View Full Version : Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
I enjoyed it, but I've got some stuff to say.
I kinda got bored of Jay and Silent Bob. To me what made them so cool was that they were only in movies for spurts. A whole movie about them was funny, yes, but it was kinda boring. I wanted to see other characters. It's what I expected though.
Shannon Elizabeth is one perty lady.
I thought that whole girlgang thing was kinda lame. They shoulda found some other angle to work it in there.

i thought everything about this movie was awesome. :D i don't want to oversell it, but it might have been the funniest movie i've ever seen, period. it's really by and for the fans more than anything, so if you're not acquainted with the characters, plots, and whatnot from the previous four films you might have trouble finding about 50% of the movie funny, because so much of it is in jokes. but if you've seen the other view askew movies, you will definitely find this to be the funniest movie of the year. i can't believe how many laugh out loud moments there are during the course of the film. it's a total riot. it's as good as every crap adam sandler movie out there combined. it's really everything you'd expect it to be and more. one of the best things is the cast. this is the funniest all around cast every assembled on one screen. will ferrel, chris rock, affleck and damon, jon stewart. it's so awesome. the dialogue is good, and what's wrong with the girl gang? it's supposed to be funny. i want to see this movie again in the theaters really soon, and i'm sure i will. probably another time or two this weekend. like i said before, if you're a diehard kevin smith fan, you will no doubt go nuts over it.
I haven't seen this, but I wanted to chime in concerning Shannon Elizabeth: yeah, she is pretty, but I think she's headed in the wrong direction (judging by her appearance in J&SBSB). From what I've seen of her in American Pie, she looked pretty...and normal. In the previews for this flick, she looks like she's got a ton of makeup on...and, amazingly, her eyes look bigger. What the hell is going on with these chicks with huge eyes? I don't get it. They're everywhere.

she was wearing glasses in jay and silent bob. is that what you mean?

Well Brodieman, you are absolutely correct! With everything . With me being such a multi- Kevin Smith/Jay and Silent Bob fan I enjoyed Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back . I can't remember the last time I laughed so much like I did watching J&SBSB. I agree with you Brodieman all the way except how can you compare them with Sandler? J&SB are much funnier.
By the way Brodieman, with me and you being such J&SB/Kevin Smith fans....we should e-mail each other and or IM each other and talk. :D
Yeah, this movie was funny as hell.
But...That whole deal with the girls was retarded, so was the Planet of the Apes bit, I thought that was played. Shannon Elizabeth is a beautiful, beautiful woman. Girls with big, beautiful eyes are the best. Anyway, the gang deal was just stupid, except for Sean William Scott's cameo, which was great. I'm telling you, that guy needs to get in some better movies, because he's hella talented. But the whole chicks-walking-toward-the camera-in-slow-motion bit was lame, and I just rolled my eyes.

I was thinking that she looked better in J&SBSB than she did in American Pie 2. Perhaps that just doesn't come across on the TV as well as in the theater.
Naw, not talking about the glasses. Beautiful eyes are cool, but I hate eyes that look overly large. We're turning women into Powerpuff Girls. I'm more interested in people who look somewhat human. :)
Their films are always better when you're drunk. Shannon Elizabeth is smokin no matter what she wears!

man, how could you not find the planet of the apes spoof funny? that was one of my favorites. "we don't spank the monkey, the monkey spanks us" is now one of my alltime favorite lines. and randal running through the cornfield was priceless.
i can't believe we're debating shannon elizabeth's eyes. how could you even care about her eyes? :D geez.
jrs, my e-mail is:
[email protected]
that's one of my e-mail addresses, anyway.
I thought the apes spoof was week too. As was the girlgang thing. I get the feeling Smith didn't really want that matrix type wall thing either, but I might be wrong.
As for Shannon Elizabeth. I don't see anything wrong with her eyes. I find them lovely!:D Shes got one of the best faces in Hollywood. So pleasant to look at!!!:D

why do you guys pick out the one or two things you didn't like? didn't you find 99.99% of the movie hilarious? christ, i did.
I found like 85% of the movie hilarious. I laughed harder at American Pie.
Why not point out what I don't like? I'm not gonna say the whole movie was the greatest, funniest, coolest movie ever when its not. I rarely ever like all of a movie. This was no exception. Just because there were two good parts for every one bad part, doesn't mean those bad parts weren't there!:D

i'm just glad brodie, randal, dante, banky, holden and so many other of my favorite characters were there. it was such a great experience overall, i just can't imagine being choosy. also, it's great the movie got a lot of positive, or at worst, mixed reviews. a lot of people suspected it would get terrible reviews, but only a couple reviewers here and there were negative. what matters is the fans, and this is definitely the fans' movie. did anyone have any favorite scenes? :D by the way, i'm hopefully going to be seeing the movie again tonight. :D
For a signed mini-one sheet poster of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back send your ticket stub to:

They have to be a Friday night (August 24th) or Saturday night (August 25th) stub from the same the theater. Just found that out :(
Spoilers:
Favorite scenes for me would be when Jay was doing his spiel into the camera about the C.L.I.T.(don't think its apropriate to say that without the periods). There were a couple more, like when they flew into the window, or when they were trying to get passed the security guard. And then the very last scene, don't know how many people saw it, but Alanis Morisette(God) made her cameo. Not really funny, but I thought it was fitting.

by the way, knowing that smith credits are always funny, i stayed to see morisette's cameo. she shut the book on the "askewniverse".

Just the fact that every cast member from every Askew movie was in it was good enough. That whole Jason Biggs thing with not being able to live the pie thing down was hilarious. I'm not really giving anything away...it's funny no matter what. The Scooby Doo scene was kinda sorta funny. Doobie Snacks...where do they sell those!? I'm definetley buying this when it comes out, and I plan on seeing it again shortly. I took my nephew to see it, and he's only seen clerks so he only got some of the jokes. It's funny how they worked it so that it was the day Dante wasn't supposed to work and all. The whole gay suck my dick thing got old fast. I mean yeah it was their charecters, but still you can only do that so many times. Hey Kids, its Mark Hamill...LOL...
I probably will end up seeing this again Tuesday night. Even if you haven't seen all of the Askew movies, check this out then brush up with Mallrats, Clerks, Chasing Amy, & Dogma. :)

By the way, I went and saw the flick again, and I still enjoyed it quite a bit.
I crack up every time I see that guy carrying the beam (like in Mallrats) across the studio lot towards the end. I guess I'[m just easy to please in the comedy department.

no, you're not easy to please. if that were true, you would think adam sandler movies are the funniest things ever created (please don't tell me you like adam sandler movies) kevin smith movies are unlike most comedies, genuinely funny, and they DO make you think a little bit (no matter what anyone says). it takes a lot of pop culture savvy to appreciate jay and silent bob, the average idiot probably couldn't find it funny at all.
jrs-
thanks. :)
Adam Sandler movies are funny. Happy Gilmor is freakin' hilarious, and Big Daddy was nearly as good. Sorry.
BrodieMan
08-29-01, 11:49 AM
it's ok. i know people who think some adam sandler movies are funny, too. some of them were decent, but the waterboy was unforgiveably bad. no way you could ever say the waterboy was funny.
Big Daddy is mean spirited crap. So, for that matter, are all of Sandler's movies. I thought Kathy Bates was funny in the Waterboy, and Happy Gilmore had its moments, but Big Daddy? That's the WORST of his movies.
Are you kidding ? Big Daddy was hysterical. Yes Waterboy had its moments but that is funny you have to admit.
Mean spirited? How in the hell is that movie mean spirited? It's the funniest crap in the world. You just know Sandler and his friends have a blast making those movies. Oh, and it made $160 million -- so you're in the minority, bud. :)
Please direct all Adam Sandler-related replies to this thread from now on:

Kevin Smith's movies are funny, cause they are written and directed by HIM. He has the vision, and he speaks his mind to get it done the way he wants it done. He's not a tracer...:D If you ever think you're going to watch a Smith film and be able to laugh at a guy spitting milk out his nose, you're going to be in for a dissapointment. His films are deep-thinkin movies. Although I have never seen Mallrats, I am going to steer clear since ive heard its just not that good. All of his movies I have seen are dark comedies, and any idiot with an IQ of 3 would never understand them. Just like The Mexican...dark comedy that a lot of people in my town didn't like cause they didn't understand it.
So if you haven't really seen any of Smith's previous flicks might check em out before watching J&SBSB. You'll be lost on half of the jokes if you don't.

i agree totally, spdrcr. it's cool you saw the movie and liked it so much. i sent in my stubs... i wonder what the autographed poster will be like....

Why does everyone hink Mallrats was bad?? I loved it. I thought it was great.

I loved Mallrats and actually put it on my top 10 list for comedies. Granted, I realize most people don't enjoy it to that extreme, but I LOVED IT!
I must say that I dug Jay and Silent Bob... just not quite as much as some of his other flicks. I really appreciated all the 'in-jokes' throughout the film. It's fun to see someone create a movie targeted towards loyal fans, especially after screwing us over on the rerelease of the Dogma DVD :)
BrodieMan
08-31-01, 03:56 PM
yes! mallrats fans unite! :) well, you guys can probably tell i loved it. what an awesome movie. i don't know why people said it was so stupid. it had the funny conversations, in-jokes, occasional sight gags, and awesome characters everyone would expect from a kevin smith movie. of course, someone will show up and act like they hate it and give 1000 reasons why just because people on this site love to shoot us mallrats fans down :bawl: oh, well, who cares? :D :D :D
BrodieMan
08-31-01, 03:59 PM

The crude humor and wacky humor is awesome, something that we don't get in modern day cinema.
Kevin Smith is a comedic genius...nuff said.

Loll, I wasn't implying that I jerk off horses, but I'm saying, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what to do. Tom Green is getting credit for being talented, when all it really is is a willingness to grope horse c-ck. So, what to make of him?

It wasnt as good as dogma or clerks, but it was still the funniest movie this summer. I espically ;like the scene where there all dressed up in leather, too many movies have that for no reason of all, and it was good to look at too!

09-09-01, 01:37 PM
The only reason why you may find this to not be as funny as Smith's previous works is because his previous films only had Jay and Bob in the movie for moments at a time. Giving them a whole 2 hours and 10 minutes to talk about gays and sucking dicks and all that kinda gets old, but its still funny coming from them.
I enjoyed this movie and was rollin practically the whole time. :)

I would say to completley understand this movie you need to see Mallrats, Chasing Amy, & Clerks. Dogma wasn't really a big one for this, but see it anyways, hilarious.

Chasing Amy is the only one of the Smith films on Criterion, and its pretty cool. Clerks, is alright, doesn't really have any specials on it.
ryanpaige
09-10-01, 03:06 PM
Clerks has a commentary, but they apparently did it with one microphone, so they had to keep passing it around if someone wanted to talk. It also has deleted scenes and some other things. So, it's not exactly a barebones release, either.

09-10-01, 03:25 PM
True, but its not as packed as the other films are. Which sucks, cause anyone thats worked in the convenince store or video store area can relate totally to Clerks. All the questions that Randall tells Dante that people ask, like a walk down memory lane to me.

09-10-01, 10:30 PM
It's not completely uncool, but it is so out-of-character with the rest of the movie. It's jarring, and I don't like the fact that he kills off the character after we've spent 90 minutes or so getting attached to him. It just didn't fit, and I think the movie is better without it.
But it is well-shot.
BrodieMan
09-10-01, 11:43 PM
yeah, of course the movie would be better off without it, that's why they left it out. i was just wondering if it was at least interesting to watch even though it didn't fit in or have any place in the story whatsoever... kinda makes you wonder why he put it in there, but i'm dying to see it nonetheless.

that would be nice. look forward to the new animated clerks movie that's supposed to be coming out in the next year or two.
by the way, is anyone a fan of the jay and silent bob soundtrack? i just got it (i know i'm late) but it's so awesome. not only are there clips from the movie (my favorite part) but the music rules, too. there is a really good song by marcy playground, and of course the new bloodhound gang song that just plain kicks @$$. all the stuff is good on it. i could just go on and on.

i love everything about this cd! my god, it's good. the thomas rusiak song is so cool. i wanna hear more by that guy, now. and somehow it fits the movie so perfectly. i mean all the songs do. i hate it when a song sounds like it doesn't really belong on a soundtrack and you know they're just trying to jerk you around and make a quick buck. i can't get that marcy playground song out of my head! christ, the lyrics are so insanely clever. and i like stroke 9, now, too. i need to get their album.

I'm exactly the same way with the Marcy Playground song. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've listened to that song.

My first Kevin Smith movie was Chasing Amy. It's a great movie, so honest.
Dogma was my second Kevin Smith movie and I enjoyed it. It was funny. Some of it worked. Some of it didn't. But I admired its ambition. And Kevin Smith seemed to know his religious mumbo-jumbo.
So you could call me a fan. I enjoyed Jay and Silent Bob's limited screen time in Chasing Amy and they made me laugh in Dogma but come on, no matter how much of a Kevin Smith you are, you have to recognise how self indulgent and how terrible JASBSB really is.
I laughed a few times in JASBSB, usually at the celebrity cameos. I grew tired of the homophobic jokes and toilet humour. What was most annoying was the attempts at self-depreciation. When characters looked at the audience questioning why they were watching this crap, it was as if Kevin Smith was looking down at us. HAHA! The biggest joke in my movie is that you paid to buy a ticket.
Jay, while not a lead, does his best. Silent Bob is the more enduring character however. Shannon Elizabeth is the love interest. Elizabeth may impress some of the men in the audience but she has the acting ability of a labrador. She smiles way too often. It was grating. I much prefer Elisa Dushku in the looks department anyway.
What's worrying is that Kevin Smith has a fanbase to suggest he is one of the brightest things in Hollywood. He's not. His direction is rubbish but he admits to this. But now I'm beginning to question his writing ability. What else has he to offer? Let's hope he goes back to more personal movies for his next effort to silent the ghost of this one.
You know what? I totally, unequivocally disagree with everything you just said. ;)
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is one of Kevin Simth's best movies so far.
Those 2 normally make any movie they're in more enjoyable so it's about time they had their own movie.

Ugh! His worst effort to date!
I mean, I generally dislike teenage movies - American Pie, etc - and will steer away.
However, Smith's previous efforts were different, relying on a witty script, humorous pop culture references, and true-to-life issues etc.
Unfortunately, the main defect in this dismal movie was the fact that the characters were not well grounded enough to carry the entire movie, and work more effectively in short doses.
All I could do was simply sit there and shake my head, while bombarded with an assortment of 4 letter words
On a final note, Shannon Elizabeth cannot act!
I almost felt embarassed, particularly for her, when watching her performance! :furious:
How can anyone put down Jay and Silent Bob?????? One of the best comic duos in movie history if I must say so myself.

I thought the movie was a step down, too. It was funny, but Mallrats was funnier, in my opinion. The words "c*ck" and "f*ck" stop being funny when uttered for the 90th time. The whole thing got pretty old. The bit with James Van Der Beek and Jason Biggs was hilarious, though.

That may be, but I must agree that there are too many HUGE eyes today. It looks ridiculous. Anyway, welcome to MovieForums.com. :)

It's true they use those words too much.....but I am not lookin at the duo in that way. It's just that they seem like a great team. They're hysterical together. Yes, other films are funnier. As for JASBSB, to me it's (in my opinion) is funny. Hey , different strokes for different folks.
Didn't Jay get arrested for doing heroin the other week? Whooops!
I like Clerks best and Chasing Amy too. Strikes Back wasn't as good as some of their other stuff even though it had some pretty funny scenes IMHO.

Bought this yesterday and watched it last night, I love this movie.
I think that Dogma was Smith's weakest movie of the five he directed under View Askew. I'm, of course, only saying that because I don't want him coming to my house and beating the sh*t out of me.
My first Kevin Smith movie was Chasing Amy. It's a great movie
Chasing Amy is Smith's worst movie. It was boring, and all that Lesbian crap being talked about made me sick.
And Kevin Smith seemed to know his religious mumbo-jumbo.
He obviously knew nothing about Christianity. That is for sure.

It displayed a nice balance of romance and comedy.

Chasing Amy was Smith's most serious movie. I thought it was great. Kevin Smith is a Catholic, just in case you want to throw that one around. :D
If I had to rank them (which I'm going to do now) I would rank them like this:
1. Chasing Amy
2. Clerks
3. Mallrats
4. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
5. Dogma
Of the ones I've seen, I thought Mallrates was the funniest. Anyway, I think Smith was raised a Catholic, but it doesn't seem that he's still a Catholic. I have some gripes with him, but nothing truly major, because, even if he goes too far, his intention, I think, is obviously to poke fun at organized religion, and not God Himself.
Fez Wizardo
02-28-02, 11:37 AM
but surely if you're poking the fun out of organised religion you're poking the fun out of god, as god is the belief of those people.
Absolutely not! Mistaking Christians for Christianity is an all-too common mistake, it seems. People discredit Christianity, for example, because some Christians do things in God's name...even if it's not consistent with His teachings. Organized religion and God are not the same thing. You can poke fun at some of the ridiculous things the Catholic Church does without really poking fun at God, though, like I said, it is possible to go far with even the former.

Although this thread is supposed to be about Jay and Silent Bob, I didn't see much about it. Just wanted to say the movie was a lot funnier than I expected. I was really turned off by Jay in "Chasing Amy."--His misogeny was just too harsh and I took it a little personally, but in J&SB, he softened it with a little "I'm stupid, so don't take me seriously" humor, so I could really enjoy his idiocy.
Did a great job keeping Silent Bob silent until his two big lines--the rant about the sign on the back of the truck, and the legal threat. Very funny. Good voice, too.

Don't know [I]Clerks...How long's it been out?
Clerks was released in 1994, but it's a major Indy film. I think Smith ended up borrowing from friends and such to finance it, so it's not something you'd be likely to have seen promoted in theaters anyway. Anyway, its a cult classic of sorts I suppose, but as vulgar as any of his other movies; I haven't seen it all, though. Just bits and pieces...the discussion over the Death Star Independent Contractors was hilarious, though.

From the disc’s Main Menu go to the 'Cast & Crew' section where you highlight the menu entry for Jason Mewes’ biography. Then press the 'Up' arrow key on your remote control and the word 'Balls' appears on the screen. Sorry for the late bumping of an old topic, but as I just enrolled on this site today, I feel justified.
I just had to say that I am a die hard Kevin Smith fan, who loved all of his preveious movies (favourites being Chasing Amy and Clerks). The first time I watched JSBSB I didn't felt a little dissapointed, but after having watched it a few times, I can only say that it is just as good as the other movies. It grows on you, especially all the refferences to the Jersey Triology:D And the entire Miramax part is just hillarious. I have a friend who is really into Wes Cravens early stuff and hates his latest films, and when I showed him the Wes Craven scene, he could hardly breathe from laughing:)
So, if you're a Kevin Smith fan that didn't really like JSBSB the first time you saw it, give it another shot, it might just work
PS. My favourite quote from the movie:
[Jay] What the F*ck is the internet?

I love all of Kevin Smiths movies. I saw clerks a long time ago, when it was first released on VHS. Even then I thought JASB were the best characters in the move. Mallrats and Chasing Amy were cool, I remember saying to myself when I saw them, "Theres just not enough JASB".
Then I saw Dogma in the theatre...WOW!!!! At that point I became the die hard KS fan. That was a great week for movies, I saw Dogma, Being John Malcovich, and Bringing Out the Dead.
I thought JASB SB, was very funny, slow at times, not perfect, but still. There just aren't many movies I can recall weeks, months later, and start laughing. I love the scene after you meet their mothers, and the song Jay is singing. I laugh everytime I think of that. Or when they're in the studio lot and Jay is saying, "you've never done this too a woman" and starts acting like he's making out, then switches to a little homosexual act...and acts "uh...no...I mean" and acts the "straight" man again. Or the whole cup on the dong thing in the hamburger joint. Oh well I could go on and on and on......

I thought the movie was terrible but funny. All the characters and stuff were pretty cool. But I only really liked the beginning and the middle. Towards the end is when I got bored and it sucked. Mallrats, Dogma, and Clerks is 10 times better. K Smith is one of my favorites even though I think he should have never done J&SBSB.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, while completely hilarious, is certainly not in the same league as his films prior to it. Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, and let us never forget Dogma are all superior and I have to disagree with people who think Jay and Silent Bob are the best characters in some of Kevin Smith's films. Second best maybe, but I love Dante and Randall, and Jason Lee steals the show in both Mallrats and Chasing Amy. The entire ensemble of Dogma is amazing, so it is hard to choose. At the end of the day, I think Jay and Silent Bob are snootchie bootchies, but the other characters that come from the mind of Kevin Smith have so much more going on.

I haven't seen this yet but it's on my list of movies to see.
Recently I saw Catch and Release (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0395495/). I found it interesting to watch Kevin Smith in something else, something in which he speaks a LOT more.
Of all the movies made in the Silent Bob and so on list, Dogma is my fav.
J&SBSB is my least favourite out of all the jersey films. Not to say its bad, i just think that the humour in the other is a lot more witty.
My order would go:
1) Clerks (Salsa shark, we're gonna need a bigger boat!)
2) Mallrats (Should I call you Logan, Weapon X?)
3) Clerks 2 (Goodbye Horses ^^)
4) Chasing Amy (Fingercuffs!)
5) Dogma (Hey Big Bird! Ready to play the counting game?)
6) Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (Planet of the Apes Spoof)
That list isn't final. The ranking of Clerks 2, Chasing Amy and Dogma could be mixed up I think.
PS: Didn't realise Kevin Smith was in Die Hard 4.0

Not many comedies are consistently funny throughout, but I think JASBSB acheived that here, which is especially impressive because I always found Jay And Silent Bob to be Kevin Smith's weakest characters.
