A question about profile banners

I'm thinking of adding a profile banner to my user profile, but whenever I do the top of the image keeps getting cut off. What exactly is the size limitation, and what does the ratio have to be?

If your profile banner image gets the top cut off, it needs to be wider and or shorter.

Under Profile>Edit Your Profile Banner it says: NOTE: the max upload size is approximately 2.5MB. Your image will scale up or down as necessary, but for best results, use roughly a 3:1 width to height ratio. You probably seen that already, so maybe this will help:

Look at my profile banner, it fit's nicely and it's dimensions are 21.2 inches by 9.4 inches. This is the image I used for it.

See the black area on the left side, I did that as I didn't want the image under the links.
