I just watched the first 40 or so minutes of this movie the other night and I was so impressed. I've seen the movie before and thought it was really good. After watching it the other night though I think that I will have to go and rent it to see if it is the 'masterpiece' that I think it may be. Let me know what you think of the movie?

I think it's a good movie, and how it deals with the AIDS virus is admirable, but the movie is too stuck in the confines of the "courtroom drama" to really take off and fly. Tom Hanks' acting is excellent, ditto for Denzel, and I like how the movie deals with their relationship. But I can't get over the fact that it could have been more than what it is.

Was this on late night Superstation the other day?

"More than what it is" that is the worst arguement I have ever heard since "The acting sucked". "More than what it is " what is that supposed to mean. It is a great movie and if you are going to argue some point about it don't use that one.

It means that the movie isn't good enough to make the audience forget that it's caught in this cliched, overdone, predictable genre.

If you can use that pathetic arguement then im going to use "The acting sucked" from now on! Even though I don't believe it to be an arguement at all because it's so stupid.

I do not agree with the opinion of the speaker. The film is terrific, great Tom Hanks, the film actually very poignant and informative at the same time. Tempted to say that "Philadelphia" is a splendid display of acting. Tom Hanks, playing the patient Beckett reached perfection, his performance is excellent, and today I think its the acting in this image as one of the best I've seen.

While I agree with what you have to say, DougPacino, there's really no point in resurrecting a 13 year old thread.

I love PHILADELPHIA...Hanks is absolutely heartbreaking but Denzel never allows himself to be blown off the screen. The movie projects positive images about the gay community with only a modicum of preachiness.
