I joined this forum as a 16 year old whose favorite director was Quentin Tarantino; my favorite movies were Pulp Fiction, Star Wars, Fight Club, etc. (you know the sort). I used to think I knew a lot about movies because I knew a Hell of a lot more than my friends, which really isn’t a big achievement. My friends and I were the sort of kids who loved movies with action, comedy or sex, everything the “MTV generation” needed. Although my friends are still into those kinds of films, I feel that I’ve moved on. My movie taste has changed a great deal since I joined Movie Forums.
Now I don’t have a favorite director because I can’t decide, and if I had to pick one, it wouldn’t be Quentin Tarantino. Pulp Fiction used to be my favorite film because it was unlike anything I had ever seen before. But back then, all I had seen was your average blockbuster. Before I joined MovieForums.com, my movie interest was beginning to grow. Hearing QT talk about Brian De Palma and Sergio Leone made me want to see their films. So I did, and because I enjoyed them I started seeing more old films (mainly from the ‘70s). My cinema visits and DVD collection slowly began to grow, and then I came across this place. I joined, and then before you knew it, I was hooked. Every time I went on the internet I checked this site for new posts. I know I haven’t posted a lot compared to some people who joined around the same time I did, but I always check this site. I’m always finding old threads which are really great to read. I think MovieForums.com has helped my movie knowledge and movie taste a lot.
I recently watched Dogville and was completely blown away. I really love this film. It’s now one of my favorites of all time. After watching it though, I couldn’t help but think to myself, “If I had watched this a year ago, would I have loved it?” The answer is no, I would have hated it. I probably would have ejected the disc 30 minutes into it. That’s how much of a prink I was. There are some films that I never even considered watching before joining MovieForums.com, I was the ignorant type who hated black and white films. But after joining, I was encouraged to watch films like Dr. Strangelove, which now is one of my favorites.
But anyway, I decided to take Film Studies in college because of Movie Forums, something which I never even thought about before I joined. I’m still only 16, but rapidly becoming more and more interested in film. I really like films; I can’t seem to get enough of them. But I guess what I’m trying to say is, I owe it all to you guys. So thank you to every MoFo who has increased my passion for movies and turned me into a film geek. Which I really, really love.

Keep on keepin' on.
Rock on. Movieforums has indeed drastically altered my cinematic tastes as well. I joined when I was 15 or 16 (19 now) and back then I thought movies like Mortal Kombat and Pitch Black (my first two DVD purchases) were hot ****. I randomly found the site during its early stages and was a huge poster at first, then slowly dwindled off. But now I have more free time, living out on my own, I can come back and post. Thought my posts my not reflect it, because I still type in the same manner and prefer to talk about those lovely genre films, I have much refined film tastes now.
Prior to the past couple years, I simply wouldn't watch any "old" movies. Aspiring to garner as much film knowledge as say Holden, or as much film passion as say Steve (a poster/friend in real life) I've made myself watch things I normally wouldn't have been interested in. Though my strongest interest is still horror and sci-fi, I now have a profound appreciation for more cinematic art (though I don't find myself talking about it much on mofo).
Mofo made me think about movies, not just watch them.

Mofo made me think about movies, not just watch them.
That really sums it up.
MoFo has had a big effect on how I watch and think about movies.
It does?
I prefer to watch movies for entartainment, and only think about them when I have to. (school)

It's funny after seeing so many films (plus mofo discussion recently) I started to be entertained less easily. A movie like "van helsing" just didn't do it for me at all, whereas some of my friends loved it. It's that refining that forces you to search for greater and better films;soundtrack, cinematography, storyline, purpose of the film and the casting (and more) all come into play when you watch. You unintentionally become a movie critic just by embracing the thoughts behind movies and why they were created.
Some people just reject movies because of small aspects like bad language, some nudity, extreme violence or scary atmosphere. But like all artforms they contribute to the main purpose/theme, people nowadays don't say that those famous nude paintings from 'Monet' are disgusting, because they can see the artist's intention and appreciate them for what they are as a whole. Now that's how I feel when I watch movies.
Best of luck in your College Degree, hope it all works out for you :)

I joined, with a good amount of knowledge for the mainstreamish of movies... but in my brief stay I have been exposed to such awesome films like Blade Runner, Taxi Driver, Dogville, Run Lola Run.... I hope to be here for a good while longer, this place has and will keep expanding my viewing horizons..

Dood, just check it while I wreck it. Movie Forums has changed my opinion of fanboys and filmbuffs. Before I considered them to be fat-cheeto eatin'-nerds that dressed up like characters from Star Wars. I am wrong, for the most part. Thanks MOVIE FORUMS.
I'll continue to voice my unwanted opinion - forever.
Yea i was considering film studies too. Thanks to Holden for recommending movies to me like Once Upon a Time in the West, One, Two, Three and a few others i need to watch too. Anyways MoFo has increased my need for movies and my favorite Thread would have to be the Movie Tab which i enjoy see what films you have saw in the past days.
Glad that you enjoying yourself here and seeing some different movies :D

Wow... if that was your attempt on getting brownie points from the good people at MoFo, well I think you succeeded... and for myself, movies are just an escape from reality.

i know what your saying since im only 14 i was like you before i joined movieforums i was like my friends just watching teen sex comedies and things like that. but since i joined my tastes have really changed. about a year ago i would hve watched movies like Taxi Driver and Mean Streets and react just like my friends did when i showed them. i would of thought it was boring but now they are some of my favorite films. i still enjoy to watching dumb movies with my friends like bASEketball and the american pie movies.
i used to think that the star-wipe was the greatest thing to hit the movies since Pauly Shore. :)
Yup, Lucas loves the swipe...
Diablo, I think Parky's post was heartfelt. Seems like the guy has done a considerable amount of maturing in the past months as far as cinema goes... Your post adds nothing on the subject.
I have also gained a significant amount of knowledge from this site, film and otherwise. From Holden's excellent recommendations and tidbits of knowledge, to Yoda and Golgot's insightful yet entertaining political debates, and many other folks who have taken the time to share what they know with the community.
Thanks a bunch folks.... :)
