Anyone playing this new Internet game? It’s really rather good & it’s only one word per day so one doesn’t spend hours doing it. It’s gone viral for some reason.
I actually solved the word yesterday in not too great a time.

are those letters in the bottom right the letters in the word? I'm already confused.

It is confusing at first. One gets a blank grid - 5 letters across & 6 attempts to solve it. Yellow tiles mean the letters you chose are part of the answer, but not in the order shown. Grey tiles means the letters don’t exist in the answer. Green tiles means the letter is correct & in the correct place. I’m not explaining it well & the cartoon is misleading.
This is today’s puzzle. I have chosen “relax” as my first guess. “R” and “A” are the only two letters in the answer, but not in the order shown. The 3 remaining letters are grey tiles so are not in the answer.

I haven’t returned to the puzzle yet as I’m rushing. One does need paper & pencil I think.
First one I did I got - - ery. Having looked at the vowels (important) I knew a 2nd vowel had to be either “u” or “i”. Gave up & was kicking myself the next day as it’s obviously QUERY.

i think i was in part lucky because i guessed the right number of things in the right order, it doesn't hurt to use web pages like this, and yeah i used gedit (linux version of notepad) as you were insinuating in order to put down letters that turned up grey:

I like it, and I've gotten all four I've tried (though I was down to my last guess yesterday!).
I like that there's only one per day. It's a quick 5 minute or less brain teaser.
I always start with the word "SPACE" and then "GROUT". Then I just play around with any letters that are correct.
I REALLY appreciate the little keyboard at the bottom showing what letters you already guessed.
EDIT: The only thing that catches me sometimes is that I forget you can use letters more than once!

5 minutes or less? Not me. Took me several times over at least an hour to figure out today’s. Yesterday’s even longer. I’m two for two & I would imagine it gets easier. I’m gonna try your 2 words tomorrow because I never know what word to start with.
I haven’t quite got the hang of the little keyboard at the bottom yet. I’m probably making things harder than they should be. As is my wont.
Mesmerized would probably like this puzzle.
Yes, Wordle is a great little game.
I'm part of a group of friends in a video game community that already has a history of becoming obsessed with things like this. One of us finds a game (or video series, sometimes), shares it with the others, and it takes over for awhile. This is the latest. I would've jumped all over it initially, as it's exactly the kind of thing I like, but I was moving and pretty busy, so I only started a few days ago. Really enjoyable.

I like my two words because they get most of the vowels and some common consonants in there. I know someone else always starts with POEMS. GUISE could also be a good starter, or ABOUT.
I do them quickly because I am impatient. Despite having an extensive vocabulary, I always bomb at games like Scrabble because I just play the first word I see.

The strangest thing I did during this pandemic was to become obsessed with online solitaire. Never played it in my life, but I have had to delete the app as it was taking over my life. It was just so relaxing & comforting when the cards played out. So very bizarre.

Never heard of it. Not a games player by any means. Husband is not familiar with or good at any kind of game so nobody to play with. My late SIL & I were devoted players of cribbage when we lived in NYC. Brought my set to CT when I married, but nobody to play with. Still sitting in the cupboard collecting dust.
EDIT: The only thing that catches me sometimes is that I forget you can use letters more than once!
What really bugs me is that they don't even mention it in "how to play" Spent like five extra minutes trying to figure a word from the remaining letters, and there was none. Then tried the first one that came to mind with a duplicate letter and that was it.
This doesn't seem too difficult, honestly, but I've done a lot of crosswords and stuff like that.

I think that if you have a decent vocabulary and "see" words well (god that sounds snobby), it's not that hard of a game. I also appreciate that they don't seem to be using super obscure words.

It makes sense, achieving order is inherently satisfying and sometimes a game is just challenging enough to be engaging but easy enough to feel breezy, and that combination is great for killing time.
I loved (still love!) a very odd game called Regency Solitaire awhile back. I still play it sometimes. It's not really solitaire, you literally just have to find cards one higher or lower than the card at the top of your deck, and it's sitting on top of this weird Victorian/Jane Austen-like frame story. And there's little undo abilities and some cards require keys. REALLY simple but SO well done that it's hypnotic.
My obsession for the last year or so is a game called NERTS, which is competitive solitaire, if you can believe that.
EDIT: The only thing that catches me sometimes is that I forget you can use letters more than once!

might be cheating and all, but i use that strategy when when my brain feels exhausted of possibilities, kinda like how i play videogames: i only look up the answer when i feel really trapped.
i just won my second wordle on the 4th guess, because i was struggling. I found out what 3 of the letters were, and one was in the right position, so i did a google search "5 letter words that end with _." Then, i saw one that british people like to use immediately (you can PM me for the word if you want) that conformed to the letters that i found to be correct, and voila, ya' brits! :p
Stirchley, do you like to play crossword puzzles? My family would play them, they're more open ended and difficult. I like wordle because it's easy enough for anyone with a computer to play.
Yeah, I don't allow myself any outside reference at all once I start. Only thing I might do is open a text file or spreadsheet so I can rearrange the letters I know are there.
I did happen, before ever playing Wordle, to read a tweet from someone suggesting a couple of works that were particularly good to start with, which I can't forget, but it's anecdotal so who knows.

Second day, did well but not as fast as the first day. I'm not going to Google anything, since that's way too easy then. It's only a few minutes a day so I don't see it as a possible time-suck going forward. :)
The tough part is staring at the screen with nothing but blanks staring back at you. So much depends on that first guess, I suspect.

I was reading this thread before playing this morning, and i felt like a un-intelligent cheat since you all refrain from using the google the way i did the last two games...so, today i only used google to see if words in my head were spelled they way i thought they were...
and what i discovered is...using a notepad makes the game harder anyways, it's better just to keep staring at the screen. Luckily, i got it on the 5th guess out of 6. I have not lost yet having played 3 times! They make it easy in the sense that they don't let you make up words to see if they are words and check if the letters are there like i tried. Now i'm not going to use google to find "5 letter words that are x", but i don't think it's cheating to see if a word in your head is spelled a certain way.
If ya'll are feeling particularly like challenging yourself, they do have a hard mode which you can turn on in the settings, this makes it so that if you guess a letter correctly, then you must use it in all your geusses...seems like that insure you win a higher % of the time.

Funny you say this. Apparently, some Americans are angry on Twitter that “Brit words” are being used even though the creator is British. They were furious over “query”, which I don’t see as particularly British. Yesterday, the same thing. Furious because they don’t know what an “abbey” is. They only know Abby as a female name. WTH! They’ve never heard of an abbey!!
The only thing that wasn't absolutely clear is that you, what? Just randomly guess a word with that many letters in it for the first try? Or did I miss something about how to do your first guess?

Okay, to me, this is a flaw in the game. I got this word yesterday that meshed with the letters available at that moment, but I didn’t solve it because, apparently, this wasn’t the word they wanted.
84389
So then I got this word that meshed with the letters available at that moment, but that wasn’t the answer either.
84390
Finally got it when I doubled the “b”.
84391
My point is if you find a correct word the game should be over. Even if it’s not the word the creator has chosen for the day.
I don't follow. What would the criteria be for success? It can't just be any dictionary word at any time, since you could "win" immediately. And lots of words will mesh when you've only determined a few of the letters, too.
The tension (and genius) of the game is that, when you've matched a few letters, you have to decide to risk an actual guess, versus using a word you don't expect to be right in order to find more letters (or nail down more locations).

I would not have described QUERY as a British word, but then, that might be because I work in IT. Requests to databases are called "queries" so it's a lot more familiar for some people than it is for others.

i had been reading 1984 by George Orwell and Daphne Du Maure over the past couple months, and this is a word that british people like to say. Honestly, just have fun with these games, nothing is being measured and there's no "cheating", it's all just based on how much you want to challenge yourself, as humans we're always going to grope for something we can use. Wordle is a fun game and it's better than crossword puzzles in the sense that it's easier. I needed google and british authors to solve that puzzle, it took me most of the guesses!

I edited spoiler tags into that post. Important not to divulge the word until the day is over, since everybody has their own timing/routine for when they play it.
Sorry about that. I was thinking since Pahak disclosed the word - of course he used spoilers - it was okay to show it. Wasn’t thinking. Sort of how my day played out today.

I just downloaded this yesterday.
Hmm, do they have an app? I know there's at least one prominent knockoff already.
Everyone I know just uses the website. They might have both, but it might be a different thing. Just a heads up.

I'm starting to think this is impossible to fail, and I'm not even a native speaker.
I think that's part of why it is so popular. You don't need a particularly strong vocabulary to succeed (by the last try).
For people who take this kind of thing more seriously, they can work on getting it in fewer and fewer rounds.

I totally get the first part. It needs to be quite easy to become popular. The second part isn't necessarily correct, though. The problem is that there's no tactical approach that can consistently take you below a certain number of rounds (my wild guess is that the correct approach averages somewhere around four tries, maybe slightly less). It's not skill-based in the way codewords or crosswords are.

I think it's about 75% luck and 25% skill. I think that 3-4 tries is probably what most skilled players will get on an average day.
But since it takes about 2 minutes to play, it's not a game I'm putting a lot of thought into. It's a fun little hit of success, then on with the day.

i agree with that, the most skillful thing to do is start with words that don't have any repeating letters, yet you're still going to need luck and two guesses in order to gaurantee a win.
Here's a thought though: what's a 5 letter word recognized by wordle the contains the most vowels? That would probably help you solve the puzzle the fastest.
I still haven't lost yet but today i gave up after 2 or 3 guesses because i wanted to do something else.

I can only think of words with three vowels, like "aeons".

I doubt that focusing on just vowels is any better than focusing on letter frequency.

i don't really know how to play the game with perfect strategy, however vowels are the necessary building blocks of english words so the more you can knock out in one guess the better.
a, e, i, o, u
so Takoma11 put forth "aeons", so then "fluid" would tell you a lot about the word to be guessed. Otherwise it is all just luck: hitting the word on the first or second try doesn't indicate any skill.

It seems that someone has made math for this. According to this, the best strategy is to go by the frequency of letters:
https://towardsdatascience.com/a-frequency-analysis-on-wordle-9c5778283363
That article is about the first word only. After two words you'll have all five common vowels anyway so it doesn't matter. The conclusion is that in practice 3 vowel word is a better start than 4 vowel word.
Takoma11
01-17-22, 11:01 PM
Yeah, I basically play with a letter-frequency strategy, though my words might not be the best.
As I said, I just go SPACE, GROUT, and then LYING if I don't have enough letters to make a good guess. Then I basically always get the right word on my 4th round.
Though one day the word is going to be ADDED and I will definitely lose, LOL.
The first time I played, I didn't pay any attention to my words. Last three (I think) I've started, SAINT, WHORE, and if needed, LUCKY. After that article in my previous post, I may change my start to SERAI, DONUT, and if needed, LYMPH. Honestly, though, I doubt that the slight improvement of my starter words would make much of a difference.

"In conclusion, I am not sure if the selection of words for Wordle is a completely random process."
i didn't read the whole thing, but the problem with it is that i don't think those obscure greek-based words talked about the possibilities they select for the right answer. I think they are trying to appeal to the average person, i suspect this because i haven't seen a single answer that i wasn't already familiar with. It also appears to be biased towards british english.

Those "obscure greek-based words" aren't meant to be the solution. They're chosen only due to the letters that are in them (and their position within the word), based on the analysis of all five-letter words in English.

what i was trying to say though is that the data scientist who wrote that included every 5 letter word in the international english dictionary, but it seems that there is a bias, wordle probably isn't randomizing the process to that degree.

Well, it's quite obvious it doesn't (e.g. many of the words mentioned in the article aren't recognized by Wordle). The general spread of the letters should still be very close as there's no reason to assume Wordle has a bias towards certain letters. So, while Wordle operates on a smaller set of words I don't see why the math would be off by a significant degree.

i don't think there's anything obvious about wordle's winning word preference, except that british words are favored: i've played 6 times and 2 of those times were words used more commonly in British english. I also think, based on playing it, that plurals of a singular words are not the winning ones since this would make it harder.

There used to be a game show like this called "Lingo". If you search the App store for Lingo apps, there are several free versions of this game that you can download. (The free versions usually have ads, but there's usually an option to pay to remove the ads if you like the game.)
I found one called "Slang" that has puzzles ranging from 4 letters to 6 letters, and it gives you the first letter of the word. It's easier than this version of Wordle because of the first letter, but it's not as easy as you would think it would be, and you can play multiple games every day.

phew, i played hard mode today and got it on the 6th try. Hard mode may make it easier in some respect, but it takes the luck element almost completely out of the game and forces you to focus which makes it more fun. My methodology is this so far:
-guess "aeons" for vowels.
-use gedit to display stuff in times of desperation
-bash my head against the table.
-use the "5 letter words that ____ " as a last resort for comfort, luckily i didn't have to do that today.
Hard mode may make it easier in some respect
No, it doesn't (unless you're doing the normal mode completely wrong).

That is a four-letter word, as in the slogan CRACK IS WACK. "Whack", on the other hand, is classic onomatopoeia.

After seeing what it is, I reject hard mode as meh. It limits strategy, but sometimes it is to the benefit of the player, not usually, but sometimes. The first couple of games I played, it didn't even occur to me to not use the letters I already knew were up there. Both times I was done in 2 minutes with no problem. My wife reuses the letters because she's trying to guess the word right away and she has no problem. If you look at Stirchley, she's using "hard mode" and maybe doesn't realize it. As far as I'm concerned, limiting strategy just takes a little bit of the fun out of it. If they really wanted to make it a challenge, they would not show any green letters until you guess the final word correctly.

I don't really agree. The normal mode is just a repetitive and automated task. You use the same two words every time. If you're still missing many letters, you use the same third word every time. It reduces most of the game into a simple statistical exercise. In hard mode, you have to start thinking from the 2nd word on.

What do you mean you use the same word?
In normal mode, you have the "starting" words that are designed to eliminate as many common letters as possible (they should also consider the positions the letters commonly are in these short English words). Unless you're lucky and hit almost all green/yellow on your first word, you'll always use the same 2nd word to "see" ten common letters.
In normal mode, I (after some investigation and thinking) always started SERAI and DONUT. Once you find out good words, it's detrimental to deviate from them. In hard mode, you can (usually) have only one fixed word to rely on. Everything after that changes from day to day, making you think more and rely less on predetermined statistical conventions. It makes Wordle more about vocabulary and wits, while the normal mode is almost purely statistical exercise.

I've only played 7 games so far but I haven't used any of the same words and I just don't think that way. I've been using words that don't have letters in common with the word from the day before. Today I used cited, tomorrow I'm planning on using ***** or *****, assuming I can remember those words tomorrow. My second word will completely depend on the results of my first word. As of now, that's thousands of options.

The way I see it, if it's mandatory that I have to use the same letters again, it gives me less to think about.
It limits the number of letters you can eliminate with your first two words (assuming you hit something with the first). It also limits the number of possible words to use as your second and prevents you from having a go-to word beyond the first. These limitations increase difficulty, put more emphasis on vocabulary, and generally bring thinking into the game one word earlier.
While these are my opinions, I'm quite sure they're also mathematically correct assumptions. I'm a min-maxer with a long history of gaming. I guess it needs to be clarified that when I speak of the "right" way to play, I tend to mean "optimal" - the right way to play is the way you enjoy the most.
And today's word was easy for a change.

I don't quite agree with the bolded part. Let's say we are playing each other and we each get 2 yellow tiles on our first word. You are forced to use them on your second word, you most likely get at least 1 right, and going into your 3rd word you know where 2 letters go at minimum. If I spend the second word eliminating letters, there's a good chance that I'm still not sure where those 2 letters go, so going into word 3 you have an advantage. I'm not saying that hard mode isn't harder on average over time, but for certain games it will give you an edge. A decision has been taken out of your hands and you are forced to guess the correct word for each move. Sometimes you will be right. If I'm simply eliminating letters, I can't be right. The result is that you have a better chance than I do at getting the answer in 2 or 3 words. Of course you also have a better chance of it taking you 5 or 6. So it depends on the game. I would also say that having a decision made for you and using a system takes some thinking out of the game.
Agreed, it all depends on what your personal goal is.

Or if you're extremely adventurous, there's also a Finnish version: https://sanuli.fi. I guess I'll have to warn you that in my opinion, the Finnish version is harder, even for a native speaker. Not only do we have more vowels in common use, but we also have much more doubled letters that make the elimination game quite a bit more difficult :D

I guessed FIGHT for my third word. From there it could have been EIGHT, MIGHT, NIGHT, LIGHT, TIGHT, SIGHT, RIGHT, HIGHT, or WIGHT. The only three of those I could eliminate were TIGHT, NIGHT and MIGHT (my first two words were MATCH and THINK). I guessed EIGHT for my fourth word. Totally depends on your strategy. Some people like to know the vowels, right away, so use a word like ADIEU first, then start figuring out consonants. I start with something different every day.
I'm actually going to try a different starting word next time. I don't have any math to show, but I'm starting to feel that in hard mode the three vowel words aren't necessarily the best. At least I feel that hitting two vowels right away in hard mode limits your options a lot. I've been thinking something like STRIP or STRAP.

I assume the guy on the radio must've just been talking about it as a worry: the New York Times bought it, but:

It's a pretty easy format to mimic, anyway, if someone tries to make playing it too arduous.

I thought you were actually interested in the strategy behind wordle, but I guess not.
What I mean is this. If you believe you have a better chance to solve the word in hard mode style, there's nothing preventing you from doing that in the normal mode. In most scenarios, I still believe that "eliminating" the second set of five letters on your second word is the "correct" play, and you usually don't have that possibility in the hard mode.
Normal mode doesn't restrict you in any way, but the hard mode does. If hard mode is easier for you, then you can play "hard mode" in normal, too. It's not the normal mode that's forcing you to do something, but you yourself.

That's really wierd that that's the focus your critique...I think it's important to point out here that there's nothing "forced" about me playing the game, i do it voluntarily for my own enjoyment. Does it matter this much to you that i'm playing the game in a logical way, rather than trying to make it harder on purpose? Whoops! I need to put in more bad guesses because now the game is too easy and my intellegence in the eyes of pahaK is threatened because of it.
However, i do think design is something to consider, and since hard mode eliminates my need to use notepad or more advanced google searches, i'm going to keep using it. Just typing words to get letters is inefficient.

i want to point out that i still did resort to using notepad in order to get one of my hard mode trials...it worked.

FFS. I don't how to make it more clear.
You can play normal mode exactly the same as hard mode. That's the reason why hard mode can never be easier than the normal mode. It has nothing to do with what's the optimal strategy.
No more contributions from me to this particular subject.

if i've brought you to the point of actually being upset and offended, here's a final contribution from me: my experience says that hard mode makes it easier, i have no other evidence than my experience to validate that which means its fine for me to feel that way. You haven't come up with anything to contradict my version of reality.
You can get off your high horse about "right and wrong", we already established that there is a bias towards certain words anyway, therefore nobody knows how to play the game "correctly" anyways. Playing this is not about looking smart for me. I don't need to be validated by some word game on the internet.
Why are you getting so mad about me saying that hard mode makes the game easier? Maybe if this makes you so mad, maybe you should start thinking about what you say to people on the internet anyways?

Felt a little frustrated when I got this. It's not like I didn't put a little thought into which letters I was using, but this is the 2nd day in a row I had some decent luck when I didn't have a lot to work with. It would be nice if there was a little more creativity with the words that are being used.

haha, had another one where i guessed the last 4 letters in the first 3 guesses, then it took me all the remaining guesses to hit the right first letter...
