Martin Scorsese and Mark Wahlberg are the money men behind this expensively mounted HBO series set in Atlantic City 1920, the first episode actually directed by Scorsese himself. The show stars Steve Buscemi as Enoch "Nucky" Thompson, a slick talking politician working both sides of the issue of Prohibition. Michael Pitt plays an ex-soldier named Jimmy Darmody looking for fast money and a new career with Nucky. Big bouquet to the production design team for recreating the boardwalk in 1920. Love the 1920 incubator. Loved thee Bible para-phrasing of the loaves and the fish story. Had a feeling Jimmy was a hothead, being ex-military and all. Haven't figured out where Michael Shannon's character fits in here yet. Loving the mixture of real life and fictional characters too. OOOH, Shannon's playing a fed...didn't see that coming. I love Lucy, she's hysterical. Jimmy really doesn't have the brains to be a double agent. hat's horrible what happened to Margaret. Is Nucky responsible for his wife's death? I'm assuming that was Margaret's husband on the b oat. TYhat restaurant n Chicago was breathtaking. Interesting show, too bad Scorsese couldn't commit full time to it because his touch is all over the pilot. Think I'll keep watching anyway.

Season1 Ep 2. So this show seems to be taking place pretty early in the career of Al Capone. Can't wait to find out exactly what happened to Nucky's wife because he seems consumed with guilt about it. Michael Shannon gives me a chill down my back every time he appears onscreen. Margaret was clearly expecting Nucky, not his brother. OK, I'm missing something, why is Elias threatening t take Margaret's children away from her? Didn't realize Nucky had all of the Boardwalk in his pocket. Liking the relationship between the Thompson brothers so far. Love that the latest technology in 1920 was the vacuum cleaner. Jimmy and his wife have sex while their son is in the room? Michael Pitt has this real DiCaprio quality that I like. "If you want to be a gangster in my town, you gotta pay for the privilege." Jimmy needs to catch his head before he doesn't have one. I am predicting now that before the season is over, Jimmy's wife will take his son and walk out on him. Jimmy shouldn't take his troubles out on the operator. Not sure if I agree with Margaret's feelings about Charity but understand her wanting to return Nucky's money. Who was the bloody stranger in the woods?

Season1 Ep 3, here we go. Great to see Michael Kenneth Williams join the cast. He was a great actor. Luciano wants to get taken care of as long as nobody knows about it. I wonder how long it's going to take Nucky to realize what a liability Lucy could be. Nucky really did send Margaret to a shop. I thought it was going to be a burlesque house. Loved that plaid suit Buscemi was wearing when Eddie Cantor was singing. How did I know Van Alden's writ was fake? For some reason, that shot of the baby incubator store right next to the salt water taffy store made me chuckle. Loved Van Alden expecting a dentist to bring a dying man back to life. Michael Shannon deserves an Emmy for listening to that translation and keeping a straight face. Loved that scene with Nucky and Gillian...a whole lot going on under the surface there. Lucy kills me, can't see Nucky putting up with her for much longer. That last scene with Jimmy and his girl was a heartbreaker. Can't believe they did that to that man right in front of his family. They couldn't wait until after they had left?

OK, going to ep 4 of Season 1. Jimmy's not wasting much time upon arriving in Chicago. Lucy cracks me up every time she appears onscreen. Loved the referencing of Lillian Gish. Little disappointed that Nucky is only using Chalkie to get the black vote. Loved Gillian's handling of Luciano. it's kind of unsettling hearing terms like "darkies" and "coons", terms I find way more offensive than the N word. Love watching the alleged genesis of Al Capone. What kind of restaurant employee would set a table with a wine glass with lipstick on it? I get the point of the scene, that's ridiculous and should have gotten that employee fired. Loving Stephen Graham as Al Capone. Can't believe Capone got 50% out of that guy. He might pay for that down the line though. Chalkie had that klan leader sweating, didn't he? "Nothing there but six white men, twelve foot of rope and the pepperwood tree they hung him from." Thank you for not showing us exactly what Chalkie did with that wrench. The ego of Nucky planning his own surprise party. They're certainly taking their time with this thing with Nucky and Margaret. They've got multiple seasons why not? Margaret was bold with those political bigshots. The chemistry between Steve Buscemi and Kelly MacDonald is heating up nicely. That was Geoffrey Pierson playing the Senator? I know that voice anywhere.

Season 1 ep 5 on deck. At some point, I'm seeing Elias really turn on his brother one day. He's so jealous of him he can't see straight. Nucky really can't see the feeling that the Eidow Schroeder is developing for him? Pearl is using liquid opium to heal? Loving Dana Ivey as the head of the temperance league. Why did Margaret ask Nucky about the soda bread? Pearl is going to lose her job because Jimmy is turning her into a junkie. Was that Dominic Chianese at the Celtic Dinner? Why did Pearl do that? Why was Neary the only one arrested? Shea Wigham was very good in this episode. Wow, got the first kiss a lot sooner than I thought we would.

OK, let's try ep 6 of the first season. I'm guessing that was Nucky's monmey that guy got suckered into giving up. Now that he's kissed Margaret, how long is it going to take for him to dump Lucy, who I know won't go quietly. At least Margaret is smart enough not to expect a wedding ring from Nucky. Can't believe the way Capone treats his own family. Margaret needs to watch her step with Lucy right now. Buscemi was channeling Brando in that scene where he was laying down the law to Luciano. I love the running bit of Nucky hating the way his assistant knocks on the door every time he does it. Can't wait until Lucy finds out he moved Margaret and her kids into a new house. Jimmy and Capone sure know how to take a meeeting. Why would Capone knock on Jimmy's door and not say anything? Seriously? What Nucky did to Margaret sucks. The reveal of Van Elder's inner demons was quite the eye opener, did not see that coming.

commit to this show. it’s the one and only time hbo didn’t **** up the ending.
but season 2 is easily the best
It would probably sneak into my all-time Top 5 TV shows. You can see the seams at some points, and there are some characters that overstay their welcome, but it's neatly acted and consistently good.

Season 1 Ep 7. Dominic Chianese was heartbreaking in his opening scene. Didn't know Jimmy had pins in his leg. Still hoping we get to learn what happened to Mabel...Nucky gets very uptight every time her name is mentioned. I was surprised that Eli was willing to take in his dad, I don't know why. So glad Chalky didn't fall for that guy's offer, it wasn't making any sense. Lucy just might be the most self-absorbed television character ever. She just expects Nucky to drop whatever he's doing anytime she wants something. Margaret's instinct about Nucky seem to be on the money. Nice to see she's not deluging herself about him. Didn't realize the guy hassling Chalky was Meyer Lansky. What's the point of Jimmy turning himself in with a fake name? When did Jimmy's girl start getting involved with Nucky? Buscemi was wonderful conveying the pain of Nucky's childhood, even without the dialogue. Loving Jack Huston as Richard Harrow and I like the relationship he's developing with Jimmy. I knew Nucky didn't send Lansky to Chalky. Margaret really needs to learn how to read the room where Nucky is concerned. Dabney Coleman finally hit the canvas. Loved Nucky's rhyming table blessing. I like that Nucky shared the baseball mitt story with Margaret...a real eye opener. I love Jimmy's razor sharp memories of his time in the military. Nic work, Jimmy. I knew he wouldn't let that guy walk. Wow...Nucky had it fixed up just to burn it down.

Season Ep 8 on deck. Eli is harboring some serious resentments toward his brother can't wait to see how they will manifest themselves. Loved Nucky buying the presidential suite. Love the Ritz Carlton production design, just breathtaking. "What are you two whispering about? Americans don't whisper." Can't wait to see a good old Krystle/Alexis catfight between Lucy and Margaret, the slap just didn't do it for me. Can Van Alden actually do what he's doing to Angela? That can't possibly be legal. Nice to see David Aaron Baker...have always liked him. Christopher McDonald! God, everybody is popping up in this series. Did that Senator actually use the word "trollop". Can't remember the last time I've heard that word used. The costumes in that party scene were stunning. Whoa...more Nucky backstory...a deceased son? Michael Shannon was bone chilling in that scene with Van Alden and his wife. How does a projector catch on fire? That red plaid suit Buscemi had on was incredible. The Nucky/Jimmy reunion was properly intense. Hope Eli gets the opportunity to learn how to read a room. Can't believe Nucky trusts Margaret or anybody else for that matter with that ledger book. Pitt and Buscemi nailed that scene after Eli was hurt. If that ledger could talk. Margaret should not have even answered that phone, let alone identify herself. Is all this stuff about Warren Harding dramatized for this series? why did Van Alden send his wife Angela's money if he didn't want her to have the surgery?
Gideon58
09-26-23, 06:26 PM
Now up to ep 9 of Season one. Just read that the principal characters on this series are not fictional, which I didn't realize up until now. Warren Harding's baby mama, Nan Britton, seems a little clueless and probably headed for a whole lot of heartbreak. The shopkeeper is right about Margaret having power she's not aware of. I'm pleased that Jimmy made Nucky clarify exactly what he wanted. Did those guys actually sign those contracts without reading them? I'm wondering now if the shopkeeper was lying to Margaret just to extort money out of Nucky. I really need for Angela to find out about Van Alden taking her mail. The Jimmy/Angela reunion was smoking hot. I get a big ol' smile on my face every time they mention a street on the Monopoly board. I hope Jimmy and Angela can find their way back to each other. Nucky needs to watch that sleazy deputy. Why are they Van Alden looking like an idiot? Why do they have him grilling Jimmy with questions that they know they aren't getting answers to? Who was that guy Billy? "The legal system is not your ticket to freedom." I'd pay good money to see Nucky break Jimmy out of jail. Haven't been able to figure out who Dabney Coleman's character is yet. Have no idea why Van Alden's guy killed that prisoner. The actress playing Sophie Tucker was terrific. The boardwalk finale held more than one surprise.

Season 1 Ep 10. Richard's makeup is incredible. The tape kept malfunctioning during the scene when that agent killed that witness so I never saw exactly what happened, but I can't believe he's getting away with it. If someone could let me know exactly what happened I would be grateful, I re-wound it four times and it kept malfunctioning right at that moment. "Success means enemies, which you'll soon discover when women receive the vote." "Nothing says I'm sorry like money." One thing I love about this show is the look we get a young Al Capone before he become the legend he did. It was sweet watching Richard break the ice with Margaret's kids. The kids played that entire scene perfectly. I feel a little bad for Van Alden...he has the whole story he just can't prove any of it. Loving the chemistry between Steve Buscemi and Kelly MacDonald, even though their characters are from two different worlds. Poor Angela...thrown under the bus by her own son. Another bone-chilling turn from Michael Shannon in that scene with Margaret. Al Capone was a riot in that scene in the synagogue. "We're going to make him the richest corpse in New York." really don't want to see Angela leave Jimmy, he really needs her. Jack Huston is just great as Richard Harrow. Is alcohol another Van Alden demon? Van Alden and Lucy? Who saw that coming? Wow, Chalkie killed that guy with his bare hands. Well, at least Lucy won't be alone when Nucky officially dumps her. Has h e officially dumped her yet? If he did, I missed it. Solid episode.

09-27-23, 04:52 PM
On to Ep 11. Did Harry Houdini really have a brother named Hardeen? The tension between Jimmy and Angela is so palatable right now, I hate it. So Van Alden is not buying the way the witness died? I'm shocked. Michael Badalucco was a little over the top during that party scene. The Commodore is Jimmy's father? Hope we get some backstory on this relationship. Does Nucky know that the Commodore is Jimmy's father? I can't believe Angela is planning to leave the country. OK, the death of this witness has just been clarified to my satisfaction. "Ride me like you used to and I'll soak the pillows through." Has Margaret had her fill of Nucky? Damn, butter wouldn't melt in Gillian's mouth. My question regarding Nucky and the Commodore has also been answered. I don't know if it's intentional, but there's a very incestual undertone to Jimmy and Gillian's relationship, She always seems to be looking at him like she wants to have sex with him. Didn't really understand why Van Alden was hassling those black folks at the baptism. Did Nucky really tell Margaret she had no right to decide whether or not she wants another child? At least the truth is out between Nucky and Margaret now. And it's nice to see that Margaret is not the goody two shoes she pretends to be. Interesting reveal that the Commodore might not be dying of natural causes. Something's got to give between the Thompson brothers. Have to wonder if Gillian poisoned the Commodore. I think Nucky is lying about Eli resigning, I think he fired him. I hope Angela will go back and try to work things out with Jimmy now. "Temptation knows no rank, Detective Sepso." I can't believe Van Alden did that in front of all those people and you just know somehow he's going to get away with it. How Michael Shannon didn't win an Emmy for this show is a msytery to me, he gives me chills every time he's onscreen. Love that final shot of the boardwalk at night.
Gideon58
09-27-23, 06:33 PM
And I'm set for the first season finale of Boardwalk Empire. Sepso died of a heart attack. Van Alden is really going to be allowed to get away with this? His boss threw him under the bus two episodes ago and now he's begging Van Alden to stay? Now that he's killed his partner? Love the way everybody cleared the room when Chalkie said he had to talk. Not sure why Nucky wanted to help that maid. Was it ever confirmed that Rothstein was a player in the Black Sox scandal or is he being framed? Jimmy having PTSD is not a shocker, but he doesn't seem to realize that's what it is, I guess it probably didn't have a name back in the 1920's. Thrilled that Jimmy and Angela have decided to give it another go. Nucky's hold on Margaret seems to be loosening. The story of what happened to Enoch's family was tragic, beautifully brought to fruition by Steve Buscemi. "We all have to decide for ourselves how much sin we can live with." I have to wonder why those people at the Baptism didn't go to the authorities. That Mary has major cajones sending Angela a postcard. The question of Rothstein's innocence in the scandal has been addressed to my satisfaction. m I'm glad Eli is still on the canvas even if he's not sheriff anymore. Nucky is unprecedented in the art of covering his tracks and keeping his hands clean. Eli is going to continue to be a problem that Nucky can't throw money at. I'm glad Eli got his job back. That was a great scene between Buscemi and Pitt in the hallway. God, how dim is this Nan woman? I'm glad things aren't over between Nucky and Margaret. Just enough unanswered questions to have me curious about season two.

PTSD in the 20s was only ever known as shell shock, and the belief was once you recovered from the initial event you’d be OK.
Boy we humans were pretty stupid back then.
Season 2 is probably the best season of any show I have ever watched. I stand by that.

09-28-23, 01:52 PM
OK, let's do it...the second season opener! Nice to see Richard Harrow moving up in the ranks. Van Alden already left Atlantic City? Don't like that. The Klan with machine guns? Machine Guns? Did not see that coming.. Glad Chalkie got one of them. I see Margaret still hasn't realized that Nucky will never be the man she wants him to be. Jimmy's relationship with his mother is still creeping me out. She's got to go. Glad Van Alden hasn't left town yet. Van Alden appears to be the most unhappily married television character I've ever seen. Capone is becoming a real ticking time bomb. Is it me, or are the bills used for money on this show WAY too big to look real? "If Jesus came to Atlantic City, the places he wouldn't go." For some reason, I was surprised with the reveal that Chalkie has a family. Is Nucky that naive that he thinks the Klan can be controlled. Loved Kelly MacDonald's costume in that scene with the nun. The Commodore is in the Klan? Did I miss something> Jimmy's working for his father now? The Commodore's monologue about his hunting exploits was a waste of screentime. Nucky is playing a very dangerous game of race relations. That is so creepy that those guys came to the funeral in their robes and hoods. Shannon nailed that raid scene and his wife looked terrified and aroused at the same time. Is something going to happen between Angela and Richard? Jimmy would lose his mind. Jack Huston is just heartbreaking as Richard. Loved that Teddy was expecting a beating from Nucky. I see Nucky still thinks he can throw money at any problem. Lucy's given Van Alden a tab? Can't believe it took this long to see Nucky handcuffed. I'm assuminig Jimmy's gift was from his father.

09-28-23, 04:56 PM
OK, Season two, ep 2. Nitppick: No prisoner, even way back in 1920, would be allowed to keep his cigarettes. Michael Stuhlbarg was chilling in that scene with Jimmy. Believe it or not, Margaret's reaction to Nucky's arrest played exactly as I expected it to. It's time for Chalkie to stop believing everything that Nucky tells him. I don't think Jimmy and Luciano will ever be able to peacefully co-exist. Nucky handled that press conference. The Commodore has made quite the recovery...the last two episodes of season one, he looked like he was at death's door. Is this the beginning of the end of the Thompson brothers? "When you come face to face with destiny, do you want to be the bear? Or do you want to be holding the shotgun?" Well, Chalkie's lawyer MUST be good if he's Jewish. Why was it important to reveal the fact that Chalkie was illiterate at this time? Jim Neary's got to go...he seems to be the Commodore's # 1 toadie, not to mention the fact that he's being played by an actor I hate. Why do they keep trying to make us think that Jimmy and Luciano can co-exist? There seems to be a bit of sexual tension between Owen Slater and Margaret. Can't wait for Nucky to find out who took that ledger. I think Nucky really loves his brother, but if it came down to him or Eli, he would throw Eli under the bus in a hot minute. Eli definitely seems torn and conflicted right now. That was awesome watching Chalkie handle his business without moving a muscle. Enjoyed Jimmy's walk in the park too. Margaret blew me away...she plans to stand by her man, I was expecting her to betray him.

Let's take a look at ep 3 of Season Two. Cannot believe that Mr. Pompous, Van Alden has gotten Lucy pregnant. Can't wait for his wife to find out. Is there any chance that baby could be Nucky's? It's sweet the way Margaret wants to help Nucky save money. Damian seems to be becoming expendable. Stephen Graham was great in that scene where Capone meets Nucky for the first time. So Nucky did officially dump Lucy. Capone seems to be working really hard to disguise his grief over his father's death. It seems like it might become important later. Did Eli's dad refer to Nucky as Eli? Nucky was so sweet to Margaret when they talked about Paris. Jimmy really needs to get Gillian out of his house before she destroys his marriage. How does Lucy expect to be in a show while she's pregnant. And she can't have not known that Van Alden wouldn't have it. DIdn't realize during his first appearance that Christopher McDonald was playing the attorney general. It's kind of fun actually watching Nucky sweat. :Well if you need me to tell you sir, you need me moret than I thought." Could have knocked me over with a feather when Margaret sat doiwn and drank with her maids. :That was only war, this is Atlantic City." That was totally messed up what Nucky said to Jimmy about his mother. Owen's not wasting anytime getting his foot in the door. OMG...Margaret...you little dickens.
Gideon58
09-29-23, 05:39 PM
Season 2 ep 4. "If you had a brain, you'd be dangerous." What's going on with Dabney Coleman's eyebrows in this episode? The nude body stocking that Gretchen Mol was wearing in the same scene was totally visible. Owen is not even trying to be discreet with Margaret. It was nice to actually have a scene with Chalkie and his entire family. Richard seems to be drawn to Angela, but i can't see him doing that to Jimmy. I don't understand why Gillian is lying about what happened to the Commodore. It's creepy the way Gillian has no shame about her relationship with Jimmy. Our first look at Rothstein's marriage looked like a marriage of appearance or convenience...not a lot of passion there. Wow, those ladies really read Chalkie the riot act. It was good to see that Van Alden's people are aware of some of his proclivities. Why did I get the feeling that Margaret trying to cut the staff's salaries was done without Nucky's knowledge? She seems obsessed with saving money and Nucky keeps telling her everything's fine. Nice to see Wiilliam Forsythe as the butcher. You know the Mayor's behavior at this party is come back and bite him in the ass at some point. Rose Van Alden redefines "clingy". Loved the scene of Richard sitting for Angela, it reminded me of Rose posing for Jack in Titanic. So was Chalkie taking out his anger with Nucky on his daughter's boyfriend? Powerhouse acting from Michael Kenneth Williams though. I loved that Richard offered to pay for the picture that Angela sketched of him. What does Margaret really need that $100 for? Any theories on what Margaret is saving up for? Escape from Nucky. perhaps? Gillian is batsh*t crazy.

Up to Season 2 Ep 5. Michael Pitt was very moving as Jimmy got over the shock of having to read the names of his fallen comrades in arms. I guess attending the Memorial Day celebration was too hard for Richard, which is understandable. Why did Nucky ask Jimmy to read the names if he didn't think Jimmy was the appropriate choice? tt was disturbing watching him ridicule Jimmy later. Eli just can't catch a beak, can he? I would love to see Jimmy get from under his mother's thumb, or more specifically, from under her undergarments. It's so creepy whenever they show Richard's mask off his face. My jaw dropped when the dog took it. It's electric every time Steve Buscemi and Shea Wigham share the screen. That fight scene was incredible. "In the future, if you're going to point a gun at someone, make sure it's loaded." That barbequed squirrel looked disgusting. Nucky is in no position to request guarantees from the attorney general and he should know than. I am so glad Richard didn't kill himself. Covering for the Commodore is getting lin a lot of trouble and I'm not sure how much longer he can keep it up. I wish Jimmy could be happy. His mother really screwed him up. Jack Huston was heartbreaking in that last scene with Michael Pitt. Parkhurst better be dead before this episode ends. I thought Owen was after Margaret. That final long shot of Eli digging was stunning. Excellent episode.

Ep 6 of season two on deck. Van Alden is clearly regretting the day he ever got involved with Lucy. That priest was a little harsh with Teddy. "I can't fault you for boldness, but not every insult requires a response." Why does Gillian feel the need to flaunt her sick relationship with Jimmy in front of everyone. Nucky's father's feelings about Nucky seem to change with every appearance he makes in the story. Lucy making this pregnancy turnn her into a helpless moron is getting very tiresome. The makeup for that burn victim was astonishing work, worthy of an Emmy. I love the way Boardwalk looks at night. The way Van Alden keeps looking for absolution through half-truths to his wife is disgusting, what a vile man. I get the feeling that while she was having sex with Nucky, Margaret was thinking about Owen. It's looking like Nucky and Margaret will never completely trusty one another. Owen appears to be using Katie to get to Margaret. Jimmy and the Butcher (William Forsythe) have quite the working relationship already. Finally...Van Alden suffering the consequences of his actions...some of them anyway. Loved when Rose bit him on the wrist though. Does Nucky not understand the concept of confession?
Gideon58
10-01-23, 01:39 AM
Moving on to ep 7 of season two. Really like that actor playing Jack Dempsey. Van Alden is slime for what he's doing to Lucy. Capone and Luciano aren't going to put up with Jimmy much longer. Watching Van Alden losing his desk, and to a woman no less, was AWESOME! Was that Emma Kenney from Shameless and The Conners playing Margaret's sister? Gillian is sickening...she can't spend five minutes with Jimmy without trying to crawl inside him. Van Alden has a lot of nerve being mad at Nucky for giving Lucy money. Now that she's got money, didn't take Lucy long to find a babysitter. Nice to Van Alden finally holding his daughter. How is Esther supposed to "sort out" Van Alden's "domestic situation."? Well, I guess Owen Slater is no one to be toyed with either. Couldn't tell whether or not Jimmy knew what was going to happen to Nucky and if he wanted to prevent it. The chemistry between Owen and Margaret is burning a hole in the screen.

Let's take a look at Season Two ep 8. That nightmare was kind of an oddball opening to the episode. Loved the way Buscemi played learning of Nucky's father's death. So has Van Alden hired this women to raise his daughter for him? The Butcher made Gillian's day when he assumed that she was Jimmy's wife? The Butcher really struck a nerve with Jimmy. Can't believe Margaret actually expected Nucky to break down regarding his father. Margaret really needs to stop trying to change who Nucky is. Can't believe how harsh Angela was with Jimmy. I did like seeing Jimmy being honest with her for a change. "It's OK, Cookie, we're invisible here." Surprised and impressed that Nucky wants Margaret's children to call him dad. The Thompson brothers scene at the wake was predictable but still very well played by Buscemi and Wigham. Though I understand his motivation, can't see Nucky actually retiring. Why did Nucky feel the need to remove his sling before seeing Chalkie? Cannot believe that moron Neary is going to be the new treasurer. Does Eli have any kind of loyalty to anyone? So glad that Jimmy is onto Mickey Doyle.

Ep 9 of Season Two. Loved Nucky's explanation for his cast. Poor Emily, why are they doing this to this little girl? No matter what Nucky does for this McGarricle guy, he's not happy. Thought he were done with Dunn Purnsley. I had a feeling about Esther and her assistant. "And keep him away from small children and nursing mothers." This is Nucky's idea of "retiring"? "I'd be careful about where I order my cutlets." That shot of Emily's doll in the fire was very unsettling. Deputy Halloran is an idiot. "Let's not lie to each other Mr. McGarricle. Whenever men like you need to win, you turn to men like me." That opening shot of the cleaver in the butcher scene wasn't subtle at all. That scene in the kitchen was awesome, but will it really change anything? So glad McGarricle is out of the picture. what the hell was Margaret thinking? Why was Jimmy now thinking below his waist? I'm starting to not believe anything that comes out of Owen's mouth.

10-03-23, 01:33 AM
Season Two ep 10. Is Van Alden seriously shocked by the arrival of divorce papers? Of course, the doctors are being completely vague about Emily's condition and Margaret thanks it can be handled with money. It's funny that Jimmy is ambivalent about branching out into heroine. I hate Nucky's attorney...what a pompous ass. His firing should have happened like four episodes ago. Teddy was wrong for what he did but Margaret overreacted. What gives these guys the right to come after the picketers with baseball bats? "I hope the meter's not running, I hate to think I'm being paid to be told I'm a fool." Where was Eli when Holloran was getting the crap beaten out of him? OMG, Eli set up Halloran. At least Chalkie and Jimmy met even if nothing was accomplished. I totally missed t hat Teddy witnessed Nucky burning down the house. Not exactly sure why Jimmy can't sell this booze now. Why does Esther want to go off the record for something that can't be proven? This priest that Margaret is putting all her trust in is about as greasy as they come. Wy do I have a feeling that when Jimmy leaves town this time he's not coming back? The Butcher really crossed the line...the gloves are off now.
Gideon58
10-03-23, 05:11 PM
season Two, Ep 11. Finally someone came forward about the "baptism". If Van Alden's childhood story was supposed to evoke sympathy for him, that ship has sailed. Shouldn't that room have been blocked off as a crime scene? There's only one reason we are now getting backstory on Jimmy. Didn't know Eli was looking at the chair. I always suspected Tommy wasn't planned. That sicko Gillian was actually getting aroused watching Jimmy beat up his professor. Jimmy could never have a healthy relationship with a woman after what Gillian did to him. He and Angela didn't stand a chance. Everything Jimmy said in that enlistment scene was a lie. Van Alden just keeps digging a deeper grave for himself. Buscemi was chilling in that scene with Margaret. I wanted to cheer when Jimmy started strangling his mother, like when McMurphy strangled Nurse Ratched in Cuckoo's Nest. God, that Gillian....ice, ice, baby.

OK, it's the season two finale. Jimmy wasn't playing wit those Kalnsmen. I hope we weren't supposed to feel bad for them. That scene between Kelly MacDonald and Juliane Nicholson was excellent...still can't t ell what Margaret is going to do. When did Margaret and Nucky start sleeping separately? Did you see Gillian's eyes when the word "will" was mentioned? Wonder what the legalities are regarding Jimmy tearing up that will. Neary....it's about time. Can't believe everyone got off but Halloran. It seems like Nucky is a little too comfortable with this being all over. I liked that Richard offered to take care of The Butcher for Jimmy. Why did Jimmy go to this meeting unarmed? I saw this coming but I don't have to be happy about it. Jimmy was the heart of this show. Margaret got the last laugh though.

I'm not happy with the demise of my favorite character, Jimmy Darmody during the season two finale finale, but not totally surprised either because it is rumored that Michael Pitt has a reputation for being difficult to work with, but I am still willing to plunge into season three. Another favorite actor of mine, Bobby Cannavale, has joined the cast as Gyp Rosetti. The character was provided a very explosive introduction. Mickey Doyle is not the brightest bulb in the row. That suit Kelly MacDonald was wearing in her first scene was stunning. When did Gillian become a madam? "If it weren't for married men, we'd be out of business dear." They can't find anything better for Richard to do than be a whorehouse bouncer. Al Capone was deaf? Nucky's New Year's Eve party should be quite the event. "You run an open event bizaar. alcohol to the highest bidder." There are few actors who play greasy better than Christopher McDonald. Wow, the Thompsons have a whole hospital wing named after them? Loved that pathetic Van Alden trying to go door to door on New Year's Eve. It was lovely seeing Richard bond with Tommy. I hate that Tommy thinks of Gillian as his mother. That doctor was unnecessarily rude to Margaret...there are a lot more people to blame for what happened to that woman than Margaret. Like the guy playing Eddie Cantor. "Well, he left town and I chewed through it." "Must be all the sawdust between those caulifowers." Where did Nucky get all that jewelry? When did Mucky start working exclusively with Rothstein? Rosetti is definitely not interested in making friends and influencing people. why do we care about the Butcher's wife? An attempt to provide sympathy for the character? That ship sailed when he displayed his propensity with a meat cleaver. I don't get what this woman sees in Van Alden, except an opportunity to for instant motherhood. Didn't realize that hospital wing was possible because of that land Margaret gave away. Glad that Nucky could do nothing to prevent that. Two more bite the dust. Surprised Nucky is so upset about being the hospital...that would be such great optics for him. "The only place I can completely rest my head." Solid season opener with terrific direction from Tim Van Patten.

Season Three. ep 2 on deck: Love the tile of this episode, "Spaghetti and Coffee" can't wait to learn the significance of that. Didn't understand the bit with the goldfish. I thought Eli was exonerated from his charges. I was thinking the exact same thing when Eli asked Mickey how is it that he's still alive. I love the way Rosetti is so mysterious about his specific business outside some cases of rum. So Nucky and Margaret are separated again? Nucky has some cajones being upset that Billie might be cheating on him. Is Billie being kept by Rothstein? That has to be driving Nucky nuts. What an interesting diagnosis Chalkie got from his daughter's boyfriend, didn't see that coming. Margaret is a little too obsessed with this woman who had the miscarriage. Stephen Root has now joined the cast a crooked fed. Why is this doctor being such a prick to Margaret? Loved that scene with Chalkie and his daughter...started one way and did a complete 180. well, it took 34 minutes into the episode, but got the significance of the title. Why was Gyp pretending not to know what spaghetti was? Margaret got awfully cocky between season two and season three. Loved that scene with Eli and his son, Will, great work by Shea Wigham. You just know working for Mickey is killing Eli on the inside. I like Billie, she's not a brainless bimbo like Lucy, Samuel did not deserve that, I'm glad Dunn sent a message. Michael Kenneth Williams nailed his part in that scene. An impressively subdued finale.

Of all the actors that was in this series, the one I always am happy to see working is Jack Huston, who played Richard Harrow. Always felt he could be a big star someday.

Jack Huston is fantastic on this show.

Season 3 Ep 3. That was a weird dream Nucky had. Has Rothstein done something to Billie? Why is it so important to Margaret to see the Bishop? I have no love lost for Van Alden but those guys in his office were acting like 5th graders. I don't know how long Nucky can control Gyp. Is Gillian part of Luciano's heroine operation? God, I wanna smack that doctor in the mouth. Really enjoying Margaret's interest in the hospital if it's sincere. Gillian gets free booze because she's Jimmy's mother? n "I'm much too tough, sweetie...you'll crack a tooth." That runner Benny will be dead before the season is out, you heard it here. Is it wrong that I'm enjoying Van Alden's misery? Can't believe it was Mickey who shot the Butcher. Despite where they are right now, Nucky and Margaret still care about each other. There's some serious chemistry between Bobby Cannavale and Gretchen Mol. "So consider yourself initiated in the world of bullsh*t and blarney." And Van Alden's fall from grace continues. I wanted to cry when Richard exp[lained why he did what he did. I knew what was up when that cop told Gyp good luck, though they did sort of telegraph it. SO relieved that Billie isn't dead, I like her. Bobby Cannavale is crushing it as Gyp Rosetti

Season 3 Ep 4. Owen and Mickey both need to watch their step with Nucky. Sanitary napkins were non-existent before the 1920's? Who is Rowland Smith? "Go buy yourself a personality." "You stir...I'll provide the heat." Why was Rowland being such a smart-ass with Nucky? That scene in the cellar reminded me of the Von Trapps hiding from the Nazis in The Sound of Music. I still say Benny's big mouth will have him dead before the season is out. What has happened to the Sheriff's department since Eli left? That scene with Capone and his son was fantastic. Luciano is trying to keep his new heroin business close to the vest but I'm not sure how much longer he can do that. How long were Nucky and Owen trapped in that cellar with Rowland? Al Capone...taking care of business...damn. Loved that shot of the blood dripping through the wooden cellar steps. This episode would have been a great Emmy reel for Stephen Graham.

I'm now up to ep 5 of Season Three. Not surprised at all that Gyp is a sexual freak. I'm sensing a bit of a thaw between Nucky and Eli....I like it. "You are a convenience of geography and supply." Rothstein has no idea who Gyp Rosetti is or what he's capable of. He can't see anything past his nose. Why are the writers being so protective of Van Alden? Gillian thinks Jimmy is still alive? Seriously? "I can hardly write Come, discuss your vagina." I like that Nucky still considers Margaret and the kids his family. Loved seeing James Cromwell, who I last saw on Succession. Did Nucky buy Billie the part in this show? "I wish somebody had told me all of this when I was 13, I wouldn't have thought I was dying." The Billie/Nucky/Margaret confrontation was brilliantly directed. Loved Chalkie's red suit. That Nucky/Margaret scene was really well written. Van Alden's going to get another free pass? They've got Gilliam looking like a freaking idiot. Never thought I would be using this sentence, but that nun is a b*tch. Talk about collateral damage. Billie is a terrific upgrade from Lucy. I really like her. Nucky's playing with fire trying to take Gyp out.

Still in season three, now up to ep 6. I still think something is going to happen with Margaret and Owen. Why would someone burn down that greenhouse? Loved Margaret's reaction when teddy asked if Owen could live with them. Gillian really doesn't know anything about running a whorehouse. Why does Remus always talk about himself in the third person? It's pretentious and creepy.. All that fuss and court proceeding for a crime with a $5.00 fine. "Miss Randolph, I sympathize your desire to bring purpose to your life, but this courtroom is not the place to do it." There is a remarkable resemblance between Billy Magnussen and Michael Pitt. I think Nucky got to Esther. Would love to see something happen with Richard and that woman. Well, it took three seasons and six episodes to happen but finally.
Gideon58
10-08-23, 04:20 PM
Season Three, Ep 7. I like that the Thompson brothers are spending Easter with their families. Gillian clearly hasn't told Roger about Jimmy yet. It's nice seeing Richard taking care of Tommy. I love Eli's wife. Her speech at the dinner table was so sweet. "I better get back in there...with a chair and a whip." Holidays look like fun at the Rosetti house...imagine what Christmas is like? I liked Margaret pouring her heart out to Eli's wife. It seems like both of these women could use a friend. I knew Tommy sneaking into that room was going to lead to trouble. I loved that the woman agreed to leave the house with Richard. Steve Buscemi can juggle! There's something seriously wrong with Gyp Rosetti...did he actually punch a priest? Why the hell did Gillian do that to Roger?
Gideon58
10-08-23, 11:41 PM
Season Three Ep 8. Is Gillian seriously going to get away with this? Richard doesn't really think that's Jimmy, does he? Wow, this has to be tearing Van Alden up inside, but he deserves it. I think Nucky getting Emily a pony is sweet. I'm slow, but I just figured out why Gillian did what she did to Roger. So Gillian wasn't the only one who thought James was still alive. "You exist in this town because I allow you to. I feel terrible for Mrs. Shearer and I love the actress playing her. :I run naked through the pages of the United States Criminal Code." Owen seems to be cuing the return of sweet Margaret. LOVBED Billie's audition scene, she nailed it. That scene with Buscemi and James Cromwell was very well written. I h ad a feeling Van Alden wasn't going to put with selling irons much longer. Nucky was a little over the top with Gil, that wasn't necessary. I hope Nucky is figuring out that Billie isn't another Lucy. "I just want you to be my gangster." First season Van Alden was chasing bootleggers and now he is one. Is Nucky losing his hearing?
Gideon58
10-09-23, 01:50 PM
Season Three, Ep 9. Wow, Nucky has a brain injury, I thought he was just losing his hearing. Nucky is really messed up. Bobby Cannavale was chilling in that scene with the sheriff. Can't believe Nucky confused Chalkie with a shoeshine boy. Why is Teddy ansering Nucky's phone? Gyp seems to be taking control of the boardwalk without Nucky knowing it. Buscemi was brilliant in the birthday party scene. Loving this possible romance for Richard, long overdue. Don't believe what those whores did to Tommy. "I'll wear that f*cking dago's guts like a necktie." Richard is quite a demon on the dance floor. Can't tell if Nucky is unaware of what's wrong with him or if he's just in denial about it. HATE that they killed Billie. Do not believe Gillian chastising Richard about what happened with Tommy. The boy shouldn't be living in a whorehouse. Buscemi's work in this episode was Emmy-worthy, how this guy never won an Emmy for this show is a mystery to me. What was with Gyp and the pirate hat?

OK, we're up to ep 10 of Season Three and the two characters I predicted would be dead before the season was out are still alive. The swimmers finding the booze bottles as in the opening credits was hysterical. Four for twenty...Van Alden's learning how to be a real drug dealer. Katie doesn't really think Owen is going to marry her, does she? OK, did he just propose to Katie and then tell Margaret they're leaving town forever. I guess Nucky's brain isn't scrambled eggs anymore. Rothstein mihgt get more efficiency from his flying monkeys if he stopped talking above them. Means is making Harry Dougherty look like an idiot. I think that nun was behind Margaret's classes being cancelled. Richard is fantastic...if there's one guy I want to survive all of this, it's him. "I ain't gotta spell 'em just pay for 'em." That scene with Al Capone and Van Alden was great. A suicide? Seriously? Nucky only wants a new life with Margaret because Billie is gone. Gyp is certifiably insane, there's no other explanation for the way he acts. I guess there are consequences for toying with the affections of two different women. I knew Margaret was pregnant.

Can't believe I'm almost at the end of Season four already. Here' Ep 11. How did Nucky find out about Margaret and Owen so quickly? Gyp is not playing. "I want him in front of me...on his knees or on a slab." These guy don't give a damn about collateral damage. The ego on that Gillian, my God. That girl really needs to get over herself. Have to admit I love seeing Nucky need Chalkie. I feel terrible for Sammy, Chalkie has put him in a terrible position. when are Lucky Luciano and Meyer Lansky going to shoot each other in the face? "What if slip $25000 grand in your pocket now, you let me walk in there and drag Nucky Thompson out by his dick?" The Gyp/Chalkie encounter was excellent. OK, I'm over Gillian she has got to go. I bet Nucky never saw himself in this deep. Does Nucky really think he has enough juice to get Atlantic City back? Capone to the rescue.

Can't believe it...the Season Three finale. Very effective opening scene, making the mayor look like an idiot. That was great when the reporters laughed at the mayor. Gyps boss is not going to rest until Nucky's dead. Why is Tommy under lock and key with a guard at his door? Was Lucky protecting Meyer or somebody else? Bobby Cannavle was chilling in that scene with Gillian, She needs to give Gyp what he wants before he takes it. Is Margaret aborting that baby? OK, this Masseria guy is really mucking up the works. "And when I'm done, there won't be n othing left nut a wet spot and a hunk of hair." Did Gillian really think she was going to get that off? Go Richard, go Richard, go Richard....Would have liked to have known what was in that needle. Well, season four can have a fresh start now. Unfortunately, Margaret doesn't realize that's about all the sincerity she will ever get from Nucky. Well, the two characters I [redicted would be dead by the end of this season are stil alive. Still habve two more seasons and Bobby Cannavle's work in this episode was an Emmy reel.

And we're off! The Season Four opener! It's really time for a couple of characters to get what's coming to them. I see Richard is still taking care of business. Thoset ap dancers were outstanding. Glad to see Eddie back on his feet and being treated like crap by Nucky again. :What was brought to doorstep was returned." Masseria is a big dumb ape, I'm so over him. I have to wonder how Eli's wife feels about him bringing their son into his business. There seem to be a few too many new characters being introduced making things a little confusing. I loved the way Eli's family all stood up when Nucky had to leave. "I know...I went to college for a year...that's where I picked up all my bad habits." Enjoyed seeing Capone with his family. I knew Dickie wanted to watch. Dunn may have messed up his job with Chalkie. I see Ron Livingston has joined the show. I think I like Nucky's new girl, not as much as Billie though. I don't believe how stupid that girl was with Nuckie. The final scene made up for the rest of a rather confusing season opener.

Yeah, I really liked Owen. This show loves to kill off all the characters I really like.
Yeah, I really liked Owen. This show loves to kill off all the characters I really like.
Yeah, but then there are a couple that I would say overstay their welcome, and you can pretty much feel the writers are jumping through hoops to find reasons to keep them in the story. It happens at least with 2, maybe 3, key characters for me.

Season four, episode 2. I noticed Dennis Lehane, who wrote Mystic River is billed as a Consulting Producer on this episode, whatever that means. "Better not to vow than vow and jot pay. We got a really nice piece of backstory for Richard. Eddie is being kind of annoying, being in denial about not being 100% yet. I'm glad Samuel got through that ordeal with Nucky and Eddie OK, I was worried about him. Loved what Eddie said to the Mayor. I didn't remember that Van Alden's wife knows who he really is. Loved Chalkie's suit. OMG., Jeffrey Wright! I love Jeffrey Wright! Where were Eddie's shakes in the second scene with Nucky? All the killing Richard's done but he couldn't kill that dog. What was the point of what Capone did at that speech? "Only Kings understand each other." Dickie's widow's timing coming back at the end of that meeting was impeccable. So a young J Edgar Hoover has come into it now? Peter MacRobbie was excellent in that one scene. I knew there were going to be more consequences for Dunn. That woman got what was coming to her. Glad that Eddie is being taken more seriously, he's earned it.
Gillian, Mickey Doyle, and Messeria
I'll save my thoughts on Gillian's arc for later, but yeah, she's one of the most detestable characters.
Mickey Doyle was an interesting charactter. A bit of a comic relief, but I liked the performance and it gave the character a bit more flair than maybe other actor would've given it.
I didn't care about Masseria one way or the other.

Season Four, Ep 3. Loved Nucky's reply to the remark that someone was excited to meet him. "The new Negro must be taught in thought and culture." Jeffrey Wright is crushing it as Dr. Narcisse. Loved that Richard offered to pay those back taxes. Why does Nucky want to get involved with this Skeeter guy, he is so greasy. "Wet is why we're going." I'm surprised Dunn still has a job. "Don't let the door hit you in the brains." Pretty sire Mickey letting Eli's son take that booze is going to bite him in the ass later. I wondered how long it would take to watch Emily handle that firearm. OMG, Oscar winner Patricia Arquette! "I've already met the midget on the midway back home." So Ron Livingston's character doesn't know about Gillian's history. His scenes in this episode made me realize I don't give a damn about Eli's son. "Anyone who says money doesn't buy happiness, doesn't know where to shop." Jeffrey Wright was bone chilling in that scene with Dunn.

OK, ep4 of Season 4. well, the FBI is definitely in the picture now. "I'll find the weakest link in Thompson's neck and I'll break it. Thompson and Rothstein working together has disaster written all over it. Chalkie is long overdue for some recreation, but I think getting involved with Miss Maitland, will have him answering to Dr. Narcisse. A parting of the ways is definitely down the pike for Chalkie and Dunn. Was Dunn actually trying to strongarm Dr. Narcisse? Love how Al Capone refuses to let Van Alden go home. Love where the Thompson brothers are right now...they seem to have come to terms about a lot of stuff. How do you make your own milk of magnesia? I like that Eddie and Capone are getting to know each other. Van Alden is working very hard trying to keep his hands clean but is having a hard time with it. I loved Michael Shannon's take on the like "I do have a sense of humor." I think killing is an adrenaline rush for Al Capone, the fact that he was high didn't hurt either. I don't believe Meyer said that to Rothstein. It's nice to see something not go Rothstein's way for a change. "If the money doesn't show, this conversation never happened and will never happen again." Didn't see Meyer's display of power coming at all. First time we've seen that kind of behavior from him. Eddie would never betray Nucky.

10-19-23, 01:53 PM
And we're up to ep 5 of Season Four. Really don't like the way the FBI was playing around with Eddie without formally arresting him. Willie really needs to be truthful with Nucky if he wants him to help. Gillian is becoming a total junkie. The only thing scarier than Al Capone is Al Capone on drugs. Willie is going to destroy all the good will that has been rebuilt between Mucky and Eli. Gillian just doesn't have a clue. What he's doing is eating Van Alden up inside but he can't stop either. I don't care what Nucky says, Eli will find out about what Willie did at some point. Even Tommy is starting to see what kind of woman his grandmother is. "You can't just bleach me out like a laundry stain." "The rage you feel, listen to me carefully, it's a gift, use it but don't let anyone see it." Buscemi nailed that monologue to Willie. Can't believe Van Alden even contemplated shooting Al Capone, right in front of his brother. Frank Capone's death reminded me of Sonny Corleone's death in The Godfather. Gillian is playing Wilkins like a fiddle. I'm so disappointed in Eddie. I love how complex the relationship between Capone and Van Alden has become. Al is going to go stark raving mad now. Can't believe Eddie thought he had no other option.

Season4, ep six here. I was beginning to think the show forgot all about Margaret we haven't seen her in like five or six episodes. I like that Nucky still cares about Teddy and Emily, but he has to have known that Margaret has moved on. Paul and Richard's meeting of the minds...did not see that coming. It's a little bit of a coincidence that all of a sudden Eli can't stop thinking about Willie. Nucky needs to distance himself from the McCoy character, he's nothing but trouble. This FBI agent is going to try and go from the inside now? Eli and Mickey didn't flinch though. :Fifty bucks on the one with the leg in his mouth." Has Charlie Luciano got a past that's trying to catch up with him? That rendition of "St Louis Blues" was smoking. Not really feeling Buscemi with Patricia Arquette. I'm glad to see that Nucky is feeling something regarding Eddie. Chalkie better be careful, I mean we saw this coming, but Chalkie better be careful, Dr Narcisse isn't going to like this.

10-20-23, 09:19 PM
Well we're up to Season 4, Ep 7. Why was it necessary for Capone to do that in broad daylight in front of hundreds of people? Loved when J Edgar told Remus to stop referring to himself in the third person. OK, I see where Capone is now...he's high as a kite. "It's a wo\man's place to tend to the home,. it's a man's place to tend to the future." I have a feeling Maude is using Willie for something, but I'm not sure what. What is this place where Margaret is working? Watching Gillian try to detox was kind of fun. Rothstein was so creepy with Margaret. Jeffrey Wright crushed that scene in the church. Shea Wigham played that scene with Willie...love the way he kept telling Nucky to butt out. Loved J Edgar taking credit for other agents' work. I swear Gillian looked a little disappointed when Roy told her he had begun divorce proceedings. I liked learning that Means has possible jail time in his future "I'm going to chalk this up to whiskey and bad timing." I guess Willie just wants to be like his Uncle Nucky, which will kill his father. Dunn must be trying score some points with Chalkie and/or Dr. Narcisse. What's with the scars on Narcisse's chest

Season 4 ep 8. How did the FBI find out about Nucky and Willie so quickly? Willie is trying very hard not to come home to his family ever again. I can't tell if Chalkie knows what Dunn did. I liked that Nucky was upset to see Mickey with Eddie's cane. Surprised and glad that Nucky was honest with Eli about Willie. Loved when Patricia Arquette showed up and all the men were ogling her like they hadn't seen a woman before. Dunn is being awfully uppity to Chalkie, the last person he needs to be disrespecting right now. FBI Jim is not playing...that's a whole lot of Chesterfields. Can't wait for Chalkie to find out what Dunn did. Mickey needs to learn how to read a room if he wants to live. Loved the lukewarm reception to Dr Narcisse's play. The meet cute between Sally and Willie was adorable. Love that Sally is not falling instantly under Nucky's spell. For a show where so much money is shown exchanging hands, you would think the props people would make more of an effort in making the money look real. Does Eli really think defying the FBI is a good idea. Dunn's trying to force out Dr Narcisse? Very dangerous. That fight scene between Chalkie and Dunn was superbly staged and photographed.

10-23-23, 06:16 PM
We're up to ep 9 of Season 4 now. I guess domesticity was not meant for Van Alden. Gillian is never going to be able to give herself completely to a man because she's still obsessed with Jimmy. That's why she couldn't be honest with Roy about Jimmy. Eli didn't seem to want to talk about Willie with Nucky. So this judge would actually allow Tommy to continue living in a whorehouse? These writers continue to protect Van Alden and I don't understand why. It's nice to see Rothstein sweat a little and it looks like a piece of my death wish list is about to come true. Of course Richard is saying yes, he would walk through fire for Tommy. What does Dr Narcisse have on that woman? I knew Chalkie was putting this girl at risk when he got involved with her. Chalkie should have taken out dr Narcisse right then and there. That was surreal when Van Alden was actually honest with O'Banyon. Why would Richard ask Nucky for a job? Wow he told his wife the truth too. Who is this Roy guy really? How long did Chalkie think he could hide that girl from his family? Sally's really got Nucky confused.

Season 4, Ep 10. I was surprised to see Eli being so cooperative with the FBI. Or is he doing it just to keep Willie out of jail? "I prefer to live near the swamp not in it." Can you imagine coming downstairs in the morning and finding the FBI sitting at your breakfast table? Did I miss how the FBI found out about Willie? The way Rothstein is sniffing around Margaret is really creepy. Nice to know that Chalkie has Richard's back. Dominic Lombordazzi is a welcome addition to the cast. Been a fan of his since Oz. Narcisse's growling when he missed Chalkie reminded me of Clint Eastwood's growling in Gran Torino. Meyer Lansky seems to live in pure self--preservation mode and would sell out anybody to save his own ass. Can't believe Narcisse thought Nucky would give up Chalkie. Nucky should have killed Lansky. Love the way Narcisse makes himself sound like he's being forced to sell heroin. Not happy seeing Nucky in bed with Narcisse and Masseria. That attempted hit on Al Capone was no joke. I knew Chalkie had been double-crossed. "Three thousand negros with ideas in their heads. That's threat worth worrying about." Dr Narcisse is going to kidnap Chalkie's daughter. The Thompson dynasty seems to have officially expanded.

One ep away from the season four finale. I wonder if Chalkie's family is aware that he is on the run for his life. I hope we're finally done with Means. Whoa , Oscar winner Louis Gossett as Chalkie's savior, Oscar "Explain that to a man who never forgets." Loved Richard protecting Tommy from Gillian. Gretchen Mol is working very hard to imbue some sympathy into Gillian but that ship has sailed. "Set it up now, Nuck, while there's still a hand to play." Any scenes Eli has with his kids are golden. That is Brian Tyree Henry playing Oscar's nephew Roy shot an unarmed man? The first real regret I've seen from Chalkie regarding his relationship with Nucky. I really like Eli's wife...very sensible, seems to have her head on straight. and priorities in place. And not the airhead her husband thinks she is. Gillian just might be the most selfish creature on the planet. That reveal regarding Roy was AWESOME!!!! Gillian finally went out in a blaze of glory with Emmy-worthy work from Gretchen Mol. I don't believe Daughter left Chalkie. Not exactly sure what Nucky's last line meant.

Yep, we're here...the Season Four Finale, can't believe I'm here already. Michael Kenneth Williams nailed that opening scene with Nucky. Nucky is lucky Chalkie didn't shoot him the second he walked in the room. Love the way J Edgar seems to be taking credit for the work of his agents. Well I guess it's time for Gillian to leave behind her denial regarding Jimmy's death. Gillian needs to be committed, not go to jail. My heart is really going out to Eli right now...this betrayal of his brother is eating him up inside. Loved that scene between Richard and Nucky. They're just now finding Jimmy's body. Nucky did not refer to Chalkie as a "spook"? "This is only may career, Harold...I'll relax when it's over." Richard actually in love is awesome. They didn't need to have Willie interrupt Nucky, he wouldn't have shot his brother. Why is this so personal for Knox and not for the rest of the FBI? That scene with Capone and his Uncle was so Vito and Michael Corleone. That fight scene with Knox and Eli was AMAZING! The dance between J Edgar and Dr Narcisse is stupid. Loved the way Narcisse choked on the word "sir," Oh no, not Richard, anyone but Richard. Outstanding season finale superbly directed by Tim Van Patten.
As much as I loved the character of Richard Harrow, he is one of those I said that I feel overstayed their welcome. I always liked him, but you kinda felt the writers were jumping some hoops to keep him within the story. I think a season 3 exit would've felt more organic.
On the other hand, I kinda felt the same way about Gillian cause I felt her story here was a bit peripheral, but the payoff to it was really, really good; and in a way, it also solidifies Richard's presence during the season.
Eli is probably my favorite character on the show, so yeah, this season was an absolute edge-of-seat thrill ride.

And now, let's kick off the fifth and final season! we're opening the final season with a flashback? Seriously? That suit Buscemi had on in his first scene was gorgeous. Not sure how Chalkie ended up in a chain gang. Nucky is planning to enter politics? Really? I guess Margaret's boss didn't do too well dealing with the depression. It seems a little late in the game to getting flashbacks to Nucky and Eli's childhood. That scene with Margaret and the boss was really weird. Nothing like a group of black prisoners who are sick and tired of being sick and tired. OK< I guess I misunderstood about Nucky entering politics. I would have been pleased Messeria's exit long before this. Unless that was Van Gough in that scene, I can't believe that guy cut off that guy's ear. Looks like Lucky getting rid of Messeria was the best thing he could have done for himself. Didn't really understand why we needed the flashback until the end of the show, but still think it wasn't necessary as part of the final season. Overall, a rather lackluster season opener coming off the spectacular seaon four finale.

Season five, ep 2. Glad to know that Eli is OK, but idn't really understand that dream he was having. I'm over the flashbacks to Nucky's childhood...this is the last season, it's time to move on, we should have gotten this stuff in season three. "Law's a shield sir, not a sword." I was aactually happy that Willie admitted to Nucky being his uncle. Why would Al be talking business in front of a reporter? That scene in the women's prison bathroom just seemed to be an excuse for gratuitous female nudity. Gillian and that matron reminded me of Eleanor Parker and Hope Emerson in Caged. Loving that a breakfast cereal company wants to get into bootlegging. I hope this company isn't setting Nucky up. Van Alden won't be in the running for any Father of the Year Awards. Couldn't tell if Luciano was telling the truth about the split between him and Meyer Lansky. Nice to see Paul Calderon join the cast, an actor I've always liked. As suspected, Luciano was lying to Nucky about Lansky. That hothead Benny has got to go. I don't know why Willie lied to Nucky about his name coming up during the interview. I really like the relationship developing between Nucky and his nephew. Wow, Elliott Ness has come into the story. That was weird seeing Billie referenced after all this time. What was that room where Gillian and the warden were? I didn't realize Gillian was in a mental hospital, I thought she was in jail. Once again another character eliminated that I really liked.

Season Five, Ep 3. m I hate seeing what Chalkie has been reduced to. Why does Mickey have so much trouble remembering who he's working for? What a moron. I was intrigued by the use of the word "tabloids" in the screenplay. Was that term used in the 1920's? I knew Rothstein was going to get Margaret in trouble. Chalkie needs to get away from this guy he's a psycho. Benny needs to watch his mouth with Dr. Narcisse. Mickey may have finally sealed his fate. OK, I think I'm finally seeing the purpose of these flashback scenes but I still think they could have been worked into the show before the final season. Why did Benny and Lucky shoot out that whorehouse? Knew Margaret and Nucky had unfinished business

Season Five, Ep 4. This episode was directed by Gwyneth Paltrow's little brother, Jake. That scene with Capone and Ralph reminded me of the "Am I some kind of clown to you?" scene in Goodfellas. That kid playing Young Nucky is really good, though I still think these flashback scenes are a case of too little too late. The Commodore told Young Nucky to leave, why didn't he just leave? Well maybe Van Alden will finally get what's coming to him. How unsettling was it seeing Margaret drunk? She's come a long way since season one. Michael Shannon played that scene with Capone. But I still have to wonder why this character is being protected so carefully. Are Young Nucky and Eli being held against their will without them realizing it? I'm liking this thaw between Nucky and Margaret. Capone really seems to be losing it....I'm wondering if the cocaine has something to do with it? What was Sally thinking? What kind of game is the commodore playing with young Nucky?

Season Five, Ep 5. Loved that young Buscemi look-alike in the opening scene. And was that Joyce Van Patten playing the old Lady? It's terrible that Chalkie just lost his entire family. Maybe it's just me, but a ninth child is the last thing that Eli needs right now, though I do like the fact that he's happy about becoming a father again. Was it revealed before this episode that Nucky was once a cop? Did I miss it? The tension between the Muellers and the Thompsons could be cut with a knife. I liked that they actually wrote Michael Kenneth Williams' scar into Chalkie's story. Eli has a past with Van Alden's wife? Why are we supposed to care about what's going on with Gillian in the loony bin? Love that she wants to get out but won't admit to being cured. I didn't realize Capone had a mole in his organization that he doesn't know about. Chalkie's reunion in the final scene? Really?

Season 5, Ep 6. Did Narcisse get that whorehouse for her? Chalkie has to be the father of that baby and Narcisse has to know about it. Are they ever going to get rid of Mickey Doyle? That guy playing Young Nucky is NAILING Steve Buscemi's speech patterns. I think I've figured out why we're getting the Young Nucky flashback story...pretty sure we're going to learn about how his wife died, which Nucky refused to discuss with Eli back in season 1 or two. "This is where hope comes to get f*cked in the ass." "It was occupied....it was as occupied as a room could get." Really don't get the point of Nucky getting drunk with these hookers, pretending to be someone else. Did Van Alden really think he was going to get away with that? Stephen Graham was electrifying in that scene. Not sure I understand how Eli was able to walk away from that. It was disgusting watching Ms. Maitland getting on her knees to Narcisse. I never knew "Dream a Little Dream" was written in the 30's...the first time I ever heard that song was when Cass Elliott sang it back in the 60's. If anything happens to that little girl, I'm not watching the rest of this . The actor playing Y9ung Eli bears a remarkable resemblance to Shea Wigham too. How did I know that was young Gillian? Jeffrey Wright could have melted ice with that last look he gave Chalkie. Well at least we got rid of one character I hated.

This is one of the few shows I know in which the side characters outshine the main character. Buscemi is a good actor, marvelous in some, but he does not have the qualities to be a lead in a show imo, especially when the movie is about a powerful person.
Canavale and especially Shannon were great. It is due to this show that I've become a fan of Shannon's work.
I read someone once describe season 5 as more of a coda/epilogue than a proper season, and I think that's fitting.

Season Five, Ep7, one more to go. Nucky was claiming a few episodes ago that he wanted to get out of all of this, but you sure can't tell. Willie should be grateful he has a job at all. I don't know why they think we care about Young Gillian at this point. That Benny is such a big mouth he deserves whatever happens to him. Is it safe for Eli to be meeting Willie out in the open like that? Does Willie know what Eli did for him? Willie doesn't have a clue who he's dealing with or he wouldn't be talking to them like that. Finally, a character I wanted to see dead is finally dead. Now that Nucky has given up everything to save him, Willie wants to help him now? I'm glad that this show is almost over, because I really didn't care about anything that happened during this episode. I'm ready for this show to end.

Didn't think I would ever get here, but I am now watching the series finale. That opening scene took me to James Mason's suicidal swim in 1954's A Star is Born...actually gave me chills. OK, I can't believed I just noticed this, or am I just imagining it. Is Dabney Coleman's voice being used for the voice of the Commodore in the young Nucky scenes? Why not just use Dabney Coleman? Does Al Capone actually listen to anybody? Looks like Nargaret has learned a thing or do from being Mrs. Enoch Thompson. If that was all that happened with Mabel, I found it a little anticlimactic. That stock market scene reminded me of the finale of Trading Places. Stephen Graham was just heartbreaking in that scene with his son and I'm glad to see that Al is not in as much denial as I thought. Another abused woman making excuses for a man who beats her. Love that Capone has decided to go out with a smile on his face. Wasn't expecting another Nucky/Gillian encounter. Loved Narcisse's exit from the story. I am so over her and don't care what happens to her. I don't why he would even leave her money. Gillian appears to have had some sort of shock treatment. Can't believe that kid tore up that money. OK, now I understand...very pwoerful finale. A dangling plot point left unresolved, but a very effective series finale.
