Hmm... you actually started an ‘appreciation thread‘. Nice collection, it yours? And I wouldn't call my self and admirer or collector of anime, I just don't have a strong opinion on it one way or another. I do enjoy watching the cartoons/films though.

I've never actually read any Manga, but I don't have any real reason not to have read any, I just haven't. From what I've heard from my friends who are Anime gods, there really aren't any series that are anywhere near as good as their Manga counterparts. I hate to beat my trump card to death, but apparently the Manga for Berserk is phenomenal.
Speaking of such, I'd like to read the Manga of Oldboy. God damn I love that movie.

The Berserk manga is okay. Personally I thought the story arc told in the anime was far and away the best part of the Berserk storyline so that's one where I'd say the comic doesn't really offer that much over the show (other than being twice as long and offering a bit more closure on the cliffhanger ending of the anime.) The whole concept is pretty much derivative of the action subgenre started in Fist of the Northstar, though, so you might give that manga a try too (it's pretty good. Lots of exploding heads.)
I haven't heard anything on the Oldboy manga, but with the millions of other untranslated manga series out there I wouldn't hold my breath for a licensed translation. Still, it's not unheard of for something like that to be picked up by some fly-by-night online fan group, and if I hear anything I'll let you know.
Really one of the main things I like about manga is is that it varies much more in terms of style and subject matter (than anime does.) That's not to say there's not plenty of cliche'd manga out there too but anime has a pretty much narrowly defined audience in Japan (mostly kids and social outcasts), so it's very rare for anything new or groundbreaking. So while I think Berserk is a pretty okay example of anime, I wouldn't recommend the manga; there's just so much more to choose from.
Nice to see theres someone on the boards who knows their stuff (I admittedly aren't anything close to an expert on Anime, but I still like it). Just curious, what would be your most recommended series or film?

For anime?
The best OAV series is definitely Giant Robo. Weird show. Very melodramatic. Interesting Anachronistic style, clever writing, and the animation quality rivals anything on film.
My favorite t.v. anime was Miyazaki's Future Boy Conan series from the seventies. Sort of a more slapstick precursor to Laputa and Nausicaa. The best one might actually be the adaptation of the classic Sanpei Shirato manga, Ninja Bugeicho. It's unfortunately very old and obscure and nearly impossible to find, but the one episod I've seen was very interesting.
I really like Katsuhiro Otomo's stuff and my favorite movie is Akira. He's aldo done some shorts in a handful of interesting anthology films, like Robot Carnival, Neo Tokyo, and most noteably, Memories. I'm really looking forward to seeing Steam Boy. Isao Takahata's films are all worth seeing too, starting with a very early (late sixties) fantasy/adventure called Horus: Prince of the Sun, but also his later Studio Ghibli films like Grave of the Fireflies, Only Yesterday, Pom Poko, and My Neighbors the Yamadas.
I also really enjoyed Ninja Scroll, Dagger of Kamui, Wings of Honneamise and Jin Roh, and Arcadia of My Youth.
Some favorites that are just fun, competant genre entries are the Gundam 0079 movies (also the Z Gundam t.v. series), Miyazaki's Sherlock Hound, Gunbuster, Dragonball (all the story arcs before Dragonball Z), 8-Man, and Macross. I'm sure there are plenty that I'm forgetting too.
You have some Anime that you like to share with the other MoFos then pile it up in this thread.
Alrighty...let me add a little to your piles. :)
Inuyasha is the current favorite in my house...as I said in the ‘anime hate’ thread...I tape it for my daughter (adult swim) and have bought the first two movies. It’s just fun (and funny) fantasy. I’ve heard the third movie is really good and has more of my favorite character in it, so I’m buying whenever it comes out.
The first anime I got into was the Sailor Moon series...as I said (a long time ago) in that ‘hate thread’, my daughter really liked it, and at a time when there weren’t any strong girl figures on tv...so we’d watch it and talk about things afterwards. It will always be a sentimental favorite for me.
Here are some favorites...
Movies
Spirited Away
Millennium Actress
Tokyo Godfathers
Grave of the Fireflies
Ah My Goddess – The Movie
Inuyasha the Movie: Affections Touching Across Time
InuYasha the Movie 2: The Castle Beyond the Looking Glass
Sailor Moon R and S - The Movie’s
Castle in the Sky
Kiki’s Delivery Service
Cardcaptor Sakura - The Movie
Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust
Series
Inuyasha
Rurouni Kenshin
Cardcaptor Sakura
Gundam Wing
Outlaw Star
Tenchi Muyo
Ronin Warriors
My daughter also likes Case Closed.

Thanks for the update. We watched The Cat Returns a couple of weeks ago and really liked it. We'll have to look out for the other two. Since linespalsy also mentioned Nausicaa, I'll have to look for it in the manga section.
Along with InuYasha, another manga my daugther likes is Magic Knight Rayearth and MKR 2. I put a stop to her reading Ceres though...maybe in a couple of years she'll be mature enough, but right now...no way.

Just got the latest Inu-Yasha Movie (3) and I loved it! The animation isn't as sophisticated as Steamboyor Spirited Away...but it's story is solid, interesting, has alot of action/sword play and strong characters that also drive the story. Both Inuyasha and Sesshomaru are two of the coolest characters written. I could easily see this being made as a live action/CGI (ala..Star Wars) movie.
Also...
Fruits Basket has become a favorite lately also. There's only 4 DVD's, which both my daughter and I LOVE (great characters, and it's funny, sweet and touching)...and my daughter is now hooked on the manga.

My son gets the manga and I record the anime for him every saturday night. It took me awhile to like the drawing style...sort of remiinded me a little of Dragonball Z's chunky style....but I love imitating Luffy now. I tell my kids I want them to approach their homework the same way Luffy embraces life. Of course I get a "MOoooom!". :D

I don't like Chobits. Although I haven't seen the anime, I've read the manga which is basically the same thing as far as I've been told. But it starts out very funny, has all these great allusions to darkness, but the way each of the minor characters fates are resolved and the eventual ending are poor beyond belief. It's like going to a concert where the opening band are really good, and you're thinking, hey this is pretty cool, and then the main attraction come out and totally suck. I had a better analogy but I forgot it.

The only semi-recent anime series I saw was Satoshi Kon's "Paranoia Agent." Admirers of his feature films (Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers) will probably really enjoy this series (or at least parts of it), and for what it's worth, I probably would have hail'd it as "Awesome!" if I'd seen it three years ago (before I converted to the one true novelty faith: Turkish Superhero Cinemism).

Can you believe half the national back-catalogue got melted down for it's silver content? Someone should chop their arms off. (While making that 'zing!' noise).

Anyone seen the anime flick Barefoot Gen? It's a 'tragi-comedy' based around the aftermath of Hiroshima. Got a copy, just not sure if it's gonna edify me more than the accounts from the time. Is it sublime? Or just some bizarre scorched-earth goofery??

Oh man, yet another fan. Then you too known the terrifying might of Spiderman's eyebrows (and the cigarrette burns in his rusty slaptrap of a spidermobile).
----
On Barefoot Gen, it's based on a vintage 1970s Shounen Jump manga, so don't expect much subtlety. As you might expect from a comic/movie aimed at preteen boys on this subject, it's morally didactic and features a lot of over-the-top emotional content (shouting, heart-renching blood-and-guts, speed lines in the background whenever someone says something important) mixed - a bit jarringly at times - with playful jocular humor (kids saying funny things, playing pranks on adults etc.). The movie is pretty true to the comic (complete with some uninspired-but-competent 80s-style animation), and both are throughoughly watchable/readable as melodrama, but to this 20-something westerner it all seemed like the kind of sentimentality that cheapens real history. I may be missing out on something though, judging from the amount and diverse sources of accolades Gen has been showered with over the years in both East and West. None other than America's most widely respected manga scholar (and rightly so), Frederik L. Schodt put out several translated-volumes of the Manga, with a very generous introduction by Art Spiegelman (perhaps as a nod to the the autobiographical status of Gen - Keiji Nakazawa, the author, was himself a survivor of the Hiroshima bombing).
By a series of strange coincidences, the first time I saw the Gen movie was back to back with Shohei Imamura's excellent cinematic tracking of the same events through the life of a community of survivors; and the first time I read the manga was back to back with Gary Panter's exellently bizarre Jimbo in Paradise (both Jimbo and the first volume of Gen end with a nuclear blast and a flaming horse to similar effect in this otherwise completely different comics). I think it would be most edifying, in terms of seeing how movies play on emotions, to view the Imamura film back to back with Gen, with an eye to how they each consider the explosion. It doesn't matter which you start with.

If only! I just caught a 'local myth' turkish epic one night. A channel was running a series of weekly documentaries on lesser-known national film-styles, and each doc was followed by a couple of example films. I'd pay some silver to see more tho ;).

I just started watching this and it's pretty cool. I was always a bit weary to get into Tv anime because all the characters seemed too much like Pokemon (I really hate that animation style). But having seen Paprika, I decided to check out everything he's ever made. I have (but haven't yet watched) Tokyo godfathers and am downloading Perfect blue and Millennium actress...very high expectations for all 3 films. Paprika was just insane...in a good way.
Naturally, I love most Studio Ghibli films, Akira, Ghost in the shell...I'm a little surprised there aren't that many (good) full feature anime films for adults...this particular film form holds so much potential....maybe all the really interesting anime is on Tv? Can anyone recommend some? I've heard good things about Elfen Lied and Serial Experiments Lain. I've also bookmarked Hellsing (although the animation doesn't look very promising, the plot and execution intrigued me)...I've checked out Cowboy Beebop but found it to be too short to to spark any real interest (although Paranoia agent episodes are of the same length...)...don't like the looks of the animation on Neon Genesis. It's supposed to be one of the best shows ever...is that really true? Because I really can't stand those big blobs of sweat and moronic attempts at comedy...

I liked Paprika less whn I saw it for the second time. I really don't like the director's other films, either. 'Perfect Blue' is an adolescent, confused thriller (which I assume people only like because it's anime) and Millennium Actress is the most confusing, disjointed, unsatisfying thing I've ever seen. Like Paprika, it is beautiful, though.
Paprika's storyline is really all absolute rubbish. Complete nonsense, as with a lot of anime, I find. But it's so trippy and imaginative. The surreal bits are amazing.

Well, nearly all Ghibli is amazing - Totoro and Spirited Away, as Ashley mentioned. And Princess Mononoke, as Revenant mentioned (although, to me, it's Miyazaki's weakest).
Grave of the Fireflies is the best anime ever, I think. It's wonderful and depressing.
Akira is superb, too. Really, really superb.
Ghost in the Shell is terrible. It looks lovely, and the action is sweet, and it has breasts in it (isn't it odd that most animes have breasts in?) but it has a terrible script and a pretentious, nonsense story.
The end!

I don't see what any adult could possibly see in Totoro. It's probably the worst Miyazaki I've seen. It was clearly made for preschoolers. Not to mention that I really resent the patriarchal "values" it tries to promote (women should be quiet and subservient). And there's absolutely no story there. Some kids move into a house, they find a funny creature. That's it. :|

Man, Totoro is a family film. It's not aimed at any age group specifically - anyone can watch, and anyone can enjoy it. Anyone with half an open mind, anyway.
It's the most joyous movie ever, animated or not. It just oozes charm. Every frame is beautiful, and it's cute, funny, and genuinely the most cheerful film ever made.
You saying it's aimed at pre-schoolers reminds me of video games fans saying Nintendo games are kiddy, and Carmegeddon (a game where you mow down pedestrians) is mature, when it's exactly the opposite.

All Miyazaki films are family films. However, as opposed to Totoro, Howl's moving castle for example, is an entertaining, family film with a great story and beautiful animation. Compared to such a film (and his other works such as Princess Mononoke or Nausicaä), Totoro really does seem to be intended for small children...Miyazaki has definitely made better films, both visually and story wise...:\

I'm not going to argue the hell out of this. I just don't see why Totoro's story is bad. It's simple. There's a difference. Princess Mononoke has arguably the most complicated and epic story, but it's one of his weakest films. I prefer things like Totoro and Spirited Away to his more epic films. Teletubbies is Tinky Winky, La-La, Dipsy and Po prancing around a meadow, eating custard, dancing, and mincing around with red handbags.
Totoro is a touching tale (ohh, the alliteration!) about childhood, imagination, growing up and big fluffy animals.
I'll quote Roger Ebert, because I am a nob:

Just a perhaps-thought-provoking bit of trivia since both Totoro and Grave of Fireflies have been mentioned on this page: they were originally released as a double feature (with Totoro playing first, I believe).

I enjoyed Death Note up to a point. My son turned me on to it. He insists on watching it only in Japanese with English subtitles. He says the ones with English dubbed in have terrible voice actors.
I tend to agree with most Anime, with a few exceptions. Gasarake has a decent dub, as does Lain. For the most part, though, they tend to be pretty bad.

Neon Genesis Evangelion. It's often regarded as one of the greatest (if not, THE greatest) anime of all-time. And it actually has a pretty good dub.
I also like Hayao Miyazaki's films, such as Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. Isao Takahata's Grave of the Fireflies takes the cake though for being the best anime movie. For me. :)

Any REBORN! fans out there?
Is anyone up on fan subs? I know they aren't legitment and there are licensing issues, but a lot of genuinely good shonen aren't aired in the U.S. Plus it takes too long for the dubbing, Id rather read the subtitles than wait two weeks, for an Americanized version of something made in Japan.

Death Note was pretty cool, the actions and script was well thought out and had some really good twists in there.
I also prefer English subs because the Japanese voice actors have so much more emotion. The English voice actors tend to be very flat or overdo it. I hate how they butcher up the names, I cringe everytime I hear it.

I haven't watched Hunter X Hunter but read a lot of it back in the height of my manga-reading days. The anime stops after the Greed Island story, right? Probably for the best as the comic seems to have stalled out for the last several years on the current story + the author's apparent lack of interest/illness/whatever is keeping him from meeting deadlines. I think the part that I liked about it was that sometimes the protagonists can be real dicks in that manga. Like, the protagonists of most manga (especially little-boy manga) are dicks anyway, but in that one they just are and don't make a huge deal about convoluted back story (to make it ok for them to be dicks -- ooh tragic past wah wah) and stuff. They just are. Not sure if that's true, just an impression I had while reading it (and a lot of other manga), where I would gradually come to realize I hated everyone, but it took a while longer with that one. Anyway it's a fun read, I especially like some of the villians, imaginative/original fight-mechanics/super-powers and some decent artwork (I recall it not using much [any?] screen-tone-type fx, which is nice). Later on, in typical Yoshihiro Togashi fashion it progresses into laziness.
If you liked Death Note you might also try Gantz, it's a bit more trashy but also a bit more wild and unpredictable. I liked Gantz a lot. Wouldn't mind catching up on that one, kind of miss my addiction to bad manga sometimes.
Im not a Anime fan to be honust, ive seen a few Guyvour and thought it was ok. But I borrowed Afro Samuri off my brother in law really loved it! Also the game looks awesome too.

Did the second season of Afro Samurai air yet? Thought it looked good, my only complaints were that it was a bit short and Samuel L. Jackson gets really annoying.

Tales From Earthsea was a steaming pile of dung compared to the other Ghiblis. Namely because Miyazaki's son was at the helm instead of him. Utterly disappointing film.
A friend of mine once said of Steamboy "if Michael Bay did anime". I tend to agree. Bombastic and uneven. Great visuals but very messy.

What d'you think of Makoto Shinkai's works?

I believe it's 7:30 pm where you live! I just woke up two hours ago.
Shinkai is a very distinctive, original director who shares a lot of directorial similarities to Anno. In The Place Promised in Our Early Days, I even see some similarities to Hou's editing. Anyways, I think a lot of his editing style as similar to NGE's if you look at how he alternates pillow shots and wide shots. I love his light pink color schemes and "natural" lens flare/glint style. It's some of the most beautiful anime I've ever seen. Not beautiful in the intricately beautiful sense, but in the simple beauty of light and composition.
It's been a while since I watched some Anime - I think I shall correct that this weekend...

Since we're talking about it, you should try Shinkai. I dunno. Most people say that to get someone into anime, you should show them Akira, but sometimes I think it could be just a really beautiful film like 5 Centimeters Per Second that could win them over (weird wording, sorry). I've already suggested this on another thread, but maybe try Summer Wars. You'll almost certainly like it.
Rex O'Connor
08-20-10, 01:53 PM
Oh. no-no-no. Of course he should try Shinkai! But I'd advise to watch his works chronologically. Of course, it's IMHO but his "She and Rer Cat" is GREAT for a short b/w anime! And then "Voices of a Distant Star" I consider a real masterpiece! I've seen some hundreds of animes but didn't find anything better than "Voices of a Distant Star". It's my IMHO, I repeat)
P.S. I'm GMT +3, so it's almost 9 pm here)))

Voices will hook anyone. It's flawless. I haven't seen the Cat one. What did you think about The Place Promised in Our Early Days?

Whoops, haven't heard before of Summer Wars. Think it's worth watching) The Place Promised in Our Early Days - I thought that it was called Beyond the Clouds - The Promised Place. Watched that in a noisy company. Unfortunately that spoiled the impression. Besides it was about 2 yers ago. But I liked it and gonna re-watch alone) What's for 5 Santimetres - I think it has the same lvl as She an Her Cat, can't be compared to Voices.

Ive seen it couple of times now (Porco Rosso) its really not bad, maybe the absence of "fantasy" elements makes it less appealing to most Ghibli fans but,it has its charms and is pretty original in comparison with other Miyazaki films, (except for the element of flying and the portraitation of woman as strong beings :) )
Worth to watch at least once.

Searching the internet I managed to find out a pretty decent Japanese Anime Movie Guide.
http://animemovieguide.com/movie-guide
I knew most of the Ghibli ones, but many others were new to me.
I managed to get my hands on two of the films listed (Cencoroll and Summer Wars) and they seemed pretty good.
In the future I’ll probably check out some of the more obscure ones.

I started watching Death Note at a friends house early this year, but I never finished it because I could not stand being in his house (He had the heat cranked up to "goin to gramma's" levels and it wasn't even THAT cold out, so I had to leave), I'd like to however. What I saw was intriguing.
Other Animes I enjoyed:
Kino's Journey
Angel Beats
Trigun
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
High School of the Dead
XXXholic
Hetalia: Axis Powers
I'm sure there are more, and I wish my girlfriend were here to remind me of the ones I'm forgetting...she is a huge anime fan and I'm still just dipping my toes in the water so to speak.

Try PMMM, it may be the greatest anime series ever made.
This guy who runs a science fiction review site never watched an anime series before and after watching Madoka he said it was the tv series that he would recommend before any others: http://sfdebris.com/videos/animation/madoka.asp
Popped in Macross Plus recently - I liked some of the concepts, so I think it's worth a watch.

I've been in a little bit of a Anime binge in recent days. I would consider myself a casual-fan, but I have trouble finding jumping points and keeping myself from losing interest with certain animes. I am very picky with what I watch for some reason.
I started watching My Hero Academia with my fiancee, and I enjoy it a fair bit. It's a fun series, a similar approach as X-Men, but with its own unique flavor. I finished the first two seasons and will start doing catch up on the third season next week.
I also recently re-watched the first two seasons of Tokyo Ghoul, which is a series I have a considerable appreciation for. I really love how they did this anime. A lot of cool shots, really good use of the musical score. Some didn't like Season 2, and while I realize it was a lot different (and not quite on-par), I still liked it.
As of now, I'm starting through another watch of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, I think I was about halfway through Brotherhood before I quit (I lost internet for a while and never jumped back on it), but the original Fullmetal Alchemist series is my all-time favorite.

The character design of One Punch Man always looked corny to me. Then I heard Bill Burr go on about how much he liked it and some of the themes involved.
I watched the first couple eps and enjoyed it a lot. I just have to be in a mood for it, can't see myself binging it.
