Just some thoughts as I journey through the first five Star Trek tv series and the movies featuring the original cast and those with the Next Gen cast. No JJ Star Trek here:cool: I'm starting with the original Star Trek series and watching them in production order. I'll probably watch one a night. When I'm done with that I'm off to TNG and so on and so on.
So nothin' formal, I'm just going to yak about what I watched and all of you Trekkers and Trekkies are welcomed to beam in and join the landing party. I hope you ain't wearing a red shirt:eek:

The Cage
So on day 1 New Years Day I watched The Star Trek pilot The Cage. Has to be one of my favorite episodes and while I know there's like a space babe every other episode I've always thought Susan Oliver was my favorite of the bunch. What impressed me was how involved she was with her acting. I could take or leave Jeffery Hunter as Captain Pike but Susan Oliver as Vina really put across a wealth of emotions, and that's method acting. I don't know why she didn't have a bigger career. She was sure stunning looking.

It's interesting that only one character from The Cage made it into the regular series...Spock. Though they never said he as a Vulcan in The Cage or mentioned anything about his background. I'm guessing Captain Pike and Dr. Boyce (John Hoyt) had name changes so that the footage from The Cage could be used in a future ST episode, which of course was done as The Menagerie. Had William Shatter been called Captain Pike that footage wouldn't worked.
You ST fans already know that the reddishblonde guy at conn is Peter Duryea, Dan Duryea's son. He was good as was Majel Barrett as Number 1. I wonder why so many of the cast weren't picked up to star in the series?
Think I like the bridge better with blue doors and a black handrail vs the later red ones.

I've seen the original Star Trek like a dozen times, I even seen the show first run as a little tot...though I don't remember it. I haven't seen The Cage more than 3 or 4 times. I learned alot by watching it last night...like little details I hadn't picked up on. In this short video clip Vina and Pike talk about 'headaches' in a cryptic way. And we learn about the fate of the Mojave.

I never knew that!
If I recall correctly, I think the reason Majel as Number 1 wasn't used in the series is that "society" was just not ready for a female first officer. That reason seems like such a cop out by today's standards (especially when they were gutsy enough to present her in the first place), but we have to remember, at the time; TV series were a gamble even when the prospects looked good... if anything seemed the least bit risky with audiences, it was a wiser gamble to drop it and move on.

It's interesting that she's described as being highly intelligent by the Italians...and said to have the warmth of a computer by a jealous Vina. Literally Spock inherits her persona when he becomes 1st officer.

I kinda gave up on this thread as it didn't get much response....except from you, which I was glad of!
I'm still re-watching Star Trek original series almost every night. I recently watched The Galileo Seven which was a fun but very uneven episode. It has to be one of the most poorly written, dare I say illogical episodes of STOS...and yet I've spent more time rewritting the script in my head then any of the other episodes.

Some of my earliest memories are me sitting with my dad watching taped episodes of TOS. A couple of my favourite episodes were The Doomsday Device & Balance of Terror.
TNG was the best especially from season 3 when it hit its stride and it had many great episodes ie Measure of a Man & Best of Both Worlds.
DS9 was I think my 2nd favourite after TNG also had huge story arcs ie the Dominion War. Stand out episodes for me were In The Pale Moonlight & The Visitor.
VGR was ok. Not great but ok. It stil had a number of good episodes but I always felt like it had more potential but never fully realised.
ENT was watchable but rather forgettable for me.
Watched a few seasons of STD and really didnt like it.
Seen a few episodes of SNW and notreally sure what to make of it. If they stopped being so childish with all the back talk and lack of professionalism it could be good.
PICARD. Where do I even start! Watched the first couple of episodes and then stopped watching completely. How could they ruin Star Trek so badly. Completely unrecognisable to the TNG I grew up with.

I just seen Balance of Terror one of my favorites so is The Doomsday Machine. I think part of the reason are the guess star actors, Mark Leonard and William Windom. Both actors added so much depth to their characters and of course great stories too.

I even watched the entire first season to see if it get better and it just got worse. It's anti-TNG, not Star Trek at all to me, too blood thirsty.

I know Mark Lenard played a Romulan (in Balance of Terror), a Vulcan (Sarek), and a Klingon (in TMP).
I know he appeared on TOS, TNG, TAS, (not sure about DS9 or Voyager)... he did not appear in ENT or any subsequent series.
I know he appeared in ST movies: TMP, III (SFS), IV (TVH) and VI (TUC).

Rules, I'm wondering if you should add The Animated Series to your list (if you can even find a complete set, that is.)
I remember not liking it as a kid (but I think I was still in the phase where I didn't like TOS either)!
Now that I've learned more about it, I'm wondering if I'd feel differently: the whole hub-bub about Nimoy standing up to get the minority characters to be voiced by their original actors (Sulu & Uhura), the fact that TAS is now considered "canon" in the Trek universe - a continuation of TOS, and just word of mouth that I've heard or read that say some of the stories are actually very good and rival some of the best from TOS.

I didn't even consider Brent Spiner because most of his other characters were kind of derivatives of Data (his brother Lore, his creator, his creator's ancestor, etc.) or his body being taken over by aliens or appearing as various Holodeck characters.
Holodeck - I still don't like the idea - it was like a built-in device to jump the shark whenever they wanted to. Want to tell an out-of-continuity story that can never take place? Just have it happen on the Holodeck... who needs creative writing? ;)
Like Commander Tucker said after experiencing a fully-immersive holo-experience (on an alien ship)... "If we had that, no one would ever leave home or go exploring." (not verbatum, but something to that extent.)

I think there's not much new content that can be added to the franchise unless its context is merely used as a skin to create regular drama, political intrigue, etc.

Then the next day it dawned on my that the crew's uniforms were white in ST The Motion Picture. But what really struck me about that photo is look at Ilea's head it's photoshoped on. I mean those look like her legs and body but the neck is really thick and the head small in proportion.

You can cross check by looking up images for ST-TMP. There were several similar group shots like this one that were unaltered. My only guess is perhaps trying to fill in color to the costumes behind Ilia made her head appear to shrink a bit.

Sorry to post "out of order", but this quizzical little observation occurred to me while catching a few moments of ST-VOY while channel surfing the other day...
Did anyone ever notice that Chakotay's face tattoo over his left eye is the same relative size, shape and has the same placement as Seven-of-Nine's cybernetic implant over her left eye? Kind of weird, isn't it? (Could ancient native Americans have been visited by the Borg?)

Also a Star Trek fan. Started watching in the 90's the TNG where I first discovered Star Trek. But watched the episodes sporadically and never finished the entire show.
Then another successful one was Deep Space Nine which I almost finished :) And I consider it the best one from all series. Never watched the Original series, but I've seen the movies.
The only one which I finished watching is Star Trek Voyager which was interesting but not like DS9.
Enterprise was again interesting but they quit after 4 seasons. Don't know why, I remember it was quite successful though.
Don't like what they did with Discovery - too many parallel universes there.
Have to say that after Voyager - didn't like what Alex Kurtzman did with Star Trek, but apparently Strange New Worlds is quite a success.
....
I was and I will always be a "space opera" fan :) I watched many of them. Also liked Babylon 5 or lately The Expanse which is quite a great show.
Thinking of watching DS9 all over again (and also finish it) since Netflix has them all waiting to be seen :) Excepting Discovery and Strange New Worlds.

Couldn't agree more! Discovery made the Mirror Universe a regular part of the show (swapping regular characters with their Mirror counterparts as running subplots).
The Mirror Universe was great as a one-off in TOS & ENT (and even the fan-made Star Trek Continues made a sequel to the original episode), but too much of a good thing is not always a good thing.

Enterprise got a bit more into the Vulcan culture also evidencing the Human - Vulcan relationship.
Even though they were a close ally to the humans, their Vulcan High Command was pretty secretive and they used to hide many things from the humans :)

I finished the first leg of my Star Trek journey by watching all 79 episodes of the original series plus the pilot, The Cage. This is the umpteenth time I've seen these but it had been over 10 years since I last watched them. I wasn't sure if my fond memories of STTOS would remain intact...they did! I loved re-watching the show and even though I knew the episodes by heart I found new things in each episode to be fascinated by. I'd list my favorite episodes and least favorite too, but it would be hard! I like them all, even though I'll be the first to admit there were a few episodes that were poorly written.
I also wanted to count the number of 'space babes' Captain Kirk kissed. We always hear he had a girl on every episode but I don't think he kissed all that many, but I forgot to count...anybody know the exact number?
I do know the exact number of times it's eluded too that Kirk had sex. Most of those times were in the line of duty, seriously or he was under some alien influence. There was only one time Kirk had sex for the sheer fun of it. Anyone know which episodes?

I almost said he never had sex with humans (as eluded too during the run time of the episodes, that is). But you're right Miramanee was human and her tribe had been brought to that peaceful planet by advanced aliens. So that's the one an only human he slept with, but it was honorable he did marry her first!

...And she got pregnant!
That means David Marcus (Wrath of Khan) had a half-sibling he never knew.
How sad, I just realized that after ST-III both of Kirk's only known children had died.
But then, with Kirk, who knows how man Kirk siblings might be out there. :)

It's always interesting to see this kind of casting information because it gives you an idea of how different the show could have been. (Not necessarily better or worse, just different.)

I once had the same ambition ... until I saw there are close to 900 live-action episodes alone!I finished ST original series for the upteenth time, finished Next Generation which I've a number of times, currently on season 5 of ST Deep Space Nine I believe this is my fourth time watching it. I usually watch one a night after I finished watching the nightly movie. Oh then I watch some lighter fare and currently am watching Hogan's Heroes which I've never seen before.

That sets me off on a nostalgia binge for sure. I grew up on 60s TV. Comedies to name just a few: Get Smart, The Flintstones, Gilligan's Island, The Jetsons, My Favorite Martian, Hogan's Heroes, F Troop, McHale's Navy. Dozens more actually.
Ah, but dramas left the most lasting impressions. Such as: The Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock Presents (I can still remember the theme music), The Prisoner (gotta track that down again), The Invaders (also want to revisit sometime; scared the bejesus outta me), Star Trek of course, Combat! (still seems very authentic and memorable), Rat Patrol, The Avengers, The Outer Limits, The Wild Wild West, Dark Shadows (parents hated it, so only now and then), Smothers Brothers, Mission Impossible, Night Gallery, Rocky & Bullwinkle, Man from Uncle, The Ghost & Mrs. Muir, The Big Valley, Batman, The Saint, The Time Tunnel. I had to do some Googling for a memory aid ... and left out many more than including here. Wonder when we had the time to watch them all!

I was born in the early 60s and watched many of those shows in reruns in the early 70s, though I haven't seen them all. The wife and I started a TV nostalgia kick about 15 years ago by watching an entire run of old TV series. First we watched one of my all time favorite sitcoms Lavern & Shirley, then Happy Days that ran for 11 seasons the last season most of the original cast was gone. Then for some reason I decided to watch Joanie Loves Chachi which was OK and only 2 seasons. Then Mary Tyler Moore show, followed by, you guess it, Rhoda. The original Outer Limits and Twilight Zone. Then Gilligan's Island followed by Batman which I hadn't seen since the late 60s and thought it would be silly but it was good fun. Then The Time Tunnel. And what might be my favorite TV show The Love Boat, followed by, yes, Fantasy Island (the original not one of the reboots). M*A*S*H* and all the episodes of Family Feud game show with Richard Dawson as host.
Probably the biggest binge watch I did was watching in order all of the surviving 757 episodes of What's My Line? which was fascinating to watch for the history alone. After I'm done with Hogan's Hero's I'm not sure what vintage TV show I'll be up for next?

Off topic, but have you ever seen the film Auto Focus (2002)?
It was a movie about Bob Crane's life & death. I kept hoping the film would delve into how Hogan's Heroes was pitched & developed (how do you pitch a "Nazi sit-com" to America 20 years after the war?) Sadly, beyond just a mention, there was little focus (no pun intended) on Hogan's Heroes. The movie was mostly about Crane's sex addiction and weird relationship with John Carpenter (not the famous director).

Looking at the film's description makes me think my wife would hate it, so nix that movie:p I did watch some interesting special features on the Hogan's Heroes DVDs. There was an interview with Bob Crane's widow Sigrid Valdis which is the name she went by as an actress, but she introduced herself on the DVD as Patricia Crane. According to her the show was in deep trouble from critics mad that Hogan's Heroes was seemingly making light of the POWs that had been held in German camps as the show made the Nazis look too benevolent. So reportedly they changed the format in the second season and made the Nazis more deadly dangerous while keeping the comedy.

According to her the show was in deep trouble from critics mad that Hogan's Heroes was seemingly making light of POW held in a German camp with funny Nazis. So reportedly they changed the format in the second season and made the Nazis more deadly dangerous while keeping the comedy. As selling point to the critics the show's PR people pointed out that many of the cast members were themselves Jewish and Robert Clary who played a French POW was actually in a German concentration camp, half of his family died in the concentration camp...and so the cast and show was poking fun at the Nazis and having the last laugh at them.
Interesting. I did know about Robert Clary. Also I read an interview with Verner Klemperer (Colonel Klink) asking why he, as a German Jew who escaped the war, would play Nazis in movies & on TV. He responded that he'd take any role as a Nazi in order to mock & disparage them.
You're right, your wife probably would not like Auto Focus - it's an uncomfortable film about a disturbing subject especially since Bob Crane seemed like such a nice average guy (he was also a drummer). It does have some interesting performances by Greg Kinnear and Willem DaFoe as the main characters, though.
There was one part in the film where the actor playing Richard Dawson gives Crane advice. It's made clear the two didn't really like each other while making Hogan's Heroes, but the advice Dawson gives is for Crane to not keep so much porn laying around in his car and trailer. Dawson ended up being right as Crane's porn addiction did ultimately end up hurting his career (and possibly even cost him his life).

So many programs, so little time!
All that said, the show we binged compulsively like addicts: all nine seasons of The Middle (from the 2010s). I grew up in the midwest, and it was just so authentic and warmly funny. Hardly a bad episode among them. Enjoyed the heck out of it (insider's pun).
Better let you get back to your regularly scheduled Star Trek thread here ...

I'm sure that it's much easier to watch all the Star Trek series multiple times when you don't watch any current shows on streaming services or cable TV.

I haven't watched Hogan's Heroes in many years, but I've been watching a lot of reruns of the old games shows including Match Game and Family Feud with Richard Dawson.

Those are a whole bunch of shows that bring back memories. I love My Favorite Martian, Get Smart, and F-Troop. But you left off my favorite 60s comedy, The Dick Van Dyke Show.
Of the dramas, the ones I miss the most are The Ghost & Mrs. Muir, The Saint, and Time Tunnel.
Star Trek, The Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and Batman still air in reruns on MeTV, so I watch those every weekend.
I would love to find the show Ben Casey streaming somewhere. I used to watch that every night when I was younger.

My mother-in-law lives in an assisted living and she only likes to watch the court shows, (like Judge Judy and The People's Court), and the old game shows, and we visit her every day, so we've been watching a lot of those shows recently. I forgot how much fun some of the game shows were, and some of them are educational too. :)

Most of Happy Days was great, but it went downhill after Richie and Ralph left the show.
Joanie Loves Chachi sucked, and that's coming from someone who had a huge crush on Scott Baio when I was younger.
If you want to watch a good spinoff of Happy Days, try Mork and Mindy.
The Love Boat, and Fantasy Island were great back in the 70s, but neither show stood the test of time for me.

It's made clear the two didn't really like each other while making Hogan's Heroes...That's interesting as on the Hogan's Heroes extra features there were some recordings of Bob Crane's radio show. On one of the segments he interviews Richard Dawson and a couple other HH cast members. Bob Crane kept calling Dawson's wife Diana Dors by the wrong name, calling her Deanna Dors. Dawson eventually corrected him but didn't seem to mind, but I wonder if that was a little dig at Dawson. Dawson starts explaining a humorous story in answer to Crane's question and Dawson goes way off tangent and monopolized the air time which seemed pretty odd. I wonder if that was due to his dislike of Bob Crane?

I just found this article online:
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Release Date (https://whatculture.com/tv/star-trek-strange-new-worlds-season-3-release-date)
The answer is based on a reply to a question from a Facebook user in the Netherlands. The reply was from SkyShowtime, who holds the streaming rights for Strange New Worlds (and other Star Trek properties) in the Netherlands, as well as in the Nordics, Spain, Portugal and Central and Eastern Europe.
Facebook User: When do you have Lower Decks? And when is a new season of Strange New Worlds coming?
SkyShowtime: That's a good question. You're a real Star Trek fan from what I read! Nothing is known about Lower Decks (yet), but season 3 of Strange New Worlds will be online on August 1st. So please be patient! [Thursday 6 March 2025]
For season two of Strange New Worlds, SkyShowtime broadcast the day after Paramount+. Following that rule, July 31st is a Thursday this year, which would be on form.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Trailer Includes Classic Throwback To TOS & Introduces The Holodeck To The Enterprise (https://screenrant.com/star-trek-strange-new-worlds-season-3-trailer/)
Paramount+ has released the first official teaser for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, teasing all the new adventures to come across the show's 10-episode season. This includes beginning footage that is reminiscent of The Original Series, including a retro filter that makes it look like it's from the 1960s.

I loved TNG and DS9 and of course TOS, I was an avid fan and had them all on VHS, but I gave up half way through Voyager, I never really warmed to Janeway or Chakotay and found Neelix annoying...not even Jeri Ryan could lure me back!
Since then I've only ever watched a few episodes of Enterprise but have heard season 3 is really good, and the last trek I saw was Picard season 3 (just that season) which served as a great send off.

Loved the first show and TNG and I never got into DS9 but I was the same with Voyager...followed it for a while and then got tired of it and found the Jeri Ryan stuff eye-rolling...not for her looks but for the lazy reintroduction of the Borg...it felt like it was them running out of ideas. I liked most of the movies but stopped after First Contact which I didn't think was that good.
