1. Rihanna ft. Drake - What's My Name? (This was a grower for me)
2. Portishead - Sour Times (Between singing and instrumentals it was a harmonious piece)
3. Linda Martell - Bad Case of the Blues (Jolly good song)
4. Juan Luis Guerra - A Pedir Su Mano (Too fast and noisy, but I imagine it would be good at a drunk party (now we're talking))
5. Radiohead - Nobody Does It Better (Harmonious, but only decent overall)
6. Teddy Swims - The Door (I'm not a fan of Teddy Swims yet, but the song was listenable)
7. Tony Bennett/Bill Evans - Young and Foolish (Decent enough, at least it was a song)
8. Blues Saraceno - Evil Ways (Lyrics was a bit repetitive and instrumentals weren't cathartic enough, but the song was decent)
9. Avantasia - Avantasia (The Metal Opera, Pt. 1) (I didn't like the chorus, otherwise,- not impressive)
10. Metric - Dead Disco (Vocals and instrumentals were mediocre)
11. The Bees - Voices Green and Purple (Half the song was just noise and the other half repetitive, but it was mercifully short)

I used to add my thoughts, but I hated saying things about the songs at the end of my lists. They're at the bottom: why rub salt in the wound, right? I'll just add ones to my top 5.

1. Metric - Dead Disco (probably my favorite band I've discovered from these tournaments. I was lucky enough to see them live a couple years ago and they were awesome. I try not to reuse the same band, but they're such a good go-to when I'm not sure what to pick next).
2. Portishead - Sour Times (from one of my favorite albums of all time. Not my favorite song on it, but it's up there).
3. Tony Bennett/Bill Evans - Young and Foolish (Bill Evans could play, couldn't he? My dad is also a big fan of theirs. I'll share this with him.)
4. Blues Saraceno - Evil Ways (not much else to say but great blues guitar playing. I'm pretty sure I've heard this in more than one commercial, TV show or movie.)
5. Avantasia - Avantasia (The Metal Opera, Pt. 1) (Epic! I've listened them before and I'm a fan as well. It made me realize I've been pronouncing their name wrong, i.e. fantasia. The five-syllable pronounciation sounds a lot cooler, doesn't it?)
6. Juan Luis Guerra - A Pedir Su Mano
7. Radiohead - Nobody Does It Better
8. Linda Martell - Bad Case of the Blues
9. Teddy Swims - The Door
10. The Bees - Voices Green and Purple

I probably get pegged as a person who likes shitting on things that other people like, but I'm very much the opposite. And what I most like about these competitions, is it isn't a competition. It's about people sharing things they like, and not feeling judged for it. So I'm the same in not wanting to lay it on thick if I wasn't into something. That's not why I'm here.

But yeah, you're on to something about it being the best thing here. There's getting to share something you like, potentially surprising someone or being surprised, rooting for songs you want to win whether or not yours is in the running, etc. It's like being in the main cast of Another Round for a whole month, but you're high on anticipation instead of booze. Much less deadly.

I used to add my thoughts, but I hated saying things about the songs at the end of my lists. They're at the bottom: why rub salt in the wound, right?

Rub salt in my wound, pour lemon juice in my eyes, spit on me in disgust while kicking me in the ribs and exclaiming that my music taste is shit. I don't mind. The notion of people taking offense when someone criticizes a song or movie or book or some other work of art that they enjoy has always baffled me. If anything, interpret such disparagement as further evidence that your taste is superior.

And what I most like about these competitions, is it isn't a competition. It's about people sharing things they like, and not feeling judged for it.

One-hundred percent. The tournament format is just a fun incentive to motivate participants into listening to a collection of songs. Otherwise this would just be another What Are You Listening to While You're MoFoin' It (https://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=49304#post49304), with little to no engagement and no guarantee that anyone has listened to the songs being posted. I also appreciate that our participants don't typically nominate widely beloved classics just to ensure themselves a meaningless "victory." If I nominate a song that ten of you hate, but one person loves enough to add it to a playlist or seek out more from the artist, that's a victory in my eyes.

Rub salt in my wound, pour lemon juice in my eyes, spit on me in disgust while kicking me in the ribs and exclaiming that my music taste is shit. I don't mind.

I don't take any pleasure in belittling anyone's taste. Our relationship to the art we love can sometimes be so tenous, ripping on someone for liking a song I don't doesn't seem like a good use of my time.

The notion of people taking offense when someone criticizes a song or movie or book or some other work of art that they enjoy has always baffled me.

Taking offense might be kind of silly, but I get it. And from time to time, I can find myself bothered by it too. Sometimes, certain songs of movies fill me with the belief that finally something I've felt inside, but have never known how to articulate myself, has finally been made flesh. Now it's out there for others to understand too. How exciting it will be to share it. And so if someone throws their hands up in frustration when they hear the secret I believe is buried somewhere in the song I've suggested for them, and they think it is shit, it just makes me sad that once again I'm feeling misunderstood and isolated from the rest of humanity.

So, yes, silly. But there are sometimes deeper reasons for these silly reactions.

If anything, interpret such disparagement as further evidence that your taste is superior.

I'm already overstocked on evidence of this. No more shelf space. It's time I let other people have a little for themselves too.

Yeah, my goal is the same. I'm looking for one person to appreciate it and if everyone else had to suffer, tough titties. It's why I like when other posters put up obscure stuff that is obviously going to turn off at least half of the participants. I'm not usually interested in the one's that cater to everybody. It's usually a bad sign.

Portishead - Sour Times - One of the best albums of the 90's and, therefore, ever. My favourite song from the band, let alone the album.

Metric - Dead Disco - OK, I was completely unaware of this band. I really like this. I'll be listening to more.

Teddy Swims - The Door - Never heard this, but instantly like it. Feels like Santana meets Eurovision. :D

The Bees - Voices Green and Purple - Unaware of this too. It's ok, but that simple riff is a real hook.

Tony Bennett/Bill Evans - Young and Foolish - This is a nice, simple crooners tale. Reminds me of playing cards with my grandparents 30 years ago as they'd play easy listening piano music/crooner stuff while we played. Kind of bittersweet in that sense.

Juan Luis Guerra - A Pedir Su Mano - This needs to be the music over a 80's/early 90's movie intro/montage. Do I want to listen to an album of it? No. Do I enjoy it for a few minutes while I'm watching a swooping helicopter shot of someone driving along a coastal road or around an island with the top down in the sun or through the streets of the Latin Quarter of some nameless city? God, yes.

Blues Saraceno - Evil Ways - Some lovely guitar work here. Sounds like something a WWE wrestler would've come out to in the 00's. If there must be country, spinning it like this helps me a lot.

Radiohead - Nobody Does It Better - I was pretty sure I'd hate this (it's Radiohead after all and I can't stand all but a few of their songs) but the original is one of my favourite songs of all time, so it's kind of hard to mess it up. He does try, but he doesn't quite. The rest of the band play it well enough to make it work. The fact I love the original is why it's this high though.

Avantasia - Avantasia (The Metal Opera, Pt. 1) - I thought this might be the first real miss for me this round, but it wasn't. I'm not much of a fan of 'fantasy metal', which is where I feared it'd go, but while it touched on that, it didn't go full bore, and so, I'm ok with it.

Rihanna ft. Drake - What's My Name? - Rihanna is so gorgeous. Anyway, I know this from a million clips and cars passing by with windows down, but I'm not sure if I've ever listened to the whole song before. It's a nice flow but I can't say I like listening to it.

Linda Martell - Bad Case of the Blues - I just don't do country, but a little yodelling will always help a little. :D I do appreciate it when the songs are short. For all that, I didn't hate this or anything.

2nd good round in the row. unprecedented. :D

11. The Bees - Voices Green and Purple

That Teddy Swims song is catchy as hell. I'm pretty sure I've heard it; I think my wife likes it.

I really like Blues Saraceno style. He had a brief stint with Poison and I like what he brought to the table. I should probably seek more of his solo stuff.

I'm a big fan of Juan Luis Guerra. He's a staple here in Puerto Rico and this is one of my favorites.

Dan Hartman - I Can Dream About You - Always loved this song. I think nostalgia may just edge out my own song here.

Every Mother's Nightmare - Walls Come Down - As I said when I nominated it, this band should've been bigger. It's a good album, not that I've ever known anyone who'd heard of them, let alone had the album. Anyone here who can break that streak?

Altin Gün - Goca Dünya - I like this. Sounds like it could've been used in an early 70's Euro horror movie.

Velvet Revolver - She Builds Quick Machines - Not Quite GNR is still a bit GNR. This is pretty good, but there's something missing and we all know what it is. That solo still sounds like a trademark though.

Willow - Symptom of Life - This is quite nice. I've not heard anything from her before. With the strong, heavy piano sound it feels a bit like C21st Tori Amos.

The Fall - Container Drivers - I've not listened to much of this band, mainly because I've not liked it much when I have, but I enjoyed this.

Whitesnake - Ain't Gonna Cry No More - It just takes too long to get where it's going.

Calle 13 - Calma Pueblo - This was ok. As I don't speak the language it's more difficult, but the feel is good and I like the short guitar solo at the end, shame they scream over much of it.

Alexandra Stan - Mr. Saxobeat - I don't mind this, but it outstays it welcome a little by the end.

Blues Pills - Little Sun - Mellow, but I didn't really engage with it. It's one of those songs I could see me liking with repeated listens or just never getting.

Rainbow Kitten Surprise - Devil Like Me - I just don't like the singing. Other than that it's ok. But that's a big problem.

Sturgill Simpson - Played Out - Nope. Sorry.

This was a pretty strong round. Some thoughts...

I really enjoyed the Altin Gün tune. I wasn't expecting that.

It was also fun to listen to really old Whitesnake. I was a big fan of their "hair metal" period, but I know I've heard some tunes from those late 70s, early 80s albums and enjoyed them quite a bit. This is one I don't think I had heard.

The Blues Pills song was one that didn't really move me a lot. It was good, but that was it... but as the song progressed, it really got better and better.

I think this is the first song I hear from Willow. I like it. Is she, or Jaden, enjoying any kind of success? With the compartmentalization of media now, it's hard to gauge these things.

I don't know if I had ever heard Every Mother's Nightmare, but as someone who grew up with hair metal bands and who still enjoy listening to a lot of them, this one was not close to my favorites. I did like the guitars and the closing riff was cool, but again, not my favorite.

The Mr. Saxobeat is something that I've heard a thousand times in numerous places, mostly publicity stuff, ads, or God knows what, which is probably why I found it a bit tedious.

Round 11

1. Nirvana - In Bloom (One of their best. Figured this would be the likely winner of this round as soon as I saw it was nominated.)

2. Rina Sawayama - STFU! (Yet to listen to an album in full, but I've enjoyed most of the songs I've heard from her, and I appreciate the wide swath of styles that influence her sound. A difficult artist to pigeonhole. I wasn't that into nu-metal during its heyday, but nowadays it makes me nostalgic for my adolescence, so I'm digging the small revival the once maligned genre has undergone these last few years. This song is like the result of getting three or four disparate radio stations from the late 90's/early 2000's beaming in on one frequency, but instead of a garbled mess, the odd mix of genres coalesce into one aggressive earworm.)

3. Vampyros Lesbos - The Lions And The Cucumber (I could listen to this on a constant loop. Powerfully evocative of a very specific era and setting. Kooky yet seductive with just a hint of danger. Makes me want to buy some beaded curtains and lava lamps. Also reminds me that I've yet to watch a single Jesús Franco film, which suddenly feels like something I should make a priority.)

4. Ten Years After - If You Should Love Me (This really grew on me as it went along, from its borderline bashful beginning of whispered sweet-nothings to a full-on masturbatory jam session by the end.)

5. Metallica - Wherever I May Roam (Not too shabby for a no-name indie band.)

6. Drive-By Truckers - Danko/Manuel (Not a big fan of Drive-By Truckers or Jason Isbell, but this is the one album I return to every so often.)

7. Zebra - Light of My Love (Never heard of this band. Surprised to see this song is from 2003. I'm guessing this was just leftover material from twenty years earlier. Fun song, musically proficient, but also indistinguishable from most of the stuff you'd hear on Headbanger's Ball. That isn't necessarily a criticism, though, since I love that era. The lead singer sounds like he was plucked from a Led Zeppelin cover band with all his Robert Plant wailings.)

8. Fat Dog - King of the Slugs (This would be fun at a rave while high on Molly. It's quite the sonic odyssey with all its weirdness and ebbing energy. Just wish it was a couple minutes shorter.)

9. Black Country Communion - Man in the Middle (Gave me Stone Temple Pilots vibes at first, as this sounds much more like something from a 90's alt-rock station than something from the 2010's. The hard-chugging verses and instrumentation are solid, but that chorus falls flat, like a souped-up mustang that stalls right out the gate.)

10. UNKLE ft. Thom Yorke - Rabbit in Your Headlights (Not a bad song by any means, even if its intentionally disconcerting aura makes me feel like I'm being drained by a dementor from Harry Potter. Yorke's vocal stylings, whether he's singing with Radiohead or UNKLE or my third cousin once removed, set my teeth on edge.)

11. Brittany Howard - To Be Still (First time listening to any of her solo stuff, but I know Howard is a powerful singer from her time with Alabama Shakes. This song isn't doing anything for me, though, as it just feels like she's coasting through a non-descript intro. Needed the song to kick into another gear.)

This was a strange round because I actually liked everything.

1. Nirvana - In Bloom (not the best song on the album, but there isn't a bad song on the album so I say yeah)

2. Drive by Truckers - Danko/Manuel (unexpectedly loved this despite the slightly twangy guitar)

3. Fat Dog - King of the Slugs (I agree it's too long but I do enjoy the madness)

4. Rina Sawayama - STFU (Liked the verse more than the chorus but it definitely grew on me)

5. Ten Years After - If You Should Love Me (never heard of them, good song though)

6. Unkle - Rabbit in Your Headlights (I do like a bit of Unkle)

7. Black Country Communion - Man in the Middle (Not to be confused with Black Country New Road. Catchy )

8. Vampyros Lesbos - The Lion and the Cucumber (enjoyed listening to this)

9. Metallica - Wherever I May Roam (Wouldn't have guessed this would end up so low but it does get a bit repetitive)

10. Brittany Howard - To Be Still (Nice song, probably a grower)

11. Zebra - Light of My Love (didn't hate it but something had to be last)

Nirvana - In Bloom - I knew this was my #1 the moment I saw the line up. I usually penalise those big hitters so as to give others a chance, but even with that in place, this is #1.

Vampyros Lesbos - The Lions And The Cucumber - My #1 is up for grabs today as, while I like this, I only nominated it because I was reminded of it. I'm sure this will do ok with me, but I can already see it won't be #1. I'll see if it can hold on to #2.

Rina Sawayama - STFU! - Completely unaware of this artist (as I am so many of the last 20 especially) but really like this. Like Cap, Nu-Metal wasn't my thing at all but, unlike him, this ain't my childhood either, so I have no nostalgia for it. Wherever this ends up, it's all her and how well the mix of genres/styles works.

Metallica - Wherever I May Roam - Heavy hitters penalty puts this here. Great song.

Zebra - Light of My Love - Good song. Nostalgic without ever having been because it sounds like a band formed from a bunch of guys who grew up loving their parents record collection and that collection was cool. I'll check out other stuff by them to see if this is a one off or 'their' sound.

Brittany Howard - To Be Still - That's nice vibe. That 'to be still' sounds like a sting or motif from an early Spike Lee film.

Ten Years After - If You Should Love Me - One of the slower records the Zebra kids were listening to. :D

Black Country Communion - Man In The Middle - This is ok. A bit like the previous band's influences, this one grew up listening to Velvet Revolver on a loop, instead of a 70's/80's rock collection.

Drive-By Truckers - Danko/Manuel - It was ok, but I needed it to pick up at some point. Felt like it was being held back rather than played slow. That's the best I can describe how it felt to me.

Fat Dog - King of the Slugs - This is an odd mish-mash, but I quite like it. Normally if I'm hearing that kind of N.African/Turkish vibe I'm watching Eurovision, but it works pretty well here too. Now, if this was 3 or 4 minutes long it'd do better with me.

UNKLE feat. Thom Yorke - Rabbit in Your Headlights - Take the worst thing about Radiohead and put it in a place it's unfamiliar. If this isn't last I'm really going to dislike one of the last 3. Plus, it's 6+ bloody minutes of it!

Lots of good stuff in this round. I was particularly surprised by "Man in the Middle" and "King of the Slugs".

Both the Danko/Manuel and Brittany Howard tunes were very nice to listen, so don't be deceived by their spots.

I liked the funk of the Vampyros Lesbos song, but I felt it needed something more.

Thom Yorke is always a treat, and "Wherever I May Roam" might be my favorite Metallica.

But seriously... Nirvana had this in the bag the minute they nominated it.

... I also appreciate that our participants don't typically nominate widely beloved classics just to ensure themselves a meaningless "victory." If I nominate a song that ten of you hate, but one person loves enough to add it to a playlist or seek out more from the artist, that's a victory in my eyes.

Don't you think some adjustments to the rules are needed? Because the above is not rare at all.

To say, tunes which accumulated either 100M+ on Spotify or 100M+ YouTube views, to be excluded from the tournament.

Even if we did something like that, the pick with the most familiarity would still have a leg up over the unknown quantities. Besides, the absolute freedom to choose any song you want is the icing on the cake of this game.

I've had a question that is kinda related. Just out of curiosity, how do you all approach these things? I mean, if you ask me to come up with a song to recommend, my mind would melt trying to browse through everything and anything that I listen to and I like. So whenever I get in these tournaments, I try to come up with a theme in my mind and look for songs that tie into that theme. For example, the one we did in October, I mostly went with songs that dealt with monsters (Cranberries' "Zombie", Ozzy's "Bark at the Moon"). This time, I'm alternating between rock songs (which is what I mostly listen to) and songs from local Puerto Rican artists from varying genres (salsa, rap, pop ballad, merengue). This makes it a bit easier to single out songs for me. Anyone does something similar?

Anyone does something similar? Here's my opportunity to share how much of a nerd I am about this game (and in general, probably): I like to match the song's track number on its album with the round number in the game. I have a list of songs in my collection, heard on Spotify, etc. arranged by track number and I simply choose which one I have a good feeling about based on the round. It gets harder to choose as the game goes on because the later tracks on albums tend to be not as good and/or too long to use in the game. Luckily, there's a lot of special editions out there with rough cuts, acoustic versions, etc. of the better tracks on the album. I just choose the version of the track I prefer.

That's what I'm talking about! Thanks for sharing.

I'm in it for the loot actually. Some songs you guys nominate are added to my many playlists sorted by decade and/or genre. As to how I come up with my noms, it's a multitude of factors, sometimes just to share a song that's in heavy rotation in my house atm. Or a song I just heard in a movie and want to share with the group. Sometimes I want to test a songs timelessness, so in a way I'm using ya'll as a test crowd. :D Sometimes I hear a nominated song and think to myself, well if you like that you gon love this. Its all about sharing good music and enriching yourself with good music from the group. Songs you might've never found on your own because were all in different parts of the world from different backgrounds also songs I've totally forgotten about etc..

The Piranhas - Tom Hark - Were the Ozzy/Lemmy one not so overpowered it might've pipped this, but I love this song. Especially at the moment. Another I've rediscovered and I'm playing it most days atm.

Ozzy Osbourne with Lemmy - Hellraiser - I rediscovered the original about 2 months ago. Adding Ozzy is great idea.

Ezra Furman - Forever in Sunset - This reminds me of something and I can't remember what. I'm sure it's an 80's song (which is the vibe of this whole thing) but I'm sure it's a specific song. Anyway, I like this.

Monster Magnet - Gods and Punks - Oh, this kicks. Love that instumental break in the middle.

Goat - Run to Your Mama - Another odd one, though I'm much clearer on how I feel about it. Probably because it feels more in my wheelhouse?

alt-J - Fitzpleasure - Another I'm not sure about. I think it fits quite nicely into if I don't hear it again I won't feel I'm missing anything, but I'd be more than happy to hear it again terratory.

Kendrick Lamar - Swimming Pools (Drank) - This is pretty good. Mellow with a nice flow.

Tyler Childers - Feathered Indians - Odd song. I don't quite know how I feel about it. I think I like it more than I normally would, if that makes any sense?

Limi-T 21 - Estas Enamorada - Obviously very much outside my wheelhouse, but I feel it'd work better for me if it was more 'traditional'? I don't even know if that's the right word, but it's what comes to mind for me. Lost me towards the end, too.

Marianne Faithful - Working Class Hero - Never gotten the appeal of Marianne. Not as a singer, actress or sex symbol. Just misses me out completely.

Spectres - Tell Me - Sorry, it just sounds too Morrisey for me.

Bambi Lee Savage - Darlin' - The guitar is quite nice. Otherwise I'm afraid there's nothing here for me.

I've used (and use) all the ways mentioned so far except the track numbers. I used themes for quite a while. Sometimes I'll choose a song I think most won't have heard because it's fairly peculiar to the UK (usually pre-90's as it's less likely), Obviously sometimes you just feel the need to share a great song. If I'm going with a really global artist that usually when it'll happen.

Sometimes I'm just in the mood for that song and so pick it so as not have bother to choose something. :D

I spend a lot of time considering this question over the 48 hours we have to choose. I have lots of possibilities, so many hundred of millions of songs to choose from, and I struggle over having to pick only one.

But I eventually do it. After lots of deliberation, I decide one is more perfect than all the others and that is what I want to share with the world.

And then as I start to type, I realize I'm going to pick something else. Sometimes something I haven't even listened to in decades and only have just suddenly decided is my favorite song of all time.

Who are we kidding, that Kendrick song was winning against nearly anything, as would probably nearly every Kendrick song, but that Goat song is a beast, and almost wanted to give it to that just for being that impressive on a first time listen.

And ya, I put my Marianne Faithful track above that one too, but let's not quibble. She's frail and old and half dead and is getting my support for being one of the all time great interpreters of songs (up there with Sinatra and Johnny Cash and Nina Simone for my money's worth)

Wet Leg - Wet Dream - I don't think I'm familiar with any other song in this round, so this'll probably by my #1.

Twisted Sister - Ride to Live, Live to Ride - This is ok, like most of the stuff of theirs I've heard. They're American 80's rock and this is what it sounded like. That's not a bad thing.

The Alan Parsons Project - Don't Answer Me - This sounds a little familar, but I don't know why. Maybe a soundtrack? Or just evocative of its time? I don't think I've heard it before?

Volbeat - Doc Holliday - I was cautious when this started, but I really bought into that guitar intro. The rest is good and that other guitar solo is nice.

Yeule - Pocky Boy - I quite liked this. The title gave me a fairly good clue as to the kind of vibe it'd have.

Kero Kero Bonito - Rock 'n' Roll Star - It's a great song (obviously) and I like her voice. Everything else doesn't quite come together for me. Quirky, but not to the point I love it.

Judas Priest - Turbo Lover - I don't mind JP, but they're not a favourite. This is just another JP song to me.

Rush - Red Sector A - A bit like JP and TS, it's them and it sounds like them. I've never gotten into Rush and so this is just there.

Maroon 5 ft. Christina Aguilera - Moves Like Jagger - Percussion and hook. That's all this song is for me. So, not the song at all. :D If this isn't bottom half for me, it won't be a good round.

Joe Stamm - Flower of the Everglades (ft. Charles Wesley Godwin) - This has been an inauspicious opening for this round.

Miles Davis - Rated X - I'm sure he's a genius and I'm a philistine. But at least the country one had the decency to be about 3 minutes shorter.

On the Corner is probably the one to check out. It's still pretty out there, but it wasn't recorded in the cocaine Hell that Rated X's accompanying album was clearly made in

4. Twisted Sister - Ride to Live, Live to Ride

8. Kero Kero Bonito - Rock 'n' Roll Star
9. Wet Leg - Wet Dream

11. Yeule - Pocky Boy

Really strong round. Even the Miles Davis' song has a lot of interesting/crazy stuff in it that I liked. The "Pocky Boy" song is not bad, but it just feels repetitive.

Also, poor Karen Dalton. It's clear by how badly she does in these contests, and all the stank face her voice gives everyone I know, why she died penniless and borderline homeless. Was ahead of her time, ahead of our time, all the while simultaneously seeming to be transmitting her voice from a hundred years ago. Her voice is always sure to short circuit our silly internet ranking games.

She was great, one of the best even though she would have probably hated me and my applause, just like she seemingly hated everything and everyone else. Just the way I like it.

I just recently started getting into that Greenwich village early folk scene, and Dalton's voice made her an immediate standout for all the qualities you elegantly described. I knew that Dylan has cited her as his favorite singer, but I knew nothing about her life or career until just now watching Karen Dalton: In My Own Time, a documentary that's set to expire from the Criterion Channel at the end of the month. The film is very by-the-numbers, filled with talking heads giving us an oral cliff notes of her life, interspersed with archival footage from her personal life and performances, and narrated bits from her poetry. Dalton comes across as too intensely private and enigmatic for the film to peel back any layers beneath the surface of her undeniable genius as an interpreter of songs, but it was fascinating and depressing to learn about her ups and downs, her life and death. It seems her musical integrity was so strong that it was essentially an albatross to her career.

As sometimes happens during these tournaments, I buy a couple of things I hear a song from.

So kudos to Colter Wall's "Western Swing and Waltzes" and GOAT's "World Music". You've found a forever home with me.

Awesome. Colter Wall has been one of the most authentic voices in country for awhile now. Western Swing and Waltzes is probably the album from him that I've listened to the most. Great stuff.

Goat was a serendipitous discovery courtesy of the Apple Music algorithm. I heard "Run to Your Mama" for the first time a day or two before nominating it. I've since listened to the album two or three times. "Run to Your Mama" is a bit of an outlier, but the worldly influences throughout the album make for a fun listen -- especially if you're into dancing naked around bonfires while high on psilocybin. It strikes a nice balance between modern accessibility and primordial weirdness. Hope you dig it.

Good round. I had heard a couple of these before, like "Sunny", "Cracked Actor", the Pitbull/Aguilera one, and obviously my nom. I also think I had heard the Earth Tongue one in a previous tournament?

Anyway, "Sunny" and "Cracked Actor" were obvious choices for my top spots. The Sufjan Stevens one was a fun listen. I also like the Pitbull/Christina Aguilera one, even though it feels over-produced. The P.I.F. song was also an interesting listen. I was head-banging a bit.

I think I would've liked the "Hey Pretty" one a bit more if it had less talking, but it was still solid.

I just recently started getting into that Greenwich village early folk scene

I considered nominating a few from this scene. John Jacob Niles or Odetta. But then I would change my mind at the last moment. If people react badly to Karen Dalton's voice, I can't imagine how they'd take to a weirdo like Niles.
Dalton's voice made her an immediate standout for all the qualities you elegantly described.
I found out about her about 12 years ago in some culture magazine my ex had laying around the house. Just on the description of that voice alone, I decided I would seek something out by her. And almost by some kind of kismet, I went to the record store that day and her second (and probably best) record was there. It is still the only time I've come across a copy of that anywhere in the real world. It was meant for me.

It seems her musical integrity was so strong that it was essentially an albatross to her career.

She's clearly a lot for some people. Her version of When a Man Loves a Woman could probably clear a room faster than nearly anything in my collection. And I don't think it's entirely that people think the sound of her voice is 'bad' to people (although I've definitely heard it described that way as well). I think there is almost a level of embarrassment that comes with listening to a voice that is so full of naked vulnerability. It makes people uncomfortable.

Awesome. Colter Wall has been one of the most authentic voices in country for awhile now. Western Swing and Waltzes is probably the album from him that I've listened to the most. Great stuff.

It's a good record.

Goat was a serendipitous discovery courtesy of the Apple Music algorithm. I heard "Run to Your Mama" for the first time a day or two before nominating it. I'm more than happy for it to end up being nothing like I expect from that one song. I like not knowing what I'm stepping into when I put a record on for the first time. I'm also supernaturally gifted and picking records I know I'm going to like, without even hearing a note of it first. A good chunk of my collection was bought completely blind, and it has only generated good results so far.

Recency bias I know, but I love that Chappell Roan song and have been listening to it on repeat.
No worries, you was just ahead of the curve. The song has reached #1 in Ireland, peaked at #2 in UK and reached #6 on US Billboard chart and climbing.
