Even if I had money, are you nuts?????????? You gotta be totally out of your mind to spend that much on DVDs.

I already own a lot of those, I was thinking of buying one of those huge lots on ebay for similar prices but I already own too many to make it worthwhile costwise. I could of course sell the duplicates but I dont really sell stuff so it seems like too much hassle.

As for why someone would buy it, I am a pretty avid dvd collector, and the Criterion Collection is probably the best set that you can buy. Many of the greatest directors of all time have all their best movies exclusive (unless you count crap foreign releases) to Criterion. If I didnt already own a bit over 100 of them, I would snatch it up ina second. Ive already probably spent pretty close to $5000 just getting the ones I have got, of course that includes a couple of higher-priced out of print dvds.

I also have my own handful of Criterion DVDs. Naturally the CC contains great films by great directors so each DVD has a certain quality to them.

But to spend over $5,000 at once on something to where you could do something worthwhile with it..... I mean come on now.

I am a HUGE movie/DVD fanatic and on a lucky day back in the good ol' days, the limit for me at once was at the most a boxed set for $70-100.

Ive always been a collector, of various things, (action figures, comics, women's clothing) and ive found its a lot more satisfying to do it piece by piece. ;)

I don't own any CC DVDs.

But i was going purchase my first one in Dec when Fritz Lang's M comes out on CC or i was going buy Brazil when it becomes cheaper (As if).

Spending 5,000 on DVDs at once is crazy! I could get a pretty decent Plasma HDTV for that much. I'm going pass on this offer.

SpoOkY
10-24-04, 10:17 AM
......yeah me too, I'll pass on spending that much money on somebody else's favourite movies. I'd much prefer to slowly choose my own collection that I love and know everything about. Just my thoughts :)

No. As they are out-of-print, they'd have to add a couple G's if all the OOP titles were included too. They sell for hundreds of dollars each on eBay and the like.

Crazy.

I only own three from them, Rebecca and Straw Dogs, which are both out of print and Contempt.

Holden once explained to me why each Criterion DVD was so expensive, because they have to buy the rights to distribute the films from the studios, but still $30-$40 for one movie is too much. Unless of course you find them cheaper, usually from ebay.

I haven't purchased The Grand Illusion, so I can't attest to its quality (though I have rented it before, and I don't recall being unimpressed by the transfer), but The Rules of the Game is fantastic, and is also a gi-normous 2-disc package with lots of great extras. It's a must-have.

Di Sica's cut (Terminal Station) is much better than Selznick's (Indescretion of an American Wife). Selznick's version completely excises the emotional core of Jennifer Jones' character. If you liked the short version (73 mins.), you have to see Di Sica's (89 mins.). Fifteen minutes cut out of a film that isn't quite an hour and a half long to begin with is actually quite drastic. Especially the choices Selznick made.

And whaaaaa???? you own a *gasp* PTA film ??!!!!!

Two. I also have Punch-Drunk Love on DVD.

Over at the Criterion Collection's own website, www.criteriondvd.com (http://www.criteriondvd.com), they're having a special sale of four of their OOP titles - while supplies last: Rebecca, Spellbound, Notorious and Straw Dogs.

You can choose what you want...out of the Criterion Collection. With the 10 for a penny deal, you get such classics as Legally Blonde II, and The Santa Clause IX.

Oh, $5,000, eh? Let me go pull off some 20's and 10's off the ol' money tree...

or you can just bend over and I can pull out.

Whichever you prefer.

Let's be honest: Who in (Insert your religous god's name here)'s name would buy this? And let's be practical on this one. There's only certain films I like from them; I wouldn't waste my well-earned money on that. Sorry, but that's just me.

The Adventures of Antoine Dionel boxed set (The 400 Blows, Stolen Kisses, Bed & Board, Love on the Run and "Antione & Colette").
Does the Box-set actually include The 400 Blows, because it's an Out of Print title, isn't it?

Does the Box-set actually include The 400 Blows, because it's an Out of Print title, isn't it?

Their original disc of The 400 Blows is out-of-print. But yes, it is included in the Doinel boxed set. As I said. As are all the other films I mentioned. Plus an extra disc that has an 18-minute Truffaut short called "Les Mistons" (The Mischief Makers) that preceeds 400 Blows by a couple years, and "Working with François Truffaut" a 2003 44-minute documentary that includes interviews with his sometimes co-writers Claude de Givray & Bernard Revon. That bonus disc also has a bunch of interviews and documentary snippets of Truffaut talking about his work over the years. There's also a 72-page booklet reprinting many essays and interviews.

The Adventures of Antione Doinel and Cassavetes Five Films are easily their two best boxed sets yet. And Gilliam's Brazil remains their best edition of a single film...though last year's The Battle of Algiers is pretty frippin' spectacular too.

Yeah, somehow I haven't yet acquired 81/2. Just an oversight of circumstance. I'll correct it one day. I did buy it as a gift for somebody once...damn, what was I thinking? I should have kept it! It's a good two-disc set of a great movie.

The discs I got for Christmas gifts this year were Rififi, I Vitelloni, Fanny & Alexander (boxed set with the theatrical and TV versions as well as a third supplemental disc), The Lower Depths (Renoir & Kurosawa versions) and Short Cuts - the last of which I couldn't resist even though I have it on LaserDisc too (a few new supplements on the DVD I just had to have).

Yes, definately. But as far as Fellini films are concerned, I prefered La Strada and Amarcord over 8½, but as a DVD itself, 8½ is the best one.

Not got so many, I have to get them shipped over from the USA to Blighty. I find myself wandering around UK stores and just buying lots of "normal" dvds here.

I have got:

Armageddon (for the wife, not me. I decided if she wanted it I would at least get the CC edition)
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Shock Corridor
The Life Aquatic
Naked Lunch ;)
The Last Temptation of Christ

Waiting for the Cassavetes boxset to arrive.

I now also have Seven Samurai and Robocop to add to my list above. I am trying to get a copy of Straw Dogs but aren't too keen on paying silly Ebay prices for it.

**edit**

Got it now

I only own Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, Alphaville, Videodrome and...oh, I think that's it.

I'm planning on getting 8 1/2, La Strada, High & Low (all of which I own "regular" versions of) and that Kurosawa box set (have only seen Seven Samurai and The Hidden Fortress of that set).

Hey! So, I love the criterion collection as much as anybody, but I'm just wondering if anyone out there has the same misgivings about it lately as I do.
For one thing, they sure releasing a LOT of movies lately. It seems that every couple of weeks, a few new titles get released, which I think is fantastic, especially since now that they've exhausted more of the better known classics, they're digging deeper into the more obscure stuff (as many DVD production companies are doing these days, I suppose), but sometimes I wonder if all of this stuff is really that important, or classic. I mean, there are the obvious ones like Armageddon, The Rock, the Beastie Boys Video Anthology, and Chasing Amy, which are more or less a mystery to me. But also, I feel that they also make some pretty odd choices that aren't patently silly. For example, the fact that the last three (which means all but one) of Wes Anderson's movies got not only Criterion releases, but pretty much instantaeous Criterion releases. Shouldn't there be some sort of non-Criterion dvd out there of The Life Aquatic? The movie's fun, and all, but how important is this movie, really? Is the Darjeeling Limited going to be released right onto Criterion also? I definitely am very excited about several of their latest releases, like "If...," "Night on Earth," "Mala Noche," and "Solo con tu pareja." But, do we really need these sorts of what seems to me like unneccessary attention paid, sometimes to movies that already exist on dvd, when there are so many wonderful movies that have barely gotten vhs releases, let alone dvd. It seems like a kind of crime that The Royal Tennenbaums would get an instantaneous release and House of Games will get a the Criterion treatment even with a DVD of it already existing, while films like "Red Desert" barely exist on tape....
Anyone else have any confusion as to the Criterion gang's decisions in the past few years?
