View Full Version : Direct TV / DSL
Right now I have Comcast Digital Cable and Cable TV. I am moving soon, and the place where I am going to live at has Direct TV and DSL installed throughout.
I was wondering if I can get everyone's thoughts, comments, positives and negatives on having the dish (Direct TV) and DSL.
I'd appreciate it very much. :D
I don't have any experience with Direct TV, but you'll deffinetely be noticing a rather large dip in your download speeds with the DSL. Comcast had recently, within the past couple months, bumped the standard download speed to around 350kbs and kicked the upload to 30kbs. With DSL you'll be lucky to get 160k down and 15k up, though it will most likely (if you get Verizon) hover around 90k down and 12k up. Usually DSL gets merited with the "but it's always on, cable speeds fluctuate and go out often", but these days Comcast and most other cable ISPs have increased their bandwidth so that is no longer a problem. Basically, DSL blows now, which is why Verizon is pushing to roll out their fiber optic connections.
Just be glad you aren't forced to use a made up ISP like mine, which goes out constantly.
Thanks. I am going to see if Comcast can come and hookup their internet service for me after I move. I have had cable internet for over 5 years. and will not stand for slow service.
Well, DSL, in theory, is capable of Cable speeds. They even market it as 1.5mb down and 256k up, but it never reaches those speeds regardless of how close you are to the station. Verizon actually sent a friend of mine a letter in the mail saying he was recieving more bandwidth than he should be and that they were going to lower his speeds and instead they nearly tripled them.
If I had a choice I would without a doubt go with cable, until companies like Verizon do expand their fiber optic service.
