i don't think this is one of them :)
The dog Friday plays himself.
The first film in what was meant to be to be a mystery franchise focused on blind detective Duncan Maclain who solved murders with the help of his seeing eye dog, Friday. When the second entry, The Hidden Eye (1945), failed to elicit sufficient interest, MGM ended the series.
This film has become public domain, as no one renewed the film's copyright.
This was based on the novel The Odor of Violets by Baynard Kendrick.

I just decided to watch this for the 2025 film challenge! I'll be interested to hear your thoughts!
does the father know about the older guy?

Seeing as how it is from 1942 I would nullify as a juror on this case.
does the father know about the older guy?
I don't think so.
paul didn't stick around.
the actor who played paul was only 16 year older than donna reed but looked 40 years older.
did donna reed play a lot of vixen type roles?

He looked older than he was. John Emery only lived to be 59.

Not that I recall.
Don't know much about Edward Arnold.
Don't know much about Edward Arnold.
I've seen 12 films he was in. He was in 100 feature films in total, even though he died at age 66.
There are two actors in this film with the last name Emery (John Emery and Katherine Emery), but they don't appear to be related, in any way.
the butler did it
Yes, butlers are frequently up to no good That is why I don't have a butler. If you have a butler, you should fire him at once.
i wonder if this was from a play
i wonder if this was from a play
I don't think it was ever a play, just based on a series of books.
who tied up the black butler and marty?
who tied up the black butler and marty?
One of the bad guys, I didn't catch which one.
Friday is a real ladies man (dog).
A decent little mystery with a good performance by Edward Arnold as the blind detective. Friday the dog was the best character though. 6/10 is my rating.
One of those fun movies made by Hollywood about the Germans before Americans got into the war. The word Nazi is never mentioned. Arnold was good at playing blind and hammy it up. A young Donna Reed didn't have much to do. 5.5/10
