ok thanks to Aniko for this idea.

Well...there's always 80's lovers out there. And even if you absolutely HATE the 80's you'll come around (thats what happened to me). So this is just sort of to talk about the cool things that happened before I was born (and it's not like I even got to enjoy the 90's- i barely remember them). Not trying to answer any of lifes major questions (except maybe why my mothers bridesmaids dresses were HOT PINK) just relaxing and talking about anything from the 80's; music, movies, celebs, life, fashion (it's coming back I need tips so i can be the first) cool stuff like that. I don't claim to be an expert but I'd love to hear from some. Thanks! :)

Okay, speaking as a child of the 1980's, you did NOT miss anything. The horror of the eighties is unparalelled to this day. :D All the cartoons were really toy commercials, there were a lot of awful corporate bands that kept good music off the radio, everyone was greedy and materialistic, and John Hughes movies just sucked.

BUT...let's look for a few good things about the eighties:

The Dead Kennedys
Bad Religion
The Descendants
Metallica
Return of the Jedi
The Blues Brothers
Pee Wee's Playhouse
Repo Man
Stephen King
Bill the Cat
The Goonies
Indiana Jones
Dana Carvey on SNL

Umm, I am sure I will think of more, but I can't right now. Just let's say I was not a happy child of the eighties....I mean, hair-metal...shudder.....

Under the pop surface, the eighties were a tremendous time for music.

Top Bands-Sonic Youth, the Pixies, Joy Division, Tom Waits, the Swans, Talking Heads, early Nirvana(I wasn't a fan of their later stuff), Neil Young, the Smiths, The Stone Roses, and so on and so on.

As one 80's lover to another, one thing has chaanged. Cartoons on Saturday mornings. I used to get up early, just for the toons. Then one day......things changed. Yuck.

The 80's were great:

The Rubik's Cube
Mohawks
Corey Hart's "I Wear My Sunglasses at Night"
Atari
MTV Premieres (and had normal programming)
Indiana Jones
LP's were in use and CDs were intoduced.
Freddy Krueger was born :p

I was heavily influenced by the 80s, as I spent my first six years of life watching TV in the 80s, movies from the 80s, and collecting all the popular 80s kids toys and such. I also watched a lot of MTV.

The 90's were like MY decade, or at least the first half was. I disavow any knowledge of the spice girls... :D

But in the 90's, we had great movies (Tim Burton, Kevin Smith, Quentin Tarantino) and music (Nirvana, Sublime, Green Day) and Comics (Hate, Ghost World) and you could wear your dirty laundry to school and that was considered a fashion! Oh, how wonderful the 90's were... :)

The 80's. All I can say is what a party it was. Between 1980 and 1989 I:

Was deflowered
Went to high school
Went to college
Lived without comfort or shelter
Lived in great comfort
Drank too much
Smoked too much
Had altercations with the local sheriff
In a drunken stupor a friend of mine and I disassembled his 1969 Mustang and reassembled it in his parents living room. His parents were overseas and he wanted a 'show' car.
Wrecked my bike
Wrecked my car
Almost wrecked my life
Got married

I was born in '86, so I don't remember too much of the eighties. I remember watching cartoons when I was really young, such as "Hello, Kitty" and "Strawberry Shortcake." I remember the early nineties a lot more clearly than any eighties, like New Kids on the Block! Hahaha, they were like my favorite band when I was 5. Them and Micheal Jackson! I was obsessed.

How old are you by the way?

Well I have 80's day tomorrow at school, and I can't remember for the life of me what I wore last year, and I am totally at a loss. So if y'all could recommend some 80's looks that would be splendid, I think I might stop at the thrift store tonight and I need to know what to look for.

So if y'all could recommend some 80's looks that would be splendid, I think I might stop at the thrift store tonight and I need to know what to look for. Here's stuff you can do with your own closet:
Peg your jeans
put bleach designs on them too
big, ugly, plastic earrings
lace
scrunchies
old sweat shirt with the neck cut off and slouched off one shoulder
two or more pairs of socks
a t-shirt with the corner of the hem tied in a knot
crimp your hair or rat it with a comb

I'll dig out my 8 pleat Bowie pants (as bought through the NME small ads).

Pity I can't dig out my hair though - too much hairspray c1988 while trying to fashion a quiff. :(
