This thread is kind of a counter thread to the "Things that annoy you..." thread (which, btw, is one of my favorite threads here)!

I just thought for the new year we could use a thread that deals with the things that compensate for life's annoyances and help us remember those things or situations we are grateful for.

First up, I'll offer a little website called "movieforums.com" :)

In a word, ART.

In a few more words:

Music:

Impresses:

Ensemble vocal européen / Philippe Herreweghe - Come falda di neve from Lagrime di San Pietro (1994), composed by Roland de Lassus
https://youtu.be/Ph75Q99XgWw?si=wxeHc1JI6SwOc9U7

Pleases:

Junko Yagami - MISS D.J. from Communication (1985)

https://youtu.be/lw1LwbYcbO4?si=Li4_MYWUHH8mvR9E

Makes me happy:

Noriko Sakai - Guanbare (1988) (Single)

https://youtu.be/_yDvSEim2_Y?si=OsMKcDSP59iWBRKX

Film:

Impresses:

Hiroshi Teshigahara - Woman in the Dunes (1964)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9xlqmyqftU

Pleases:

John Woo - Once a Thief (1991)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GOx5UwnZD4

Makes me happy:

Raoul Walsh - The Strawberry Blonde (1941)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUrSwmp4CjI

Painting:

Impresses:

Fra Angelico - Coronation of the Virgin

https://i.imgur.com/1vbAAyk.png

Pleases:

Edward Hopper - Nighthawks

https://i.imgur.com/0878Dy8.png

Makes me happy:

Matsuura Shiori - Hot Days

https://i.imgur.com/sQk2VYE.png

Literature:

Impresses:

Fyodor Dostoevsky - The Brothers Karamazov

“Above all, don't lie to yourself. The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to a point that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others. And having no respect he ceases to love.”

Pleases:

Yukio Mishima - Patriotism

“At his leisure, the lieutenant allowed the unforgettable spectacle to engrave itself upon his mind. With one hand he fondled the hair, with the other he softly stroked the magnificent face, implanting kisses here and there where his eyes lingered. The quiet coldness of the high, tapering forehead, the closed eyes with their long lashes beneath faintly etched brows, the set of the finely shaped nose, the gleam of teeth glimpsed between full, regular lips, the soft cheeks and the small, wise chin…”

Makes me happy:

Jun'ichirō Tanizaki - The Key

“After looking at myself in the mirror, I looked at Satsuko. I could not believe that we were creatures of the same species. The uglier the face in the mirror, the more extraordinarily beautiful Satsuko seemed. If that ugly face were only uglier, I thought regretfully, Satsuko would look even more beautiful.”

Percentage-wise, it is 100% easier not to do things than to do them. And so much fun not to do them, especially when you are supposed to do them. In terms of, like, instant relief, cancelling plans is like heroin. It is an amazing feeling. Such instant joy.--John Mulaney

Things that always make happy.
1) Smell of the moist soil after the monsoon season's first rainfall.

2) Understated warm sound of a nice Cedar top, classical guitar.

3) Sitting on the beach behind my ancestral home at nights, & listening to the waves lashing. Even better if the moon is out & it partially lits up the sea.

4) The song 'O Sajana Barkha Bahar Aayi' from the movie Parakh.

5) Running into my first crush (has happened only once in the past decade) or looking at her pictures when I clean the cupboard & find photo albums from school & college days.

6) My mum making any of my favourite dishes.

7) Eating ice cream at midnight.

I’m grateful for my excellent health. Which, according to my internist, is 99% due to the fact that I walk for 2 hours every day. I don’t take good health for granted, that’s for sure.

One in 8 American women has breast cancer. I’ve managed to dodge that bullet, which is something else I’m grateful for.

I realized this morning that I am impressed by the clock radio in my bedroom.

https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/tV8AAOSwhDdiPkYG/s-l1200.jpg

This is because it is at least 40 years old and still works great!
The only thing wrong with it is the labels are worn off the buttons on top (but since I have them fairly memorized, it's not a problem).

I say it's at least 40 years old (and maybe older) because I remember buying it when I was in college (which I started when I was 17 and I am now 59) and I do remember having a different one in high school that had bright blue numbers (while this "newer" one has red numbers)!

I think I bought it at "Korvettes" or maybe it had become "Caldor's" by then (how's that for nostalgia?)

My previous one had a dimmer switch, but was still too bright! (Which is probably why I chose the Magnavox with the red digits!) :D

Merry New Year, everybody! It's exactly one year later since I started this thread!

Right around New Year's day this year, I downloaded an adblocker called PIE.
So far, it's gotten rid of all ads at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of YouTube videos and reversed all the troubles I was having with non-stop ads on YouTube. Thing is, I had an adblocker on my computer, but YouTube had made it so you couldn't have THAT blocker in place and still view videos. I was skeptical of the PIE adblocker, but so far there's been no strings attached, it only took seconds to activate, and it's worked perfectly.

There is another kind of activity associated with PIE - where you allegedly can get paid for watching ads. I didn't select this option.

I never heard of PIE though I do use an adblocker but not sure if it blocks ads in YouTube videos or not? I don't really watch YouTube videos much. I do see PIE is available for Chrome browsers and browsers based on Chrome.

Yeah, that and several other reasons made me skeptical. After two weeks, I'm still a little skeptical (waiting for the other proverbial shoe to drop) Heck, I'm still waiting for my viewscreen to open up and hit me in the face with a PIE! But until that happens and while I can look at YouTube without incessant ads holding up and popping up during every video, I am for the moment content.

Dawg I just want to make movies, play table top or video games, watch films, and goof off, all with my friends and family. Shit let's go yo. Enough of this boring minimum wage peon working crap. That's dumb. I want to have fun. Let's make a film like Truman Show where people are actually part of a video game under the control of some evil corporation. There; I included my specific activities. I'm very tired and a little lonely.

I thought of something else that's more substantial; the feeling of getting in bed after a shower. I shower at nights so I can relax after a day of anxiety, and I needn't worry about a time crunch, and I always feel great climbing into bed after the shower.

Another one is stretching my core and upper legs, especially after being in the same position for some time. I learned about some easy stretches for when I'm lying down and my back hurts, and they really help. I have issues sitting still vis ADHD, so I constantly shift, and my knees always feel good when I move them. My hips never feel good but I can make them feel less bad vis walking a short distance. I learned that complacency is horrible for the hips and lower back, so I love finding reasons to get up and move every so often since my hips and lower back are pretty bad

This week I have learned that I love omeprazole.

Dare I ask what is omeprazole?

It's an antacid. I have bad heartburn without it, which I haven't had it for like four days, so I'm really nauseated. The pharmacy was being slow about filling it. Now we have to brave the wintery conditions in order to go get it. The reason I say I learned I love it is because I was exaggerating, and also now I know what happens when I don't have it; horrible stomach pains.

No no; table top, like D&D and Paranoia, where the characters are written up on a sheet, dice are rolled, and role-playing happens. Sometimes there are maps where we move characters hither and thither. They're not exactly board games though there are similarities.

Sure, I hear ya. Not a big D&D guy, but I am an avid board gamer and I do still play some video games when I get the chance, just not as much these days. Lately been playing Dune: Imperium Uprising, which is an excellent board game that combines Worker Placement/Resource gathering with deckbuilding.

I also really like the game Root a lot, but it's pretty mean spirited (while also being excessively adorable with its artwork, which makes it somehow even more meaner) and can end up making your friends consider pushing you down flights of stairs and the like. Fantastic game, super strategic, and draws you in with its deceptively cute demeanor before kicking you while you are down.

Those sound fun too. I do enjoy board games as well. I just prefer the table top games.

Root sounds pretty interesting. It reminds me a bit of Paranoia in that, while the Troubleshooters, as the players are called, work together, they also have secret missions and are encouraged to deceive and betray their fellow players. Online it doesn't work as well, we play via Discord voice chat, but otherwise we have the full-on flavor of the game.

Do you have people who play them with you consistently, or at least who are usually game for a game? I find the hardest part of multiplayer games is finding a time for everyone to sit down and play. Thankfully for the two games I'm playing right now we have a consistent time every week (although sometimes life happens and we shift things).

I do have a steady play group, although we are still reeling from one of our dear friends and regular players passing away suddenly in November, and the sessions haven't been the same since. We are still getting together, but it hasn't been the same since.

That said, the game must go on, or something like that. ;)

Yikes. Sucks he died. Yeah I'm in a consistent D&D group put together by the local library, which I thought was cool they do that. I think there are three game D&D groups that meet every week. I decided to stick with one.

Paranoia I'm trying to keep consistent, and after my horrible health interruption last weekend, I decided I should've played anyway and will be ready for it this upcoming Saturday. It's an awesome game, although not many people know about it. The goal is for me to keep a group going on Saturdays, at least until the campaign ends.

Another thing that makes me happy is making short films. Right now I'm working on a short where a character manipulates the real world with pictures. It's a sequel to one I did last year. So far it's coming together well, although I've only had one day of shooting. Hopefully tonight I can do more.

I thought I'd mention that the kiddos and I dabble in the board game scene every so often as well. It came to mind because we just finished playing a round of Sorry at the youngster's bequest. It was fun and there wasn't too much negativity. The two kiddos didn't like their pieces being bumped. I kept the rules fair and we played well together. It was fun. The youngster prefer board games to video games so we get one out now and then. He also likes to build with Legos which I helped him do.

We like to play games with our daughter that are cooperative vs the game instead of head to head etc., She is a Harry Potter fan, so we often play Hogwart's Battle with her, which is a game in which the players cooperate to build decks of spells and actions while battling a stack of villains from the films. It's a fun game, while maybe a little RNG dependent. It's got a rich theme and she really has a lot of fun playing it.

You may not be a fan of that IP, but there are plenty of Co-op games out there that are fun to play with kids.

I finished Hammer's Slammers the other day and needed a book to read vis I had appointments yesterday except we hadn't made it to the library so my mom suggested Harry Potter. I am now reading Prisoner of Azkaban. It's not cheating; I read Philosopher's Stone and Chamber of Secrets a couple of years ago in their original British before reading Lord of the Rings, so I'm resuming the series where I left off.

I've been gaming most of today. I'll find time for the book in due course. I do enjoy Harry Potter as a book series. I just dislike the movies. I apologize I was not clear. That is my mistake. The books are awesome. I try not to compare them to other fantasy series, including Lord of the Rings. I think that's disingenuous because it's its own thing.

One thing that makes me happy is when my kiddos are happy. Of course I get extreme anxiety when people are angry which plays into it some. I have the clinical version of anxiety so there's that. I do what I can to make them feel positive.

I rediscovered that reading Harry Potter makes me happy. I'm re-reading Harry Potter in the original British, and am picking up where I left off; Prisoner of Azkaban. Setting aside some time to read it is fairly easy and I've been enjoying the book at my typically-slow pace. I usually read a chapter every night, at least I have done roughly four of the past five nights, so it should go fairly quickly. I may read more than that some times too. It's a minimum.

The youngster needed help with his toy building project, so we worked together on it. That was fun. He's good at stuff like that. He liked the end result and had to show it off (it was a little Kinect kart racer) (it's only like six inches long and three wide) (the thing is just to have fun building). The youngster was getting upset because he needed help and I was playing in the other room, so I gave him a deal; I help him until either it's finished or we're frustrated with it, and then I can come back to my game. He was fine with that. I try my best to keep everyone calm. Maybe not "happy" because they're sometimes calm and unhappy but I try to keep them the level-headed.

The “original British”?

American and British English are different dialects so there are differences between the two regions and their usage of the language, so when Harry Potter came to the States, things were edited to accommodate the difference in syntax. It's mostly subtle things. Like in Prisoner of Azkaban it says "by torch light" instead of "with a flash light", stuff like that. Similar to how movies lose flavor when dubbed, a book loses flavor when adjusted for a region's different dialect, so it's fun reading Harry Potter the way it was originally written, vis Rowling is British.

Let's see, today I ordered my tickets to Mickey 17, and tickets for a museum exhibit I want to check out next week. And tomorrow tickets go on sale for the local minor league baseball club, which signals the end of this winter chill and the beginning of getting outside and enjoying the spring weather.

And all of that makes me very happy.

After my shower tonight I got under the blankets and I could feel my feet let go and just relax. That felt so good. That made me happy. Indoor waterfalls wash away the worries of a world-weary Whicker to the point of being close to sleep. Say sayonara to Sunday as the superb soda slides through the speaking center of the skull to the staunch stomach where sustenance sails to serenity.

I suddenly like fishing video games. I've only completed two, and only in the Legend of the River King series, but man were they fun. Tonight I ordered Bass Hunter 64, so we'll see how it goes. It looks like a great game and I'm really looking forward to it.

Music mainly. Music always makes me happy. Hence I’m hardly ever without my headphones.
