All this hooplah started when sedai made fun of Chester on the Spidey 2 thread now lets see what the general population thinks of the kings of modern rock. Sedai is the first person that I've ever come across that dislikes thier music. If you must vote please post your reasoning for like or dislike.

I didn't know Linkin Park was a movie ;)
Also don't rat on Sedai please, we all have our own tastes. If somebody doesn't have the same opinion as you on a certain subject your not required to agree with it- but even if you don't understand it you should always respect another individuals free thought.

Bland, uninventive fluff. Every single song sounds the same.
I have a severe distaste for them.

Hi, I would appreciate it if you wouldn't attribute ideals to me that I have not articulated personally. At what point did I say I didn't like the music? To the contrary, I posted that they had some tight tunes but THEY DID NOT WRITE THEM. A rich composer has carefully constructed the band to dupe you, the listener, by presenting an image specifically designed to get your cash into his pocket. It's not like a few kids close to your age worked hard to get their message out throigh their music, clawing their way up the ranks of artists to get noticed. A business plan was constructed and scrutinized by millionaires twice (or three times) your age, resources were allocated, and the target audience (you) was studied to figure out exactly which buttons needed to be pushed to sell records. Have you seen Linkin Park recieve an award. I have, the band comes up to get the award, but wait, who is that guy in the suit that actually gets handed the award and then makes a speech? You are being had, and you don't even realize it.
Joseph Hahn (a DJ and composer) writes the music and pulls the strings, and likes to stand onstage with his creation. The kid Chester is a strong vocalist, I think "In the End" is a well crafted song, and it is sung extremely well, but HE DID NOT WRITE IT. I know lots of good singers, but that doesn't mean they are the "King of Modern Rock". Please tell me, why is 50% of Linkin Parks recorded work rehashes of current songs? Live albums, remix albums...not the sign of prolific songwriting in a band.
Linkin Park = Boy Band
Also, this poll is out to lunch, I either have to like them or I have to have never heard of them to vote? What if I have heard of them, but don't like them? Thing is, I like some of the songs, I just don't respect them they way I respect a group of songwriter/players that have talent across the board....
[EDIT]Thinking about this at lunch, I figure first you need to figure out who the king of Linkin Park is, which would be Hahn, Then you need to wonder why his offstage image is so vastly different from his stage persona. Onstage a spikey haired skate punk, offstage, Armani suit. So Clearly, if the king of Linkin Park isn't this Chester fellow, then how is Chester the king of modern rock? [EDIT]

This bad I hate (yes I know its a strong word) with a passion. I loathe every single thing about them. From there crappy little guy raping in the back and a DJ spinning. And from all these they get considered rock music. They win awards that could go to other that actually deserve "Best Rock Video" or such. The fill the magazines with interviews and pictures from this band taking up the space for others which are 10x better. I just all around think of them as a big piece of crap that shouldn't be around anymore.
I hate Linkin Park they use to be good when they first came out. When they had a remix i was like what the hell is this crap
wow i think reservoir dogs is the only one that voted Yes in the polls

Linkin Park seems to me to be rather marginal music by rather marginally talented people. Though, I've nothing really against them or those who do enjoy them, just not my particular flavor.
But as for the kings of Mod Rock, how's about that one Quadrophenic band?

i personally like the band it self and the music. as for the thing about them being the kings of modern rock that is saying way to much. i think they are very original and some bands are not. the are kinda a hybrid band, like rock, rap, and pop mixed together and i like it. good stuff.... and kool cound effects
I like the band. The difference in oppinion probably lies in the fact that when I listen to a song, I don't care about anything than the song itself. I don't care who wrote it. I don't care who sings it. And I don't care if it is a remix.
The music itself alone is good. The entirity of the band is, sadly, what sedai said.

The music is formulated rather well, I must say. I have liked many of the songs they have released, but not any more than any other popular hit at any given time. Background music at work or something... I gess I just don;t see the music as inspiring or elevating at all...certainly not the kings of modern rock as far as I am concerned...
Oh, and welcome to MoFO Mirai :)
What sort of music do you like? Films? Hobbies?
Fave music is... I don't know. P.O.D, The Streets, Cat Empire, U2, Guns And Roses... A lot of different stuff really. It has to bring out emotion or let me jump around to it.
Films... Fight Club and anything with cool villains. I love villains.
Hobbies... I'm a cartoonist so I spend a lot of time doing that.
Thanks for the welcome.

I liked them back when I bought Hybrid Theory on release then just gradually stopped listening to the band, didn't buy any other albums.
Just finished a funny book called The History of Heavy Metal by Adrian O'Neill, he is not amused:
Then in 2000 came Linkin Park. Rumours abounded that they were a full-on manufactured boy band, cynically put together to capitalise on the mainstream pop-metal market. They certainly sound like it. It has been suggested that the terrible name was suggested by their record label, so they’d be next to Limp Bizkit in CD racks. The music is soulless and sounds like it was made by a committee. Everything about them is designed to be marketable. They have a policy of not swearing. **** that. I’ll take that from Jerry Seinfeld but not from a metal band. Unsurprisingly they have sold tens of millions of records. The frontman has his own line of clothes, in conjunction with Porsche. Make of that what you will.
I really liked Linkin Park. Listened to them a lot back in the day, and will still belt out the lyrics if "In The End" comes on the radio. Ironically, I sorta drifted out when Minutes to Midnight came out, even though I enjoyed the departure from their usual sound. I used to listen to that album a lot, and then I don't think I listened any of the other ones that came after. Its weird.

lincoln park not as big as central park but bigger than central perk:p
I like some of their stuff. I was one of the people that enjoyed a lot of what they were doing on A Thousand Suns, as well as some of their more popular older stuff. I thought Chester was a pretty great singer.

Most bands that were getting radio play at that time were about as bad as popular music had been in decades, but Lincoln Park at least didn't make me nauseous when it came on.
Korn was clearly the best of that garbage. Then maybe Linkin Park. Then "Break Stuff" by Limp Bizkit (and absolutely nothing else, because they might have been the worst popular band of all time, either them or Creed).
Really, such a depressing time for music.
I was like 16 when Hybrid Theory came out, so of course I liked it. And Meteora. I could tell even then it was pretty shallow, but it's okay to enjoy shallow music sometimes.
Listening to it years later, the experience is similar, but with the "amounts" shifted around, where the "shallow" part is like 80% when it used to be half that. Listen to a few songs, find them nice enough, but then find they have little to no replayability. Replayability is a weird, ineffable quality that I increasingly associated with great music (and use to sift music into different levels of quality).
That said, long after I had essentially finished caring about the band, I remember hearing "Bleed It Out" (which came out in 2007 when they were already way past their peak, popularity-wise) and thinking "dang, that's a lot better than I remember them being." I actually think this one holds up, and if nothing else it's just incredibly catchy:

Oh, and "Nobody's Listening" is still pretty good.

The first two albums are god nu metal staples, but I never find myself returning to them. I, as I tend to do, went through their whole discography like I am now with Kaiser Chiefs, but the were gradually getting worse.
hated this group, but then I was never really a fan of two front guy bands where one raps and another sings, or one screams while the other does something else. Hated 311 too for similar reasons. I still have waking nightmares of 311's "chill!" at the start of "Down." Back to Linkin Park, something about their sound just did not resonate with me either. The distortion on the guitars was just too clean and glassy to me. I was coming out of the Soundgarden, Nirvana, Alice in Chains front, so I had come to really enjoy more broken and thicker distortions maybe? Hendrix too. Linkin Park came off to me as a pop band with a weird foot in the metal stream, exploiting hooks and the visuals of rock/metal/whatever the genre was called during this time.
I only tolerated Korn because our band wanted to cover "Blind." For whatever it's worth, I *really* hated Incubus, too?

I never got fully into Korn, but I liked some of their songs. "Got the Life" is a favorite of them. Same with Limp Bizkit. Actually, "Break Stuff" is one I tend to go back to often, as is "Rearranged".
But yeah, it's a particular era that came around when I was already in my mid-20s all while the era of CD's was dying, so it's in that weird spot where I never got fully into any of them, never bought a CD of any of them, never looked at them with the nostalgia that I looked at the bands that I listened to when I was more of a kid/teen... so it's a weird spot where I listened to them often back then but that I barely go back to nowadays.
Since crumbs mentioned Creed, I have one weird and maybe funny story about them. It was around that time that I was using Napster/Limewire/Audiogalaxy/etc. to download most of the stuff that I listened to. I was very much into Creed at the time so understandably, I used to download lots of stuff from them. Now, these file-sharing services were often the source of mistaken/misnamed songs, sometimes in purpose and sometimes not. One day, I downloaded what I thought was a Creed song, but it turned out to be "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" from CREEDence Clearwater Revival. At the time, I don't think I had heard the song; at least consciously, but I dug it. Fast forward 20+ years, and I rarely listen to Creed anymore, but I listen to CCR pretty much every week or so.
The late '90s were not a great time for rock, but man, they were for electronica. Underworld, Boards of Canada, Orbital, Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers, etc. were putting out their best material at that time.

My top 20 bands:

Lynyrd Skynyrd
Black Sabbath
Alice in Chains
Nirvana
Poison
Rage Against the Machine
Cream
Heart
ZZ Top
Pantera
System of a Down

The Doors
Iron Maiden

As for Linkin Park the argument seems to be they are too mainstream, they are too soft, their lyrics are designed for consumption. Couldn't the exact same thing have been said for Nirvana or The Doors? After they followed more aggressive sounding bands

I loved Linkin Park's early albums as well. I was in junior college back then. They were quite popular.
I also loved Creed. Quite an easy music to listen to. I never paid much attention to their lyrics, but only recently I discovered that their songs had a religious slant. Not that it matters.
One modern band that hasn't been mentioned here is System of a Down. I absolutely love them.

I have a soft spot for quite a few of their songs. Angsty-teen me loved "Crawling" of course, but I also really like "My December".
Chester Bennington had a great, expressive voice, even if it was sometimes in service of meh songs.

While I don't love the song, I think her voice is a good addition to the band. It's not someone impersonating Bennington, but she brings a similar grit and contrast to what he did.

I'm always open to recs. I do tend to have a lower tolerance for things that are scream-y and electric guitar-sounding. It tends to sound cluttered to my ear. I do like the stuff that leans more, like, operatic.

In that case, tell me you know all about Symphony X.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4p_PO8_OnY
And most people believe that the album this is from isn't even one of their top three albums. That's how damn good they are (although this is my number 2 from them).
As far as screamy stuff goes, here's one alternative song with hardcore growls and screams to give you a taste. I hope you recognize it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muoWDA6zmsY
For extreme metal, a crystal clearly produced album with easy to understand scream vocals was my intro. Symbolic by Death is the one, and it's considered to be a serious contender for the greatest death metal album in the world partially due to its accessibility. I don't agree, but I do agree that it's a flawless introduction to death metal. Some even consider it a thrash album.
