10cc is one that comes to mind. The first four songs I ever heard by them are so different from each other and were produced around the same time.
-One Night In Paris
-I'm Not In Love
-The Things We Do For Love
-Dreadlock Holiday
With most bands, there's evolution, changes with time or new members, but it's nice to listen to have many different styles on a single album, or around the same chronology.
The only other band I can think of like that is Little Feat, but I'm sure there's more.

I only know one song by The Tubes and like it - "What Do You Want From Life?"
Alan Parsons Project is one of my favorite bands, but they're kinda prog-pop like Pink Floyd, who was an obvious influence. Alan engineered "Dark Side", too. His "Time" sounds just like Pink Floyd's "Us and Them" :)

Actually, I just thought of "Games People Play" and thought about it for a while, and think you're right. There's more exceptions to the rule, but still important for me to mention.
My favorites are: Shadows of a Lonely Man... Silence and I.. I love the first album the most - I love instrumentals.
But then you have "Snake Eyes" and "Breakdown".. I think using multiple vocalists helps, too. It was nice to see Alan in concert singing "Don't Answer Me" and playing the acoustic. It seems like their hits were the eclectic stuff, which is usually the opposite.
Supertramp is a band to mention. Their hits are SO much different than their dramatic prog-rock.
