View Full Version : The MoFo Musicals Countdown - Preliminary Thread
I'm surprised, I thought that you might have waited closer to the deadline. Are you done watching musicals, like in the Group Watch?
I'm still going to watch the musicals in the group watch because it is fun!

That was tough! But I did it. I submitted my ballot. I have films from every decade starting at the 1930s up to the 2020s. I think I will have a 1 pointer this countdown as well.
Isn't a little early to submit your ballot? I understand why you would want to get your list ready to submit, but I thought you were participating in the Group Watch thread. You could miss out on a new favorite. Are you giving up on watching musicals already?

No, I'm not giving up on watching musicals, but it is unlikely that any other musicals are going to make my ballot. There are 40 musicals that I rated a 9/10 that did not make my ballot, so I figured I might as well submit my ballot now since it is unlikely to change.

Yes, Baby Shark's Big Movie (2023). And I did actually watch it. I should probably pretend that I was forced to watch it, but I watched it voluntarily. It was actually pretty good though. It's cute and colourful and the songs were catchy. I rated it a 7/10.

You've probably seen most of the Disney musicals already, but maybe you missed the Winnie the Pooh movies?
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977)
Winnie the Pooh (2011)
I haven't seen them in a long time, but I remember them being cute movies.
There are probably more than just these two, but you can start with these and look for more if you like these.

Still need a musical or two to round out your ballot? Here's one that has funky cool rock type music in it, it's damn funny and very creative and under 1 hour to watch. It's composed of six short stories that are episodic. It's a blast...Give it a try
Here's the first segment under 10 minutes on YouTube and this is the official channel of the film's director Cory McAbee.

Thursday Next, I think I know the answer to this question, but I'm asking just in case I'm wrong.
Are the TV adaptions of musicals eligible? (Mainly the ones from back in the 1950s, but there have been a few recent ones too.)
Some examples:
Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella (1957) starring Julie Andrews
Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella (1965) starring Leslie Ann Warren
Peter Pan starring Mary Martin
Annie Get Your Gun starring Mary Martin and John Raitt
The Sound of Music Live! (2013) starring Carrie Underwood
Grease Live! (2016) starring Aaron Tveit, Julianne Hough, and Vanessa Hudgens

Good question. I think TV movies usually aren't eligible for these countdowns (but what even is a 'tv movie' in the age of netflix...). Not having seen any of the ones you suggested, I don't know if they are more like movies that happened to be on TV or more like filmed stage shows (which are definitely not eligible).

These are filmed stage shows, but they were specifically filmed live for TV, not shows that were filmed and then later shown on TV.
I didn't think they were eligible, but someone mentioned Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella (1957) starring Julie Andrews in a different thread, so I just wanted to verify that I was remembering the rules correctly.
Thanks.

I submitted. I enjoyed prepping for this, but did end up a little burnt out. Understandable for me because I even got burnt out on Noir when semi-binging them, and that’s a genre I enjoy much much more. I ended up doing around 45 new watches for this. 3 made my list. I also had a very notable rewatch make my list that wasn’t on it initially.
Looking forward to list proper. Probably still try and watch a few things as we go. I expect this to be one of my lowest % watched in a while. Horror is probably the only genre I have seen less of.

It’s a mixture. Always trying to fill in blind spots. I use the mofo lists for that often. I end up going down director trails pretty regular, if I find a director I love my brain wants to consume it all. Criterion Channel is nicely curated, and they almost always have a couple bundles I am interested in. I try to stay current with the stuff that interests me too. So depending on the time of year that can usually eat up a watch or two a week. This year it really doesn’t feel like there has been as many new releases that interest me, which has been a bummer.

I started out the musical watch period not watching many musicals, now I find myself 'cramming for the test' so to say. I'll probably switch gears after I send in my voting ballot....still working on finishing Gregory Peck's filmography.

I would love to do that for a few classic actors the way that you do. I try to stick to my services as much as I can though. I don’t like watching off my computer very much. If I mirror from my computer to my TV, I find the picture quality drops pretty significantly. Most of the free links seem to be more DVD quality too.
I say all that just to say it’s hard for me to watch some of those deep cuts for classic actors in the quality I would want. I have yet to run out of stuff to watch. I am guessing when I do I may do dome of that. Peck, Bogart, Davis, Brando, Hepburn. Those are a few I would love to watch everything from.

If I mirror from my computer to my TV, I find the picture quality drops pretty significantly. Most of the free links seem to be more DVD quality too. That makes sense. I never watch a movie on my computer either. What I do is download with a VPN (of course) and load the .mp4 file onto a USB thumb drive and then stick into my USB port on my BluRay player. That way I can watch on my big TV. But yes a lot of old and obscure movies have crummy video quality. Often they've never been released on DVD/BluRay or streamed.

Thanks for the recommendations.
I'm planning to watch Hercules tonight because I heard the song "Go the Distance" on one of the singing reality TV shows, (I think it was "American Idol"), and I loved the song, so I'm hoping to love the movie too.
I recently watched Tangled and Encanto, and I liked both movies. Tangled is the more likely of the two to make my list (if I can find room for it).
I've heard the song "Colors of the Wind" from Pocahontas, and I love the song, so hopefully I'll love the movie too.
The rest of those movies are complete blind spots for me, so I'll try to watch them before finalizing my list.

I've heard the song "Colors of the Wind" from Pocahontas,
Surely that's just shades of brown isn't it?
Sorry, I had to.
Putting aside the entirety of Purple Rain, there aren't many songs from musicals that I listen to outside of the films themselves, but the following come to mind:
"Origin of Love" from Hedwig and the Angry Inch (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HWW89yndhT0)
Interesting. My big song from Hedwig is Midnight Radio. Followed by Wig In A Box.

My ballot is in! An abundance of great musicals to choose from - but I think with this countdown my taste is more particular and a little more divergent from the general consensus - to a degree. Some of my favourite musical moments (aside from Wig in a Box, which seems pretty popular!) :

Great to see so many Hedwig posts (if it translates into points it'll do really well, which would be great) but I'm surprised that no one's mentioned the best song in the whole film/soundtrack. For me Angry Inch is obviously the stand out track.

New question to ponder over the weekend: what is your favourite stage musical that hasn't been made into a film yet? And who would you cast in it?
Barnum. I love the movie The Greatest Showman (2017), but it's not really the same as the Broadway show. The story is similar, but the songs are completely different. I saw the Broadway show starring Jim Dale (live on Broadway), and the London show with Michael Crawford (on DVD), and I loved both.
Also, Pippin. I saw the Broadway show starring Ben Vereen many years ago. I don't remember it well because it was so long ago, but I remember that I loved it. I would love to see a movie version of it.

I guess, it's time me to wake up.
btw, I've forced myself to see some musicals in-between my regular film watch during the last months. Alas, not satisfied by most of them.
Anyway some stats,
the ones I saw for the countdown (my very first view), randomly listed:
Funny Face (1957)
The Muppet Movie (1979)
The Sound of Music (1965)
An American in Paris (1951)
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964)
Once (2007)
Fiddler on the Roof (1971)
Paint Your Wagon (1969)
Victor/Victoria (1982)
I plan to watch today Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.
I've rewatched:
Everyone Says I Love You (1996) (probably my seventh rewatch, it's so enjoyable)
Singin' in the Rain (1952)
I have about ten other titles that are absolute lock for my ballot from the very beginning.
Not sure how to proceed the ballot now, considering my mixed feelings about most of the newly seen musicals.

Those movies are on my too watch list for the countdown, but so are like 30 others and I can't watch them all. Of those three listed above did you really like them? or what would you rate them at? I'm just trying to get an idea if I should watch any of those or skip them.

Of these three, I'd recommend only Funny Face (1957). Although the plot and the screenplay are silly, the visuals are very nice. I even think this is one of the first movies applying a new modern visual design as a whole.
I guess, you'll probably like An American in Paris too but meh, there is too much filler - overly-extended musical sets, etc.

Hallelujah (https://letterboxd.com/thief12/film/hallelujah/) (1929) - Far from perfect, but historically notable and one that has stuck with me.
Cabin in the Sky (https://letterboxd.com/thief12/film/cabin-in-the-sky/) (1943) - One of my personal favorites, directed by Vincente Minnelli
Once (https://letterboxd.com/thief12/film/once/) (2007) - Fast-forward to another century, this is one that will likely rank very high on my list.

I never really thought of them as such, but thinking about them, I'm not really sure why they wouldn't qualify (my best thoughts on Buster Scruggs is if the first segment would make sense to consider a musical, but the segments are really inconsistent on whether they had anything musical about them and of what nature). Haven't been reading a lot of this thread, but just wanted to get a feel on if people are considering films that feature a lot of songs performed, but not necessarily where characters burst into song to converse. Stuff like 8 Mile or Inside Llewyn Davis where the characters are singing and performing as part of the story, and not just talking in song.

I voted for several such movies. They were eligible so if I felt they had enough singing and I liked them enough, I voted for them. IMDb tags were not a requirement for eligibility so I didn't even bother looking at them.

I think the first section of Buster Scruggs is musical, but can't recall the rest of them being. There would need to be at least two/three songs for it to be considered.
Whatever, just voted.
I did have to broaden my scope a bit to get to 25, but it wasn't as hard. I mostly focused on musicals and films where the music is integral to me, with songs that have stuck with me or soundtracks that I still listen often. My Top 5 was more or less set in stone, so after that, I went with a mixture of classic musicals I love, a couple of Disney/Pixar animated ones I hum and listen to a lot, some nostalgic choices, some I haven't seen in a while but whose songs have kinda stuck with me, with the last two or three being more or less *weak* but that I still find memorable either personally or historically.

I think 40-something is like the smallest amount of ballots, right? If we're at 35, we're probably good cause you'll probably get a big influx between today and tomorrow.

Depends on what you count as an official list, how far back you go, et cetera. Way back in the day, even something as broad as the All-Time list (before the big anniversary refresh) got just 42.
By most "modern" standards, yeah, even the very niche ones get in the 40s, so we should end up right around where we usually do for anything resembling an acquired taste.

Stuff like 8 Mile or Inside Llewyn Davis where the characters are singing and performing as part of the story, and not just talking in song.
So, I've heard musicals where the singing and dancing are a natural part of the narrative and something that could happen in real life be classified as diegetic musicals, such as Cabaret, All That Jazz, and Once. It's been probably a decade since I've seen Once, but IIRC, the musical performances are performed by musicians in the story and not stage performers (as opposed to the two Fosse musicals mentioned), so you don't get dancing sequences timed to the music. I don't think I've heard of people arguing Once isn't a musical, but I'm not sure what would differentiate that from Inside Llewyn Davis (though I never classified the latter as a musical, mentally, and didn't cross my mind until I saw it mentioned in this thread recently).
What most people refer to as traditional musicals, I've heard classified as non-diegetic musicals (this diegetic vs non-diegetic is akin to, but not the same as diegetic and non-diegetic music though, with the latter including things like the soundtrack of a movie). One may observe the phrasing you used would exclude something like Cabaret, though I think when people are making statements such as that, they're still probably mentally including them with the "burst into song to converse" group. I saw Please Baby Please probably last year. Classified as a musical, looks like a musical, halfway through, it felt like they shoe-horned in a musical solo because they realized there weren't any musical pieces in the movie - just a lot of people doing little dance-like movements to the instrumental-soundtrack. Made me wonder if traditional musicals should be called "dansicals", since it seems like the dancing and not the bursting out into song is what really breaks the sense of reality in the movie.

A quick eligibility reminder as we've had a couple of eligibility questions:
A musical is defined by wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musical_film) as:
"a film genre in which songs by the characters are interwoven into the narrative, sometimes accompanied by dancing. The songs usually advance the plot or develop the film's characters, but in some cases, they serve merely as breaks in the storyline, often as elaborate "production numbers".
And by Harry Lime as:
"where people (and animals or candlesticks) randomly burst into song"
I'm not going to request people check eligibility using tags on imdb or anything like that (although you can certainly use those to help you find eligible movies). A musical has songs throughout, not just one or two incidents of characters singing karaoke.
Allowed: animated movies, jukebox musicals, classic musicals, modern musicals, musicals where all the singing takes place on stage, musicals with no dancing whatsoever, sung through musicals
Not allowed: concert films, documentaries, movies with only one song, musical TV episodes
I'm really trying to leave the eligibility as open as possible, to allow people to vote for what they want, and what they consider to be a musical. And because I haven't seen every film ever so can't necessarily make an individual judgement on each film.
It does need to have singing. The singing might or might not tell the story - several well-loved movies have the singing 'on stage' or as part of set-piece sequences.
To add to the above list, films about singers or bands only count if there is a significant amount of singing. Having a soundtrack doesn't make a film a musical. Films that have subsequently been made into stage musicals (e.g. Legally Blonde, Mean Girls, Billy Elliot) are not musicals.
There may well be some films on the list that some people may not consider 'proper' musicals. That's the nature of a group list of this type.
However movies with no singing whatsoever are not eligible and will not be counted in the countdown.
Friendly reminder to everyone that has voted, or is in the process of voting, check and double-check your ballot while you're voting AND when you receive the confirmation message. Make sure that the films you voted are actually the ones you wanted. Double-check the titles and years. There are a good bunch of remakes with the same name which might lead to the usual confusions so this is the moment for each of us to tackle that. Remember, it's easier for you to check your one ballot with 25 entries than it is for the host to check 40-something ballots with 25 entries each.

If you made a boo boo I thought all lists are final though? :p
Yeah, and please, check your PMs, because you might have a clarifying message from Thursday about an ineligible film.
I can't promise I'll be able to tweak your ballot however you like in response, there just isn't enough time and it involves a lot of manual work in some cases, but your odds are better if you reply promptly, clearly, and suggest a very simple fix (like simply replacing the ineligible film with another, in the same slot). If you request that the odds that I'll be able to do it are very very high.
If you made a boo boo I thought all lists are final though? :p
It's one of those notices that's there so nobody can (reasonably) get mad if they make a mistake.
Often there'll be a reasonable, good-faith effort to make changes, but I'm the technical bottleneck as it is and all such changes push all the crucial prep work back even more, so every mistake that gets fixed directly delays the countdown for everyone else. So no promises.

As long as there are enough songs in the movie, and they're sung by the characters in the movie, whether they're burst into songs or performances by the characters, (not just background music), I considered those movies for my list.

I would love to. Looks good tbh. And it’s been past my attention before.
Edit: I did just realize that the movie doesn’t seem to quite fit the criteria for how I’ve made my list so far. I’ve gone pure musical. Like singing and dancing and stuff.
I would have movies like Inside Llewyn Davis super high on my list if I just did music movies. But for me it just seems out of place on a musical list.

There were 332 movies voted for in total (not all of them actually musicals...).
As Yoda said, there are a few things to do behind the scenes so don't expect the countdown proper until next week sometime.

I was talking with Citizen Rules the other day, there are two movies no one brought up, that were clearly musicals.
One was the original The Wicker Man (1973).They burst out in song at least 7 times throughout the film.
The second was Head (1968). Most people have probably never heard of it or forgot it over time.
