I found out who gave me the anon rep, Theres a new thing on the User CP which shows you who gave you it, even if they didnt have the guts to put their name down. I wont say who gave me mine, but it was a regular member, who hasnt even posted in this thread and who has never had any gripes with me but for some reason wrote a pretty harsh message with their rep. It was beyond rude and totally uncalled for. Seriously lost repsect for this dude.

My view on this rep system: Peoples rep levels raise so quickly cause the same people keep repping the same people, and the more rep you gain, the more your rep giving power increases, so the amount of rep received by mutual rep exchangers grow exponentially. The people complaining about negative reputation sound like people who complain about their post count getting depleted after a board resync, point is, "What is the big deal?" It's not like these little green bars are going to buy the weekly food supplies or anything.

Here is my take on this, and I am only guessing. A lot of people who tend to spend a decent amount of time on the internet treat it as any "real" place. Such as work, parties, movies, etc... We are sharing our thoughts and when we get into a argument or disagreement with someone we usually defend ourselves. I was in the military and I know the importance of recognition. Morale can be an extremly emotional thing, and when those of a community fail to respect one another emotions can and do fly. Some think this is ammusing: to see poeople get upset over such things, and I say that those who are getting upset are not disgruntled because of the amount of rep points they have, but instead because they feel that they were disrespected. I am probably wrong though...;)

I understand where you are coming from, but if truth be told, a favourable reply in response to a topic/comment made or a private message says a thousand words more than a few rep points. New members on forum boards will generally make around 1-30 posts before deciding whether or not he/she will stay and continue posting, depending on the feel of the community and the type of topics discussed more than the reception they are given.

I think you make some good points about keeping the rep thing in perspective, but it does have a very stabilizing effect on people's behaviour. When I first read of the system, I thought "ew - totally lame", but having seen the contrast between here and how people often treat each other when there are NO repercussions, it does make a positive difference. That said, you're right: it don't pay the rent!

I think you missed my point there, sweets. The value I see in the system is that it removes some of the anonymity of posting here, because if you go off on someone, there can be repercussions. Places with no rep system tend to have a LOT more flaming and much less actual discussion.

Negative rep points are needed just as much as positive points i think. Becaus then people can give u a negative point saying they think it was wrong to say whatever it is that you said that upset them. They can disagree with you and then you can talk about it, but they should be used when someone is upset or offended by a post you made. It's not about disagreement.

I think if you don't tell the person you're bad repping why you're giving it to them, then there's no point. Not to make a hoo ha out of it but i received a negative rep from Equilibrium saying 'me no like you', and i'd never even spoken to him before and i didn't know what i had done.

I guess reputation is a good thing but look at me! Tell ya the truth, I could care less about reputation because there's a lot of people that will always disagree with you on subjects you/you can feel strong about. It doesn't bother me because I'm not a dim wit, I just get into arguments. As long as I know that where I stand on movies or actors or politics or whatever is from the heart and with reason, I could care less about reputation.
However, that's not to say you should'nt be nice to people here because most the people on the board are pretty nice. I guess you can say i learned the hard way through arguments. It's okay though because I don't argue that much here anymore anyway because it really can't be done effectivley and isn't worth it to the guests of this forum. The guests could care less about the member's opinion. Most of them are just looking for the latest news on their favorite movies. It really screws up a thread when half of it is an argument going back and forth that nobody cares to read about except the two guys arguing. Totally senseless.
The best advice I can give ya is know what you're talking about when you post something and don't get angry about other people's opinions because there sure are a lot, and a lot of dumb ones too but meh, you'll always be you and that's one thing you can count on!

the thing is, that some users have so friggin much, that they can just shrug off a small loss, but others are fighting for every point, and when someone gives u bad rep just cause they disagree with you, then it's devastating to your rep
