View Full Version : Canadian Rant

For all you Americans and others from around the world who may be frequenting this site, I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a little bit of what it's like to be a Canadian. I would like to use a recent example of an event that has happened in Canada, to show you a little bit into the Canadian psyche...
This year, at the Olympics in Athens, Canada totally sucks ass. It's one of the worst years in a long time. Just awful. I'm downright embarrassed to watch our Canadian coverage (CBC) try to weave together stories of our 'Olympic Hopefuls', and the commentators trying to cover up for the terrible performances put on by our athletes.
So yesterday one of our big hopefuls, Perdita Felicien was in the finals for the 100 meter hurdles race. There was big hype on this girl, believe me, because I guess she set a world record in Paris earlier or some crap like that - anyway, she was expected to get win gold.
And of course, what happens? SHE TRIPS ON THE FIRST HURDLE!!!! Unbelievable. And yet so very typical...
But that's not the worst part. It's pretty bad, but not the worst. The worst is that all over the country, people are writing her, writing the CBC, CONGRATULATING HER!!!!!!!!!! Saying "don't worry about it" and 'you did your best' and all kinds of ***** like that. CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT????? She failed! She lost! She wiped out on the first hurdle. She is a loser. We ought to treat her as such! We should be embarrassed, ashamed of our Olympic athletes, and maybe if we got pissed off enough we could get our government to allocate some funds to our Olympic athletes!!! For the love of all things holy!
So that's my rant. My name is Dan and I.....am.........Canadian.

Sounds to me like they are treating her like a loser:

I'm Canadian..... But I don't feel being ignorant and rude is a good way to represent our country, I'm not embarassed about our atheletes. I'm embarassed with people like you. It's not the athletes fault either, it's the governments, they don't put NEARLY enough money into funding our athletic programs, or even enough money to send over athletes. The states on the other hand have the money and the ability to train and supply their atheletes with whatever they need. So don't be embarassed by our athletes, be embarassed with yourself.
I do not care how much you practice or how much experience you have, at some point in their lives athletes will make mistakes. Granted this was the olympics and there is no room for mistakes, but next time you think about it just remind yourself that no matter how bad you feel she feels worse. It was also unfair to the other woman she fell into and caused her chances to go down the toilet.

That's not fair, it could've happened to anyone. But the person who you should really feel sorry for is that Russian woman. She went out because someone else was unlucky, so imagine what that must feel like :(

Wow. I can't believe you guys. You're just like all the other Canadians. Don't f*#@ing blame the government, don't give me that 'she did her best' garbage. She failed. She is our best olympian and she sucks. There is no excuse. We have an embarrasing olympic team.
I don't care how she 'feels'. As a Canadian, I want to be proud of my team. If they lose, I'm not proud of them. I don't care that they 'gave it their all'...
When Canada plays the US in olympic hockey, I don't cheer on the team if they loose to the Yanks - I rant and I rave and curse and almost cry. When the Canadian hockey team won gold I was happy. I was bursting at the seams happy. Because we won. We did something good. We excelled.
I will not cheer for, defend, any athlete who does nothing but disappoint.

I can see where you're coming from. I'm Welsh, and we have a rugby team that, despite having surprised people at the World Cup, is pretty poor. However, that doesn't stop me supporting them and wishing them luck, and feeling bad for them when they lose. But then again, we're all like that over here...

I think you got it wrong here.
You say you want to be proud of you're team, but you're only proud when you win?
You need an attitude adjustment, if they did their best then you should be proud of that achivment whether they lose or win.
I think it says a lot about canadians that they surported Perdita Felicien.
You are the one who is letting the canadian side down.
But then i doubt this will make a diffrence to you..

You're still not getting it folks. If you support a sports team, you do follow them, win or lose. I'll give you that. See, I'm a big hockey fan. More specifically, a Toronto Maple Leafs fan. Those of you who are American and or know nothing about hockey won't understand how terrible the Leafs were in the 1980s and early 1990's, when I was a young lad. But that's when I began my love affair with them. Yes, they stunk, but I still cheered them on.
HOWEVER. When they lost, and they lost often, I cursed, I swore, I threw things at the TV. That doesn't mean I disowned them or gave up on them. I just called a spade a spade. And THAT is what I'm doing with the whole Perdita and all Canadian olympic athlethes this year. When they suck ass, they deserve to be booed. It doesn't mean I"m going to forfeit my citizenship. I'm just saying if you suck, you deserve to hear it.

Be proud of who you are man, to be "CANADIAN" or anything else for that matter as long as you affiliate yourself means you must accept our short commings along with the glory.
If you are embrassed by their olympic performance do something about it, wake up at 5 in the morning everday and run a mile. Run to work, Run home, Run everywhere you need to get to...JUST DO IT, NIKE

Fans who are supportive when theire team wins, and shuns them when they fail are a bit sad. Just my opinion so dont take it too personal

Jeez, you're right, you Canadians suck. You can't even win at being the fattest. The US is the fattest country around, you Canadians just aren't trying hard enough.

No, you're right. We aren't the fattest. You guys can have that one. But you guys have crappy iced tea. So there!
Hey I like the iced tea here in the south, add a pound of sugar to anything and it tastes good.

In Canada, correction officials (in prison) will not allow guards to wear stab proof vests because it will make the prisoners feel as if they are not trusted.
Hooray!

The abject beauty of that sentiment left me feeling linguistically callow and bereft of hope. Hope springs eternal, yet not in the Land of Nod.
So, yes…and no.
wait, that doesn't fit there.
Sorry for the repeat. But it was a good one.
What an odd way of telling us about a double post...

It could be worse and we have gotten better at the Olympics.
