game started it all and finished it all. If there was ever a first game that set the bar high, this is it. It wasn't just set high, it's simply unreachable.

2. Fallout - Oh how I love this freaking game. It is the most realized vision of a future world ever created in a game. It has nuance out the ass. The dialogue is phenomenal. If you haven't played Fallout or Fallout 2, buy them right now (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00004ZBSX/qid=1114535288/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/104-0777108-4597565?v=glance&s=videogames&n=507846). This game is the reason I have a very, very, very high affection for anything post-apocolyptic. It has the best sense of humor and style ever to be contained within a computer game.

http://www.cdaccess.com/jpg/shared/front/large/fallout.jpg

1. Fallout 2

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00001QEQ8.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Just look at that picture and you'll see how Black Isle amped up the sequel to the greatest RPG ever created. It's just slicker, harder, meaner, and sicker. You can marry a mutant girl and if you start to run out of money, you can pimp her out. That alone right shows how raw these games are.

If you have patience, ie. your favorite game isn't Halo, spend the measely 5 dollars and buy both of these games (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00004ZBSX/qid=1114535288/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/104-0777108-4597565?v=glance&s=videogames&n=507846). You have no excuse to not spend 5 bucks and recieve the two greatest games ever created.

http://www.quandaryland.com/1996/pix1996/broken_sword.jpg

http://gammer.itc.ua/img/dpk/2004/1/brokensword4.jpg
YES!!!! The Broken Sword series is fantastic! Although, I never played the 3-D game. How was it?

In no particular order:

Resident Evil 4

This might possibly be my favorite game ever. That's a mighty big call, I know, but this is the best game in its series and its type. The action is actually fun which is unheard of in a Resident Evil game, plus it is still scary as hell, and I think geniunely more disturbing than the rest of the series.

Final Fantasy VIII

I love every game in the series, but this is the only one I ever actually beat. I love the gun-swords.

Halo 2

OK storyline, even though it was a blast to play through (especially that scene towards the end when Breaking Benjamin's music starts to play - brilliant), but honestly this game was always about multiplayer to begin with. It succeeded with flying flourescent colors.

Kingdom Hearts

Nothing has ever made me feel like such a kid as this game, while not making me feel lame for loving it. Best thing to come out of Disney, not involving Pixar, ever.

Project Gotham Racing

HUGE soundtrack, dangerously addictive gameplay, and by far most innovative racing game ever, that is until...

Burnout 3: Takedown

I was always a big fan of the Burnout series, and knew more people should get in on the fun. This solidified that, and redefined what "fast" meant in a racing game.

Escape From Monkey Island

Every single Monkey Island game was great. This was just the most recent.

System Shock II

This game was f***ing crazy. It took a lot for anything to scare me after playing this game. I literally got nightmares after playing this game. It was great.

Ninja Gaiden (X-Box)

Ninja brutality through and through. I've beaten it through twice and still want to play through it some more.

Half-LIfe

Evolved what a story could do in a first-person-shooter. The fact that people were still, and probably still are, playing Counter-Strike up until the release of Half-Life 2 is a testament to this game's greatness.

God I need a new computer.

Oh!! The 7th Guest!!! I played this on my 486. One puzzle was TOO DAMN HARD...Something about a tryst if I remember correctly, and I hadn't heard the word and was stuck FOREVER. And yes Fallout 2 was GREAT.

That reminds me, Another game worth mentioning is Buried in Time: The Journeyman Project II. Was out about the same time as 7th Guest, and had amazing graphics for the time. I remember being addicted to Buried in Time for a long time as well. For a game on a 486 PC, it had FANTASTIC graphics, which were pre-rendered sort of MYST like, but you could move around the areas instead of just looking at pictures. The locales were incredible, ranging from DaVinci's workshop, to a mayan pyramid, a medieval castle, and a space station. This was a puzzle based adventure game with no combat, but you could perish.

Funny thing, I played some of Zork recently, on a Unix box I had kicking around before I rebuilt the machine for Windows. It was fun, and I remembered a lot of it.

At lunch today I DLed a ROM emulator and a few SNES games. Played a little Donkey Kong Country, which was also quite fun for the nostalgia. Man, they really needed some anti-aliasing though ;)

A caveat. These games were made back in the day when things like "game balance" and even "gamers" didn't really exist yet. These games can be brutally harsh to the user, like say for instance Adventure!, where to get 100% complettion you needed a machine language decoder to compile some code for the last 1%. These games were little side projects, by programmers, for programmers, and Zork was the first of these to attempt slaes to the public. Some of the sulutions in the games are a bit...deep, for lack of a better term, and I would suggest a walkthrough before you get suck in one of the "Can't get out of here, ever" spots in these games.

Ok. So I got all nostalgic, talking about these games, and I fired up ZSNES (a SNES emulator for PC) and grabbed a few roms (yes, I do own the carts for these games, and can have a legal backup, so don't even start). First I popped in Donkey Kong Country and played for about 3 hours, which was an absolute blast. Then Zelda:A Link to the Past was next...Played till I couldn't keep my eyes open anymore. I am sure a lot of it was nostalgia but man did I have FUN playing these games. It's all free out there if one takes a few moments to track the stuff down...

I have the Zork Anthology... let alone Return to Zork as well. ("Want some rye? 'Course ya do!")

Zork is an AWESOME game. Sure, it may not have graphics, but that was the fun part of it all- you made them in your mind. The first, I think, is ingenious, and the entire game storyline is incredible. There was, at one point, a Zork movie that was to be made, but it never came around. Awesome game. And funny, too. And, come to think of it, my old 7th grade art teacher's brother was one of the programmers for Return to Zork... groovy, huh?

Also, for those of you who are fans of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the same programmer of Zork teamed up with the man himself, Douglas Adams, to create a text-based game based on the book. (You couldn't, however, use your book to help you out. Remember, it was a text adventure... anything could happen)

If you want to play a modernized version of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, complete with still graphics, then go here (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/hitchhikers/game_nolan.shtml). There are two versions, although I really don't know why. But hey, if you're an older type of gamer, then a realisitic remake of the original game as it would appear in 1984 can be played here (http://www.douglasadams.com/creations/infocom.php).

Remember, don't panic.

A new addiction has surfaced on the video game front for ol' Sedai.

Jedi Academy (PC)

I played the single player for a couple of minutes, and it seemed decent, but then it was onto the game servers for some sabre dueling action. I had started to learn the diffeent sabre fighting styles in Jedi Knight II:Jedi Outcast, so I had an idea of how the different sabre fighting styles worked, and how most of the force powers worked, minus a few new ones. So I pop into a low-ping server and create a slick Jedi to begin battling with. I was immediately handed my ass. Big time. Sith would grip my throat and toss me into a chasm, sabre-staff (ala Darth Maul) wielding Bobs Fetts would hack me down, and jawas would bounce all over the place using force pwers while zaping me with lightning.

Much training, did I require. Ok, Ok, I'll read the manual. I decide to go for the most defensive fighting style and create a new Jedi who specialized in dual sabre fighting, and I tweaked the force powers to work better in the online environment (read: force absorb, like our little green friend used vs Dooku in Ep. II). This time around, I happened to drop into a server full of really nice folks, which is sort of a rarity in other games I have played online, and got a fair amount of help. After a couple of hours I started to rack up a few wins while dueling, and also started to notice that I was playing one of the funnest games I have ever played.

Light sabre battles with combo moves, counters, different stances and force powers, all vs live opponents. I can't describe how much fun this is, and how exciting. The online component is set up well, too. Six different modes for multiplayer, most with safeguards against those who wish to act up, and try to ruin the game for others. The mode I was playing the most (FFA), had 32 people in the area, which was a desert rebel base sort of place. In this place, there were a fair number of people just going all out attacking everything in sight in this main wide open area, while in the side rooms and areas, one could challenge another player to a formal duel. This would put shields around your character and the chosen opponent, making actions by others against you impossible. There were many, many cool people who were down with this method, and I had a blast battling against them. Once this mode is engaged, force powers are shut off and it's all sabre technique. Intense stuff. After the duel, the score is tallied, the winner goes back into FA mode and the loser respawned to come back for more if they wished.

I spent about 25% of the time in the FFA mode going nuts with force powers (mostly light side) and the other time chatting with people and dueling. What a blast.

Here is the kicker. The game came out in 2003, and is available for about 18 bucks. It uses a slightly older engine (Quake III), but still looks amazing, and the sabre effects are stellar. Because of th lower resurce draw and graphics engine that isn't bleeding edge, the game runs flawlessly online, with 32 Jedi battling, on my system, which is getting a bit long in the tooth these days (clocking in at a mere 1.5 Ghz). I believe it's also available for the X-box, but why play at that poor screen resolution? I am not sure if the two systems use the same servers either...

Highly recommended, and I would love to play with some MoFo jedis...

1. Counter-Strike (Halflife mod) (PC)
One of the greatest multiplayers ever created, spawning countless maps and mods to accomodate everyone. The ultimate FPS multi. Hours and hours and hours of fun. :).
http://www.plainspot.com/blog/archives/img/040305-cs-thumb.jpg

2. Zelda: Ocarina of Time (64)
This game was very addictive and appealed to all ages with its complex puzzles, beautiful scenery and fun storyline. Just loved every minute of it.

3. Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne (PC)
This game was fun not only single player wise but more importantly multiplayer. Set up a game with six friends, with changing teams and there's endless fun to be had.

4. Super Mario Bros. 3 (Nintendo)
This was always a great game, you just can't beat the gameplay. I know some sony fans who reckon playstation has the best graphics of all the systems and is so much better. I just direct them to SMB.3 and they shut up after about an hour of playing, after using the flute to go straight to level 4 instead of 6.....fools......ok maybe I played this one a little too much when I was younger.

5. James Bond: Goldeneye (N64)
This game was the trigger for so many other First person shooter games, just loved it. It was "the" game for a good while and could not be matched on any level.

6. Heroes of Might and Magic III (PC)
Got a love the turn based style of this game. I had never played a game like it in my life and after about an hour I was hooked real bad. Never met a person who didn't like it.

7. Halo 1 (XBOX)
This game, while new, smashed onto the market and destroyed everything in its path. Just last weekend I met some guys at uni who had set up a 16 player halo night the night before, joining up 4 Xbox's. "boy's with their toys" maybe but would have been a heck of a lot of fun.

8. Battlefield 1942 (PC)
The simple variations created through Vietnam and Desert Combat provide endless entertainment. The feeling of driving an air craft carrier into the side of an island then all your friends taking off and blowing everything on the island to bits is so satisfying. Or the times I've planted C4 all around a tank and just waited for a friend of mine to go for it.......hilarium to be sure.

9. Final Fantasy VII (Playstation)
This was such a great game, did take a while to finish but very fulfilling none the less. From the visuals to the story it was quite perfect.

10. Diablo II (PC)
This game stole what was left of my holidays in year 10 and turned me into a monster who's only desire was to play, eat and sleep. It was and still is one of the most addictive games I've ever played. It left me wanting more even after finishing it with all of the characters.

Perhaps I am a gamer after all, always thought I wasn't really. Perhaps it's the fact most of my friends are huge rock fans and we were known at school for our crazy experiences in mosh pits and around huge concerts, not for the games we played.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^One of the funniest sites ive ever seen in my life. Allow me to elaborate on the subject. Now im going to use our real names in this tale. James Tarkey=Uncle Rico. Seth Andrew Kopchu=Moviemaker5087. Now, we were at Seths house playing Jurassic Park for da super nintendo gaming system. For the record you cannot save on this game so if the red light goes off its OVER! Now, while playing this extremley long game Seths Brother Sean decides to pay us a visit. He comes into Seths basement where we are playing the game and tells us that he needs to use this t.v. that we are playing on, to play Scene It. So Seth says, very powerfully i might add "No way buddy". So I sit there while the argument commences and for the first time in my life i feel a feud at the Kopchu residence.
Now somehow the argument leads us outside into the drive way, and out of nowhere, Sean throws Scene it and his walet down on the ground, hundreds flying everywhere, and gets up in Seths face. ITS ON! They start hitting eachother and pushing and what not and before ya know it Big Guy (a.k.a. Seths father) comes running outside to break up the fight.
The night ended with Sean saying "Seth, those fun family times are over buddy" . But hey, we saved the game. The Next Morning Seth gives me a call and says "Jamie, The Red light is off". So there it is.

It needs a pretty solid comp to play, not so much on the CPU front but heavily on the graphics front. I recently bought an ATI Radeon x800 XT All-In-Wonder and it runs BF2 with everything jacked as high as possible like buttah!

As for the game itself, all I've played so far is the demo (can't wait for the full version to come out on Tuesday), but the single player is just as much fun as multiplayer. The only complaint I have about the game is that I'm still adjusting to the aiming in it. I'm not sure if you have to lead or they just have wonky hitboxes, but some shots hit while others that should don't. But that also could just be a problem in the demo...

Here is my list, not in any particular order. Oh, and by the way, i'm a very old school gamer, nothing but N64 for me :)

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time:

I love this game. The numbers I spent playing this game is beyond numbers, so is how much I beat it. This is my second favorite Zelda game next to A Link to the past, and one of my favorite games of all time. This is one of those games that revolutionized the video gaming world, and at a very large magnitude at that. I remember when I did not have the game itself, reading reviews online drooling with anticipation. Man, those were the days. I don't play it as much today but after several years I still pop that baby in once in a while!

The Legend of Zelda: Majoras Mask:

I also liked this game very much. It may not have been as good as Ocarina of Time, but it offered a completely different gameplay style which I liked equal to Ocarina of Time. I was not drooling with anticipation like for Ocarina of Time that because I know what to expect in sequels, most of the time they are not better, and by the looks of reviews and such, turns out I'm right. Saved me alot of disappointment.

Goldeneye:

Another one of my beloved video games on my favorite game system. This game changed the face of first person shooters. In my opinion, not many games if any, come even close too this game in terms of the genre. One thing I would also like to add is that this is the first video game based on a movie that is actually good!! Don't get me wrong, their is others, but none compare to this one, at least in my opinion.

Mario Kart 64:

Your probably wondering why this ended up in my list right? http://mariokart64.com/ (http://mariokart64.com/) Their goes your answer! This game is my favorite game of all time because of that site! I'm ranked 2nd in time trials world wide!!! Even without this site this game is good, but I must admit, the life span of this game would be cut in half without that site. This is one of those games that offer hours of fun in terms of multi player. If your having a party, this is a perfect game to have!!!

Perfect Dark:

The same people who made Goldeneye do not fail to make another great game! This game is awsome! The multiplayer is just crazy! Sims for when you have no one to play with, several different types of game play, you can even control your sim. If you want to have clan wars against a friend using sims and such, this is the game to have!! This is another game that is awsome to play at parties and stuff. The single player is also amazing! The story, levels, and gameplay are all well put together.

Star Fox 64: Lylat Wars:

This is probably the worst game on my list of favorites, but that does not mean it isn't a good game. This game was very addictive for me, and I played it countless hours! And got some pretty good scores too!! 121 Sector Z!! This is better then the SNES version in my opinion, but many disagree. One thing I do hate about this game is SLIPPY!! HE WINES TO MUCH! "FOX!! HELP!! THEIRS A SPIDER IN MY COCKPIT!"

Super Mario 64

Ah yes, Super Mario 64, last but not least. This game is incredible, when Nintendo's main franchise stepped into the 3D rule he left a mark that will forever remain. This game is up there with the best games of all time in my opinion!!! This game was really fun to play, spent hours and hours, I even went a speed run a couple of times with no results. Well, to make this game short because I don't want to make my post to long, here is one word that will describe it all! < Insert fantastic Word Here>

There you have it!!

10. Skies of Arcadia

This is the dark horse on my list, I guess. I doubt many people played it, as it was a Dreamcast RPG overshadowed by many more popular Playstation RPGs. But you know what? I loved it. It was obscenely long and immersive, the graphics were rich, and the ship battles were fantastic. The story was pretty formulaic, but it was fun all the way through.

9. Dynasty Warriors 3

My friend and I discovered the cooperative mode on this game, and ended up playing it all night. The gameplay is pretty repetitive, but it's some of the best "big battle" action you can find. The style is pretty laughable, but we had tons of fun. We played the crap out of that game, leveling up our favorite fighters, collecting new items, and playing battles from different points of view. Awesome.

8. Knights of the Old Republic

Kudos to BioWare for giving us the first truly deep Star Wars-themed video game ever. I didn't know if the concept would sell because the story was so far removed from the films (that everyone knows), but it was an incredible experience. It is one of the best (and best looking) RPGs to date.

*SIDE NOTE: Playing through as a good guy was fun, but playing through as a bad guy was divine. :)

7. NFL 2K

My friends and I played this religiously for months, despite the updated versions (and updated competition games) that were released. It was just a blast, and we loved trying to hit each other between plays - it was like a built-in mini-game. :)

6. Resident Evil: Code Veronica

This was the first 3D Resident Evil, and boy was it sweet. I played through it in about a week, because I couldn't stop. It was incredible.

5. Shenmue

I don't care what anyone says, this game is a blast. It's innovative in every way, and I thought it all went together well. The story wasn't very deep, but it was compelling to play through (trying to find that next clue, and getting attacked from out of nowhere). And the character interaction is some of the best I've seen, because it was like really having a life inside the game. Still one of my favorites, and I hope Yu Suzuki continues the line.

4. The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker

This one caught me off-guard in nearly every way. I wasn't a fan of the graphics until I played it, and I wasn't really crazy about the story concept until I played through it. What I thought was something very distant from my beloved Zelda games was actually something that sat very close to them. It was a sequel to Ocarina of Time - something I never thought I'd get, and wasn't expecting - and the story was absolutely stunning. That segment in Hyrule Castle is, I would argue, one of the all-time best video game moments. It gave me chills.

3. Resident Evil 2

I completed this game entirely. I played through every scenario, every point of view. I explored all the secrets, and completed all the sub-quests. I LOVE this game. This, I think, along with the Gamecube remake, is Resident Evil at its best. The environments, the story, and the action - they just sucked me right in.

2. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

The best game of all time is also nearly my most favorite, and for good reason. No game has ever gotten any closer to perfection. Ocarina symbolizes everything video games should be, and because of that, it sets itself apart from all other games. For me, it is more than just a game. It is a complete and untarnished masterpiece, and no matter how old it gets, it will still be just as enjoyable as the day it was released (which is the day I fell in love with it).

1. Halo

I've never played a video game so much in my life. My friends and I played this consistently for three years without taking breaks. It never got old, never got boring. The smoothness and sophistication of this game's gameplay is unrivaled. I've never had more fun playing a game, and I doubt I ever will. I was used to the same types of shooters, and this was different. New. Evolved. It ceased to be a game, and became an experience, a struggle. Never has a game challenged me so much, and never have I felt so accomplished for meeting and overcoming those challenges. My friends and I play Halo 2 all the time now, but when I'm at home, I STILL play this game (and as a matter of fact, we still play it when we feel like revisiting our old stomping grounds).

10. Decathlon (on Commodore 64)
9. Bust a Move (not the dance game)
8. Alundra
7. Silent Hill II
6. Broken Sword II
5. NHL 98 (EA Sports... and it rocked)
4. Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
3. Pro Evolution Soccer (the second one, I think...)
2. Anna Kournikova's Smash Court Tennis
1. Quake

Yay, i remember that one. Used to play the cranky old PC version (but then my French exchange beat all my records and i got annoyed with it ;))

[size=3]3. Pro Evolution Soccer (the second one, I think...)

Man, they're all good. Best footie game ever. So realistic. Playing with 2 players on the same team is just quality. Shouting 'chip it!' at each other and pelting into the box and stuff. Class :).

Managed to break my game absorbtion for many years, but got sucked into downloading free demos in the last year or so.

Battlefield 2 is definitely horribly addictive. :yup:

Heh heh... I never thought being a drummer would pay off in the world of video games. Joystick-jerking while playing Decathlon and drumrolls on the joypad when playing Sega's Track and Field (which perhaps should have been on my list as well).

Not a lot of quakers and Silent Hill fans here I take it..... :(

Btw, does anyone here know if there's somewhere that I can get a hold of Quake or Medal of Honor: Allied Assault? I lost Quake when I changed computer and my Medal of Honor is not feeling good, and I don't know what's wrong with it.

I haven't played the latest one yet. But the second one took about a year of me and my friends' life. What team did you play with? I always played with either Netherlands or Croatia. The names of the players were hillarious, thanks to a downbreak in negotiations for the rights I guess. :D

I remember playing the first Silent Hill when it came out on the PS1 but didn't think it was as good as Ressie Evil. ;)

Have you tried Ebay? That's where I picked up my copy of FF VII. I have a copy of Quake (or maybe Quake II) somewhere though my stock response thesedays is "it's in a box......somewhere." :)

On a Decathalon-related note, I can remember getting my hands on a programmable joystick which negated the need for repeated button pressing (autofire y'see ;)) but took all the fun out of the game. Doubt if even Ben Johnson at his most wired could have beaten my 100m time of 5.9 seconds though the Olympic testers might have detected unusually high traces of Lilt in my sample...

Yeah, too right. I remember getting an adapter at one point that allowed me to plug in my two knackered joysticks into one input. One could still go up-n-down, and t'other l-and-r. Together they just about worked ;). [pressing the buttons as well could be a bugger tho. I think i used my foot for a while]

Me and a mate help out on each other's masterleagues as a rule. Now that Spurs are doing alright, i've actually got a team that ain't half bad n'all. Buying Edgar Davids was a treat :).

I kind of like choosing silly stand-in commentary names for my created players. My wingers Lennon and Routledge get called Luna and Rat. (One very drunken night i also made a team of kung fu action stars  ).

The only prob i've seen with the latest one is that it makes you do a time-sucking training section if you're playing the master league. Can't be bothered with that.

You should definately play Silent Hill II. Perhaps is a matter of taste. Ressie is more action where Silent Hill is more about creating a depressing feeling and sense of hopelessness. I loved it....

£10 or thereabouts inc postage, which was quite a good deal as most of the others seemed to go for 13-14. It cost me well over £30 first time round, wish I'd kept it now. ;)

I've played about halfway through Silent Hill 3 and I thought it was more shoot-em-up and less horror/mystic than Silent Hill 2. And that's a bad thing to me.. But sure, it's still good.

I only played the demo, which was in a fair ground if i remember and some giant teddy bear or something jumped from nowhere and killed me. It was pretty intense.

I played through Silent Hill 2 a fair amount but my life with that game just fizzled out.

Adding another greatest game of all time!!

Freespace 2

http://www.game-over.net/review/oct99/freespace2/Screen18.JPG

The last of the great Sci-Fi space sims. Intense, engaging dogfights, compelling storyline delivered with clarity and conviction, Massive fleet-scale battles with dozens of small craft as well as enormous capital ships that would loom over your tiny craft as you zigged and zagged through the battle, and a brilliantly executed learning curve that started you off pointing and shooting, and worked up to commanding entire wings on multi-goal space missions. One of the few games published in 1999 that satill has a massive player base and a huge mod community. I spent many an hour in the Terran/Visudan Alliance, and I am not even that big of a fan of Sim games. I still have this game on my pc today....

It needs a pretty solid comp to play, not so much on the CPU front but heavily on the graphics front. I recently bought an ATI Radeon x800 XT All-In-Wonder and it runs BF2 with everything

Ahh this game rules. I definately need to fit battlefield 2 in there somewhere now. Probably just replace battlefield 1942 because it's an extremely enhanced version of it; medics, stingers, heli's, jets oooo I am lovin it!

I'm adding Shadow of the Colossus to my list (number 5, I guess - everything below it takes one step down). I just beat the game, and wow. This is definitely a humbling experience of a video game. The scale is phenomenal, and the realism impeccable. But the satisfaction you get from bringing down all these colossi (some more frustrating than others) is immeasurable.

Play this game.

ok, there's games I like to watch and support my friends through, and games I play myself.

the "watchers"
resident evil series
silent hill series

the "players"

grim fandango
Dude. Such quality, such depth, such style, such pinache, such dialogue, such scripting ... whew!
Something's rotten in the Land of Dead and you're being played for a sucker. Meet Manny Calavera, travel agent at the Department of Death. He sells luxury packages to souls on their four-year journey to eternal rest. But there's trouble in paradise. Help Manny untangle himself from a conspiracy that threatens his very salvation.

supermario bros 3 me and that raccoon suit man ...whirr, whirr, whirr!

final fantasy series (preference to #8)
This is where I got into console video gaming, actually. I liked that I could play a game for dozens of hours and milk it. However, after being inundated with Japanese RPGs, this is where I stop, now. I don't buy any other new ones with party systems, cutesy characters, and random fights while exploring maps ... my diet here is now solely FF, for nostalgic purposes.

the sims (bustin out/pc)
I am new to this world and was introduced via the PS2. Which got me onto the PC Sims 2, which is very addicting ...

Grand Theft Auto 3, San Andreas
I am so stuck on the helicopter section, but I was doing so good up til then! These were games that used to intimidate me but once you get the hang of em, maaannnn. The acting! The full immersion in a pretty realistic world! Woo! Contrary to someone else's post, i adore the soundtrack. Particularly the early nineties r&b ... "You need a maaan ... with ... sensiiitiiiivityyy ... a maaan like meee ..." (ahahaha, Ralph Tresvant!)

god of war
whoooweee. i tried shadow of the colussus, it can eat my shorts. i don't think it even comes close to god of war. the depth of story, the visuals, the physicals ... ehehehe. and man, that voice over! KRATOS!!!

baldur's gate pc/ps2
i'm a true rpg girl. i like brigandine, studded armor, chain mail, quivers of arrows and flails. i like trekking through the world switching weapons, stopping at taverns, selling my booty and powering up my spells and skills. the world of elves, dwarves, barbarian humans, spellcasters ... ahh, heaven. and baldur's gate has always handled it just the way mama likes it.

indigo prophecy
dude, this game was just too good. some issues with the controls but the cinematic involvement aspect ... hot d@mn!

thassit fer now ...

thought i would just transfer my top ten from another thread to this one.

10)http://www.christiananswers.net/spotlight/games/2000/thesims3.jpg
The Sims(PC)
Whole lotta depth into this very great and creative title. While living life in a game may sound boring it definitly isn't with having to raise children to worrying about a career this game and alot more is just great all around.
9)http://www.megghy.com/immagini/Psx/FICHE%20T/COVERS/Twister%20metal%202.jpg
Twisted Metal II(playstation)
imroves on the original in almost everyway. better graphics, better car, better stories and better controles also with the addition of co-op its just a blast to play and even with the last two awesome twisted metal games(Black and Head on) this will never get old.
8)http://www.yoshilore.com/Game_Features/images/SuperMarioWorld/boxartfront.jpg
Super Mario World(Super Nintendo)
one of the first games I have memories of playing. my older brothers got Super Nintendo and this came with it and i had great memories of playing as both mario and luigi through this long fun and challenging classic game.
7)http://www.consoleclassix.com/info_img/Mortal_Kombat_II_GEN_ScreenShot1.jpg
Mortal Kombat II(Super Nintendo)
Just like super mario world, one of the first games ever played. And just like Twisted Metal II it improves on the original Mortal kombat in so many ways. more characters, moves and arenas. great for any fan of fighting games
6)http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Sleezy/Photoshop%20Experiments/10grandtheftauto3.jpg
Grand Theft Auto III(Playstation 2)
I actually liked the old GTAs for playstation but i new they were just for fun and this series could never become great or classic. man was i wrong. GTA III completely changed the whole series. its was now 3rd with a cast of voice actors and a good story line and just fun to roam around the streets. while th enewer ones are more fun to play now they werent nearly as revolutionary as GTA III
5)http://www.videogameconnection.com/images/PSresidentevil.jpg
The first game to actually scare the crap outta me and basicly invented the horror survival game genre. with many sequels and a remake this is definitly the best
4)http://ffxteam.ifrance.com/box/box-us-front.jpg
Out of all the final fantasy's this one IMO had the best characters and story line. this was the first great RPG for the PS2 and really showed off the graphical capabilities for the PS2. very long and challenging but its worth it.
3)http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/8/8d/Goldeneyebox.jpg/230px-Goldeneyebox.jpg
With out a doubt the best film to game ever made. first great console shooter with both single and multi player which were a blast. while it looks inferior to the standards of todays console shooters it paved the way back in 1996 when it was first released
2)http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v254/Sleezy/Photoshop%20Experiments/1zelda.jpg
The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time(Nintendo 64)
This is one of the only games i think are truley perfect. We see link like we have never before. in full 3D with this lengthy intresting adventure. The story line is great filled with tons of humorous characters but also retains a serious side. the only thing is this seems like to be marketed to younger children but the difficulty is definitly not for younger kids.
1)http://images.game-and-fun.de/10020035002_gr.jpg
Not only the greatest stealth based game but IMO the greatest game ever. while some people say the first metal gear solid was better but this added what I think was a much better story line, and a change of main character. the gameplay is much more fun in this then was in the first. now you could look in first person view and alot more interactivity with the environments. some people complaine that there are too many cutscenes which take away from the gameplay however its just the opposite. the great story which is told in amazing cutscenes with superb graphics add you into the game and feel for the characters. I only wish you could control snake a little more than the first couple of scenes of the game.

Heroes of Might and Magic 4

Wanted to add another game to the ever-growing list. Someone had mentioned Heroes of Might and Magic III, which I agree was amazing at the time and offered a ridiculous amount of depth and playability. Heroes IV is oft-maligned as too much of a deviation from the original Heroes formula. Heroes were brought out onto the battlefield, the town system was completely changed, with a Magic:The Gathering style alignment wheel, and when the game shipped, it was rushed and the final product was marred with numerous bugs and some serious imbalances.

Years later, after five patches and a community built balance package called Equilibris, Heroes of Might and Magic IV is considered one of the finest Turn-Based Strategy games ever made, with a large user-base, as well as a fleet of mod/map makers constantly adding new content. For some reason, I find myself firing this game up time and time again. Lately, my Special Lady Friend(TM) and I have been chewing through hours and hours of play as we ally against wily AI opponents. We are both totally addicted to this classic TBS.

Well, I was 20 years ago, dunno about now. I sold my bike (and my Speccy 128), saved money like Scrooge on the discovery that his pension plan was worthless and begged my folks like a little whining git just so I could get an Atari ST on which to play Elite in all its glorious shaded polygon-ness.

This is a tough one.
There have been so many videogames over the years I've really enjoyed playing.

Firstly, City of Heroes is the top of the list.
It's a mmorpg I've been hooked on for 4 years running now. Bought 3 accounts for it to satisfy my alt-a-holic tentacies.

They tend to blurr after that one but in no particular order:

From the newer stuff...
Gears of War
Timeshift
Blacksite: Area-51
Justice League Heroes

From the older stuff...
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron & Rogue Leader
Star Wars: Jedi Outcast & Jedi Acadamy
Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter
Starfox
Eternal Darkness
Dino-Crisis 2
Fear Effect 2
007: Goldeneye

And from the really old stuff...
Space Invaders
Asteroids
Defender

I'm sure I'm forgetting some but these ones I remember spending the most time on.

I don't play a lot of video games so a top 10 is impossible. But I have always loved this game...

Heroes 3: Of Might & Magic

Now I'm off to play it.

This thread lies dormant for about four years and you bump it just to name one game?

Very impressive.

Here are my favourite games. I seem to only get into games that are clearly cinematically influenced.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

Obviously influenced by numerous gangster films like GoodFellas and specifically Scarface, Vice City lacks the huge scope and sprawling maps of San Andreas, but I think it's tighter, more believable and more competent in the story area, and the voice talent is amazing. Plus, it's tons of fun.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops

In my opinion, the campaign for Black Ops is about as cinematic as games get. The slow motion used in some areas of gameplay, the cryptic plot that leaves a million questions at the end, the brilliant vocal talents of Ed Harris and Gary Oldman. I was in awe playing this campaign for the first time.

Heavy Rain

Truly brilliant. If it's film adaptation goes ahead, hopefully they'll get Fincher to direct, because his style is perfect for this dark, constantly evolving adventure that is pretty much a game changer for the video game medium.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

I'm not that impressed with the gameplay, but the story and plot are handled brilliantly in what is essentially a homage to Kubrick; the exploration of the relationship between man and machine, the gloomy tone, the equally gloomy visuals, and a cold protagonist who we are forced to sympathize with, because he's the only character we really spend any time getting to know.

+rep for Human Revolution alone. I should probably play Heavy Rain sometime, actually.

It is a fantastic game, which almost transcends the medium and becomes something else. Check out this trailer, possibly the greatest trailer of all time:

Video games have long been a favorite hobby of mine. I’ve gotten so into them that I will defend any claim against them being a new form of art (not yet, but getting there). And so, I will now present my top ten favorites in this category. I’m using entire game series as well, not just individual games. So let’s not waste any more time.

#10) Spyro the Dragon series – This lovable purple dragon won the PlayStation (and Sony in general) over for me, and it’s hard not to see why. It has a great yet simple story, excellent graphics for the PS1, and the controls were tight and responsive. Some might call it a typical platformer, but it’s a fun and exciting one at that. The enemies might be a bit weak, but it’s still fun to burn them with your flame breath or give them a taste of your pointy horns. Though the first three games were sublime in their overall presentation and quality, the era starting with Enter the Dragonfly (horrible game, by the way) began dying a slow and painful death, changing the story too much for any die-hard Spyro fan to enjoy. Nevertheless, the first three games are the only ones I’ve ever loved, and they are the ones I still remember after all this time.

#9) BioShock – This game is demented in more ways than one, but I’ll get to that. First, the presentation: excellent graphics on all versions, a dark yet awesome story, and controls that will shame any first-person shooter. Mixing first-person shooter controls with an RPG (role-playing game) element was the best part of the game, with the player being able to upgrade weapons and abilities with relative ease. The art is also top-notch, having some of the best artwork and architecture ever put in any video game period. The game’s story, however, is a bit twisted. Don’t get me wrong: I love it no matter what. It follows an Ayn Rand-style dystopia story with some incredible moments and interesting philosophy (which I don't agree with). The characters are also well-developed, but some of them need to be locked up in an insane asylum for life with some of the crap they pulled. Having said that, this is a memorable game with a compelling story and dark world that keeps begging you to stay.

#8) Assassin’s Creed series – Nothing is true; everything is permitted. That’s the creed of the Assassin’s in this interesting take on how religions really came about (it’s much more complicated than that, but it’s too much to talk about here). The graphics and visuals are stunning, the controls are sublime, and the story is one of the most original and thought-provoking of any video game I've ever played period. The idea to blend together a futuristic setting with those of the past is what really makes this game so unique in presentation and style. You travel through the Middle East during the Crusades, Italy during the Renaissance, and the beginnings of the Ottoman Empire as assassins seeking the truth about the world and stopping the Templar order from taking over. Each entry in the series has been near flawless, though the more recent ones seem more like filler than anything else. That aside, this is one near-perfect game series that hopefully will end with as big a bang as when it began.

#7) Heavy Rain – This game is an interactive wonder. Almost everything about this game works. The realistic movements and facial expressions, the interaction with everyday objects, and the realism of the story it presents. The story is one of the most mercurial stories ever conceived—it contains twelve different endings! But the way the story develops is what sells the game. Through the interactions of the four very likable and well-developed characters, the gamer can decide their fate and the fate of the game by the actions these characters perform while charged with the task of tracking down a ruthless serial killer. The game takes the PlayStation 3 controller and even the Move to their maximum potential. I will admit, however, that the ultimate weakness is the plot’s predictability at times. Many gamers can overlook the sometimes hammy voice acting from the supporting cast and the sometimes stiff walking controls. What really captivates is the emotionally gripping story that will bring out a roller coaster of emotions in one single game.

#6) Dragon Age series – I’ll admit: RPG fantasy games are hard games for me to get into. Only when I found Dragon Age: Origins did that change for the better. The first game is by far the best with its excellent controls, impressive voice-acting, great musical score, and amazing visual presentation. The character customization is done very well (BioWare is amazing at that), and the gamer can even add some personality to their created player. The story is grand and epic, as one would expect from a fantasy-style world. The defining factors for this game are these. First, the attention to detail is staggering. The world they built with this series is unbelievably enormous, and not one of it is the least bit boring. Second, the phenomenal voice casting helped to create very memorable characters. Dragon Age II did a lot of these things right, especially in the gameplay department. Only a few things weren't as great—the world layouts sucked, the story was weaker, the characters weren't as memorable, and the feel of it just wasn’t as epic as the first. That being said, I like both games and I hope the third is a much better improvement on the second.

#5) God of War series – I love Greek mythology, and the God of War series gives it an entertaining and brutal twist. The controls make it the king of the button-masher, the visuals are some of the best the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 have ever seen, and the story is immersive to say the least. You play as Kratos, a vengeful and powerful Spartan warrior seeking retribution from the nightmares of his past. In order to do this, he must take down Ares, the God of war. How’s that for an awesome story? Kratos himself is a very sympathetic and well-developed hero, if a bit brutish at first blush. As the series progresses, you see his side of things more and more as betrayal and heartache run rampant in his life. The gameplay features endless button-mashing and quick-time events dedicated to tearing your enemies a few new ones. The puzzles are also surprisingly complex, but never aggravating. I can think of little that doesn’t make this series close to being perfect, apart from the hair-tearing amount of suspense the third game left me with. Regardless, this is a violent and larger-than-life game that keeps you glued to the TV right until the final act.

#4) Batman: Arkham Asylum & Arkham City – Batman games have been cursed with terrible gameplay and repetitive missions…until Rocksteady came and surprised everyone with Arkham Asylum. The responsive controls, amazing visuals, and a story worthy of the original Batman comics make this and its sequel a force to be reckoned with in the gaming community. It’s the controls and atmosphere that take the cake in these games. Batman himself controls smoother than glass, and the dark nature of the comics is well-presented. The characters themselves are portrayed accurately, with the same voice actors from the animated series coming back to give us another taste of why that show was amazing. Mark Hamill (you know, Luke Skywalker in Star Wars?) especially comes out swinging as the maniacal Joker, who’s disturbing yet hilarious persona still charms players and Batman fans to this day. Many other memorable characters from the Rogues Gallery enter the line-up, such as Harley Quinn, Mr. Freeze, Scarecrow, Penguin, and many more. Though I found the predator mode too awkward in the first game and the detective sight too necessary, Arkham City improved on these things to the extent that the sequel is superior to the original. Either way, both of these games are astounding, and I’m glad I played them.

#3) The Legend of Zelda series – What? The Legend of Zelda isn’t number one? How can that be? Simple: there are two games I played that I like more. But onto praising these games first. Just about every entry in this series has the following: amazing controls, a deep storyline, memorable and touching music, groundbreaking visuals for each Nintendo gaming system it was featured in, and arguably the nicest and most lovable video game character in existence, Link. The typical Zelda story is as follows: Hyrule, or whichever other world is featured, is in trouble because of the evil dark Lord Ganondorf. So Link, the chosen hero, must battle Ganon to restore order and save the Princess Zelda. Only twice that I know of (haven’t played every single game) has avoided this story (Majora’s Mask and Skyward Sword), but both games were sublime in their own way. Each game has its own charm, and everybody has a favorite—mine’s Twilight Princess. I can’t think of much bad to say about the series, only that Oracle of Seasons/Ages weren’t that great, and that the change to virtual console gave Ocarina of Time some stiff controls. Aside from that, each game is nearly flawless, and I’m glad I’ve experienced them.

#2) Chrono Trigger - Well, this game is just about perfect for an SNES game, even though it was one of the last true SNES titles to be made. Almost everything about this game is just incredible. Tight controls, a memorable storyline, and unforgettable characters make this game a timeless classic. The story is about Crono (correct spelling) and his friends traveling back and forth through time in order to stop the evil entity known as Lavos. Everything after that just makes the game fun, exciting, and overall addicting. The story is unique, even in a gaming world that has used the time travel gimmick to near death. The RPG style is reminiscent of the original Final Fantasy games, though in a much simpler format. The characters, ranging from a frog, a cave woman, and a robot, are each built with great personalities and strong battle features. It's also neat to note that this game features twelve different endings, much like Heavy Rain, depending on what actions you take during the game. This leaves the player with a choice of how they want the story to progress, especially if they've never played the game before. Overall, this game is complex, fun, and a joy to own. Rating:

#1) Shadow of the Colossus – That’s right, this is it. One of the greatest video games ever created, and it also happens to be my all-time favorite game. Everything about this game is incredible: the story, the characters, the controls, the visuals, the music…am I missing anything? The story is about a boy named Wander wanting to resurrect Mono, a girl he loves who was sacrificed. He makes a deal with a mysterious being known as Dormin, but must kill sixteen colossi from the forbidden lands in order for Dormin to help out. That is the focus of the game: the colossi battles. They’re the only enemies in the game (I'll give you a second to comprehend that), and they are just one epic battle after another. Each battle is set-up perfectly, and each colossus has a unique way of being taken down, requiring the player to find that method. The gameplay is very realistic, from Wander scaling the colossi to the horse movements and reactions (though the latter feels stiff). The soundtrack is one of the defining moments, with each track giving several Hollywood scores a run for their money. However, nothing prepares the player for the emotional wallop the game delivers throughout the game. I won’t reveal much, but let’s just say this: there’s a price to be paid for disobeying authority, even if for good intentions. This game made my heart pound and cry all in one playthrough, and I’m glad I could’ve had that experience while I’m still young.

You'd probably love Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, if you like heavily cinematic games. It gives details about the previous games (which are cinematic by their own right), but the presentation and gameplay is absolutely perfect, in my opinion.

I'm going to say that one of my favorite games has always been Earthbound. If you haven't played it, you're living life wrong.

One of the craziest, trippiest out games out there. Easily on par with FFVII in the RPG world.

I would say FF6, because I find 7 a bit overrated, to be honest. But Earthbound is fun, hilarious, and at times very creepy (Giygas...*shudders*).

Off the top of my baldy head:

1. Elite ZX Spectrum and Atari ST

The auto-fire button on a 3rd party gamepad has probably got more code but Elite was huuuuuuge. When I was in my early teens, a mate and I played Elite for 24 hours straight. Never done even approaching that with a game before or since...

My love for open world, non-linear stuff began with Elite. ;)

2. Arcanum PC

It was made by some of the guys behind Fallout. It's an RPG. It's non-linear (ish). It's Steampunk to the core. It's got an amazing score.

Hooray! Although:

It's buggy and feels a bit unfinished.

Although:

A decade of fan patches has finally fixed the game and restored all the content. Along with a widescreen patch for modern monitors and a load of tweaks in the same vein as Baldurs Gate and the first two Fallouts now have, Arcanum can be played by everyone. It's cheap on GOG. ;)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzeW7nazfds

3. Deus Ex PC

Nuff said.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khQ4owaUURo

4. Tomb Raider PS1 and PC

My jaw dropped when I first saw a friend playing this. A polygonal fully 3D runny jumpy climby game! With my favourite ever video game music! And conical breasts! :D

Still got the PS1 discs for the first 3 games plus the PSN downloads and now the GOG PC ones. ;)

5. Metal Gear Solid PS1

Solid Snake? Fnarr fnarr...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpG9XIfFkE0&feature=relmfu

6. Oblivion PC

Morrowind had the better setting (a dark, strange world compared to Oblivion's more generic fantasy setting) and music but Oblivion had the better gameplay. Simples. ;)

Hmmmm, game music seems to be a common theme with me.

7. Final Fantasy VIII PS1

Yes, VIII. Eight.

Not VII. Not Seven. :p

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVNtDErX0jI

8. Gran Turismo 4 PS2

Apart from western RPGs, my other great gaming time sinker is driving sims and GT4 was the one where I went from being a Ridge Racer style arcade racer to a fully blown wheel-wielding suspension botherer.

I'm now a beta tester for rFactor 2. Go figure. ;)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PfWLtgXLB8

9. Flashback Sega Megadrive

Fiendish one shot kills and sheer drops just off-screen meant this was a game for those with a good memory and the propensity for enjoying re-running the same level again and again until it was finished. I don't have a good memory and have little tolerance for trekking back to the start of a level time and again but I still loved Flashback. ;)

Loved the combat personally but FFVI is probably the only one in the series which doesn't have a ton of whiny Emo characters. Comes with the territory with JRPGs I guess, which is why I don't play many of them.

FFVI isn't the only one, but I get what you're saying. I like them because of the settings and stories. The only ones I know of that don't have a whiny emo character in them are 1 through 6, 9, 10, and 12. Which, now that I think about it, is the majority of the titles in the series.

Tidus? Vaan? And those are just the central characters. ;D I think that once the series featured voice acting the whiny Emo-ness became worse. ;)

The only JRPG I've played recently which has a degree of maturity across the board was Lost Odyssey, although the Emos all seem to have been replaced by Goths.

Catch 22 really. :D

This thread is bringing out some great nostalgia for me :)

Great list, Tact. HUGE fan of PS1 games from back in the day. You know, where 80% of the games were not generic 1st person shoot em ups.

I always always told that Flashback was a sequel to Another World??. Certainly as hard though. Preferred Another World too as it seemed more surreal and I played it first. Think I must've been like 6 when I played it, so it was a pretty big thing. Didn't complete neither of them.

Heres my list in no particular order:

1) Resident Evil 2

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/5/5f/Resident_Evil_2.jpg/250px-Resident_Evil_2.jpg

This is to Resident Evil what Aliens is toAlien. Probably the finest Resi game ever made and the first cinematic adult game I was able to play and complete. I did play this before the original Resi, but even if I had done it the other way around I am sure I still would have been blown away. It ups the ante in everyway and has tons of replay value with 4 different scenarios and unlockables. Loved the homages to popular films. Puzzles were creative and engaging without being mind numbingly difficult. If any Resi game deserved a remake, it's this. A TRUE survival horror game.

2) Commander Keen Goodbye Galaxy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plXYaKRUEEA

Underrated platformer. Enjoyable, simple and very addictive even to this day. It's the only Keen game I have played, but I imagine the other ones are just as fun.

3) Metal Gear Solid: Tactical Espionage Action/Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater

http://dazcooke.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/metal-gear-solid.jpg

A revelation in video gaming. Pushed the PS1 to it's limits with it's hollywood style storytelling and innovative stealth based gameplay. That exciting theme tune should have been used for the sequels/prequels, too. To this day, I still can't work out why they'd conjure up badass like Snake and leave him out of the main story for the sequel? My mate's at school and I used to joke about how Snake was the baddest test tubed baby ever  I also included the 3rd game just because it's the definitive Metal Gear in it's even more in depth stealth game play and incredible story.

4) Streets Of Rage

http://www.games4win.com/up/streets-of-rage_1s.jpg

Surprised at how playable this is even today. I think this, along with Sonic the Hedgehog was the only game I would ever play when I had my Mega Drive. It's the definition of an arcade game. Smashing crooks, calling for back up and collecting weapons like a boss.

5) Fight Night Champion

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voZdvGt-tGc

When even non fight fans are talking to me about how much they like this game, you know you are onto a winner. Not just easily the best boxing game ever, but arguably the best sports title ever released. It's not got the biggest roster, but the hit detection and graphics are on next level stuff. THQ could learn a bit from EA..

6) Tekken 3

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9K9R3GOfFxU/SJ_rifSA-fI/AAAAAAAAAAU/-psJ8J6evh4/s320/tekken3_psx_eu.jpg

Played this at the arcade for hours after school. This game seemed so perfect that I honestly couldn't imagine owning it, and then they did, losing a few mates in the process. Awesome beat'em up.

7) Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61GFR6RESYL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

A gothic adventurer with an original twist and some of the best boss battles I have ever. It's also got a very engaging story that could easily be turned into a film. I never got bored of jumping between planes. I've not seen any video game that has that type of feature since. Really made the game exciting and unpredictable. Besides maybe Braid, it's the closets you can come to playing Inception.

8) Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfTS9GbO64s

Still arguably the best in the franchise with it's almost too good for words soundtrack. Only San Andreas can match Vice City for it's music. Also. Bikes.

9) Prince Of Persia: Sands Of Time

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCBCb2uNMPs

Almost like an antidote to Soul Reaver, this light, hugely enjoyable adventure game has aged pretty well imo. I think what was so surprising about the game was how easy it was to navigate the prince. He can do everything almost and the controls were just so seamless. Good sound too if you've got a 5.1 system.

10) Uncharted 2 Among Thieves

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d2/Uncharted_2_updated_PS3_logo.jpg
I really wanted to say Tomb Raider 2 mainly for nostalgic reasons but Uncharted 2 was just wicked. It's Tomb Raider with a fun story and easy to pick up game play. I've got love for Tomb Raider, but I could never complete any of them without doing the level skip cheat. This game works on all levels though.

Honourable mentions for Rollcage 2, Smackdown! Here Comes The Pain, LAPD Future Cop, Raptor and Cool Borders 3.

01. River City Ransom

02. Half Life

03. GTA II
The best GTA game for me, those gibberish voices still impress me.
& the violence was splendid.

04. Diablo II

05. Contra, Contra: Hard Corps
Anyone remembers Hard Corps for Sega Genesis, those psychedelic villains were so trippy, but the game was incredibly tough.

06. Most of the Castlevania games, especially Circle of the Moon, Aria Of Sorrow

07. Metal Slug - all parts

08. Zelda: A Link to the Past

09. Metal Gear Solid

10. Deus Ex

Few others that I love Gradius, Vietcong, Heretic II, Ocarina of time, Warcraft III, Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat, Super Metroid, Recoil

I love most of the beat-em-ups Double Dragon, Streets of Rage, Final Fight, etc..

I have only played the demo for System Shock II & I loved it.. never went around buying the game. Maybe I should.

Great list, Tact. HUGE fan of PS1 games from back in the day. You know, where 80% of the games were not generic 1st person shoot em ups.

That was the first console generation which had a huge leap forward from the last in that 3D was now viable and effective.

If we were doing a top 20 I'd definitely have RE 2 and Streets of Rage in mine. ;)

True, couldn't really have Tomb Raider prior to it. I think we might need to see another top 10 then Tact :)

Gotta agree with The Prestige, GTA: Vice City can't be matched in the soundtrack area. I think that game was one of the biggest contributors in my still-growing love for '80's music.Have you never turned on the radio before? It's the same music, and kind of ridiculous that you think that game is unmatched. Makes me think you've never played another game.

Well, you're sort of right, I don't play that many games, and I suppose I should have been more specific in saying that GTA: Vice City has maybe the best compilation soundtrack I've ever heard. I'm sure other games have original music that kicks ass, but I wouldn't know, from such a limited sample.

I had tried playing San Andreas for few hours, the missions kind of put me off.. Vice City had better missions, so did the previous 2D GTA games.

I use to like Pac-Man...does that count?

I think that some San Andreas missions have the edge over missions from any of the other GTA's, because some of them are just so damn funny. The mission where you have to torch the marijuana plants and then listen to Peter Fonda's rant about the government is hilarious.

San Andreas is my favourite GTA game. As someone who owns a few Miami Vice boxsets you'd think it'd be Vice City but San Andreas had one mahoosive advantage on the GTAs which had gone before - A proper 3D camera attached to the right analogue stick.

Mainly PS2 games for me, a couple of SNES games and Gameboy games. Still got my SNES and Gameboy, near 25 years old and still going strong.
I've still got my SuperGameboy too, that thing that plugs into the top of the SNES and you can play Gameboy on the TV.

10: Grand Theft Auto 3 (PS2)

9: Double Dragon (original Gameboy version)

8: Theme Park (love any version but PS2 version called Theme Park World was the best)

7: The Legend Of Zelda, A Link To The Past (SNES version)

6: Lego Star Wars 2 The Original Trilogy (PS2)

5: Lego Star Wars (PS2)

4: Grand Theft Auto, San Andreas (PS2)

3: SimCity (any version but loved the SNES version)

2: Gran Turismo 3 (PS2)

1: Super Mario Kart (original SNES version, not the other rubbishy ones that have been made since)

Nice list, Rodent. Although I have to say, if ever a series was overrated, it would have to be the Grand Theft Auto series. At least for me anyways. I just never got into the hype. What the hell is supposed to be so great about those games? I played them, and got bored too easily.

Metal Gear Solid series. Amazing solid story. Great characters, and character development. Fun game-play. Great music. Just... perfect.

Silent Hill series comes very close.

Forgot about Earthbound, and Eternal Darkness until I saw this thread. Badass games.
