Here we go again!
It's time for all you film fanatics to delve into your own brains and sort through the greatest of the great films you have in there and pick something spectacularific to go head to head with other nominations in this - MOFOs 29TH HALL OF FAME.
What's a Hall of Fame you ask? What are the rules? What conditions? What's going on here? It's all contained in the time-honored, mystical rules. Nobody knows who wrote them, or how long ago they were written. Okay, not true, I think Citizen Rules did it :
Movie Nominations: Any movie that you feel is worthy of an HoF, that's under 240 minutes, can be nominated...Previous HoF winners are excluded. Movies that were HoF nominated in the past but did not win are still eligible.
PM me your nominations and include: film title & year of release. Keep your nomination a secret until the unveiling of the films at the reveal.
Open Door Policy: For one week after the reveal of the movie nominations, new members can still join. This is also the time period in which to withdraw from the HoF if you've changed your mind. I suggest people review the movies that are nominated and make sure they can watch them, if not you can withdraw during the Open Door week.
Length of HoF: There will be 5 days of viewing time per movie. So if there are 12 movie nominations the HoF will be about 2 months long. The deadline to finish will be posted after the HoF starts.
During the HoF: Everyone watches the nominated movies and will discuss them in this thread. You need to write at least a few sentences about your thoughts on each movie after you watch it. Part of the process is a shared discussion of the movies, as a group.
Note: If you've seen a movie recently or have seen it many times you can skip watching it, otherwise you have to watch all nominated movies. But you will still need to post a review about it.
Requesting help to locate movies: If you have trouble locating a movie make a post and ask for help in the HoF. When responding with a movie link send it by private message, don't post links or embed films in this thread.
Dropouts: Members who don't finish will be disqualified and their movie nomination removed from the HoF. Please make sure you have the time to complete this. It helps to start watching the movies right away so that you don't have a bunch of movies to watch at the end. If for any reason you do need to drop out make sure and let me know that you can't finish.
***Withdrawing during the Open Door week is not considered Dropping Out.
Participation: An HoF is about participation, you can go at your own pace with one caveat: If a member is inactive with no movies reviewed for long periods of time, I will contact them to see what's up. Depending on the situation I might place their movie in 'undetermined status' meaning the movie is not out of the HoF but is not required to watch at that time. Basically we don't want a situation where someone joins but never participates as that's not fair to the other members and we can't tell if that person has dropped out or not. As long as someone finishes by the deadline then all will be good.
Ballots: When you're done watching the nominations PM me your ballot. Once you've sent in a ballot it's not changeable so make sure you're happy with your rankings before sending it in. Keep your ballot private until after the reveal of the final voting results, then it's customary to post your ballot (voting list) once the HoF is all done.
SO SEND ME THOSE NOMINATIONS!!

oh wow already?? yeah guess i'm in <3
A few hours after the 27th ended I saw people asking "Hey where is the 28th already?" so I though "dammit, I'm going to deliver this baby pronto" - but it's all the same, because there is so much time to ponder a choice and send a nomination. I won't be looking at my watch, then at all of MOFO saying, "Well?? The clock is running!"
I guess it's about that time of the year that I join one of these again. I'm in.

It's a special perk for the person running a Hall of Fame to know what has been nominated long before everyone else does - and I have to say I'm pretty giddy with anticipation knowing the selection we have thus far. I'm looking forward to this more than any other Hall I've been a part of.

When is the reveal?
The 1st of July has a nice roundness to it, but I think by the 28th June I'll be bursting to do the reveal, so it should be then. My 28th morning should be the night of the 27th for most all of you I think.

The short length of the nominations so far is tempting. I like an epic as much as the next guy, but my ideal time for watching movies that I choose myself is on the weekends at the crack of dawn before my son wakes up.

Wow, I haven't even heard of most of these, so don't have much to say as I haven't read about the noms at this points. So my thoughts...
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)...Both versions of this film are freakin amazing but for different reasons. This 1st version was written and shot partially as a sci-fi thriller with dark comedy undertones, but the studio heads wouldn't go with dark comedy in a thriller so most of Carolyn Jones scenes were cut. BUT...if you watch this with the idea that it was also meant to have some darker comic moments you might enjoy it more.
Das Boot (1981) My nom and for crying out loud please don't watch the hacked up theatrical version which runs 149 minutes. The Directors' Cut is the way to go and is 208 minutes...I guarantee those minutes fly by!
Goldfinger (1964) I haven't seen this in ages so now I suppose I'll end up rewatching all of the Sean Connery's Bond films, which is fine by me! I like Connery and even Roger Moore's Bond, but after that I don't care about the other Bond films.
Not even heard of these, are they more obscure titles or am I just living under a rock!
Vengeance is Mine (1979)
Adams æbler (2005)
Stroszek (1977)
A Moment of Innocence (1996)
Tomboy (2011)
Robot (Enthiran) - (2010)
Anomalisa (2015)
The Promise (La promesse) - (1996)

Goldfinger
I recently decided to start up the entire Bond franchise from the beginning, and cranked through the first 3 ( Dr No, From Russia with Love, and of course Goldfinger).
While I think Dr No is so far the best, Goldfinger is easily the second best of the 3, so far.
Goldfinger is where the franchise discovered it identity and never looked back. This was the film that introduced the gadgets, more quips, a opening scene with no connection to the plot itself, outlandish villains (Oddjob in particular and his, um, dangerous hat) and a Bond Girl with a ridiculous name.
The film has Bond on a mission to stops megalomaniacal mastermind, Auric Goldfinger, who loves gold. To go into details would spoil too much, but his plan actually makes sense. Hint: it involves gold.
Somehow it all works. At the center of all of this is Sean Connery, a steady presence who manages to prevent the film from becoming too silly with his portrayal. Bond doesn’t take himself too seriously but doesn’t shirk from his responsibilities. He knows what’s at stake, but also has a personal grudge against Goldfinger. As Bond, there was no one better than Connery. Although Daniel Craig comes the closest. Connery is able to convey just enough ability to prevent the film from becoming too silly. As Bond, Connery has that cool demeanor that only gets rattled at 2 points in the film. One is after discovering an acquaintance death, and the other is the infamous laser scene.
Ah, the laser scene. Here, I thought, is the famous scene I’ve seen parodied so many times. How would he escape here? I was surprised to see him at a near panic, desperately trying to figure out a way to escape his bonds. It is one of the few times I’ve seen Bond not in complete control of a situation, one where he had to scramble to think of a way out of certain doom. The means of his escape was not what I expected, and was a highlight of the film itself.
Highly influential, it is the bond film often remembered as the best in the franchise. The opening scene made me exclaim “Aha! That’s where True Lies got it from!” Parodied from the Simpson and the spy spoof Austin Powers in Goldmember, to inspiring countless spy films that lead to a boom from the US and Europe (the euro spy was born!), Goldfinger remains the standard.
Highly entertaining, and incredibly well directed. Good pick.

Vengeance Is Mine - Actually the first film from the Criterion Collection I ever saw. I remember liking it a good deal but wasn't really ready for it lol. If my memory serves me it may be a bit bleak for my tastes now.
Alambs Aebler - Have never heard of this, no idea what to expect
Stroszek - Been meaning to see this for awhile. I keep putting off Herzog.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers - I remember liking this a good deal
A Moment of Innocence - No idea but the poster looks nice <3
Das Boot - Not something I'd go out of my way to watch but I've only heard fantastic things about it
Tomboy - I recall seeing this on store shelves and know nothing else
Goldfinger - My least favourite Bond film other than GoldenEye
Anomalisa - I liked this at the time but never had the urge to revisit it
The Promise - looks promising
The Year My Voice Broke - Title and poster have me interested

Sorry my Bond is Craig. I love him as Bond.
Craig is a very different Bond, one with a haunting quality who is unable to escape the demons of his past. It’s much more nuanced as a performance, but the portrayals are also a insight to the times as well. Both are quite good.

Really glad I joined this because there's plenty I haven't seen, and out of what I have seen, there's nothing I don't like or dread watching again.
I do not see a clear cut winner or loser, nothing I can confidently predict for the top 3 or bottom 3.
Vengeance is Mine CR picked this for me in a personal Rec, and Hey Fredrick also tried picking it for me. Hopefully some of you like it.
Adams Apples Watched this about a year ago or less by virtue of MG recommending it to me-loved it! We may not see Takoma join as she refused to watch it when I picked it for her in the comedy rec. Have no fear as I believe her decision to err on the side of caution was unfounded. I can't see anyone complaining about it
Stroszek Seen it once back for the 70's countdown and loved it.
Das Boot Seen it 2 or 3 times but it's been a while. Watched a version that was like 5 hours so the director's cut will be nothing.
Goldfinger Probably haven't seen it since I was a kid so I'm due.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers Seen it a couple of times but I largely forget it. I think it's because the remake sticks in my mind since I saw it at the cinema as a kid.
Out of the other 6, I've only heard of Anomalisa.

There’s also plans to make a 5th version, currently.

Just a note from your friendly neighbourhood host about :
That Darn Cat! - Adams æbler and MovieGal's Nomination
I'm a cat lover, and I once downrated one of Roman Polanski's short films to 1/10 for needlessly including scenes where a cat is tortured. Also, I find a scene from Bad Boy Bubby that incudes harm to a cat unendurable. So I don't wave cat abuse in film away willy nilly. When I heard that there was a cat murder in Adams æbler I was a little concerned about this thread descending into chaos, so I watched the scene and it's absurdist comedy. I don't know how many of you have seen The Grand Budapest Hotel, but a cat bites the bullet in that film and it's just so silly that it's no bother. It's Pythonesque.
I've deemed the scene as not really being genuinely offensive for that reason. I thought the scene was absolutely hilarious actually, which aided me in my decision to give it the okay. The cat in the scene doesn't suffer - it would be silly to get upset over something that's akin to the dog scenes in A Fish Called Wanda. So I declare an A Fish Called Wanda Precedent.

I've seen Adam's Apples, but it's been so long ago, I don't remember the cat. I also don't care about simulated animal pain. I am sure if there was animal torture in it, since it's European (err... but not "Italian") and made after the year 2000, I'm pretty sure I would have assumed it was simulated. Thus I have taken a post to say, I have nothing to contribute for people who have issues seeing simulated animal pain and are trying to decide if this will be okay for them.

Speaking of the movies you lot have chosen, I've seen:
Adams æbler (2005)
Stroszek (1977)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
Anomalisa (2015)
and presumably Goldfinger (1964) (honestly, except for the fact in one of them blonde Christopher Walken and Grace Jones show up, they all blur together in my mind.)
Haven't seen, but own a digital copy of, Vengeance is Mine (1979).
And Das Boot and Tomboy are both rather well known in terms of hearing the title and knowing they exist. (The latter more-so because of Portrait of a Lady on Fire becoming so big).
The rest I don't think I've heard mentioned before.
Interesting bunch you lot chose. For the four different body snatcher movies, I grew up on the original, caught up with the remake about 10 years ago and was blown away. So the last minute of the Abel Ferrera one in high school, when I didn't know who Abel Ferrera was, and didn't pay it much mind, because remakes really didn't have a good reputation in general then. I did pick it up some odd years ago after actually seeing some Abel Ferrera movies (and hearing his version is good, but general consensus seems to think the first two are the best), but have been holding off on watching it so I can blind-watch it with friends (checks watch, in a little more than two years from now).
I've heard the fourth one with Kidman is terrible and have no interest in it.
I've yet to warm up fully to Stroszek, but I like it more than The Enigma of Kasper Hauser (aka, Every Man for Himself and God Against All).
Adam's Apples is fun and fine dark comedy. It didn't stick out in my mind compared all the other dark comedies I've seen in my life, but it's like noir, sure I'll watch a dark comedy. Though I don't think this one was that dark.

So now, on to my thoughts about the nominations :
The Year My Voice Broke - I've been on the lookout for something that's a really good movie that people haven't seen that's Australian, for every 3 or 4 Hall of Fames that's where I want to go. My cycle is thus Australian/Anything Goes (Probably a big film that's never been nominated before that deserves to be on the wall)/The best movie of any nationality I can find that I think people haven't seen/personal favourite. I think this movie is great, but I won't be offended if it's criticized harshly by anyone.
Das Boot - I love Das Boot - Somewhere I have the German mini-series version which runs 293 minutes and that's the only version I've never seen, so it might be time to give that one a viewing (over several nights, like a participant in this thread has already alluded to - because that would simply be akin to how it's meant to be watched.)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers - When Siddon PMed me his nomination I'd just bought this on DVD 2 days previously. I love those Hall of Fame coincidences (there's been a couple so far). Admittedly though, I do buy several thousand DVDs a year. I've never seen this 1956 version, so I'm very glad it was nominated - excited to see it.
Adams æbler - As I've mentioned a few times already, I already love this film after seeing just one scene. I can't wait to watch Adams æbler as it's my sense of humour down to a tee. I think I'm going to have trouble voting in this Hall, because I sense there are a few films I'm going to love.
Robot - It wouldn't be a Hall of Fame without a very left-field nomination from ueno_station54. They challenge me in a good way, and have got me interested in filmmakers I ordinarily wouldn't have come across yet. I have absolutely no idea how this is going to go down with me.
Stroszek - I was excited to see this nominated and I'm looking forward to seeing it. It was already on my watchlist.
Vengeance is Mine - If Criterion have released a film, chances are I'll love it. Another one that looks great.
A Moment of Innocence - Ever since watching Kiarostami's Close-up I've been wanting to see a film by Makhmalbaf. Now's the time. A revered film which just adds so much to this Hall of Fame.
Tomboy - Never heard of it, but I trust Allaby's sense of what makes a great film so I'm happy.
Goldfinger - Huzzah! I love the James Bond films, and it's about time I watched a Sean Connery one, for I haven't in a while. I'll probably review all of them eventually in a thread of my own. My first one will be right here. Goldfinger was one of the best, if not the best.
Anomalisa - If it's scripted by Charlie Kaufman then I'm on board.
The Promise - A very highly rated film. I'm gonna love this Hall of Fame.

Where do you physically store them?
The ones I deem important are shelved, and I have many shelves. A rough estimate on shelved is 7000. There's an intricate system - and obviously a place of honor for the Criterion collection. There are many others stacked, and I do have a separate room for storage which contains many more than those shelved.

I really should catalogue them, because I've completely lost track of what I have and don't have. It's the size of that job that keeps putting me off starting.
I wish I could afford to buy several thousand DVDs a year.
Like gbgoodies says, since the dawn of the streaming age, DVDs have become so cheap. Most of those I pick up are $1 - and there's one place I go to where I've picked up some wonderful editions of films for that price. I've even managed to grab Criterions for a couple of bucks. Every week brings in another 30, 40 or 50 DVDs.

That's my problem too, and my system for putting them on a shelf is usually based on when I bought them, and where I can find a place for them. I'm sure I have a bunch of movies that I've bought twice, but no system to catalog them.
I've been buying a lot of boxes of DVDs at garage sales recently, so my most recent system has been to leave them in the boxes and take pictures of them so I can find them when I want to watch a specific movie or TV show.
need links for Adams æbler (2005) and A Moment of Innocence (1996)
Vengeance is Mine (1979) - I watched this 10 years ago...I'm not a huge fan of Shohei Imamura, I actually just watched Eijainaka on TCM. I'll try and spend more time with this one...but most of his films have the same flaws.
Adams æbler (2005) - Never saw it or heard of it...
Stroszek (1977) - Dissapointed the first time I watched it but mostly because of the hype won't mind giving it a second shot.
A Moment of Innocence (1996) - never heard of it...
Das Boot (1981) - Director's Cut - This was recommended to me in another Hall and it finished 10th so I'm going to pick a different cut.
Tomboy (2011) - didn't see it...haven't dived into this filmmakers work before by optimistic
Goldfinger (1964) - good nom...solid Bond pick I think it's in my top ten for the series but I still enjoyed it.
Robot(2010) - This looks like it's going to be a slough
Anomalisa (2015) - this is a classic and the likely winner
La Promise (1996) - Another film I'm going to have to sit down and really watch again...first time left no impression on me.
The Year My Voice Broke - never heard of it or the filmmaker
Seen 4 before, including my own nomination.
Vengeance is Mine - Almost watched this a couple of times before, and I've had an eye out on this director for quite a while too but I've yet to actually dip my toe into his catalogue. I'm very happy it's nominated though so I can finally get to that. Other films of his that I'm curious about are Black Rain and The Ballad of Narayama.
Adams æbler - I've previously seen Flickering Lights, which is from the same director, and I could not stand it, so much so that I stopped watching halfway through. Mind you, I rarely quit a movie once I actually start it, and if I do it must've been genuinely painful to sit through, and not in a good way. I also know about his most recent film, Riders of Justice, and I actually had an opportunity to see it, saw the name of the director and immediately decided not to. Adams æbler should be this director's second chance, and who knows, if I like it enough I might just not be so closed off to his filmography anymore. He better not screw this up.
Stroszek - Another one I've almost seen before, except this time it's from a director I'm familiar with and quite like. Happy to finally scratch it off my watchlist.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers - A classic I've yet to check out.
A Moment of Innocence - Seen this before, liked it, don't mind watching it again. In fact, I'm kinda curious if I'll like it more, I just need to find a better copy this time.
Das Boot - Another classic I've yet to check out (this is considered a classic...right?). I still need to figure out if it's better to watch the director's cut or the miniseries version. I know enough to not check out the theatrical cut, but it seems there's a split in opinions when it comes to which of the other two versions is better.
Tomboy - The only movie out of this HoF that I'm kinda not excited about, only because I've already seen it before, didn't think much of it, and don't think my opinion is gonna change after another viewing. It kinda suffers from first feature issues, and that's even more apparent when you set it side by side with Portrait of a Lady on Fire, the comparison in quality is literally night and day.
Goldfinger - Never seen a Bond movie from this era, so this could be fun. Actually kinda excited to finally check out how Connery plays this.
Enthiran - The only movie thus far I've never heard of. I actually grew up passively watching Bollywood films as my older sister always had them on our TV, this doesn't look like a musical though...anyways, I expect this to be either a fun watch or an absolute cringe-fest. Maybe and hopefully both.
Anomalisa - One of my favourite movies of all time. An easy 10/10 for me, and I would be totally shocked if it's not at the top of my list by the end of this. Always happy and ready to watch and talk about this again.
La Promesse - Clearly, I'm a fan of the Dardennes, I think their filmography is pretty strong overall despite their more recent hiccups. Their older age must be starting to affect them or something, or maybe it was just me overrating them as directors thinking that they can properly tackle such a subject of Islamic radicalism (Young Ahmed), they were way over their heads with that one and it just ending up coming off as ignorant and slightly offensive. Anyways lol, their older films remain unaffected, some of my favourites are Two Days, One Night and Rosetta. I honestly only nominated this film of theirs specifically only because I was already planning on re-watching it in the days to come, but I still think it's a pretty good pick anyways so it works out.
The Year My Voice Broke - Never heard of this.
Not even heard of these, are they more obscure titles or am I just living under a rock!
Vengeance is Mine (1979)
Adams æbler (2005)
Stroszek (1977)
A Moment of Innocence (1996)
Tomboy (2011)
Robot (Enthiran) - (2010)
Anomalisa (2015)
The Promise (La promesse) - (1996)
The Year My Voice Broke (1987)
Since you only gave us two options, then you must be living under a rock haha, because these are definitely not obscure titles (maybe The Year My Voice Broke, but that's about it). It's okay though, nothing to be ashamed of, there's just too many movies in this world, which is a great thing the more the better.
By the way, I'll take links if people have them. Or let me know if they are on prime, Netflix, or criterion.
I'm pretty sure La Promesse is on criterion.

The ones I deem important are shelved, and I have many shelves. A rough estimate on shelved is 7000. There's an intricate system - and obviously a place of honor for the Criterion collection. There are many others stacked, and I do have a separate room for storage which contains many more than those shelved.
Yeah, I guess I don't have an extra spare room, let alone one I could dedicate solely to storing physical media. Though I'm wondering, even with that, just how much space does that take up? Because 2000 discs is storable, but if you've been doing this for a few years... do you periodically clear some of them out? Because how large of a room is needed to store something like 10K discs?
Also just wondering since you mentioned the garage sales/prices, are you primarily picking up DVDs or have blu-rays also gotten that inexpensive in that quantity?

I believe that the cat scene was cgi'd as well as The shooting of the crows.
However IMDB trivia
According to the making of-featurette on the DVD, the scene with the crows eating apples was planned to be computer-generated, until a few Czechs showed up with four boxes of real trained crows, and everything worked out fine for a minimum cost.
The Promise - looks promising

I'd say you can stack approximately 150 DVDs from the floor upwards (if you don't have any with weak cases in the lower portions of that big stack) - so in the space where you can put 10 DVDs spread out - not very much room at all - you've got 1,500 all up. But if you've got them stacked that high with no shelf intervening, it can be a bit of a crush on the bottom. I find anything higher than human height - up to 100 - can be a bit much. You have to start at the corners, because a stack that high is very unstable. They need to support each other. So you build multiple stacks next to each other at the same time. Stacked that way though, the volume they take up - you could perhaps fit however many you could spread out on the floor x 100. For 10K, that would be 100. In an empty room, they become the walls up to a certain height - and then eventually one day you have to accept the fact that you double stack - which means you start losing sight of those that get "bricked in" - especially at the bottom of a pile that now has a second pile building in front of it. You want to make sure it's the titles that you don't think you'll ever need again for a long time - but everything always changes. A good recent example is a film called The Machinist, which I'm sure I have somewhere - and I'd like to know for sure - but checking behind stacks is now more trouble than it's worth knowing. So - and here's a nice little absurdity - I saw it going for $1 so I thought "Hell with it" and bought it again for probably the second time (although - in my defense - this was a really nice boxed version that looks more spiffy and could have more special features.)
Also just wondering since you mentioned the garage sales/prices, are you primarily picking up DVDs or have blu-rays also gotten that inexpensive in that quantity?
There is one place I go to where it doesn't matter what it is. If it's one "thing" it's $1 - I've picked up boxed sets of blu-rays for $1. Some items have never been opened, and are still shrink-wrapped packaged. Another is much the same, except their price is $2. Another place their price jumps all over the place - but still, some things are worth paying $4 for - other items are inexplicably too pricey. Rubbish you could get in a 2 dollar store for $2 and they're charging $3. It helps though, to know the people that work at the places. Then you can haggle, or they let things go. I have haunts that are so regular I'm on a first name basis with the people that work there, and they often don't put incoming stock on the shelves until I've gone through it first - which said out loud, sounds kind of unfair - but they know it's my passion and they cater for me.

A Moment of Innocence (1996)
What a fun odd little movie...this is a docudrama about an experience in the directors youth. 20 years ago during the fall of the Shah the director stabbed a policeman. This film is the story of shooting a single scene and the works that go into a single scene.
What's most striking about the film is that parts of it are terrible. The dialogue is just very weird and all the actors are bad, It's basically a mix of The Traveling Players and One Cut of the Dead. But what makes the film good is what you see behind the filming. This is very much a docu-drama where you are getting this picture of Iran and it's shot beautifully. The story is not important at all and it makes no sense but it's all the little touches and the background and how it's shot that's remarkable. I also laughed a few times (of course they then explained the jokes...a common problem with this type of film).
It's a brief film and even though it's 75 minutes you do feel the run time at points because this is a gimmick film. But the film has a lot of characters ideas and tonal changes to stretch this 5 minutes of plot into a feature length film.

I think this is my 3rd time seeing this, and it was my best viewing. I've always preferred the 1978 version but now I'm not so sure. It's not my type of horror so I don't think it'll ever be a favorite, but it's undoubtedly a very good film. The fact that it's an old black and white film with this story adds a certain something that I just can't put my finger on. I think it has something to do with a wholesome appearance that gives in to a story that is legitimately creepy. I've always thought that it was the perfect length but this time I wanted it to continue. I think that's a good thing. I enjoyed seeing it again.

A Moment of Innocence (1996)
I wonder if this was picked as a personal film that has some special meaning for the person who chose it. If so I'd like to know what that meaning was? For me this wasn't anything too deep or too special. I did like the first act with the former Shah's policeman turned actor choosing and then training a would-be actor to play the policeman as his younger self. Those two actors paired well and their time on screen was enjoyable. However the director's story and the actor who would play him didn't always gel well. The pay off of the policeman finding out that the girl he had loved for 20 years was actually using him and was part of the attack that led to the stabbing...that never really paid off in a satisfying way.
What I wanted and didn't get was a first meeting of the policeman and the director who had once stabbed him. That's why their story should've focused on the two men working out the pain that the attack had caused both of them over the last 20 years.

I decided to kick off the Hall of Fame with one of the movies that I never even heard of going into it. Quickly observed that this was a film that may not be up my alley, but I was actually thrown for a loop. The cinematography stood out for me as there was a lot of great camera work as well. The leads performance was quite quiet but I think that's what they were going for and I thought Zoe Heran did a pretty good job portraying quite a difficult character. The story wasn't amazing or anything but I'd say it was directed pretty well. Not a bad start.

Might give this a go. Seems like a nice little story.
But also that you mention cinematography. I saw some clips and it looks good. What impresses me though is that it is filmed on a DSLR. Canon 7D and 5D as far as I know. That’s pretty impressive actually.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers
(1956)
I have seen this film before but long ago. It was nice to see it again but it's not one I would normally pick out to watch. I have friends who would suggest it and I would watch it with them.
Story of a small town in California, whose inhabitants were cloned into uncaring individuals by an alien race. The aliens have intentions to populate the rest of the world using pods to clone the humans.
I did enjoy it and nice to see it again. Nice to see Carolyn Jones as well in this and I did recognize a few others. Did I find it scary or disturbing? No. Did it get my adrenaline going? No, but I'm sure if I watched it back in the 50s, I would have felt differently.
I never rate my films until the end of the hall of fame and I never write too much so don't take it personally because my reviews are my thoughts and my feelings.

By defend, I mainly just mean addressing some of the context surrounding the film and the offscreen events which lead up to it as I think they make the film more interesting. I'll save that for my review though. By 'defend', I don't mean "Disagree with everyone who posts mixed/negative reviews of the film".
Both this film and The Travelling Players are among my favorites, so that's part of my connection to it. I also think this is a really underseen film. It has some similarities to the more well-known Close-Up in the sense that they both combine narrative and documentary filmmaking, but while I like Kiarostami's film quite a bit, I think this one is much better and deserves more recognition.

Goldfinger (1964) - 3
This is the second Bond film I've seen (the first one being Skyfall). While the Bond franchise hasn't been given much focus on my watchlist so far, this film made me more eager to check out a few others (I'll probably watch them in order). That's not to say I loved this film per se, but that I enjoyed the sum of its parts well enough. The goofy spy action vibes might not appeal to everyone, but I think the film found the right balance to make them work. As a result, the various spy gadgets on Bond's car, the hidden areas and trap doors in Goldfinger's stud farm, Oddjob's extreme strength, and even the occasional cheesy effects impressed me quite a bit. The action in the first half hour, particularly the car chase, was a lot of fun due to all the spy gadgets utilized throughout it (the smokescreen, the slippery gel (not sure what it's actually called), the ejector seat, the mounted machine guns). Unfortunately though, this charm dissipated after the first act as the remainder of the film did away with these gadgets. The rest of the action, by comparison, was more standard and less exciting. The final shootout, for instance, which mainly involved some sub-par gun and fistfights left me rather cold. I did, however, enjoy some of the violence surrounding Bond quite a lot due to how unexpectedly cruel those scenes were (the iconic gold paint scene, in particular, is terrific). I also love how ineffective Bond was. He spent most of the film being captured and had several failed escape attempts. This was an unexpected change from how I thought he was going to be portrayed. Though yeah, that whole rape scene was rather problematic, especially when you realize it set Bond's plan to save the day in motion. Issues aside, I enjoyed this film and I hope the other Bond films I watch will tap more into its potential.

Goldfinger(1964)
This is the first Sean Connery James Bond film I have seen all the way through. I have seen pieces of his, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan, Timothy Dalton, George Lazenby and even David Niven. Are they good? I really dont know because the only Bond movies I have seen all the way through, are Daniel Craig's.
James Bond, MI's 007, takes down a Gold-loving criminal. Along the way, he flirts and sleeps with women, even the criminal kind.
This isn't a bad film but the technology used and green screen are typical of a film from this era of cinema. Would I watch another James Bond film starring Sean Connery? probably. Will I feel the same about everything? yes.
Not a bad watch but not one I would normally watch. I still haven't watched Craig's "No Time to Die". I plan on rectifying that soon. Will I be sad when Craig is no longer Bond? Yes, because I highly enjoy his version of the character. Plus, Craig is nice to look at.
Note: I like Craig's Q better than Connery's Q because I enjoy films with Ben Whishaw and his weapons are way cooler.

I keep most of my DVDs on several bookcase shelves and a bunch of narrow DVD racks all over the house. A large bookcase, (about 6 feet high by about 2 feet across), can hold over 300 DVDs.
I just did a quick count, and this bookcase has the equivalent of about 308 DVDs on it, including regular DVDs and Blu-rays. I counted one shelf of DVDs, and multiplied it by the number of shelves, so that doesn't account for box sets. (Sorry about the blurry picture, but it was just a quick picture taken on my phone. I can get a better one if you want, but it was just to show an example of how the DVDs fit on a bookcase.)

A Moment of Innocence (Mohsen Makhmalbaf, 1996)
I was drawn to this own first simply because of the poster and didn't know anything about it otherwise. If I had read that this was a quiet docudrama about making a movie I'd have been turned off pretty heavily but this actually turned out to be an absolute delight. Love how recreating this old event gives us a wholly new story shaped by the views of the younger actors and their interpretation of this specific moment in time. Its such a well put together film structurally and really enjoy how and when information is doled out, specifically how the cop finds out he was set up. There's also just so many cute moments, like the young actors talking about saving mankind and the almost comedy of errors of getting this one scene shot. Makhmalbar and the cop having zero screen time together is also a good touch and that last shot is money. Of course it also helps that the film looks great and that I vibe with the aesthetics hard. Yeah, really loved this one.

If you Google this movie it says crime drama at the top of the page but that's nonsense. It's a comedy all the way. I watched this in 2020 after Moviegal recommended it to me a couple of years prior. It's the funniest foreign language film I've seen.
Foreign language comedies can be tough for me, but nothing is lost in translation with this one. It could easily be an American movie. I wouldn't go so far as to call it crude, but it's a movie that could be offensive to some people. To be really funny, you have to risk being offensive. Not too short and not too long, with excellent performances. I guess people could be interested in themes like faith and good vs evil, but this never bogs down with sappiness. I laughed loudly many times and I don't usually do that.

So, just crunching the numbers there, every 2K of disc would be 6-7 bookcases (not an inconceivable number in a house). If Phoenix has been getting 2K/year for, let's say 5 years (and assuming they aren't getting rid of any), that's about 33 bookcases. Now, they said they just stack them in a room (it sounds like free standing, which I wasn't expecting), so that changes things a lot. But, um, 33 seems like a lot of book cases in my mind's eye.

I will admit, even with streaming and 4K blu-rays, I'm still a little surprised regular blu-rays are going for that cheap (the ones I end up buying sure aren't.) But I'm not really going to places that sell other things that might have a bargain bin for movies.

I guess you could say I collect movies too. When I first starting getting into movies I bought DVD sets and found out that the limited room under my TV stand quickly filled up. That's when I switched to storing everything as .mp4 files. Depending on the size of the video file I can get a lot of movies onto a 4tb hdd. On average of 1gb per movie file that would be 4000 movies that could be stored. Though many of my movies are more in the 500mb size.

I used to buy a lot of dvd, bluray and 4K but have cut back over the past few years. I only buy if something I really want and is nostalgic comes to 4k or for some reason, after 2 moves, I can't find a dvd I know I own. I havexa storage unit because I went from house to an apartment.
I must have close to 500. I know with Criterion, I have over 125 discs.
I collect a lot of movies. I'm a movie-a-holic. I could quit if I wanted to, but I don't want to! I have 8 bookshelves (of differing sizes) and 2 lockers with movies in them. I have over 300 Criterions.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers

"I'm sorry, alright? I'll never say anything bad about Paul Blart: Mall Cop ever again!"
This is the second Invasion of the Body Snatchers adaptation I've seen, the first being the 1978 one, which I watched a few years ago. If I could only choose one, it would be that one, but I still enjoyed this adaptation nearly as much. I like how universally applicable it is in that it doesn't call out what real world threat inspired its pod people. It could very well be communism given it's from the '50s, but despite that elephant in the room and the period production values, the tension in my viewing came from how the movie made me think about my own demons. The claustrophobic sets and voyeuristic cinematography escalate this tension in the best way for how they make Miles and Becky seem like they're in a laboratory maze. The gut-churning "hatching" scene - that squelching noise is forever etched into my memory - and the pleasantly subtle way the movie reveals when someone isn't who they say they are deserve credit for being classic examples of less is more. It all culminates in the best way with the most sane and trustworthy of our heroes, which also probably applied before the crisis hit, in the most different circumstances possible: ranting and raving like a lunatic in the middle of a highway.
With all that said, why is this movie so scary? I think it's because it taps into the fear of everyone you know and everything you've worked for disappearing and not being able to do anything about it. As more of the people in Miles and Becky’s' life become pod people, I had the same sensation I have when I watch election coverage and the candidates I voted for do badly or when I sit in the basement during a tornado warning. It's also why the Borg are such a terrifying Star Trek villain, why the similar John Carpenter's The Thing and They Live have also stood the test of time and why this story has been and will continue to be remade. Again, I still prefer the 1978 version, mostly for personal reasons like it being closer to my generation, having actors I grew up watching, etc. I also think it has a better and more memorable ending as opposed to this one's, which I didn't have to verify on IMDB that it's focused grouped. It's still close, and I think this one also deserves to be called a classic. Why, oh why, though, did they have to show that sign with 25 cent gas prices?

Torgo, so when you watched the 70s one, did you not know who Kevin McCarthy was/that it was a callback to the end of the 50s one?
I grew up shortly after the 70s one, but grew up with the 50s one (because you can show a little kid the 50s one). Didn't see the 70s one until my early thirties, and was quite surprised I liked it noticeably more. Probably just because the 70s are kind of my sweet spot for aesthetic, and well, they had some great actors in there. But make of that what you will.
Torgo, so when you watched the 70s one, did you not know who Kevin McCarthy was/that it was a callback to the end of the 50s one?Wow, I don't remember him being in the '70s version. I'll have to rewatch it sometime soon.
To be honest, the only movies I recall seeing him in besides The Howling is Innerspace. What a good villain he is in that one.

Anomalisa (Kaufman 2015)
*SPOILERS
Hey looks like I'm the first to review this so I'm snagging that image before anyone else does!
Guess what? I was impressed by Anomalisa. Which surprised me as I usually don't care for animated movies. But I was engaged and quite interested in the stories outcome. I went into this blind and hadn't even heard of it before as I've been leaving under a rock:p
At first I thought it was really odd that the taxi driver and bell boy and others all sounded alike. I thought that must be some gimmick that would grow thin real quickly...When a female character appeared and they also spoke with that same male sounding voice I wondered if they were suppose to be symbolic transgender characters. I also had noticed the lines on the face of the characters and thought that was an odd choice. So at the start I was in the dark.
But then it all made sense when Michael meets Emily and Lisa, and Lisa speaks with a woman's voice. It was clear to me that Michael was lost in a sea of sameness with Lisa being the sole difference. I thought that was pretty interesting. The inclusion of Lisa gave the film a lot of depth while deepening the mystery of what was up? At one point I thought Michael might be some type of serial hedonist and his sincerity with Lisa was a line of BS just to get her in bed. Of course that wasn't the case. I did love the fact that I didn't know what was coming next and what was next was his crazy dream when he sees the manager in the hotel basement.
Like 95% of the movies I've seen, the climax of the character's story didn't touch me. It was well done so no complaints but his meltdown at the lecture seemed like a case of telling the audience what was up with Michael. I assume I was suppose to hit an emotional peak during the vocalizations of his isolation feelings speech, but I didn't.
The film ended well (for me) when he arrives back home and all the voices are one....just like the Borg.
Solid nom!

I haven't seen many of Herzog's films, however, I did enjoy this watch.
I know Werner Herzog was in The Mandalorian and one of the criminals was played by Wilhelm von Homburg, which was in Ghostbuster II.

I'm a little surprised that's your first Herzog. I take it you haven't seen his remake of Nosferatu then. I know you said 70's horror movies bore you and that one honestly leaves a number of people cold (at least on their first viewing), so I guess I can't say I'd recommend it to you. But he has made other movies. I personally always think Aguirre is the place to start (and then Even Dwarfs Started Small), but I also don't have the same appreciation for Fitzcarraldo that other people do.

I am actually wondering just how many physical discs PHOENIX74 has at this point.
I did a count, and I have 16 large bookshelves lining the walls of my place (and I have a plan for freestanding ones in strategic places, because wall space is nearly finished.) Roughly, 400-500 will fit in one, but many are double stacked. I have one of them dedicated to film literature. One bookshelf caters to television series, and another documentaries and other non-movie media.
The question of how many physical discs I have is one that has fascinated me for a while now. So many cases hold 2 discs, or more, and I really want to know how many I have. The task of counting them would take days - and so I've never taken it on. It's a hard thing to even estimate.
Well, I'll say for MovieGal, since I'm also an apartment dweller and space is really limited for me, I picked up some of these recently to extend the storage area for my collection:

I used to keep just discs in storage containers similar to those. To hold my DVDs, lets just say it's 10,000 - then I'd need 358 of those things. As it's $28 for one that holds 28, it would cost me $10,000, which isn't an attractive prospect. I'm imagining walls of them, my home looking like one of those rooms they store microfilm in at a big library.
To free-stack without tipping, you need to build at least 5 or 6 stacks next to each other so they give mutual support.

Yes. At $28/28 discs, that would drive up your average price of dvd from $1 to $2.
But more seriously, I'm in a city apartment sized dwelling, so I don't have an immediate reference point, but 16 bookshelves seems like a lot. However scattered across mutliple rooms, that seems... do-able? I don't know. Are you starting to run short on space? Do you foresee your purchasing habits slowing down due to lack of physical space? (I actually shifted towards buying what I could digitally* a number of years ago just because I hit my physical space limit quickly and have been doing what I can to expand what I can store in my limited space as there are still physical discs that I still want to be buying).
*: Fwiw for people who also do this, KinoNow sells their movies digitally that you can download without DRM, if such things matter to you. Their selection is, well, eclectic and it is only one label, but it's something (but I don't think you'll ever find something going for less than $4.99 on there).

Something I can tell you is I used to have movie posters, framed photographs, clocks etc etc etc on the walls of my place. This is a side to life that has disappeared to me, and now against walls there are only Bookshelves and free-standing stacks of DVDs - my life's obsession has arrived, and I'm somewhat detached from the kind of home I grew up in (which would perhaps have two bookshelves in it - on which books were on.) I still have the framed movie posters and other stuff - it's just stored in my outside storage room where various items go to gather cobwebs and dust.
Previously I lived in an inner-city apartment, and I actually did some home improvement which converted all the walls into shelving - so instead of bookshelves, all the walls themselves were shelves. I had way less back then, but what I did have still filled most of the walls of that smaller place.
Yeah - sorry guys for this long-winded conversation. Sometimes you simply don't realise how long one is going to develop into.

Or will you start taking inventory of what you actually want to keep (or start renting storage lockers somewhere?) Obvious question (sorry to ask)... do friends, family, SO's, dates think you have a hoarding problem or does it seem to have the sense of being this dedicated room for your collecting habits?

If the bookcase is deep enough, (and if you have a system so you know where your DVDs are sorted on the shelves), you could put another row of DVDs in front of the DVDs and double the number of DVDs per shelf. (I usually put Funko Pops and other collectibles in front of my DVDs.)
87771
I live in a one-bedroom co-op apartment, and I have five bookcases that size, (5-shelves), plus two bookcases with four shelves instead of five, plus one 3-shelf bookcase, three tall narrow DVD racks, and two short narrow DVD racks. Plus I still have several large boxes of DVDs that I haven't put on shelves yet.
I usually buy the DVDs when I find them at the right price, and then I worry about figuring out where to put them later. (But I sell stuff online, so I have a large off-site storage space where I keep my inventory, and that's where I keep the overflow DVDs until I find room for them.)

For Phoenix:
I googled the term, it sounds like you need "Library Rolling Stack Shelving | Compact Book Stacks on Rails System (https://www.southwestsolutions.com/divisions/library/library-rolling-stack-shelving-compact-book-stacks-on-rails-system/)," to help make sure your collection has the authentic collection vibe it probably warrants when people visit, as opposed to hoarding. It probably would cost a pretty penny, but it'd probably be pretty awesome once you have it. You could even come up with a cataloging system to keep track of where a movie should be stored. Maybe first each row would be by release date. Then by title, alphabetically within. That way you'd know where a movie should be (ignoring the movies released under multiple titles).

Unless you're moving your discs around, that's a pretty expensive way to store them. Take a look at the websites for stores like Walmart and Target. You can get smaller bookcases for the same price or cheaper, and they'll hold a lot more DVDs. They have a lot of inventory on their websites that they don't usually have in stock in the stores, and shipping is usually free if your order is over $35, which is usually easy to reach if one of your items is a bookcase, even if it's a small bookcase.
Just make sure that you're buying from the actual store, and not an outside seller who sells through their site. Look for where it says something like "Sold and shipped by" with the store's name.

I want to see pictures:D I don't know about anyone else but I'm fascinated by the description of all your movies.
I've often wanted to share recent purchases on MoFo - upper picture the last fortnight (sitting on the table), lower picture last couple of months (ready for sorting into sections - and displayed so I have fast access to those I meant to watch before losing sight of - double stacked against my 'prime' shelf' - I have three prime shelves that are reserved for places of honor. But I've run out of room and need a fourth. - and there's one shelf aside from those dedicated to Criterions) You'll see a small stack of around 12 movies to the upper right in the second picture - they're either new movies that are going to be added to the best spot on my prime shelves (it includes Raiders, Jaws etc, movies I reviewed for past Halls), and now have to wait to be reintegrated.
For those who want to peruse - (the titles on the bottom pic didn't come out as clear as I'd like.)

PHOENIX74, I'm really curious, are you running out of space? If you are, do you foresee yourself slowing down in terms of buying physical discs because of it? Or will you start taking inventory of what you actually want to keep (or start renting storage lockers somewhere?) Obvious question (sorry to ask)... do friends, family, SO's, dates think you have a hoarding problem or does it seem to have the sense of being this dedicated room for your collecting habits?
Yes. That's a question that's becoming more of an urgent issue lately for me - it can't go on like this for much longer, so what do I do? Cull the DVDs I think really aren't worth having, or store them somewhere. At the end of the VHS era, a close friend of mine starting collecting them as they were sold off - and he filled his house much like I've done with DVDs. He set me off collecting as well, but during my last move I threw nearly all of my VHS tapes out (he wanted to go into a partnership with me hiring a storage locker, but the continual cost just for items I didn't value as much as him put me off.) I had around 3,000 VHS tapes by that time - which filled the entire volume (the entire volume solid) of a really big walk-in closet I had plus much other space. I don't see myself throwing all my DVDs and Blu-Rays out (the special features on them are valuable to me) - but I'm facing a situation where there's simply no choice. The physical space is going to make this very inconvenient.
To throw those VHS tapes out, I needed the cooperation of my local council, a few industrial sized bins they tow away on trucks.
Dates, new friends etc - well, it's a big talking point when they come over, but nobody has taken issue with me about it. I have a cousin who is a genuine hoarder, and the difference with me is I keep it all tidy, clean and ordered. You won't trip over DVDs at my pla....well, you will trip over DVDs, but what I'm saying is I don't have piles just sitting in a heap in the middle of rooms. They're stacked, orderly, and any laying around are just that way because I've watched them recently, or am about to.
In the end, I think I'm going to have to cull unimportant ones. Ones I can get easily streaming that have no special features.
