If you celebrate Easter, what are some of the things you do to celebrate?

Ham for dinner. Carrot cake. Cadbury eggs.

If my brother’s family is visiting then we’ll do an egg hunt for the kids, but they didn’t come this year.

My family on my mum’s side is Russian Orthodox, so it’s very elaborate; my mum baked special Easter cakes and something that approximates cottage cheese — a traditional Russian Orthodox Easter meal. I’m an atheist through and through, but this stuff is delicious. We spent the morning together talking and listening to music while eating what she made. Actually, we listened to Yasmin Hamdan, and it occurred to me that listening to that sort of thing (Arabic music) on an Easter Sunday with a religious person (my mum is, albeit not overly) is the closest thing I can imagine to a utopian solution to all the Middle East unrest.

I’ve listened to Soapkills/Hamdan all my life, but this is the first time I thought of this. Having been to Jerusalem, when you see how tiny the site hosting the religious relics is, is seems like this sort of thing is what’s needed.

I’m also reading that fascinating non-fiction book about Russian masochism (The Slave soul of Russia), and it’s got some incredibly bizarre and interesting insights on Russian Easter (such as that drunkards would often say ‘Happy ****ing Easter’ in the 20th century, and that it reflected the national character rather well). Can’t tell my mum as she’d be offended, but I thought that was splendid.

We just have lunch at my mom's.. all my siblings and their kids and grandkids.

Then do nothing the rest of the day.

My family is not religious.

Buying Peeps as soon as they show up in stores. Opening the package and storing. When Easter comes around, the Peeps are chewy almost like taffy.

Easter is a very very big thing in some parts of Europe.

Here, almost all families paint boiled eggs. Usually about 30-50 eggs per family. This should be done only in Thursday or Saturday of the Holy Week. Friday is the crucifixion of Jesus and no work should be done this day. In Friday, people visit the church to go under a special table.

Another thing is the Easter cakes. These are all around (sometimes homemade):

These eggs are gorgeous.

Interesting that you say this is done across Europe. I live in London and wasn’t sure if this was an Eastern European thing only (that was my impression).

Maybe only Eastern Europe. Aren't there painted eggs traditions in France or Spain or somewhere else?

Beautiful eggs! I don't observe the religious aspect of easter, but still enjoy coloring eggs with my teenage son.

My sister-in-law is from Poland and she is big into pysanky! Here's some of what she did this year. Amazing stuff ..
