Around 55-65% similar titles with my own list. Good list Robert the list.. :D
There's no standard reveal method so you can post as many as you want.

Fun list, even if it doesn't contain many surprises. Would be curious to hear a defense of E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, which I feel falls in the bottom tier of Spielberg films.

I guess I would ask why it would end up in your favorite films of all time with that reasoning, but fair enough. I loved it when I was a kid - I walked to the theater 4 times in one week to see it, scrounging whatever money I could find for a ticket - but after a recent viewing, I felt it didn't hold up. That said, my daughter loved it.

E.T. Is probably my favorite Spielberg film. I watch it quite often. Good pick.

Many of these other titles I haven’t seen yet are all on my watch list and will be watched in due time.

Out of the 20 in the countdown list (much more exciting to me), Laura and Out of the Past have been in my top 100 before. They both made it when I first saw them, but they've been slowly kicked off by other movies. Still, highly respectable choices that should be talked about by more than just the film buff community.

Laura, On the Waterfront and Sideways are my favorite 3 of those 20 that I've seen.

Once again you have beautiful screen shots. You really have a good eye for choosing images. I'll commit on only the movies that you posted with an image.

100 Oliver 1968...Damn good musical. If more people watched it, it would make the upcoming MoFo Top 100 Musical Countdown.

99 The Leopard 1963...Visually stunning, especially those interior shots of Italian villas. But the film didn't do much for me story wise.

98 For a Few Dollars More 1965...I'm not a fan of spaghetti westerns but this is a good one.

97 Shanghai Express 1932...Stunning set designs, glad to see this get some recognition.

94 Laura 1944...Currently in my top 10...One of the best screenplays I've seen, great cast too.

93 A Streetcar Named Desire 1951...Brando was on fire in the 50s and this is one of his strongest performances.

91 Pierrot Le Fou 1965...Worth seeing as a fine example of French New Wave and for Anna Karina🙂

90 On the Waterfront...Love this one.

89 Out of the Past 1947...One of my favorite noirs, Mitchum is good here and Jane Greer beautifully evil:eek:

86 Sideways...Liked it when it came out, but haven't seen it since.

83 The Roaring Twenties 1939...Love this one it's such a well written movie with multiple character stories.

81 The Commitments 1991...Didn't do much for me.

Thanks very much for the comments :)

So pleased that you also like so many of these. :)

Yes, Jane Greer and Anna Karina were both very beautiful.

I can't work out really what happened with Greer's career. It seems that someone put the poison down for her and may have stopped her from working.

Anna Karina has a very interesting story. I'll share some of what I have on her from my 200 greatest actors document below.

Thanks everyone else for the comments, reactions and interest in my list too.

She made numerous attempts to run away from home and an abusive step-father, trying to find boats that would take her to Sweden or America. (from Denmark)
She left school at 14 and began her professional career singing in cabarets in Denmark. She was spotted in the street and cast as the lead in a forty-minute short film The Girl and The Shoes (released 1959), which won a prize at Cannes.
In the summer of 1958, aged 17, Karina hitchhiked to Paris. With almost no money and unable to speak French, she struggled to find a place to stay and had to ask neighbourhood priests for somewhere to sleep. While wandering through Paris a woman approached her and asked her if she would be willing to do some photographs for the French newspaper Jours de France. She began to work as a model and eventually became successful, posing for several magazines, including Elle, and meeting Pierre Cardin and Coco Chanel.
Karina has said that when she met Chanel on the set of the Elle photoshoot, Chanel told her: “I believe you want to be an actress… You need to learn French. What’s your name little girl?” “Hanne Karin Bayer.”, Karina replied. And Chanel said: “No: Anna Karina – call yourself that.”
She also appeared in commercials. She sat in movie theaters and watched French movies to teach herself the language.
Jean-Luc Godard first saw Karina in a Palmolive advert in which she posed in bathtubs. He offered her a role in The Little Soldier/Le Petit Soldat.
While working together on Le Petit Soldat, Godard wrote a note to Karina, saying: “I love you, come and meet me at midnight in a café called Café de la Prez.” She had already fallen in love with Godard so she ended her existing relationship. They married in 1961.
One Godard film from this period which does not feature Karina, Contempt (1963) starring Brigitte Bardot wearing a black wig which resembles Karina's dark hair, is said to be based on their difficult relationship . The couple divorced in 1965. Karina was an icon of 1960s cinema.

It seemed to go down the tubes after she left RKO. Maybe Howard Hughes had something to do with it.

I don't think I watched all of it, but I've checked it out before.
I'll stick it on my (pretty short actually) to-watch-list though and give it another try.
I think Minghella does a really good job of it though, and love the cast.

No reason why anyone should be the least bit interested, but I pretty much have my 100 ready. Just need to sort out some brief commentary and/or photos or whatever (something to make it look a bit interesting).

Looking at a couple of others, the standard method seems to be to do it 10 films at a time?

I've broadly used the following criteria:
-technical and innovation
-visual beauty
-emotional involvement/how engrossing the film is
-how otherwise absorbing/enjoyable it is

Unless I make any last minute changes to the tailenders, these are my 100:

The Passion of Joan of Arc 1928 France Carl Theodor Dreyer
Blackmail 1929 UK Alfred Hitchcock
The Blue Angel 1930 Germany Josef von Sternberg
Scarface 1932 USA Howard Hawks
Shanghai Express 1932 USA Josef von Sternberg

Apologies, my reaction on posting the images from my intended number 4 made me realise it should move up a slot.
So, trying again here with number 4

4 Blow-up 1966 UK/Italy Michelangelo Antonioni

It's funny, there are films which immediately after the first time I've watched, I had down as literally my number 1, and which don't even make my top 100 now. I can think of Network and Limelight off the top of my head.
Blow-up's the opposite. The first time I watched it I didn't like it. The hero is incredibly sexist, to the extent that it is irksome. Also, not very much happens during the first half and I wonder where it's going. But I love the pace of it. And other than the daft ending, I actually get into the story now. And it is such a beautiful film to look at. It's also by far I think the best film for seeing swinging 60s London, which is really interesting and cool.
There are other Antonioni's I love, such as The Passenger, which could easily have come a lot higher in my list, and which actually I probably have more love for. But, this one is such a visual treat, so here it is.

1 The Naked Island 1960 Japan Kaneto Shindô

Now some might say it's a risk putting a film in you saw for the first time only a couple of days ago, and that most people have never heard of.
But what the hell. I love it.
For me it's a perfect little movie. So as to be clear, it starts off slow. If you skip the first 30 minutes, then you could argue you haven't missed any of the story.
But I like that. It sets the tone. I think it was also very likely an inspiration for purveyors of the slow cinema genre which I love.
It is an absolutely stunning film to look at. I have so many screenshots in my collection from this film. And unlike some beautiful looking movies, it doesn't seem contrived. The beautiful shots fit nicely into the movie.
The set location is incredible. Up there with the London sewers in The Third Man, but they have a whole island! And it's the basis of the whole film!
It's a nice story. Simple, but it works. And it has a meaning. It has a meaning as deep about life as any film.
Also, the director has his own style and own way of structuring a film which I think's really cool.
There is a version of this on youtube. You don't need subtitles because there's no dialogue (although as with the greats of slow cinema, you don't really notice). But the youtube version is a bit blurry, and to get the most of it, you want to find a nice clear/sharp copy.
Anyway, if you get to watch it, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.100041

I didn’t find Hairpin either daft, or disjointed either. It was, to me, pretty coherent when you consider she ran to the injured man because she saw him as a possible means to a new life when you understand what she was running from.
That final scene where she sits at the stream with sadness as she knows she can never return to her old life after she helplessly watches a chance at a possible new life, and a possible happier one, hits me with the feels.
One of the few times I’m with Minio here.

Interesting list, Robert! You’re more versed in movies than I am. Many of the movies on your list are ones I haven’t even heard of, let alone seen. I loved the ones on your list that I have seen.

Agh that's really kind to say Mark.
I doubt that tbh, it's probably more that I target particular movies.
There are loads of people on here, probably including yourself, who have seen many more movies than me, in some cases many times more movies than me. I cheat because I am only interested in the best or what might be the best.
Great to hear you have enjoyed the ones you have seen, and I hope I might have provided some further useful inspiration.

“I doubt that tbh, it's probably more that I target particular movies.”

Well, then you have more refined cinematic tastes than I do.:) Last weekend I saw Geostorm for the second time. It’s a silly film that one could never take seriously, but I find it be quite entertaining. Definitely a guilty pleasure.

“I’m mid-40s and I love silly movies still.”

I’m all for intelligent, enlightened films, but sometimes I just love to sit back and enjoy a brainlessly fun movie like Tremors or The Relic.

I think I've finally figured out what my 100 favourites are...actually it was a list of 140 titles so that made it a very frustrating process (and it's only the 20th century films)

You've got a lot of international films in your list!

I made another one for the 21st century, only 30 titles (so far) but it's two decades vs. eight decades from the previous century.

Mostly the usual suspects, the films that everybody loves.

That poster for Secretary's a cheeky one isn't it.
lol
God, you wouldn't get away with that these days hahahahahahaha.

Again, some interesting choices and some ones which I'd like to at least check the trailer and reviews out and go from there.

Incidentally, the following 'omissions' are also worth considering (especially the ones in bold imo):
Sexy Beast 2000
In the Mood for Love 2000
Donnie Darko 2001
City of God 2002
Uzak 2002
Café Lumiere 2003
Sideways 2004

I've highlighted the titles in red as "watched". All good movies that I've enjoyed watching (to some degree anyway).
The only one I had considered was Django Unchained, my favourite Tarantino movie.
My minor issue with Django is that it consists of various "chapters", and as with anthology movies some parts are better than others. This impacts the way I view the film as a whole.
I think I've mentioned before that this is one of those films that could have been released in two parts, like Three Musketeers vs. Four Musketeers.

I love it, but it's not a super-favourite.
But I might add Nocturnal Animals to the list.

Pretty cool! I could make a new top 100, too, but just a hundred is really limiting and hard to pick.

Always cool to see Elevator to the Gallows on there. A film which shows how just absolutely dumb blind bad luck can change everything and the grave stupidity of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. That Miles Davis score is one of the all time best. Elevator to the Gallows is on my top 100 list if I ever finish it.
