I think people who call it "dressing" are the same people who hang their toilet paper under (against the wall).

Men? Women usually like toilet paper hung overhand.Never heard or thought there was a gender aspect to it...I rarely see it under (against the wall).

Never heard or thought there was a gender aspect to it...I rarely see it under (against the wall).I heard a comedian make jokes about it once, I can't remember who.

I remember a joke from The Simpsons about toilet paper - someone was investigating their house and one of the investigators noted (not verbatim)... Deviant underhanded hanging of toilet paper roll. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cmf7FTytRac)

We always called it stuffing.
It's confusing since "dressing" is the word for the stuff we put on salads.
It's kind of like the Italian American debate over whether to call tomato sauce "sauce" or "gravy".

Hopefully, this will be the extent of arguments around Thanksgiving tables this year (as opposed to the dreaded topic(s) we are not allowed to mention here). ;)

The only time I've heard tomato sauce being called gravy was on the Sopranos, and the real Italians didn't like it

I've always thought it was a matter of production. "Stuffing" is stuff you stuff into the bird (or whatever). Dressing is something you fix separately, usually in a baking dish. Often the same mishmash of dried bread, onion, mushroom, carrot, celery, some chicken stock and egg to bind. Of course, many, many regional variations involving stuff like cornbread, sausage, chestnuts.

Just to be clear, I abhor stuffing. It always tastes of turkey bile, damp and offputting. Of course, that could just be my kitchen incompetence. On the other hand, a tasty, crusty-on-the-edges, savor dressing with mushroom gravy ... delight.

Yep. The exact scene I was thinking of. :D
But the argument does extend beyond the Sopranos.

I even looked it up and the origins of the debate are kind of complicated...

And Carmella saying "ragù" at 1:10 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJ2l1jc091Q

For the longest time I thought "Ragù" was just a brand name.

I'm confused with the toilet roll thing...

As for stuffing and dressing, always called it stuffing here. Never ever heard it called dressing, don't think that's a UK thing.

I'm confused with the toilet roll thing....I was just joking around, another example of a "Great Debate" over something pretty much inconsequential...whether toilet paper should hang over or under. I mean, every civilized, intelligent person knows "over."

I put it to you, my esteemed colleagues, do you dress the turkey or do you stuff soggy bread up its whatsis? The answer resides in this question. Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving!

You know... like who's going to win the Superbowl... stuff like that.

I remember a moderator saying we can't discuss sex, religion and something else here... I'm pretty sure it was sports.

Now shut up and eat your ragu... and hand me some of that gabagool.

(Sorry, I start talking like that whenever people start posting scenes from the Sopranos.)
