Is this bound to be a disappointment?

Gladiator II probably won't measure up to the original, but might still end up being an entertaining movie. The trick is to manage your expectations and hope for the best.

Admittedly I have neither looked up anything about this coming movie or sat through the trailer etc (I try as much as possible to avoid all trailers in general anyhow, as don't want anything spoiled), so I have no idea the context of how this is going to fit/work, but anyhow...

Ridley Scott really has been on a bit of a losing streak of late, and really The Martian aside, he hasn't exactly been hitting HR's at the Box Office for quite a while. Again, aside from The Martian, I doubt most of the works over the past decade will be regarded as classics in years to come, or when people talk about Scott's overall career, it isn't Napoleon, All the Money in the World, Exodus: Gods and Kings or House of Gucci etc that they will be raving about. So there is that.

As far as this film itself goes, considering that in story, both the protagonist and antagonist of the original are dead, that is kind of a hard thing to pick up the pieces from - if it's objective is to be a sequel to that movie is (and by naming it Gladiator 2, suggests that is precisely what it is trying to do) and deliver a satisfying narrative from, and naturally it will be immediatley be compared with one of the most widely regarded classics of the past 25 years, so to say the least there is a LOT riding on this movie.

I read a rumor that they're making Lucius be secretly Maximus's son. I'll be REALLY unhappy if that turns out to be true.

Either way, I expect this will fall way short of the original but I'll go see it in the theater anyway.

I was sceptical about the whole idea of this, but the cast looks good, the trailer looks good... I'll definitely go and watch it.
