Does anyone here have a job that they both love and hate? I love my job but the stress has gotten to me over the past few years and have started to debate on pushing through until I have 30 years or retire early and find something else. My job is to help people and I love that aspect of it but the stress can at times be overwhelming. Can anyone here relate to this (having something in their life they both love and hate) and if so how exactly have you dealt with it in the past?

I've mentioned in the past I'm in law enforcement. Specifically I work as a CN (Crisis Negotiator). Been doing it for around 23 years. My job is to give people a moment of pause. A timeout. A step back with a deep breath so they can make calm, logical decisions as opposed to rushed, uneducated ones. I love doing it a lot. I enjoy the satisfaction of helping people in need (I also work as a volunteer for a veteran's crisis/suicide help line). But as I said earlier it's extremely stressful. Recently when I come home from each shift where there was a call I find myself wanting to be alone and not socializing with my wife or children and not doing the things I used to love. It hasn't become a huge issue but could evolve into one some day if I allow it to get out of hand.

Anyways, I apologize for rambling. Just wanted some advice from you fine folks to see if any of you have similar stresses in your life that involve both loving and hating what you do involving work (or any aspect of your lives). Could use a little wisdom right now. It's weird how I always have the answers to other people's problems but come up blank on my own. Thanks for reading and hope each of you have a great and blessed day.

Stress kills.

Change your job to a less stressful one, if possible.

Sounds like you have compassion burnout. (I have no idea how people work in vet clinics for example & see the results of animal cruelty. This would tear me to shreds.)

May I suggest you drop the volunteer part? I think your problem may not be your job so much as the amount of time you’re putting into it. Not being present when you come home is worrisome. Could you reduce your job hours at all?

I would also suggest planning a vacation. Something to look forward to.

Good luck.
