Welcome to the third Personal Recommendation Hall of Fame. To help prepare for the upcoming countdown, this HoF will only include non English speaking movies. If you're unfamiliar with how this works, take a peek at the links below-

Personal Recommendation Hall of Fame I
Winner-Neiba (https://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=61062)

Personal Recommendation Hall of Fame II
Winner-TheUsualSuspect (https://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=62530)

You must choose movies from the available lists that the other members have not seen!

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/G/01/digital/video/hero/Movies/Top250/B004D1CK32_shichininnisamurai_S00._RI_.jpg

I'm not sure how it's going to work for the countdown, so for this HoF, silent films are not eligible.

If you want to nominate a movie longer than 160 minutes for someone, let me know and I'll ask the person if it's ok. If a member has no time limit restrictions, feel free to mention it in the thread when you sign up.

https://i.pinimg.com/originals/4f/e0/4f/4fe04f185ea35e05ff25390f4033e0ef.png

There's a little bit of a time crunch, so if you want to participate, say so in this thread by Sunday night March 14th. Start sending your nominations to me via PM Monday morning and we'll get this under way.

There is a firm due date of June 5th regardless of how many members we have. Please do not join if you can't finish by then.

Bring it on and have fun!

Great, you've been so good in the Roulette thread. Keep in mind that you're picking from movies that people haven't crossed off in their lists section.

So, just to be clear, the amount of films I would have to watch would depend on the amount of people that join in?

June 5 and I picked that so that it's a few days before the deadline to submit a ballot for the countdown.

I'm a bit wary about that deadline. I'm currently behind on the HOF24, which it's supposed to end Mid-April, plus I have my own Monthly Movie Loot challenge (https://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=63119), so I don't know. I like the premise a lot, but I'll think about it.

Take a peek Sunday to see how many members there are. 11 members would equal 1 movie per week.

Just to be clear, the goal is still the same as in the 1st Personal Recommendation?
Cricket wrote: This will be a different kind of specialty Hall of Fame, not one in which a movie will win, but rather a member.

Instead of the normal practice of nominating one movie for everyone to watch, you will nominate a different movie for every member. You will choose what your fellow members will be watching by picking one that they haven't crossed off from any of their MoFo lists. So make sure that you're lists are up to date! Maybe you'll pick a movie you think someone will love, or maybe you'll pick a favorite of your own that you want someone else to watch. The choice is yours!I ask because there's some new people joining and they might assume the goal is like the 24th HoF where the member picks films that they love...but here we choose films for others that hopefully they will love and will rate high, and the person with the highest score wins.

Can you say again how we know which films people have and have not seen? (Am I supposed to be filling out lists somewhere for others to look at?)

And for anyone picking a film for me, I do not watch films from directors or actors who are sexual predators, and especially people who have victimized children. So if you recommend me something from someone like Victor Salva or Roman Polanski, I won't be sassy/salty about it, I simply will not watch that film. (Not that anyone trying to win this thing would recommend me such a film, but just a general heads up). Same thing goes for films featuring unsimulated animal abuse/violence. I am not opposed to violence or even disturbing content, but harm that has been done to actual living beings completely ruins a film for me. Work and life have been stressful, and I'm not going to bend this personal preference just to be "in the spirit of the game" or whatever. If you are concerned about a film, just give me the title and I'll be happy to let you know if I'd consider it to be in the no-zone.

Yea just like Mark said. You have your lists filled out so every other member will pick one from those lists that you haven't seen. You look at the other participant's lists and pick a movie for each one that they haven't seen. You just want to make sure your lists are up to date.

Classics with strong character work.

But so that no one thinks this is tipping my hand, I tried to go with the spirit of what people like as opposed to strict demographics. So some people tended to have one genre or era represented, but my recs didn't always fit those parameters.

For example, I was more likely to be guided by optimism! than movies from the 70s!.

If on phone, it won’t come up iirc. On laptop it will, but your settings need to be set to default.

Ok, in between all the mess at work, I managed to narrow down what films I could recommend to everyone based on some of the lists and what I've seen. But now I need to narrow it down to each one of you. Give me a couple of hours to get out of this hellhole and I'll send the noms once I get home.

I'm happy with the majority of the ones I sent out to folks. A lot of them "feel right". I think the hardest was Allaby since I really have no idea about his(?) preferences.

🤷

I was kind of in the same boat. I really didn't want to double up and give the same nom to multiple people which means a couple of choices may not be the best for whom I chose it for. I've seen a lot of foreign films but apparently none of them are any good as they weren't on any lists. Everything I nominated I think is good but you know how it goes.

Finished third in the first PRHoF but don't think that top five is in the cards for the second. Just hoping for a top ten finish. The first one was easy as I just picked absolute stud classics (with one exception - sorry Siddon). The second one I took a few more chances, personal faves for the most part, which are going okay but nothing special. The best reviewed of my recs seems to be in a very crowded field and could end up as low as eighth. Ye Gods!

A Man Escaped- been looking to watch this for awhile now

Breathless- been holding off because I think it could be a favorite Goddard and I don't always like to unveil all the good ones right away.

Children of Paradise- if I remember right I am daunted by the runtime I thought it was pretty long. Oh well.

Diabolique- started before never got far. Hope to love.

Open Your Eyes- never heard of this

Rocco and his brothers- heard of but know literally nothing

Rosetta- never heard of

Seven Samurai- hopefully legendary

Shoot the Piano Player- hope to really like

Shoplifters- I'd be surprised if I didn't enjoy this

Whisper of the Heart- love Ghibli so it's got a nice shot to be loved.

Bicycle Thieves (1948)
I’m high on Italian Neorealism, and thought Shoeshine was a great film from De Sica. Same director, just a few years apart.
Harakiri (1962)
Was hoping for this one. I plan on watching this and then Miike’s remake for comparison.
High and Low (1963)
I was hoping for Kurosawa films. This is one of his Noir films that don’t usually get the same recognition of his Samurai films. Very happy.
The Last Emperor (1987)
Best Picture winner that has been on my watch list for ages.
L'Avventura (1960)
Another that’s been on my watch list for ages.
Persona (1966)
Ah, Bergman. We meet again. Surprisingly seen very little of his work. Should be a good place to start up
Rome, Open City (1945)
Another Italian Neorealist film that’s been on my watch list for ages.
Santa Sangre (1989)
Jodorowsky. I haven’t watched any of his films yet, because I’ve read they can be hard to get into. Wanted to watch this last year when it was available on Amazon, but it was removed before I could. Now I have no excuse.
Show Me Love (1998)
Only film I’m not familiar with.
Stalker (1979)
I figured I’d get this. It was inevitable that Tarkovsky would get nominated for me, as he is a huge blind spot, but this should be a good introduction to his films.
Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964)
Demy musical. Heard about this ages ago. Should be interesting as well.

Very good mix of countries, genre, decades. Am hype. 🙂

Some of these have been on my haven't got round to it yet list for a good ten years; others I know nothing about.

Looking forward to it.

I hope you all like my picks for you, it was harder being restricted to foreign films so in most cases they are films I love that I wanted everyone to watch, with some thought about which one was most suitable for each person of course. Good to see a lot of my second choices on the lists. (Or my first choice, in one case).

I've no idea which film 4 people tried to pick for me - maybe something everyone else saw in a hall of fame I didn't join. I'd guess the Marriage of Maria Braun as that seems the most obvious pick for me.

Rififi (1955)
Sansho the Bailiff (1954)
The Seventh Seal (1957)
Vivre Sa Ve (1962)
Woman in the Dunes (1964)

4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007)
-started it, didn't finish it happy to give this a second shot.

Come and See (1985)
-Another one I opened up so that people could nominate for me(I assume half the field took this one)

The Conformist (1970)
-We'll see generally I'm not a big Italian fan when it comes to film but I'll give this one a hard look.

La Ceremonie (1995)
-Very happy to see a crime film pop up really looking forward to this one.

The Given Word (1962)
-I wouldn't mind saving this for next year to cross off a South American film. It doesn't sound like me but we'll see

Jiro Dreams of Sushi (2011)
-Good pick to whomever got this one, I love documentaries pity it took three Halls before people started noming them for me.

Last Train Home (2009)
-It's like Christmas...don't know if I'll connect with the subject matter but happy to see it.

Port of Shadows (1938)
-I can't recall if I saw this or not...lot of films from this era blend together but It should be good

Rififi (1955)
-yeah I needed to give this a second viewing I watched this when I was way to young and I forgot what I didn't like about it.

Story of a Love Affair (1950)
-Italian films aren't really my thing not a big Antoinoni fan but it'll be good to cross this off the list

Wolf Children (2012)
-Jeez I can't seem to escape these animated films I really liked Mirai so I've got higher hopes than the previous halls.

Even if someone thinks one of my picks is "out of their comfort zone", I tried to choose films that I love/like or at least enjoy at some level. It was really challenging to balance films that I've seen/they haven't seen, and that are in a foreign language to top it all. In one case *ahem* I had to even go with a blind nom of a film I hadn't even heard about  but that's all on you for seeing so much stuff :D

A couple of surprises but Underground is not one of them. I was almost positive that would show up. Biggest surprise would have to be Blue is the Warmest Color. Started both Fitzcarraldo and Porco Rosso but didn't finish either one. Can't remember why I stopped, probably a non-emergency emergency, but it was very early into both of them.

Shoplifters and Fallen Angels are the only two I have never heard of.

I really wanted to nominate Santa Sangre for somebody but chickened out so...glad to see it pop up on Wyldesydes list.

True, it's probably only Talk to Her... I nearly nominated it but thought it would have been nominated already. But I'm happy with the one I picked for cricket, I wanted to pick it for someone.

After watching Late Spring last year and loving it, I bumped up Tokyo Story in my personal queue, so it's good to have it here also.

High and Low (1963)
I was hoping for Kurosawa films. This is one of his Noir films that don’t usually get the same recognition of his Samurai films. Very happy.

Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964)
Demy musical. Heard about this ages ago. Should be interesting as well.
You're in for a treat for the first two since they came in, respectively, Second and First in the Japanese Hall of Fame.
And Umbrellas took first place in the Foreign Language HoF which, for a musical, says a lot.

Firstly, broken record time: cricket truly did hit gold when you came up with this variation to the HoF. It's been an absolute plethora of gems and continues to. To keep myself for remarking over and over again, I am pretty excited and intrigued by ALL my nominations. Hopefully I'll be returning the favor with ones I chose for others.

The 400 Blows (1959) (France) Director: François Truffaut This will be my second Trauffaut film and one that has continually been on my peripheral every time I see the title.
Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (1974) (West Germany) Director: Rainer Werner Fassbinder I thought my chance to check this one out was lost when it was no longer in the 24th HoF. Only to be found again here - SWEET
A Man Escaped (1956) (France) Director: Robert Bresson Lovely bit of kismet here. This weekend was my discovery of Bresson films, picking up two of them from the library. This one and Pickpocket which I watched last night and was curious to see if it would show up here and if it did, I was going to steal that First Review Position with it. I am very happy to see A Man Escaped since, like Pickpocket, I was very much intrigued by it and Bresson's minimalist style and attention to technical detail.
Army of Shadows (1969) (France) Director: Jean-Pierre Melville I have become an ardent fan of Melville very recently. With already a keen interest after the first time seeing both Le Samouraï and Le Cercle Rouge a few years back, I have delved into his list of films in the past few months and this is one of several I have on my watchlist for the 2021 Film Challenge.
The Cranes are Flying (1957) (Soviet Union) Director: Mikhail Kalatozov I am nearly nonexistent when it comes to Russian films and, with a review from IMDb that is titled "Exquisite romantic tale of bittersweet war romance" it definitely looks like an excellent starting point. I do believe I'll leave my research to that and happily go into this blindly and enjoy.
Rashomon (1950) (Japan) Director: Akira Kurosawa One of two Kurosawa films on my plate which is a wonderful thing since he is a director I've held in great awe since I was a teenager and yet have seen a very small slice of his work.
Samurai Rebellion (1967) (Japan) Director: Masaki Kobayashi I absolutely loved Kobayashi's Hara-Kiri and this was something that had caught my eye at the time but never had the opportunity to explore.
Shoplifters (2018) (Japan) Director: Hirokazu Koreeda Heard a lot of great things recently regarding this so pretty happy to be one of the four folks who will be experiencing it.
The Tin Drum (1979) (West Germany) Director: Volker Schlöndorff If CosmicRunaway was in this I would have instantly thought it was her nomination. There is something deliciously off-kilter and almost fanciful about this film that truly appeals to me.
Wild Strawberries (1957) (Sweden) Director: Ingmar Bergman I have always been hesitant when it came to Bergman. Believing myself a little lacking in intellect to properly appreciate his work. But as I've experienced his work via these HoFs I do find myself finding an admiration, if not an all out enjoyment of his work.
Yojimbo (1961) (Japan) Director: Akira Kurosawa The film that inspired Sergio Leone to make A Fistful of Dollars, F@CK YES

The Human Beast: My third Renoir and I'm no closer to loving him. I love all the train footage. I could watch a couple hours of just that. Once the inciting incident takes place it mostly loses me. The characterizations feel weak. The scenes don't feel cohesive. The time line doesn't really make sense. Some of it might be trying to deal with very risqué and violent subject matter in 1938. I don't think all of it can be chalked up to that though. Not a bad movie, I see what people love about Renoir. I need more than glimpses to call a movie great though. This one was just fine

Taste of Cherry

I had wanted to see this when I first read about it in the 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die book at least ten years ago. But then I watched Ten and Close Up and really didn’t get along with either. Fortunately, Taste of Cherry is a lot more accessible than either of those, with the focal point to the narrative which is the story of a man driving around looking for someone to complete an unusual job for him.

At first you share in the awkwardness and suspicion of his first passenger, but as it becomes apparent what he wants and as he meets more people, there is a shift in mood and how you view him and his quest. The film makes no judgement (or even a firm conclusion). The final passenger is the most interesting as well as the most successful for the driver.

A lot of this is shots of the car driving along dusty roads (and even that may be a metaphor in itself) but it is nonetheless compelling. I liked this film and I’m glad I watched it.

Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, 1974

A widow named Emmi (Brigitte Mira) seeks shelter in a Moroccan bar one evening, where she meets Ali (El Hedi ben Salem), a Moroccan man about 25 years her junior. After a night of deep conversation and a surprising physical connection, the two become an item. But as the community around them--including Emmi's family and friends--react to the bi-racial, May-December romance, some ugly behaviors rear their heads.

I imagine that this HoF will mostly involve great movies just narrowly elbowing each other out of the way for the top slot. This was a great first film to watch for the challenge.

The strength of the film, in my opinion, is the depth and complexity of the two main characters and, by extension, their reaction to the bigotry that they begin to encounter. Their affection for each other, born from a mutual empathy, is believable. At the same time, the rift that begins to develop as time goes on is also believable. Emmi doesn't like the stress of suddenly being "the other", and Ali reflexively feels demeaned when he is pushed to be "less foreign."

The main strain that we see on Emmi's side is what happens between her and her friends and her family. The women she works with suddenly ignore her, even moving away during a lunch break like a group of petulant teenagers in a high school cafeteria. Her children shame and mock her for her choice. As an older woman who seems to be relatively socially isolated--outside of the women who live in her apartment building--she is particularly sensitive to being cut out of friendships.

On Ali's side of things, we see the many small ways in which not being a "real" German is constantly shoved in his face, both around town and at home. The local grocer deliberately "misunderstands" Ali's slightly-fractured-but-understandable German when he tries to order at the store. And at home, which should be a safe haven, he gets pressure from Emmi in what might seem like small ways. But even something as small as Emmi refusing to cook couscous feels like a rebuke, and you can understand why Ali feels stifled.

I liked that the film showed a range of responses to the couple. For example, Emmi's landlord at first takes Ali to be a subletter. When Emmi explains they are engaged, he is hardly fazed, and merely concludes that she knows what she's doing and it's none of his business. Later, when a neighbor tries to say cutting things about the couple, he smoothly shuts her down about it. Some other characters take the attitude of "Yeah, it's a bit weird, but so what?" On the other hand, no one really advocates for the couple or strongly takes their side. It feels like a very realistic depiction of bigotry--a few loudmouth creeps surrounded by a lot of "neutrals".

Both Ali and Emmi have a crisis of sorts in the final act of the film. I did feel as if Emmi's arc was a bit better realized. "Fear eats the soul" seems to best fit what she is going through--agonizing over how she is being treated and will continue to be treated. Ali's actions make sense, but we don't get the same depth of understanding about how he processes everything.

Really solid film with great performances and a message of tolerance/empathy that I appreciated.

4.5

The 400 Blows (Truffaut 1959)

I'm off to a great start as the very first film that I watched I really liked.

The 400 Blows is a very balanced film that never preaches or tries to make a case by focusing purely on a one sided issue. I mean in one way the troubled kid has problems which are a result of his dysfunctional family, especially his mother who never wanted him and shipped off to live with the relatives as soon as she could. Then again much of the problems the teen faces comes from his own dumb ass behavior. He does a lot of really stupid stunts and screws up constantly. He's not overly sympathetic, yet he's very real and believable.

Oh, I always thought the 400 Blows referred to some brutal beatings the kid had endured. That's not what the title means, I read that properly translated from French it means 400 pranks...referring to all the dumb stunts the kid ends up pulling.

So what does the film have to say? At the end we see the boy running free towards the ocean, of course he's not really free until he starts shaping up.

Port of Shadows (1938)

An early film noir...Port of Shadows is a mixed bag a three act story that lands the opening and closing but misses the middle. Port of Shadows is a story of men and women on the fringes of society. An AWOL soldier ends up in a dive bar where he hooks up with gangsters and a 17 year old who is being "taken care of" by her godfather.

The depressed guy smoking a cigarette cliche likely didn't start here but it's well used. We also have a dog that I suppose it supposed to be symbolic of our lead. The dog is well trained and poorly used which is my biggest knock of the film. Jean reluctantly taking in strays is a good idea for a film and story...but Port of Shadows just kinda glosses right over that to give us a third rate pulp gangster film.

Visually Carne demonstrates a deft ability to give us the audience a solid look at this world. Taking from German Expressionism Port of Shadows gives us the watcher a solid mood. We are also not stuck in single rooms as the film gives us the entire ghetto. That's a big plus in it's favor. I'm not sure where I'm going to rank this film when it's all said and done. The subject matter is strong but only implied you know 20-30 years later you would have gotten hit by a stronger film. I think in a lot of ways this is what the New Wave rebelled against.

Thank you for whomever nominated this one because it'll give me a lot to think about.

The Tin Drum (1979) (West Germany) Director: Volker Schlöndorff If @CosmicRunaway (http://www.movieforums.com/community/member.php?u=90868) was in this I would have instantly thought it was her nomination. There is something deliciously off-kilter and almost fanciful about this film that truly appeals to me.
There's actually two other films on your list that I would've chosen for you, since I would have tried to snag Ali: Fear Eats the Soul for everyone who seemed disappointed in its disqualification in the 24th, then Shoplifters and Parasite for everyone else (who hasn't seen them yet).

I'm sure someone here has seen all three, but I didn't think that far ahead haha.
